2011 VILLAGE GUIDE
Borrego Springs is literally a village in a park. No other U.S. community is completely
surrounded by park wilderness. As one of only two certified Dark Sky Communities in the
country, we are far removed from urban sprawl, noise, and light pollution. You won’t even
find a stoplight here!
What you will find is that Borrego Springs has much to offer – as a travel destination
and as a special place to live and do business. The more you explore here, the more
you’ll discover. Most who visit us return often, and some end up living here, full-time or
seasonally. Prepare to relax, unwind, stare at the galaxy, and experience the peace,
darkness, and silence of California’s Secret Desert™.
This 2011 Village Guide introduces you to the businesses, services, and organizations
dedicated to bringing a high quality of life to our visitors and residents alike. Whether
you’re searching for lodging, dining, shopping, events, entertainment, or professional
services, you’ll find what you need in these pages. Our goal is to make it easy for you to
Shop Borrego First™.
We sincerely appreciate your patronage of our advertisers. Our businesses are owned
and managed by real and interesting people who’ve invested their dreams and their
futures in Borrego Springs. We hope you enjoy meeting them!

A message from
San Diego County Supervisor Bill Horn
2011 Borrego Springs Village Guide
On behalf of the County of San Diego, welcome to Borrego
Springs. I am honored to represent the people of Borrego
Springs as their Supervisor for North County’s Fifth District.
Borrego Springs is a gem in our County, a community with
clean air, stunning desert flowers, a magnificent sense of
history, friendly people, more than enough “elbow room,” and
not a stoplight within 50 miles!
It also is a thriving community of business people, educators,
health specialists and retired individuals who understand how
to treat the people and meet their every need.
Over the years, I have been pleased to award grants from our discretionary Neighborhood
Reinvestment fund for the Borrego Springs Library, the Anza-Borrego Foundation, and the
Christmas celebration at, where else, Christmas Circle Park.
The guide you have in your hands will be a great help in getting to know Borrego Springs and its
many events and will assist you to be part of what makes this community extra special.

The Deser t Blooms
by betsy knaak, executive director, ABDNHA
Photo © Dennis Mammana
When do the wildflowers bloom? That’s the big question!
When winter rains and temperatures are just right, the unpredictable show attracts visitors
worldwide in February and March. Look for vibrant pink Sand Verbena, paper white Dune Evening
Primrose, and the golden Desert Sunflowers and Desert Dandelions en masse over sandy dunes;
the blue-purple Phacelia, and Canterbury Bells rising out of rocky soil closer to the canyons; and
the single Fivespot, Ghost Flower, or the enchanting Desert Lily.
Other spring color includes native cacti, shrubs, and trees, and the red haze of the flame-tipped
Ocotillos throughout the valley. As the temperatures climb, cacti reveal large, intricate blossoms of
magenta and chartreuse. In insect language, they shout, “Here I am!”
But there’s a secret – desert flowers actually bloom year-round. April is the best time for greenstemmed Palo Verde trees drenched with yellow blossoms, and blooming stalks of Desert Agave
and Mojave Yucca descend into the valley. In late spring Scarlet Bugler and Prickly Poppy decorate
roadsides at higher elevations. And in June, the Smoke Tree, native to our desert washes, can
be totally obscured by its dark blue flowers! In fall, after summer rains, the sunny Chinchweed
appears. Chuparosa, or “hummingbird bush,” often blooms in winter, offering nectar from tubular,
cherry-red blossoms.
Visit the Borrego Desert Nature Center, operated by the Anza-Borrego Desert Natural History
Association (ABDNHA) at 652 Palm Canyon Drive. Chat with our knowledgeable volunteers and
staff, and pick up a color wildflower brochure ($1) and our free handout, “What’s Bloomin’ Where?”
To learn more about desert wildflowers online, visit www.abdnha.org. You may also sign up for an
e-postcard notification at www.theabf.org or call the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Wildflower
Hotline at 760-767-4684 .

