mechanic noted some rattling from the suspension
which he attempted to fix. It’s probably from your
lowering springs. It’s not bad.” I shrugged thinking, “ok, I
can live with a clank or two.”
I got into my car and pulled away from the dealership
lot. My car sounded like the front end was about to
fall off.
Foreword
THE VALUE OF AN EDUCATION
Like most car owners, I began my ownership
experience letting the dealer take care of my
maintenance and repair needs. However as time went
on and shop labor rates increased, I found myself
online more and more and doing some of the work
myself. The immediate benefits were not only costsavings but also a certain level of empowerment.
But there’s also the flip side, you can also recognize
when the work is not being done correctly.
Such a situation happened to me recently. A trusted
local shop was installing new tires, wheels, and
lowering spring set on a car of mine. During the course
of their work, their mechanic discovered that one of
my front struts was leaking fluid. The car was barely
two years old so the strut still qualified to be replaced
under warranty. I pre-ordered the strut from the
dealer and made an appointment for the repair for the
following week.
Upon my appointment day, I showed up at the dealer.
I spoke with the service advisor, explained my issues,
and filled out the estimate. Since the strut replacement
is about a 3-4 hour job, I opted to just stay on site and
work from the dealership waiting area. Four hours
later my repair was done, the car was newly aligned,
and I even got a car wash. As I got back into my car,
the Service Advisor said, “sorry it took so long, but the

At this point I was pretty disappointed in the
dealership mechanic as well as the service advisor and
I had no wish to return to the dealership.
Why so? Because I didn’t want the same mechanic
working on my car again; warranty coverage or not;
free labor or not. And I wasn’t going to spend my time
arguing about the Magnuson Moss act and a lowering
springs’ impact on a new strut.
So I returned home, finished up some work and got
changed into my car clothes. I jumped online and did
a ton of reading. I spent two hours on the car, pushing
and pulling everything that moved, pivoted, rotated,
bounced. And the end result? A loose upper strut nut
was the culprit. I was able to give it a few turns with a
socket wrench and a test drive verified that was the fix.
While I realize not everyone is mechanically inclined,
there’s a certain empowerment to being able to fix
your own issues or at the very least make a cursory
diagnosis of the issue.
The GGC offers a number of technical clinics at trusted
club member shops. These aren’t boring academic
classes either. The shop owner usually puts a member
car right on a lift and goes over common issues, things
to watch out for, and gives a short talk about how
things work.
It’s a great way to meet new people in the club
and avoid being that guy whose car is rattling down
the road.

affected their race, but they fought through and saw
the finish!
Despite having only 2 cars newer
than 2004, BMWs account for 7 out
of a possible 15 trophy places.
The 25 Hours of Thunderhill once again lived up to its
billing. As the longest endurance race held in the US,
scheduled during the early part of December, a few
hours outside of the San Francisco Bay Area, extremes
are the norm at this race. There was some question as
to what type of race was to be held. Drought-ridden
California was in the middle of one of its most prolific
months of rainfall in memory and indeed, it rained in
Willows 6 of 7 days prior to the race. This was further
emphasized during qualifying, which was held in
extremely wet conditions. A slow, dangerous race
looked to be on the cards.
When race day dawned it was overcast and coming
into the track there was the typical low slung tule fog
between I-5 and the racetrack. The teams were ready
for anything, holding out hope that the forecasters
prediction of a break in the weather during the race
would hold true. As predicted, the clouds parted and it
was a sunny track that greeted the teams as they lined
up on the grid, unbelievably, there would be no rain
until a few hours after the race finished. Because of all
the weather, the teams were getting another break, it

