Cockapoo, Maltipoo, Spoodle
Labradoodle, Snoodle,
Yorkipoo! It’s a crazy world!
No it’s not a new kind of bad language or
even Internet slang but rather the names
of the newest breeds of designer dogs to
hit market and costing some people
hundreds of dollars. It all started in the
late 70’s in Australia with the breeding of
the Labradoodle - a hypoallergenic, nonshedding breed, combining a poodle and
a Labrador. The dog was originally
supplied for the blind but some
enterprising American thought it a very
good idea indeed.
For people with asthma, this was a great
idea - a biggish dog with wool instead of
hair. The hairless cat followed soon after
and now it all seems slightly out of
control, particularly in the USA.
Breeding a female poodle with a
Yorkshire Terrier, Cocker Spaniel
Maltese Terrier or Schnauzer, results in a
Yorkipoo, Cockapoo, Maltipoo and
Schnoodle!
Of course this new craze doesn’t please
everybody. Purebred dog
breeders are obviously
not
happy
and
curiously enough
the President of the
Mixed Breed Dog
Club of America
isn’t very pleased
either. She says “My
fear is that people will breed
them indiscriminately” and “Just because
you can, doesn’t mean you should!”
The alternative argument does seem to
have some scientific backing. Mixed
breeds – any mixed breed including your
“bitsa” breed (a bit of this and a bit of the
other) exhibit what scientists call “hybrid
vigour”. Unlike many pure breeds which
may and very often do suffer from a
range of hereditary health problems,
when two different breeds create a hybrid
version of themselves, “there seem to be
typically fewer health problems” says
one geneticist. This is of course is great
marketable news for pet shops!
The newest dog
breeding craze which
started in Australia.
Not everyone wants to jump on the
designer dog bandwagon. One vet and a
pet shop owner agreed that “these
designer dogs are nothing more than a
mixed breed with fancy names. And why
anyone would encourage the reckless
breeding with no particular heritage is
beyond us.”
The real problem as many people see it is
that we already have, in many parts of the
world, too many unwanted dogs.
The problem is caused mainly
by irresponsible dog
owners who do not de-sex
their dogs when they are
young. If you’re not
going to breed officially,
have your dog or bitch
sterilised early in their lives.
For female dogs, it’s healthier and
avoids later problems. For dogs it’s not
only healthy in preventing testicular
cancer but helps them to be less
aggressive and wander off. An intact dog
can sense a bitch in heat over 2
kilometres away! The result? Even more
unwanted sad dogs in shelters and
refuges.
Currently around the world, though, pure

breeds remain the favourites of
consumers. German Shepherd, Labrador
Retrievers and Cattle dogs are still
Australia’s favourite breeds. And happily
over 40% of people visiting the RSPCA
are looking for a dog “they like the look
of” rather than a specific breed of dog.
You can pick up the dog of your dreams
at any shelter for about $100 generally
including desexing.
Regardless of a dog’s heritage, most
veterinarians, pet storeowners and real
dog enthusiasts all agree that every dog is
different. One vet said “You need to do a
lot of research before you embark on
owning a dog. People should be very
wary of a trend like this. And remember
this dog is going to be a key member of
your family.” How true.
One last thought if you combined a Shih
Tzu and a Poodle would that be a “….”.
I don’t think I’ll go there!