Popular Hiking Destinations:
Borrego Palm Canyon – 3 miles roundtrip
This family-friendly hike begins at Borrego Palm
Canyon Campground. The gently climbing trail leads
to a native palm grove where wildlife abounds. Pick
up a self-guided trail brochure at the visitor center,
which describes plants and geology along the way.
Park day-use fee will be charged.
Hellhole Canyon – 5 miles roundtrip
Travel west on S22 for less than a mile and park
at Hellhole Canyon parking area. Follow the
well-beaten path into the canyon until you reach
Maidenhair Falls, a sparkling 20-foot waterfall.
This is a fairly difficult hike and some rock
scrambling will be required.

Camping and Day Use
Developed Campgrounds
• Borrego Palm Canyon, Tamarisk Grove, Vern Whitaker Horse Camp
and Bow Willow
• Day-use fee: $8.00 per vehicle (collected at developed campgrounds)
• Visit the park’s website (www.parks.ca.gov) or contact the Visitor
Center for current camping fees
Primitive and Backcountry Camping
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park remains one of the few places in the
country where open camping is permitted. All primitive camping is free.
Primitive Camping Guidelines
• Camp at least 100 feet away from water
• Fires permitted in metal containers only. Fires built on the ground
are not permitted and will be cited. Please do not collect wood
• Park on the side of the road so others may pass
• Do not trample vegetation or drive over geologic formations
• Pack it in, pack it out: keep a clean camp and take all trash with you
Background Photo: Kati Cowan. Inset photos: Jeff Young, Diana Lindsay and Franz Boschiero
Dogs in the Park
Dogs are allowed in campgrounds and on dirt roads in the park. They
must be on a 6-foot leash and may not be taken on trails or cross-country.
This is for the safety of the park’s native animals, as well as the safety of
your dog. Rattlesnakes, coyotes and cactus are common hazards, and it is
common for dogs to suffer from burned pads on their feet.
Fonts Point – short walk to viewpoint
Following S22 east, turn right at Fonts Wash at
mile 29.3. Drive 4.5 miles and take the one-way
loop to small parking area. It’s a short uphill walk
to the dropoff, where you’ll have magnificent
views of the Borrego Badlands and the entire
Borrego Valley. 4WD recommended.
Pictograph Trail – 2 to 3 miles roundtrip
Follow Hwy S2 ~ 6 miles south of Scissor’s Crossing
to Blair Valley turnoff at mile 22.9. Travel 3.6 miles
ending at Pictograph Trailhead. This kid-friendly trail
leads to a pictograph-covered boulder. Continue ½
mile to reach Smuggler’s Canyon. Trail stops at the
edge of a dry waterfall with views of Vallecito Valley.

Mid-Century Modern
Architecture & Design
by bill lawrence
“...design that at its core, seeks to blur the lines between
the indoors and the stunning beauty of the desert.”
Borrego Springs features mid-century modern desert architecture and design that at its core,
seeks to blur the lines between the indoors and the stunning beauty of the desert.
Developed during the height of the mid-century modern movement (1945-1970), Borrego
Springs retains much of its historic fabric: a unique community asset worth preserving.
The work of Southern California’s most notable architects can be found in the neighborhoods
of Borrego, including homes designed by Cliff May, Henry Hester, Bill Krisel, William Kesling,
William Cody, Lloyd Ruocco and Richard Zerbe. Explore the neighborhoods of Deep Well
(across from Borrego Ranch Resort), the Estate Area (Verbena Drive) and de Anza Country
Club for examples of “modern” desert living. (Please note these are private homes; observe
only from the street. Please do not disturb residents.)
Borrego’s mid-century modern design is also evidenced in numerous public buildings, from
the Richard Zerbe designed “Borrego Springs Mall” on Palm Canyon Drive to the Hester and
Jones designed “Borrego Springs Resort” or “Hoberg’s” (Palms at Indian Head). Semi-annual
tours of Borrego’s mid-century modern architecture are scheduled, which include interiors of
residences.
More information on both Borrego’s mid-century modern architecture and future tours can be
found at www.borregomodern.com.

