Sunnhordland – from the ocean to the glacier
STORDFJELLE T, VIE W OVER FOLGEFONNA GL ACIER,
K VINNHER AD MOUNTAINS, HAL SNØY AND HUGLO
Sunnhordland
– where the majestic glacier
and the fjord meet the sea
In Sunnhordland, the wild sea meets majestic mountainsides and waterfalls, icy glaciers
and exposed skerries. There are lots of nature and cultural experiences and activities on
offer in these spectacular surroundings.
Wonderful experiences await you in the Sunnhordland region!
5
The fjord and the islands
As you move further inland, a fascinating island and fjord kingdom opens up
before your eyes. There are thousands
of large and small islands in the region
– all of them marked by the friendly and
hospitable character of the people of
Sunnhordland. Norway’s second longest
fjord – the Hardangerfjord – starts in
Sunnhordland. This 179-km-long fjord,
often called the ”Queen of the Norwegian
fjords”, also contributes to the distinctive
character of the region.
Mountains and glacier
Furthest inland in the region, the mighty
Sunnhordland mountains tower heavenwards, with some peaks as tall as 1700
metres. The mountains surround Norway’s third largest glacier – Folgefonna.
This magnificent glacier is “spread”
over the mountains of the Folgefonna
peninsula like the icing on a cake. Some
of Norway’s most spectacular waterfalls
cascade down the mountainsides. Folgefonna National Park, the 25th national
park in Norway, was opened here in
summer 2005.
History
Like its distinctive and varied scenery,
Sunnhordland also has a varied history
for visitors to explore. Sunnhordland was
one of the first areas to be settled in Norway, and up through the ages the area
has had a special place in the country’s
history. That is why Sunnhordland is one
of the areas with most ancient monuments and the richest cultural heritage,
dating back thousands of years.
Fishermen, hunters
and boat builders
Fishing and hunting have always been
important when people have settled in an
area. This is also true of Sunnhordland,
whose inhabitants have shown great
prowess in exploiting the area’s natural
resources. Fish from the sea and the
fjords and game from bountiful hunting
grounds have always been important
to people in this part of Hordaland. The
people of Sunnhordland have always
been a travelling people, and boatbuilding became an important activity early in
the area’s history. It is still an important
industry, although nowadays they build
modern ships and the world’s biggest oil
installations.
Religion
The people of Sunnhordland have always
been god-fearing – both in old Norse
times and in more recent times. It was no
accident, therefore, that Olav Tryggvason
choose to go ashore in Moster in 995
AD in order to take over the throne and
start the Christianisation of Norway. In
1024, Olav Haraldson arrived in Moster
accompanied by Bishop Grimkjell, and
oversaw the adoption of Christian law by
the Mostratinget assembly.
Moster is still home to one of the
oldest churches in Norway – Moster Old
Church. Erling Skakke built Halsnøy
Monastery on the island of Halsnøy, one
of the mightiest Augustinian monasteries
in Norway’s history.
The Viking era and the nobility
Given its central location, it was almost
inevitable that Sunnhordland would come
to occupy a prominent place during the
Viking era. The region became a central
base for Viking chieftains who often went
raiding in the west. There are many places, therefore, where relics of this era can
be seen. The aristocracy subsequently
made their presence felt and the building
of the Barony Rosendal was completed in
1665 – the only one of its kind in Norway.
Popular culture
However, the most important element
in any region is the people themselves.
The great activity that has characterised Sunnhordland has of course
created the basis for a lively folk culture,
which has fortunately been nurtured
and maintained throughout the region
Sunnhordland.
Sunnhordland – from the ocean to the glacier
The ocean
In the outermost part of the region, the
landscape is dominated by the ocean
and the coastline. Imagine watching the
ocean waves pounding against the rocks
at Bømlo or in Austevoll. Or perhaps you
find it more tempting to watch the sun
go down over the sea from Ryvarden
lighthouse? No matter the weather, a
trip to these barren but vibrant areas of
our region will prove an unforgettable
experience.