WHAT DO DOG LOVERS SAY.
WHY DOES MY DOG
DO THAT?
THE AUSTRALIAN KELPIE.
DOG’S LIFE COMPETITION
WHY DOES MY DOG DO THAT?
Why do dogs lick each other and me?
Why does my dog jump up on me?
Dogs lick to groom themselves and others. Mothers lick
their puppies to clean them and stimulate their urination
and defecation. Older puppies and the young of wild dogs
lick the mouths of the adults as a greeting to stimulate them
to regurgitate. The puppies eat this regurgitated food as
they are weaned from their mother and begin to eat solid
food. As the puppies grow older, the licking becomes a
way of greeting and increasing bonding between pack
members. For pet dogs, licking is a way to greet us and say
“it’s good to see you!” and strengthen their relationship
with us.
In the wild dogs are taught to jump up both as a playing
mechanism, as a lesson in predator behaviour and as a
means of challenging other pack members in the
hierarchical scheme of things. You should discourage
puppies from jumping up on you - it can be frightening for
strangers and dangerous too. Freezing your actions and
correcting the dog’s behaviour by growling work best
because they mimic the behaviour of a dominant dog.
Why does my dog wag his tail?
As pack animals, dogs learn a method of communication
through wagging their tails. The tail is extremely
expressive and an important part of the body posture. A
friendly dog will communicate his feelings by loosely
wagging his tail. But, a wagging tail does not always
indicate friendliness. Dominant or aggressive dogs may
wag their tail, but the tail is held high and maybe just the
tip of the tail is moving rapidly. A playful dog will also
hold his tail high but it will be wagging greatly from side
to side. A dog that holds his tail low and wags it stiffly may
be indicating he is submissive or afraid.
Why does my dog chase his tail and then chew on it?
Dogs chase their tails for several reasons. If your
veterinarian examines your dog and doesn’t find any fleas
or problems with your dog’s anal glands, then you could be
dealing with a behaviour problem. In some dogs, tail
chasing can be an obsessive-compulsive disorder. In
others, it’s a source of attention. Some dogs if they are
causing harm to themselves may need drug therapy in
addition to behaviour modification to solve the problem.
WHY FEED YOUR POOCH DRY FOOD?
PET BENEFITS:
Teeth: Dry pet food such as PURINA ONE is preferable to canned
pet food because the abrasive action while chewing dry food helps
to prevent plaque build up and is therefore better for the teeth.
Taste: Dry pet food remains fresh and appetising in your pet’s feeding dish for longer periods of time.
Canned food tends to dry out in the bowl after a short time.
Gastrointestinal tract: Pets are healthier when fed a consistent, good quality diet.
Switching diets, as often occurs when providing numerous canned food varieties may lead to
gastrointestinal upset in animals.
Some dog behaviours explained . . .
Why does my dog constantly chew on her feet
and hind legs?
illness. If chemicals have not been used on the grass, your
pooch can graze away!
Chewing on the feet and hind legs is a classic sign of
allergies in dogs, much like itchy eyes and a runny nose in
humans. Dogs have the same allergy-sensitive cells people
have in their eyes and nose, but they are located in dogs’
skin and ears. Therefore, dogs with allergies show signs of
itchy feet, itchy skin, and ear infections.
Why Does My Dog Roll in Stinky Things?
The most common allergy dogs experience is a reaction to
flea bites, called flea allergy dermatitis. Even if your dog is
protected against fleas, by a collar or treatment, one flea
can secrete enough saliva in a bite to cause itching and
discomfort. Dogs can also be allergic to ingredients in their
food or mosquito bites. They can even have reactions to
some of the same things that cause human hay fever:
pollen, dust, mould, and grasses.
Consult your veterinarian about the best way to make your
dog more comfortable.
For some reason, things like dead animals, manure, and
garbage are magnets to dogs, and there is nothing in the
world they’d rather smell like. Some people theorise that
dogs’ instinct tells them that the terrible smells will cover
up their scent and make it easier for them to sneak up on
prey. Maybe so, or maybe they just like to smell awful!
Regardless of why they do it, the best way for you to stop
your doggy from diving into the garbage pile is never
giving him the chance. Keep him fenced in your yard, pick
up any manure in the area, and keep the garbage in trash
cans that won’t pop open if he knocks them over. Keep him
on a leash when you go on walks, and keep a sharp eye out
for any smelly things that may strike his fancy. And, of
course, you could send for Aussie Pooch Mobile to help
solve the stink problem!
Why Does My Dog Eat Grass?
Grass eating by dogs and cats is considered normal by
most veterinarians. Dogs in the wild do the same thing to
supplement their diet with vegetation. I would only be
concerned about access to grass that has been treated with
herbicides, insecticides, or fertilisers that might cause
Body Condition: Canned pet food generally contains more fat than
dry pet food on a dry matter basis. Therefore, it is often easier to control
body weight when dry foods are fed as the source of nutrition.
Economical: It is much mor economical to feed dry food.
As canned food is about 75% water, most of what is being paid
for is the cost of the tin and water. Gram for gram there is more nutrition in dry food.