Distinctive
desert dining
Yes, Borrego Springs actually is in the “middle of nowhere,” but that doesn’t
mean you can’t enjoy fine and casual dining. What are you looking for?
Find romantic flair at the popular French Corner where the memorable décor is matched by the menu
and exclusive wine list. Daily specials offer delightful variety for lunch and dinner, including mussels,
steak au poivre, and classic coq au vin. Delectable crepes, soups, and salads are followed by mouthwatering desserts. Mais oui, reservations are recommended.
For comfortable elegance, try The Arches at Borrego Springs Resort. The bar and dining room have
incredible views across manicured golf greens to the Santa Rosas. Reserve a patio table to savor the
scenery with your meal. Favorites include steaks and seafood, and a spectacular chicken potpie.
Craving Italian? Head out to Assagio at the Borrego Valley Airport. The full-service bar looks over the
runway, with can’t-be-beat sunset views. The menu features Italian favorites, plus steaks, seafood, and
a lovely wine list, all at reasonable prices.
Find mid-century mystique at the Krazy Coyote and Red Ocotillo at the Palms at Indian Head, which
oozes history and atmosphere. The Red Ocotillo all-day menu includes everything from scrumptious
omelettes, burgers, and sandwiches to fruit cobblers. Starting at 5 pm, you can choose lamb chops,
steaks, and even ahi sashimi from the Krazy Coyote menu.
Local favorites for casual dining round out the picture. Carlee’s is a treasured gathering place offering
great food, a lively bar, and friendly faces – and karaoke on Thursday and Saturday evenings!
Carmelita’s, known for carne asada and fabulous guacamole, bustles with happy patrons, breakfast
through dinner. And Kendall’s Café, another popular local institution, serves in the very best “diner
tradition.”
You won’t find any chain fast food here, but Jilberto’s taco shop fills the bill with tasty burritos, tacos,
and salsas. Stop in at Calico’s for early morning coffee or lunch and the best pizza in town. And be sure
to wander over to the Fudge Factory for a sweet fix – homemade fudge and Blue Bunny ice cream.

sculptures
If you’re not prepared, the sight is startling. What are those creatures in the
middle of the desert? Is it a mirage? Why are they there? And who made them?
Borrego Springs is fast becoming known for its magical (some say surreal) menagerie of freestanding
life-size sculptures of the prehistoric creatures that roamed the valley millions of years ago. The gifts
of visionary town benefactor Dennis Avery, the sculptures sit on his private parcels known as Galleta
Meadows Estate, which are open to the public. The first sculptures were installed in April 2008, and
most of them are easily accessible from Borrego Springs Road, north and south.
The sculptures, based on renditions in the book Fossil Treasures of the Anza-Borrego Desert,
are painstakingly crafted of metal by sculptor Ricardo Breceda of Perris, California. He welds scrap
reinforcement bars, wire, and metal together and then adds life-like texture by pounding the materials
with hammers.
Now numbering in the dozens, the creatures appear to be a natural part of the landscape, and
discovering them makes for a desert safari adventure. The camels, sloths, llamas, wild horses, sabertooth cats, mammoths, giant birds, wild pigs, sheep, raptors, and tortoises look very much at home, as
well they should. Fossil discoveries here reveal the vertebrates date from the Pliocene-Pleistocene and
Miocene eras, three million years ago.
Recently, Avery and Breceda have expanded the collection to include noted humans, including Mexican
explorer Juan Bautista de Anza, who trekked through this desert with a missionary expedition bound
for San Francisco, and field workers who toiled here picking grapes prior to the historic United Farm
Workers boycott in the late 1960’s.
The project combines Avery’s creativity with his passion for paleontology and preserving open space,
and we are the beneficiaries of his generosity.
To find the sculptures, see the map on the following pages. For more information photos, and videos,

SPRING. Wildflowers or not, spring is a sea change. Blustery winds blow, we sense the
warm days to come. More sun and longer days mean more time outdoors. Golfing, hiking,
tennis, photography, cycling – we want to be outside! In March we welcome the Circle of
Art, the Art Guild Art Faire, the Plein Air Invitational and gala gallery events. We bask in
desert sun and warmth. Enchanting!