Folgefonna
– Norway’s southernmost glacier
The area on and around Folgefonna, the third largest mainland glacier, became a national
park in 2005. The Folgefonna peninsula offers glacier and wilderness, geological diversity,
rich plant and animal life, cultural treasures and a beautiful landscape. The area offers a
diverse range of experiences and accommodation. www.folgefonna.info
7
This IS Folgefonna:
For example, you can walk the ‘tourist
route’ across the Folgefonna glacier
from Sundal to Fonnabu and take part in
a guided glacier walk across the glacier,
visit Fonna Glacier Ski Resort (summer
ski centre) in Jondal, walk through the
Buerdalen or Bondhusdalen valleys, walk
on the restored Buførevegen road that
goes from Reisæter across the mountain
just north of Nordfonna and down to
Botsvatn lake above Øvre Krossdalen
in Jondal. In the Åkrafjord, you can join
walks along the fjord or see the geology
exhibition at Rullestad. In Rosendal, a visit
to the Stone Park is recommended.
The ice on the Folgefonna
peninsula covers an area of
approx. 270 km2. The area is
divided between five municipalities
in Sunnhordland and Hardanger:
Kvinnherad, Jondal, Ullensvang,
Odda and Etne.
The new Folgefonna Centre in Rosendal
opens in spring 2017. There, visitors will
be able to learn about the Folgefonna
glacier and the nature in the area from the
very bottom of the Hardangerfjord to the
national park, and about the climate and
its impact on our lives.
Three plateau glaciers: Northern,
Central and Southern Folgefonna.
Southern Folgefonna is the third
largest glacier in Norway.
The highest point is 1,660 metres
above sea level.

from the ocean
to the glacier
Tips:
This is a fantastic tour where you get to see idyllic
archipelagos and the many thousands islands along the
coast. Drive along the famous Hardanger fjord and spot the
majestic mountains and waterfalls along the way. If this does
not take your breath away, perhaps Folgefonna, Norway’s
third largest glacier up close will do the trick?
The trip goes first to Etne and Åkra fjord,
with steep mountains and the majestic
Langfoss waterfall. From Åkra fjord,
the trip continues past the famous
twin waterfalls Låtefoss. Next the trip
continues from mountain and fjord out
to the sea. Experience the fascinating
island landscape in Sveio, Stord, Bømlo
and Fitjar. In Bømlo there are two airy
suspension bridges which provide you
with a wonderful view over fjords and
mountains. Bømlo is an important island
in Norwegian history. Along the coast you
can experience much coastal history and
perhaps spend the night in a fisherman’s
hut. Enjoy the lovely sea food whilst you
listen to the waves and seagull cries.
Experience tranquillity in peaceful nature
whilst you drive over the island Tysnes,
which lies where the Hardanger fjord
meets the sea. Further you can travel to
the town Rosendal which lies along the
Hardanger fjord. The fjord is by some
called “Queen of the Norwegian fjords”.
Rosendal is surrounded by beautiful and
high mountains. The trip continues to
Folgefonna, Norway’s third largest glacier. A magnificent waterfall is Furuberg
waterfall, which lies along the Mauranger fjord and is a spectacular sight. Travel
back to Hardanger and experience more
wild and beautiful nature.