was unseasonably warm. With this race run through
the night, the teams are used to regularly dealing with
sub-freezing temperatures. In 2014 however, there
would be no rain, fog, or sub-freezing temperatures to
deal with.
I was lucky enough to be hanging out in the Stammer
Racing/Bavarian Performance team’s pit with their 2002
E46 M3 running again for a 4th consecutive year. They
had put in a clean qualifying lap in the wet and were
now safely in the top part of the grid starting 12th.
The discussion throughout the paddock that morning
was the price that teams were going to pay for going
off track. The track itself was very green from all the
rain, but the real penalty was the deep sticky mud that
was lying just off circuit. It would take its fair share of
victims before the end of the race. At 11am in sunny
conditions, the cars took their pace laps and started
the race. “As the green flew I was cautious because
the track felt green and slippery. It took me till the 6th
or 7th lap to find my full speed.” Said Jeff Stammer,
race team owner and driver who took the first stint.
“Slowing for the yellow flags and seeing multiple
cars off track and in the mud throughout my stint,
reminded me that in order for us to have a successful
25 hour, all of us would have to keep all 4 tires on the
track. This would become our mantra for the entire
race!”

7 Sun starting to set. 5pm on Saturday night, the Yost Autosport E92 M3 running fast. It
was one of the newest BMW’s in the race, a 2008. They finished mid-pack in the ultracompetitive ES class.
In other classes, there would be many duels for
position with complete unknowns racing next to
famous racers like Kurt Busch and Al Unser Jr. In the E0
class, the Hankook Tires/El Diablo Motorsports 1997
M3 took first place, 5 laps ahead of the CA Sport 1 2004
M3. In the E1 class, BMW’s swept the podium with
an ’07 328i leading and two 330i’s (’02 &’03) finishing
less than 12 laps behind. Did I mention that BMW’s
dominated the day with the most podium places?
As for the overall race lead, the prototypes took off and
began building a fast lead as is customary at this race.
Known for their speed but not reliability during this
long race, it was actually something of a surprise that
the Davidson Racing Norma, staffed by a star studded
driving team including by ex-Indy Car driver Alex
Lloyd, kept the car together and completed 682 laps
to finish in the lead. They were followed by the Award
Motorsport/Ehret Family Winery Porsche GT3 Cup car.
Oh yeah, what about that Stammer Racing Team? Well
after Jeff got out of the car, Matt Crandall, Derek Welch
and Eddie Nakato all kept that mantra about running
a clean race in the forefront of their minds. They ran
an absolutely superb race and when Eddie brought it
across the line, the car was nearly as clean as when it

started 25 hours earlier. A smart run, no unfortunate
accidents and no trips behind the wall, meant that
they had a very “boring” race for their support team led
by Nate Walton and Chris Watson. That translated into a
remarkable 645 laps completed for 2nd place in the ES
class and 3rdoverall. Once again the Ultimate Driving
Machines proved their mettle throughout some of the
toughest circumstances. Ciao!

I first became a member of BMW CCA in June of
2013. I searched for a 1M high and low but because
of the limited production the next best option was
my 135is. I wanted to meet other enthusiasts that
were just as passionate as myself about cars. My first
Cars and Coffee was with my friend Michael Quezada
in San Jose. I was blown away with the turn out and
quickly became interested in becoming a BMW CCA
member. We follow the calendar and attend all the
meets. I spent a lot of time with this amazing group
of people and they were so eager to share a wealth
of information and I began to build my 135is with
1M parts. My friend Marco who was the first 1 series
to do the whole conversion at Performance Technic
confirmed that all the parts fit and would improve
the capability of the car if I wanted to take my car to
a track. Towards the end of my build, I realized that I
wanted to change platforms and needed to part out
my car. Because of BMW CCA, I was able to expand my
network of friends, which led to an easy part out. My
friends and I mutually benefited by a quick sale and
good deals on parts they were interested in since I put
them on the car.