Our very own Performing Arts Center (www.bspac.net) anchors a flourishing arts community, dating
from 1950, when Lon Cheney, Jr. started the first theater group. Now, the 181-seat theater is a venue
for a range of engaging performances, including drama, music, dance, and lecture programs, under
the creative guidance of Jonathan Mittleman, Managing Director.
The theater’s Opening Gala is November 20, followed by a festive production of “Christmas on the
Radio” in mid-December. In January, a talented local cast will present “A Life in the Theater,” by
David Mamet. In February we’ll welcome the San Diego City Ballet. “The Royal Family,” by George
Kaufman and Edna Ferber, is the March headliner, along with a special performance, “Music of
WWII,” later in the month. The annual Wine Tasting Fundraiser, hosted by the Krazy Coyote, is March
28 (you’re invited!), and the season winds down April 2 with a community Dance Recital. Rounding
out the calendar is the Community Concert Series, which features a stunning array of international
talents. Never dark, the BSPAC also hosts the popular waaaaaaay-off-Broadway Readers’ Theater
productions during the summer.
Our lively community of fine artists, including members of the Art Guild, a well-respected local
organization, offers a wealth of visual delights, many displayed in conveniently located in-town
galleries. See their work at Sally Rosen’s Gourd Art, Liesel Paris, The Matson Gallery, SoShowMe,
Tumbleweed Trading Company, and Trails West, our newest gallery. All will happily welcome visitors
to browse their collections.
Art lovers should not miss a visit to the Borrego Art Institute in The Mall (www.borregoartinstitute.
org). They feature classes, workshops, shows, and enjoyable gala openings. There you’ll find works
by local artists in watercolor, oil, photography, sculpture, jewelry, and ceramics. March 14 – 19, 2011,
the Art Institute will sponsor the 5th annual Plein Air Invitational, which brings dozens of notable
painters to town for a busy week of outdoor painting, receptions, and shows.
For a most-festive art celebration, join us for the annual Circle of Art (www.circle-of-art.org) March 19
& 20, when our beloved Christmas Circle is transformed into a colorful outdoor gallery. A true feast
for the eyes, Circle of Art features the works of more than 70 artists in a variety of media.
Another artistic “must do” is a driving tour on Borrego Springs Road, where the amazing sculptures
of artist Ricardo Breceda will delight and astound you. It’s all waiting for you in Galleta Meadows
locations; see the map in the center of this book.

the secret
Only 2-3 hours from most of Southern California, and many people have never heard
of us. Is that possible? A vast park and desert playground just over the mountains from
the coast? How could anything like it stay
secret from 20 million people?
Yet here you’ll discover a serene and
peaceful valley. Real darkness. No noise.
No store, hotel, or restaurant chains. No
crowds. No traffic – not even a traffic light.
Now your secret adventure begins.
the wonder
Broad expanses of open desert run right up
to the feet of ancient mountains. Badlands
and canyons weave and twist beneath
rugged cliffs. Be amazed by timeless, open
spaces, the absolute silence, and the wide
variety of life. You could spend a lifetime
here turning corners, opening doors,
discovering secret after secret...
42
the joys
So many things to see and do!
This is hikers’ and explorers’
heaven – sign up for guided
hikes, or go off on your own.
Cyclists can puff up and down
slopes, tear along flats, or
discover 500 miles of back
roads. Photo opportunities
abound – from before dawn
well into starry nights. Follow
the flowers or go on a bird
walk. Visit a gallery, shop a bit.
Take a class, or attend a concert, play, or lecture. Learn more about the geology and
paleontology of this unique area. Try a desert tour with an experienced guide. Perhaps a
round of golf with breathtaking views? Tennis, anyone?
borrego springs
is at the center. It’s
the place to stay, rest,
refresh, dine, and gather.
Surprisingly comfortable,
with a surprising range of
choices to meet your tastes
and needs. Come share
our secrets – you’ll soon be
back for more!