historic and
culinary experiences
This round trip takes you on a journey through the history
of Sunnhordland. Two world champion chefs run a
restaurant in the area. You can enjoy local produce such as
seafood, wild sheep, berries and lots more!
The tiny coastal communities are placed
one after another, as pearls on a string
between Bergen and Stavanger. It’s been
said that people in Norway first settled
in Sunnhordland’s region. This was
because the Christianisation of Norway
started right here, more precisely at
Moster in Bømlo. Before that time, the
Vikings ruled the west coast villages,
and there is plenty of evidence of that.
There have been many battles along the
coast, and you can hear and see more
about that especially in Fitjar, Bømlo
and in Etne. The food experiences at this
stretch are amazing and entirely special.
If you desire fresh sea food or local raw
ingredients combined with the greatest
dishes found in this historic scenery, you
will find it here. Many of the restaurants
focuses mainly on local produce and
specialities, and you can really taste the
region’s character. Further along the trip
it is worth visiting the village Rosendal.
Amongst majestic mountains and fjords
there are many wonderful historic places to see, especially worth mentioning
is Norway’s only barony. Travel further
south to the Viking farm on Avaldsnes
(Karmøy) and experience more Viking
history. Plenty of more culinary experiences can be found in the culinary city
Stavanger.

challenging hiking trips
Melderskin,”Queen amongst the
Sunnhordland mountains” 1426
m.a.s.l. You spend 4 hours going up and a
little less coming down. From the top you
can see all of Sunnhordland, fjords,
mountains, the sea and the powerful
Folgefonna. The starting point is in
Rosendal, which makes it easy to find
accommodation.
Fonnabu, «The Tourist route over
Folgefonna» 1450 m.a.s.l. The trip
takes about 10 hours to and fro. This is
the most used climb to Folgefonna, with
unusual great experience value “from
fjord to glacier”. The starting point is in
Sundal and goes through beautiful
Bondhusdalen valley before embarking
on the climb towards the glacier center;
Fonnabu, which is self-serviced with 27
beds. To walk at the glacier itself you
need an experienced glacier guide and
equipment. During the summer there
are arranged glacier trips every day
between Fonnabu and Holmskjer cabin
at Oddasida.
www.folgefonni-breforarlag.no
Tysnessåta 753 m.a.s.l. The walk
takes about 1,5 to 3 hours,
depending on where you start. From the
top there is an amazing view to Folgefonna
and Kvinnherad mountains, all of
Sunnhordland and the sea in the west.
To the top of Langfoss 881 moh.
Langfoss waterfall was in 2011
voted as one of the worlds most beautiful
waterfalls by CNN, with its 612-metre
cascading fall, and as the fifth highest
waterfall in Norway. This is a four hour
hike. The path to the top of Langfoss
starts next to the Langfoss parkingplace/
kiosk. The path follows the original route
from the Eljervik Farm to Langfoss
summer pasture farm on the plateau
above the waterfall. The highlight of the
trip is the viewpoint at Varahaugen. At
640 metres above sea level you get a panoramic view of the fjord. The trip can also
be guided. www.aakrafjorden.no
Siggjo 474 m.a.s.l. Siggjo has at all
times been an important approach
mark which can be seen from far out in
the sea. There’s a good trail from the
parking lot at Stokka by the highway 542
up to the top. One estimates 1,5 to 2
hours up and down. You get a view over
the Triangle Connection, the island
kingdom and the open sea in the west.

BICYCLING IN SUNNHORDL AND
- NORSKE BYGDEOPPLE VEL SER
Cycling across
the fjord and island landscapes
Experiences are more vivid and intense on a bicycle, powerful waterfalls,
flocks of sheep along the roadside, the salty smell of the sea. Sunnhordland
is a region of contrast and variety, also when it comes to cycling experiences.
Experience coast and islands one day - fjords and mountains the next day.
Here it’s the nature that leaves you breathless!
19
Leirvik is an excellent departure point
for your bicycle trip whether you wish
to experience islands, archipelagos,
mountains or fjords. The bicycle trip to
the Barony in Rosendal is a varied and
easy ride. From Rosendal, you can cycle
over the mountain to the Sunnhordland
paradise of Skånevik (and further on to
Etne) or across Tysnes island to Bergen
or Leirvik. All the roads in Tysnes are
narrow, but the traffic is mostly light. It is
possible to cycle around or across Tysnes
and it is easy to continue on to Bergen
from the island.
The island municipalities of Bømlo,
Stord, Fitjar and Austevoll offer many
roads and landscapes of varied and small
scale typography. There are many quaint
communities which are well worth a
visit: Mosterhamn, Espevær, Langevåg,
Brandasund and Hiskjo to name but a
few. Starting from Bømlo, its nice to
ride along the Triangle Link, the road
system linking the islands of Stord, Fitjar
and Austevoll. The islands of Austevoll
are connected by many bridges. From
Austevoll, it’s easy to continue on to
Bergen or to return to Leirvik.
There are many things to experience and
many places to stay during the bicycle
trip. Several hotels and guesthouses are
“Cycle welcome» accomodation” and
have facilities especially suited for
tourists on bikes. During the tourist
season, it is recommended that you make
reservations in advance.
We wish you a nice bicycle trip!