Diaries of a Dog Therapist
“Everything in the garden wasn’t Rosey”
When Margaret Hooton Bark Busters therapist from
Chesterfield England was called out to treat ‘Rosey’ a
10 year old West Highland White Terrier, Margaret
figured she was just on a routine training mission
as she had been called in by Rosey’s owners to
assist in training her to wear a muzzle.
Margaret also organised for ‘Rosey’ to receive a visit from
Ken Woodacre (Bark Busters special Osteopath) while
she was at Johan’s, who was going to realign her
frame while she was under anaesthetic.
This all came together wonderfully.
Johan discovered that Rosey would have
suffered tremendous pain every time her mouth
was clenched closed with a muzzle. Ken
Woodacre found that both Rosey’s shoulders
were out of alignment, as well as her neck and
two lumber vertebrae.
Rosey’s owners were in the habit of having
Rosey regularly groomed for her personal
cleanliness. Although normally a very affable
little dog. Rosey acted quite aggressively
when being tethered or groomed and a
muzzle was needed to ensure the process
could be carried out with no harm coming
to the groomer.
Because of her advanced years Margaret’s
keen canine savvy instinct told her there was
more to this than just a little dog being naughty.
She suspected it was physical and not
behavioural. On closer inspection of Rosey’s gait
and posture she spotted that the dog’s frame was
out of alignment and would need some specialist
treatment.
Margaret’s big task was talking Rosey’s sceptical owners into
making the journey from Chesterfield to Manchester to visit Dr.
Johan Joubert BVSc MRCVS the canine orthodontist that works on
many of the Bark Busters dogs.
Rosey’s owners agreed, after all she was their little princess and they
would leave no stone unturned if it meant helping their special dog.
It was a testament to Rosey’s wonderful
nature that she didn’t show more aggression
than she did. It is obvious that she must have
suffered in silence for many years, but could not
avoid voicing her disapproval when the groomer
arrived.
Her owners were thrilled that Margaret’s keen eye
had saved the day. To Margaret it was all in a day’s
work of being a Bark Busters therapist and she felt she
had made a little dog very happy.

How much do you know
about Pet First Aid?
One little book could help you save a life!
How well do you really know your dog? His normal
temperature, his normal mouth colour, his urination patterns,
what does a healthy faeces look like? Sound gruesome?
Not really and frankly not knowing some basic information about
your friend could make it difficult for you to realise that he’s sick!
Don’t worry, there’s an excellent little book written by Carole
Harvey - Stevenson and published by the Animal Emergency
Centre in Brisbane. I’m sure there are similar publications in your
state or country but if not write to the Brisbane Centre. The booklet is a full and
practical guide to complete first aid for your dog or pet.
Starting with “Getting to know your pet” it continues with The Principles of First
Aid – the aims, the rules and the class of emergency you might be facing. How to
move an injured pet is a necessary lesson and it is complete with diagrams. The
book leads you gently up the path of practical care.
The treatment of shock, haemorrhages, wounds in general, basic life support
systems, chest trauma, choking, fractures, dislocations, burns, scalds, poisoning,
bites and stings. It’s all covered in complete detail and laid out in an easy to read
style. The section on “Poisoning” is a must read since it deals with toad, tick and
spider poisoning in some detail.
I urge you to obtain this booklet. It’s a must for the kitchen shelf alongside the one
for human First Aid.
If you can’t find it in your State or Country write to:

Fleas Breed in Warm Winter Homes
A common misconception is that fleas die off during
the autumn / winter period when the outside
temperature drops. As a result, many pet owners
cease using flea control during this time. However,
your warm, heated home provides the perfect
environment for fleas to breed.
Fleas on your pet in winter are not just a nuisance for the
animal, they can also affect the entire family.
Don’t forget to treat your cat as well as your dog. A large survey of pets in Australia
found that 65% of untreated cats and 47% of untreated dogs had signs of fleas
during the winter period.
Remember, even a modest flea infestation during winter can give rise to significant
flea contamination in your home. The majority of fleas are unseen, as they live off
the pet in the environment, in carpets, on the lounge, in bedding and around
skirting boards. To effectively control the problem, you must eliminate this
reservoir of developing fleas as well as the adult fleas you can see on your pet.
Treating dogs and cats monthly with FRONTLINE Plus is the best defence against
flea infestation.
Because pets may share their neighbourhood with other domestic and wild
animals they will always be coming into contact with new fleas. Consequently,
even when a pet is treated monthly it is normal to sometimes see the odd flea. Yes,
this can be very frustrating, but don’t panic. FRONTLINE Plus will kill those newly
acquired fleas within 18 hours.