NEXT TO MY BMW, MY OTHER PASSION
In December, I purchased a new M4 special ordered
with all the goodies that I was missing from the
previous platform. During the wait period for the car to
be built, I became obsessed with photography inspired
by Gregg Drake who shot several magazine quality
photos of my 135is. Matt Dion was another friend
who capture a gorgeous shot while at Cars and Coffee
Danville. After a few car meets, I met Chris Reardon at
Concord euro meet. Chris comes from a family with a
background of photography, which inspired he and I
to improve our skills. BMW CCA meets were the perfect
place to practice with all the beautiful cars that attend.
I ran into Courtney Cutchen at a cars and coffee and
she became another mentor for photography. She
taught me lighting, positioning, and camera settings
that really helped me produce better shots.

track, I would go on canyon runs with several members
to get the feel of the car. We would go karting to
learn the race lines. I road with good friend Thiago at
Laguna to see what its like to be on track which I’m
forever grateful for. I did autocross and then a full track
day at Thunderhill in January and February. BMW CCA
provides all kinds of opportunities for people to meet
friends, get coaching, referrals for top shops to help
maintenance their cars and up grade parts.
I hope my story up will inspire other
members and new members to become
more active in the club and to take
advantage of the relationships available.
PEER PRESSURE, IN A GOOD WAY
BMW CCA inspired me to try autocross and tracking my
M4. I asked several members about modifications that
would be most effective improving the handling of my
car which was helpful to purchase the right stuff once
and not waste time and money replacing parts that

My favorite BMW of all time? The one with me in it cruising down the
PCH listening to the engine and exhaust while sweeping around the
turns. Honestly, any BMW that makes me want to get back in it at the
end of the day is good with me!
As a boy, performance vehicles both on the road and
on a track always intrigued me. This led me to my first
BMW, a manual convertible E36 318i. This Canadian, all
metric beast was my neighbors vehicle that was being
sold because they were having children. I detailed
it every week and kept it in my parent’s garage at all
times. Ironically enough I ended up selling it back to
the same family for the same dollar amount because
they wanted a vehicle for their retirement. I went
without a car for several years in college and upon
graduation and my first job I decided that I wanted a
classy, yet powerful car and BMW fit that bill.
The thing that led me to the BMW CCA was that I
needed to keep myself busy so I began with Autocross.
In the club I met numerous people that were so
passionate about their cars and found that many knew
more about mine than I did. Ultimately, seeing this
passion lead me to my decision this year to become
a lifetime member when I renew in September. As
a new board member I hope that my involvement
and dedication inspires others to take that next leap
into more of what the club can offer in terms of
volunteerism and future leadership roles. Overall I
see the club as a whole being very successful as long
as it integrates new trends in the marketplace to its
offerings and opens itself to new types of drivers.

BMW CCA National Conference
From March 13-15 this year, the
National office of BMW CCA invited
chapter leaders from all over the
country to meet as a group in Dallas,
Texas for a weekend conference.
This is a once-per-year chance to meet other chapter
leaders, share ideas, challenges, and learn about
many aspects of our club. We heard from national
Treasurer Louis Goldsman on the financial health of our
organization (we broke even in 2014). We welcomed
the incoming, newly elected board members, South
Central RVP Dwayne Moseley, North Central RVP
Tim Beechuck and President Steve Johnson. We
heard latest updates from the BMW CCA Foundation
and learned more about their mission as a charity
organization. Bill Wade who works for the Foundation
and runs the Street Survival teen driver program

updated us on 2014 success around the country and
discussed plans for 2015.
We heard updates from Gary Davis and Shaun
McKenzie about the BMW CCA Club Racing program.
I should note that Golden Gate Chapter is hosting a
Club race this June at Laguna Seca. Spectators are

And we were educated on the new Member
Recognition Awards program, now available to all
chapters. This program allows chapters to recognize
volunteer efforts within their chapters and the ability

We packed the room and were approached all
weekend with follow up questions from other chapters.
Perhaps the most valuable session was delivered by
a newly formed leadership committee made up of
chapter representatives from across the country. This
team was tasked with proposing solutions for some of
the clubs biggest challenges over the next many years.
Topics included administrative items such as moving
from paper to electronic insurance waivers, simplified
processes for securing event insurance, a new concept
for regional newsletters, and a new performance
benchmarking concept applicable to all chapters.
These are not easy topics of conversation yet the team
presented them fairly. A considerable amount of time
followed for questions and comments.