Boating and fishing
Sunnhordland is a paradise for boating and fishing enthusiasts. Since time immemorial
people have flocked to the area to try their luck at fishing in the sea, rivers and lakes.
You can sail on the open sea, navigate through skerries or narrow fjords. If you are
lucky, you might even find your own private island!
23
Furthest out towards the ocean,
Sunnhordland has a unique coastal
landscape. You can sail among islands
and islets with the open sea as your
nearest neighbour. In the inner part of
Sunnhordland you will experience large
contrasts compared to the coast. Steep
mountains, fjords, glaciers and majestic
waterfalls summarize the nature here.
If you arrive with or without boat you have
the possibility to experience the coastal
and fjord paradise in Sunnhordland.
There are many options as to renting
a boat, or joining a sightseeing tour by
boat, whether you wish for calm boat
trips in old veteran boats or speed and
excitement in a RIB boat.
On these pages you get more information
about where to rent a boat and
sighsteeing tours.
Sightseeing trips with boat:
Fishing in Sunnhordland
Sunnhordland is paradise for anyone
looking to harvest of Nature’s bounty.
The open sea which awaits you out at the
coast really abounds in fish. There are
several places where you can take a trip
with local experts to catch really big fish.
It is also possible to fish from the shore,
of course.
Further up the fjord, there are also many
good fishing spots where you can fish
from the shore or from a boat. There are
hundreds of lakes in Sunnhordland, both
in lowland areas and up in the mountains.
Many of them abound in fish, and there is
a really unique atmosphere associated
with fishing in these lakes.

Boating in Sunnhordland
Sunnhordland has a long tradition of
boat tourism, and has got a wide range
of harbours. There is huge variety – here
you will find everything from guest
marinas offering first class services
to the most beautiful natural harbours
nature has to offer. Did you know that
several of Norway’s best boat harbours
is located in Sunnhordland?
24
Boating and fishing
The quality of the fish is very high
– imagine enjoying a tasty meal of fish
way up in the mountains while watching
the sun setting over the ocean.
Deepsea fishing
With a few exceptions, you can fish with
a rod and handline in the sea all year
in Norway. This also applies to salmon
fishing. You cannot fish within 100 to
200 metres of the mouths of salmon
rivers. Foreign visitors are allowed to
fish with hand-held equipment, but they
are not allowed to sell fish. There are
also restrictions on how much fish it is
permitted to take out of Norway.
Fishing in freshwater
Landowners hold the fishing rights for
freshwater lakes etc. and can stipulate
fishing rules for freshwater fishing.
Fishing permits can be purchased where
landowners permit recreational fishing.
Children under the age of 16 are entitled
to free fishing permits in watercourses
in which there are no salmon, sea trout
or Arctic char. A fishing licence fee does
NOT have to be paid to the state for
freshwater fishing in such watercourses
– this also applies to adult fishermen.
For fishing in salmon watercourses,
everyone over the age of 16 must have
paid a fishing licence fee to the state
before they can buy a local fishing permit.
Friluftsrådet Vest has published
a brochure called Fritidsfiske i
Nord-Rogaland og Sunnhordland
(recreational fishing in north Rogaland
and Sunnhordland - in Norwegian only).
It provides information about where
you can fish and where you can buy
a fishing permit for the various lakes
and watercourses. You can pick up a
brochure at all tourist information offices
and it can be downloaded at
www.frivest.no

