G E T “Very Jerry”: Tribute to Jerry Garcia - Thursday, August 11! Ashkenaz is excited to host a celebration of the life and music of Jerry Garcia! An allstar cast of local musicians will perform their favorite Garcia tunes. After a mostly acoustic first set of solos and duos, the second half will be a full-on, dancer-friendly electric set with a highly collaborative feel, much in the spirit of Jerry himself. The August date was chosen in honor of both the birth and the passing of Garcia (8/1/42-8/9/95). Though he never played at Ashkenaz, we have a long history with Garcia’s music. Since the ’90s Ashkenaz has hosted Grateful Dead Nights and featured bands that pay homage to the music of Garcia, the Grateful Dead, and scores of acts who have followed in their footsteps. The event is also a benefit for Ashkenaz. Like many music venues and nonprofits, we’ve been exploring new ways to keep our doors open. Local musicians have also been looking for ways to give back to Ashkenaz, and so sprung the idea of Community Benefit Nights. This show follows a hugely successful and musically exceptional 70th birthday tribute to Bob Dylan in May. Watch for more Community Benefit Nights throughout the year! H E R E !