Oktoberfests in the region, dealer relationships, and
communication strategies.
GGC sent more delegates than any other chapter this
year in large part because we have many new board
members who have not participated in a national
conference before. It was a very productive conference
and reassuring to hear that chapters large and small
share the same passions and similar challenges as any

An Alternative to Run-Flat Tires:
Continental ExtremeContact DW
If you’ve followed my Toy Box adventures via the
Bombe magazine over the years, you may recall I’ve
been a fan of the Sumitomo HTR Z III for my old E36
M3. I felt for an everyday high performance tire, it
delivered easily 80% of the performance of the much
pricier performance tires for about 1/2 of the price.
Even today, TireRack still stocks them for $92 each in
the 245/40ZR17 size. It’s still one of the best tires out
there for enthusiasts who want to keep replacement
costs low, get as many miles as they can, and still retain
some performance in their daily driven cars. During the
ownership span of my E36 M3, I went through 5 sets of
Sumitomo tires and each set consistently maintained
good ride quality and noise characteristics as well as
decent grip for the GGC driving events I attended.
SO WHERE DO I STAND NOW?
This time around, I wanted to spend a little more
money on tires as I took a job with a significantly
shorter commute. I’ve recently been reading up on
threads on import car forums around the Continental
family of tires, namely the ExtremeContact DW line. It’s
an older design tire but still offers great value. The tire
is designed as a maximum performance summer tire
but with a couple interesting exceptions.

DRY & WET TRACK PERFORMANCE
Using BMWs, TireRack.com tested the Continental
ExtremeContact DW against such tires as the
Bridgestone S-04, Hankook Ventus, and Pirelli P Zero.
It won the overall test. While that isn’t surprising, what
is is that the tire also bested those brands in wet track
tests by a notable margin. Continental also designed
this particular tire with wet conditions in mind. This
feature comes in handy in sun-belt states where you
can enjoy the performance of a summer tire, but also
have higher margin of safety when it does rain. And
hence the “W” in DW for, you guessed it… wet.
WEIGHT
Not a lot of people think about tire weight, but in the
import car realm - BMWs included, a good street or
track car needs to keep weight to a minimum. For
the 245/50-17 size, if you took my past favorite, the
Sumitomo HTR Z III and put it on a scale, it’d weigh in
at 25 lbs.; the current street favorite Dunlop Direzza
weighs 24lbs; and the reigning king of tires, the
Michelin Pilot Super Sport comes in at 23lbs.
The Continental ExtremeContact DW? Just 22lbs.
If you are looking for a fairly cheap and simple way to
reduce unsprung weight, this tire is a good contender.

You can use the circle dots to measure how much of the tire you are using when
cornering too.
RIGHT: Perhaps one of THE coolest treadwear indicators out there.
If you can still see both the “D” and “W”, your tire is operating at it’s maximum
peformance level. When the “W” is no longer visible, your wet traction is reduced to dry
traction only. When the “D” is no longer visible, it’s time to get new tires.
DAY TO DAY DRIVING
Ok, so I’ve done the armchair tire evaluations, now you
are asking, “how is the tire in the daily grind of life?”
For the first few hundred miles, it’s been pretty darn
good. The tire is fairly quiet - no humming noises as it
moves along the road, but you do get feedback as to
the surface type (some people like that characteristic
in a tire, some don’t). With spirited freeway onramp approaches and exits, the Continentals offer a
decent amount of confidence - I tend to bomb these
regularly, so I personally love that. For a tire with such
a conservative tread pattern, steering input is still very
sharp and the sidewall is stiff. The ride quality is very
firm, so if you value soft and squishy the DW series
isn’t a tire for you.
CONCLUSION
Obviously this isn’t a hard-core tire review and many
club members would offer other opinions.
If you are shopping for a new set of shoes for your
BMW, also consider the Dunlop Direzza DZ102 or
Bridgestone Potenze RE760 Sport in the $125-$150
per tire price range. But I believe you’ll find for the
money, the Continental ExtremeContact DW is a solid
contender for your daily driven BMW.

