Issue 26, April 2014 Uinta senior wins PowerBall jackpot GENEROUS NEWLYWED DONATES $1.8 MILLION TO CENTER ! GROUND-BREAKING ON NEW SPA NEXT WEEK ! WORLD-FAMOUS CHEF JOINS KITCHEN STAFF ! STEAK & LOBSTER FOR BIRTHDAY LUNCHES !When he stopped for gas and a Powerball ticket on his way to Bear Lake, Uinta Senior Center regular Dave Moon gave a cheeky wink to the comely 38-year-old gas station attendant and said, “If I win, I’m coming back to marry you.” Moon made good on his promise, marrying Renee Jager of Saint Charles, Idaho, outside the Minnetoka Market where the pair first met. Knowing that life is short, Moon not only seized the moment by marrying Jager in short order, he also took the cash payout when he won the $96.5 million jackpot. His 55,351,107.35 payout immediately started burning a hole in his pocket. “What good is money, if you can’t share it with the people you care about,” he asked. To that end, Moon has shared his unexpected boon with friends and family, including the Uinta Senior Center. “He’s always been a lucky SOB,” his younger brother, Wes Moon, said. “As far back as I can remember, he won Food Network star Bobby Flay joins the Uinta Senior Center kitchen staff. everything from rock-paper-scissors to log rolling. He’s a very lucky man.” And generous. Moon earmarked a $1.8 million donation to Uinta Senior Center to go towards meals, facilities and other services. Specifically, Moon hired Food Network star Bobby Flay to cook at the center for a month and transform the menu and ingredients going forward. “I’ve watched the center struggle with the resources to provide us with healthy meals over the years. They do great work,” Moon said. “Now, the award-winning kitchen staff will be able to kick it up a notch and work with an Iron Chef.” Flay’s wife Stephanie March, who plays no-nonsense DA Alex Cabot on “Law & Order,” will teach yoga, kickboxing and needlepoint while Flay heats up the kitchen. In addition to providing muchneeded funds for meals, Moon has asked the center to add state-of-the-art spa facilities on site, which seniors will have access to free of charge. From manicures to massages, haircuts to hot tubs, the senior center will be the best in the nation when Moon is finished. Moon’s winning numbers were his birthday, his mom’s birthday and his brother’s birthday. Yes, you guessed, it, birthdays are super important to him. That’s why he’s sponsoring steak and lobster for the birthday lunches going forward as well as $250 gift certificates to Smith’s for everyone celebrating their birthdays. Moon, who was born and raised in Evanston, says this initial donation is only the beginning. Everyone at the center is getting a different gift from Moon. Turn the page to find your name and gift amount. Happy April Fool’s Day Sadly, especially for Dave Moon, nothing on the preceding page was true, except that Moon is a wonderful and generous person. While we’re not getting a spa any time soon, the senior center offers many wonderful services of which you can avail yourselves. In addition to delicious meals, the center offers bingo, bunko, billiards and other things that start with letters other than B. Further, Uinta Senior Citizens runs Uinta Home Health and Hospice. Attentive, friendly employees !10 April 2014 Bridger Valley activity committee The meeting was called to order by President Don Carpenter at 12:35pm on Feb. 28. Winners will be kept track of for all games for future prizes. Members present Site Director Kris Stringer, Activities DirectorCrystal LaFond, President-Don Carpenter, Carlene Walker, Ann Covolo, Janice Clayton, Gale Niemi, Odena Bluemel, Sharon Walker and Lawayne Hurdsman. Bring a friend for friendship day can be any day of the month and both will receive a free meal. ! ! Members absent Gloria Rasmussen and Carolyn Gaylord ! Minutes were read and approved by Sharon, seconded by Ann. ! The March agenda was discussed and volunteers assigned for the activities. Phone calls will be made by Gale and Odena in March for the lunch birthday invitations. ! Crystal said that she spoke with Virginia at the Pioneer newspaper and it would not be a problem to have information about the center added to the paper. ! Kris suggested we have rules for the committee, but not bylaws as bylaws would make us liable. Don suggested we still think about having some rules. ! The Valentine’s Day Party was discussed. Most opinions were favorable on the mystery dinner. Sharon asked why Evanston had a steak and shrimp dinner. Kris said that Evanston center charged for their dinner while we did not. ! HIPAA laws were discussed. We were told of some things we cannot do anymore, such as list names on the birthday board. Consent forms must be signed before pictures can be published in the newspaper. We will be informed of more changes. ! Saturday lunch will be a grill and Sunday lunch more of a dinner. ! ! Foot clinic was discussed. Why was it put in Lyman? Why are seniors not bused who cannot drive over there? Kris said much has to do with funding and usage of buildings. ! Birthday party lunch will be moved to the second Friday of the month starting in April. Julie Johnson will be the new birthday cake baker. ! Pizza bingo was discussed. Some asked why pizza could not be cooked at the center and it was brought up that there are rules over nutrition and who cooks it if it is done at the center. It was decided to keep Pizza Hut as the purchase place and funding is OK for that. Participants can bring salad and dessert, if they like. Motion made by Don seconded by Ann to keep things as they are. ! Kris will check on bus usage for some surprise trips this summer. ! Crystal will be getting bus training and CPR first aid training in March. ! Seniors would like to be included in some Evanston trips such as the Hale Center Theater so budgets for such activities will be explored. !Don read notes in the suggestion box that suggested things stay the same with no changes. !Kris discussed a little about what was said at the meeting with legislatures and the senior centers will probably have some budget cuts in the future. !Janice asked a few questions about the representatives for our board. Can someone speak at the meetings and sit in to hear what is happening? !Meeting adjourned by Don and seconded by Ann at 1:30pm. !11 April 2014 Senior Moment: Duane and Mary Johnson By Debbie Terech Riverton, WY Born in 1931, my dad was the third of four children. Dad was raised on a farm. They grew their own food, raised their own beef, and plowed the fields. He lost his father when he was only 16. Dad worked hard with siblings and the help of neighbors to keep things going. Dad took a brief trip down the wild side in his beloved yellow convertible. He loved to cruise the rodeos, then he met mom. My mom actually stood him up on their first date because dad was a little too flirtatious with the local gals. He did not give up and they were married in 1951. My mom was 16 and dad was almost 18. Prior to their marriage, dad joined the Navy on July 1, 1950. He was shipped to Japan. He earned a brief leave, came home to Glendive, Montana, and married mom. They were separated for almost two years. Mom took a long ship ride to join dad in Japan. After two years in Japan, and having my big brother, Brad, they returned to the states to begin their civilian life together. ABOUT SENIOR MOMENT Share a little of yourself with us and get to know each other better. Each month we will publish a photo and brief history of one of our seniors. ! To simplify this for you, we have a few questions for you – and we will take it from there. Now, don’t be shy as we will want to take your photo. See Debbie Terech for details. I asked both my parents (yes, they have remained married all these years), what inventions are they most grateful for as they look back. Their answers were very similar: Refrigerators, running water and indoor bathrooms. When asked what changes have been the least beneficial, my dad said, “Turn our government back to the people.” They agreed that cell phones can be handy; but are not big fans. Dad said, “Debbie, when you were growing up, there was no cell phone for you to call me and tell me you were running late and to plead for mercy. Rules were rules. Remember when I used to set the alarm clock for the time you and your brother were due home, and if that alarm clock went off, well, you remember.” My mother did not want her picture published. I still mind what she says. Bridger Valley Health Fair and blood draws • Biometrics screeners, phlebotomists (must be previously trained to draw blood) !
