From the Desk of Monsignor Carruthers
Jesus said to Peter, “Put out into the deep water and lower your nets for a catch”
(Luke 5:4). We have many spiritual tools available to assist in responding to the
invitation to the deep. Among those tools is spiritual reading, an important spiritual
practice for any Catholic that chooses to take seriously the call to holiness. It is, though,
one of the most forgotten of spiritual practices. DynamicCatholic estimates that
only 1% of Catholics in the United States read a Catholic book last year.
Spiritual reading is the reading of spiritual and theological works that help us to deepen
in our understanding and experience of the Catholic faith and grow toward holiness.
More than simple study, the reading is done in a prayerful way that assists us in
encountering the grace of God working through the vehicle of the spiritual text.
St. Alphonsus Ligouri said “the exclusive purpose of the reading is to advance in divine
love, and not to acquire learning and indulge in curiosity.” The practice goes back to the
earliest days of the Church – St. Paul exhorted St. Timothy to “attend to reading.”
St.Alphonsus interpreted this as Paul wanting Timothy "to apply [himself] to the
reading of holy books, not in a passing way and for a short time, but regularly and for a
considerable time."
It is in that spirit that we are reading together Matthew Kelly’s “Rediscover Catholicism.” Matthew Kelly challenges Catholics to
spiritually discipline themselves and get back to basics, to keep in mind the call to holiness. He invites today’s Catholics to realize
the great shoulders upon which they stand, being inspired by the achievements of our Church and learning about our Church’s
heroes, the saints, so that we may pick up the torch may be passed to us and that we may run with it with vigor and love.
Throughout the fist section of his book, Mathew Kelly rightly says that our contemporary culture is one that bases things on
appearance and does not support us in seeking more than the superficial, does not help us to look deeper. Some of the prevailing
philosophies that underlie our cultural experience included individualism, hedonism and minimalism, all of which can creep into our
own way of being in the world without our knowing, causing grave consequences for our lives. To be stuck in such “isms” is to be
less than we truly are – and because of that our lives and those around us who could receive from us if we were truly alive, are made
less full and deep. It is important for us to realize that, in the midst of all this, Jesus presents Himself as the source of life in
abundance. Catholics must learn to live in the world rooted in our baptismal identity, the “best-version-of-themselves, celebrating
with joy the beauty the Church opens up for us.
On another note, my experience of the sabbatical continues to unfold in beautiful ways. I continue to enjoy my time in the parish,
and the work at the wellness center is making progress. I am not as sore this week as last week. It is also wonderful to have more
time for reflection and deeper consideration to spend time “being” rather than “doing.” As one of the greatest theologians and
spiritual writers of the twentieth century, Josef Pieper says in “Leisure as the Basis of Culture, one of his landmark works: “Leisure
is only possible when we are at one with ourselves. We tend to overwork as a means of self-escape, as a way of trying to justify our
existence.”