Autocross #3 at Marina Airport
April 18 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Cost: $50
Our autocrosses are a competitive environment where a
cone track is setup in a big parking lot or airfield. We put
cars into classes based on a formula (considering weight,
torque, modifications, and several other factors), and drivers
compete against other cars within their class. Cars race
against the clock, not side-by-side.
We do not require previous high performance driver
training or experience, but participation in a Car Control
Clinic or similar training is highly recommended. First timers
and inexperienced autocrossers will be assigned a driver
coach to ensure they get the most out of their day.
Our events are very social and we welcome all makes of
cars, not just BMWs and MINI. Unlike some other clubs, we
don’t limit registrations from other marques. Everyone has
the same chance of getting in!
Registration for every autocross opens the Monday
following the previous month’s event.

Did you know that BMW CCA has an official racing program?
This is real wheel-to-wheel racing in track-prepared BMW
race cars. We invite all members to come watch the action
as there are sure to be some ‘special’ moments. It’s a great
chance to walk around the track and watch these drivers
attack the apexes or visit the cars and drivers in the paddock
between sessions. The event is free to spectators.
The June 27-28 Laguna Seca weekend will feature a huge

The 2015 Planning Meeting was called to order by President Eric
Ries at 11:28 AM.

3. Secretary’s Report
The December Board Meeting minutes were approved via email
by Board without appeal or contestation on January 19, 2015;
reading of the minutes will be waived.
4. Driving Events
Autocross (AX) report from Roberts indicated a safe and excellent
2014 Season; 13 solid Competitive AX events with 2 NonCompetitive “Fun Runs” in December. 2014 brought in ~$10K
in net income towards club operating activities. FFA approved
the continuation of activities at the Marina, CA site through
June 2015 with unknown probability for remainder of the year;
Team to continue extension efforts as events provide additional
membership, coaching experience for all drivers, and member
retention. GGC looking at a four event season in Marina as of
January 18th.

Airport site in Crows Landing, CA as a potential for both AX and
Car Control Clinics. Roberts and Board liked the option; however,
the sites lack of perimeter fencing is a problem. CCA would need
to contract out for fencing setup and tear down for each event.
Possibility of one event to figure out the operating procedures.
Additional sites being looked at in Santa Clara, CA and Moffett
Field, CA. Challenge with Santa Clara is possible noise restrictions
with new housing developments. Moffett Field availability
continues to be explored through in-house club contacts.
Car Control Clinics (CCC) report continued with site availability.
Magee will continue to execute five CCC events through second
quarter: Three Regular, One Teen, and One Advanced clinic.
Student Participation not as big of a challenge for 2015 as
volunteer instructors and sites. Due to course space at facility,
class sizes may decrease while extending the minor registration
cost difference to the drivers ($140 to $160).
5. Driving Schools
Discussion began with CCC looking to integrate its program
with a High Performance Drivers’Education (HPDE) course at
Thunderhill Raceway. Maher and Vinsel agree that it would be
a good addition to the overall weekend but that it might wear
drivers out too much; communications between the two Teams
will continue. Two Thunderhill events are on the schedule for 2015
and an additional date for Laguna Seca has been requested with
CCA on wait list. Board discussed with Chief Driving Instructors
which Thunderhill course would benefit its club members based
on club race at the end of 2015. Tentatively the Board thinks it’s
best to do five miles in August and three miles in November.
“The return of people wanting to go to driving school… with
wait lists” was the main topic with driving schools. HPDEs slightly
more expensive than other programs, but attendees understand
the value of quality coaching, classroom sessions, safety, and
field limit. Possibility to increase price at Laguna based on value
alone. Instructors go through a rigorous BMW CCA Instructor
Training School (ITS) designed to certify instructors. Recent
ITS evaluation resulted in 9 graduates out of 21; 3 of which are
within the GGC! GGC looking to use its new instructors and reach
out to near by chapters. in 2015 the CCA will try to bolster its
relationship with the Central Cal Chapter by doing a joint HPDE
school at Buttonwillow Raceway. Getting involved with nearby
CCA chapters will strengthen the brand, create new associations,
and add potential for additional driving schools in other parts of
California.