HOT SPOTS
What are they and what you can do about them?
Hot spots are those ugly, infected sores which appear as if by magic on your Golden Retriever,
Labrador, Shepherd. More correctly called “acute moist dermatitis,” hot spots are wounds dogs
inflict upon themselves through excessive chewing, licking and/or scratching of one particular area
(typically on the neck, face, chest, back, rump and flanks).
Hot spots can be precipitated by a number of conditions such as fleas, insect bites, ear infections,
anal gland problems, allergies, skin damage, infection or irritants (lawn sprays, etc.) Some dogs
only have problems during a specific time of the year (shedding season or hot, humid weather) and
there may be a definite relationship between hot spots and stress or boredom. A new dog in the
family, a change in routine or even lack of exercise may be the underlying reason for your dog’s
hot spot.
Here are some hints to help avoid hot spots:
✪ Keep grooming your dog to get rid of all shedding undercoat. But, be very careful not to scrape
or damage skin by exerting too much pressure with comb or brush.
✪ Coats left damp can cause trouble. When your dog spends all day swimming, take a few
minutes at night to rinse the dog off with clean water and dry the coat thoroughly with towels
and a hair dryer set on cool.
✪ Because air cannot circulate easily, ear infections in floppy-eared dogs are common and can
promote hot spots on the cheeks and under ears. Retrievers need extra care, especially during
the summer and after swimming.
✪ Dogs with severe or persistent hot spots will need to be seen by a veterinarian. Treatments may
include shaving the area and administering antibiotic cream, oral antibiotics or steroids. This
should stop the itch-scratch cycle and antibiotics will fight the infection.
✪ Minor hot spots or those that crop up on weekends and holidays can be given first aid
treatment. Clip the hair around the infected area and gently wash it with antibacterial soap or
warm salty water and rinse well.
✪ A natural approach can be equally effective. Your Aussie Pooch Operator carries an all purpose
‘Dermal Ointment’ that works wonders in treating minor allergic skin problems, hot spots and
minor wounds as well as a ‘Natural Ear Cleaner’ that will help prevent ear infections. These
products are from our ‘Vets All Natural’ range.

THE
AUSTRALIAN KELPIE
8
The Australian Kelpie is a native Australian
breed developed from collies brought
from the north of England that were
smooth haired with pricked ears and
stoutly built. Crossed with other herding
breeds to create a working dog suitable for
the vast outback of Australia. Apparently
the name “Kelpie came from one particular
dog and means in Gaelic “water sprite.” Besides
being outstanding herders of sheep, cattle and poultry, they are
also used extensively for search and rescue, and drug detection.
Friendly and trainable they are not particularly suited to small
back yards or apartments since they are a hard working, energetic,
seeking only to exercise hard and long in wide open spaces.
The Kelpie is extremely loyal and
intelligent and will bond strongly to one
owner. If you’ve heard the phrase that “the
Australian economy was born on a sheep’s
back” it is very largely due to the Kelpie
that it was such a success.
Colours are a problem and no
two breeders can agree
apparently. The Australian
Kelpie Standard states: black
with or without tan markings;
blue (grey) ranging from dark to
light; red ranging from chocolate
to light red; fawn ranging from
dark to light and finally tan
ranging from dark to cream.
Minimal white spots or small blaze and white socks is a no no.
No matter what the colour, if you have acreage
this is the dog for you!

My dog loved the business
so much . . . I bought it!
You’ve probably dreamt of being your own boss and running a
successful business in a field you enjoy. Well, if you love dogs
and enjoy the outdoors you can turn your dream into a reality.
Wade Rutledge from Glenwood in NSW did.
Wade had spent the last ten years of his working career
as an account executive with major international and
national companies. Travel and long working hours
was taking him away from his family and he was
feeling a need to escape the corporate lifestyle.
Wade says, “I had always wanted to start my own
business, and I saw franchising as a low risk way to
do this. It allowed me to be trained in a new field and
gave me the opportunity to be branded with a wellknown business. I would also be able to use my
customer service and selling skills to enhance my
business profitability”.
Wade met his local Aussie Pooch franchisee when he had
his own dog “Tora” washed. Seeing first hand how the
business worked and how much Tora loved it he knew this was
the business for him.
Wades first year was so successful he was awarded The New Franchisee Of
The Year in NSW. The multi award winning Aussie Pooch Mobile franchise
system has been established since 1990 and is the largest service of its kind.
It provides you with an opportunity to build a successful business on solid
foundations. Franchise owners come from all walks of life with the most
common characteristic being their love of dogs.
Loving dogs and having a will to succeed is a
fantastic start, but you also require a commitment
to our proven system. You have Aussie
Pooch’s 100% commitment to ensure you receive
the proper ongoing support and training to enhance your
profitability and success.
You will be provided with…
Comprehensive traineeship: where you will become

“It is wonderful to work in a friendly fun environment. My