A PADDLING ADVENTURE
Interested in an paddling adventure?
Sunnhordland is an area which is full
of experiences for those who wishes to
benefit from the use of canoe or kayak.
Here we can offer everything from salty
adventures in a sea kayak, to the more
peaceful trips on the fjord or amongst
the islands in the archipelago. The most
powerful experiences you will find out at
sea. If you have a sea kayak then exciting
challenges awaits you in the area around
Bømlo, Austevoll, west of Fitjar and in
Sveio. If you seek a more tranquil existence, we will advise you to use the Fitjar
islands, and the idyllic Tysnes.
The glacier can be experienced close up
in a kayak. Experiencing a glacier at such
close range will take your breath away!
You will see many birds, perhaps a seal
and mink. Eagles are flying over you and
the cormorant ducks under. If you paddle
during the night, Phosphorescence that
light up both paddle and boat can be
discovered. There might be big fish or
groups of smaller fishes that swim by.
Serenity is something you will appreciate
whilst you glide along the water, and you
will have a relaxing way to enjoy your
own thoughts in between other great
adventures.
Is it fjord experiences you seek, then perhaps we can tempt you with the Åkrafjord
and Hardangerfjord. What would it be like
to glide calmly through the water all the
way to the shore, surrounded with majestic waterfalls and mountains? Norway’s
third biggest glacier, Folgefonna, is in
Kvinnherad.
You can receive tips for great paddle
areas from the places where you rent,

Paradise for boating enthusiasts
Fitjar is often called the island paradise
in Sunnhordland. Possibly the most
beautiful access to Fitjar is via the sea
route. Hundreds of boating tourists have
found their paradise here, among islands
and islets – there are as many of these as
there are days in the year.
Hiking tracks
Fitjar’s mountain wilds are easily accessible. Hiking maps can be purchased at
the Tourist Information Office. The gravel
path to Svartavatnet lake is a good hike.
The walk begins at the parking space
by the water power station, and leads
to Svartavatnet. The walk is about four
kilometres long. The path is adapted to
the needs of wheel chair users, and has
a number of good picnic spots with a view
over the Fitjar village. Also try the walk
in Rossneset. Park by the club house
near the sports grounds. The path starts
behind the club house. For more info,
go to www.visitsunnhordland.no
The culture trail
The walk takes you past the
Håkonar park, the Kongsbrønn (the
King’s Well), Rimsvarden and cultural monuments in the centre of Fitjar.
The walk is mostly on tarred road, and
some tracks, and takes about one hour.

Moster Old Church 63
According to the Icelandic recorder of
sagas, Snorre, Olav Tryggvason docked
at Moster in 995 following his voyage
across the North Sea from England,
in order to become king of Norway.
Here he celebrated mass and founded
a Church. In 1024, Olav Haraldson and
Bishop Grimkjell oversaw the adoption
of Christian law at the Mostratinget
assembly. Moster Church is thought to
be the Norwegian village Church with the
longest antiquarian history. Included in

Totlandskogen is the last area of
untouched forest and outlying land in
Moster. The area is situated in idyllic
surroundings along the Bømlafjord in the
east and south, the Børøyfjord in the west
and the farm Totland in the north. The
trail is made up of four sub-trails, which
follow the land along the Bømlafjord and
the Børøyfjord to two coves. The trail
takes you through a changing landscape
from open mountain terrain of heather
and juniper bushes to small marshes
and into sheltered, dense woodland on
well-trodden paths.
Walk to mount Brandasundsåto
The path starts in the good, sheltered
harbour in Brandasund. The first part
of the walk is on a car road up to a gate.
Here, the walk continues up a path to
a fantastic view of the ocean. The last
part is quite steep. Parking and picnic
area at the gate. The walk takes about 20
minutes. The path is well-marked.