Sonoma Raceway in 2016 – Not impossible as long as instructors
are plentiful and attendees are willing to pay more than $1K for
a weekend. Reducing costs by half for a one day program was
discussed; however, there is the concern that students would not
get much out of one day. Board will continue to discuss as greater
interest and high participation rates may open the door for future
events at the Raceway.
6. Balance Sheet and Income Statement
Tamara Hull’s Treasurer’s Report began with looking at FY14’s
budget amounts against its actuals. The Board walked through the
Balance Sheet and Profit & Loss by driving event class. The GGC’s
14% increase in membership dues and ~$10K were highlighted
as factors contributing to the offset of routine maintenance and
unforeseen truck and trailer repairs. Retention of current members
was a small discussion at the end and the GGC is looking to invest
more into its programs.
7.Communications
An effective communication strategy was a hot topic as Board
finds not all members are being reached. Different mediums of
communications are available but people these days may be
too busy to read every email. Board to get a quote in order to
bring back monthly/quarterly Bombe Magazine in hopes that
items mailed are more personal. Cards and quarterly calendars
were discussed, but the challenge is making sure all events are
submitted on time three months out. GGC Forum was reported
not working effectively either as it is difficult to use; a price quote
to revamp with a separate sub domain will be most effective
fore future changes. All Board members to continue to look for
Communication Manager candidates within club. Lastly, Cowan
requested additional event submission requests.
8. Social Events
“Quality over quantity.” The GGC grows in membership and so
does the need to be more creative with events. Athena Brekke,
new Membership Chair, asked all present Board members and
area representatives for new and innovative ideas for 2015. Cars
& Coffee events are great ways for new membership, but fun and
engaging events like s cavenger hunts, driving tours, Holiday
Parties and beach BBQs are what keeps retention rates high. The
continuation of dealership engagement was also encouraged
as the GGC’s efforts in the previous year were successful with
multiple events in the second, and third quarter. The Secretary,
Paul Betancourt, communicated a request for quarterly events
from his nearby dealership in Seaside, CA; next dealership event
on GGC Planning Calendar is April 11, 2015.

9. Vice President’s Report
Volunteer Appreciation has always been apart of the GGC, but
newly elected VP Ryan Rich thinks efforts can be increased and
the Board agrees. In November Rich suggested that the Board
bring back the idea of tracking volunteered hours for events
like CCCs, AXs, and New Membership outreach. Almost every
weekend there are volunteers in the Bay Area that dedicate their
time to the club. Effective immediately, all members who help
with events will be tracked better by its Coordinators and Area
Representatives in an effort to show the clubs appreciation with
items like low cost trophies, gift certificates, and more written
thank you messages year around. A tool to track these volunteer
metrics will need to be created.
10.President’s Report
A seamless Transition for all new Board Members is what every
newly elected President wishes for. In 2015 Eric Ries looked to
his Board to continue the great efforts the GGC’s incumbents left
off with. “Keeping up the momentum” were Ries’ words and he
would like to see it with the continuation of all existing programs.
Attending the National Meeting was discussed in great detail in
hopes the newly elected Board would be able to participate as a
Team.
11.Members at Large
Prior to ending the 2015 Planning Meeting, Treasurer Tamara Hull
motioned that the Golden Gate Chapter have three Members
at Large for 2015: Jeff Cowan, Mark Magee, and Canyon Chan.
President Ries Seconded motion. Motion passed with an
unanimous Board vote.

Next meeting scheduled for February 19, 2015 at 7:00 PM in San
Mateo (TBD).

Motion: Eric Ries made a motion to adjourn the 2015 Planning
Meeting. Ryan Rich seconded the motion. Motion passed with an
