Pirates Rugby Club Tamworth The Buccaneer August 2012 This Month The Walsh Report Guess who, don’t sue! Web Site Mystery Pirates What was the error in last Months Buccaneer? Another Waratah! Super coaches Collide! Next month, the finals issue. 2012 2nd XV Pirates Sail Forward—regardless! Pirates 2nd XV wound up their season with a great win over Barraba, perhaps too little too late. The job of the 2nd XV is to back up the 1sts and prepare players for the future rigours of Grade Rugby. A tough season by the boys with changing coaches and line ups each week but this is the woes of every 2nd XV team in every sport. Job well done at Pirates with many young players nearing readiness on their quest for 1st Grade status and others already filling the breach when needed. Lost too many games in weeks when we had 20 + players out in all grades, the 2nd XV battled to the end and narrowly missed the play offs by a lone point. Weeks where other clubs would struggle to get a 1st Grade side on the paddock saw Pirates pull 2nd XV and juniors up to not only play but compete with other much vaunted opposition teams. Not always winning but always making sides play their best to get the points. Disappointing season? Some may say but look at the talent that has been unearthed! The Pirates will continue to sail forward with the attitude and commitment seen in our 2nd XV! Thanks' for the season! Guess who, in his comeback game for 2012? “Support those who support Pirates” In 1989 Bevan Douglas built The Pub with a dormant license transferred from Wagga Wagga where the “Advance Australia” hotel was closed down for site redevelopment. He and his wife, Joan, operated the hotel for many years until daughter, Tierzah, came involved in the family business. Tierzah is the current Licensee of The Pub. Southgate Inn was purchased from the original developer/owners in 1996 and son, Jarod, became Licensee and holds that position today. In 2001 the Douglas family purchased the Family Hotel and son-in-law, Craig Power, managed the property until recently when daughter-in-law, Tanika Douglas, took over the Licensee position. The popular nightspot of the 1980 and 90’s, Dominoes, was purchased in 1988. It neighboured the Family Hotel and on purchase of the Family Hotel, construction took place that joined the two properties and Dominoes is now known as the Honky Tonk Bar function room. In 2006 the Good Companions Hotel was acquired and a major renovation was completed for opening in 2007. In July 2011 the Group purchased the iconic Longyard Hotel. Jarod Douglas and Craig Power oversee the management with Craig holding the current License. This hotel is legendary with country music and the equine industry. Situated on the southern side of the city, right behind the Big Golden Guitar tourist centre, this latest acquisition continues the tradition of a proud family operation that boasts quality and service. Live Stream Overseas Pirate first XV centre Nathan” Fish” Hamlin has played some Rugby League before becoming a Rugby Union convert. Club Secretary Mark Gallienne recently returned to Tamworth after spending a holiday in Phuket, Thailand. He tells that while away he decided to catch up on the Pirates v Narrabri game, logged on and watched, with the help of the local brew, the last 30 minutes of the game. Reception he says was brilliant and even says it attracted a crowd of locals who thought they were watching the Wallabies! Great idea the live feed, anywhere, any time, stay current with Pirates games! By all accounts Fish was an exceptional leaguey and this was proved true when he was named in the Lions Legend team in August. “Hawko” a Waratah Fish was named as a 2nd rower and a “strong all rounder and line runner” Greta work to Pirate Under 16 James “Hawko” Hawkins on his selection in the NSW Under 15 team to play Queensland in October. Send your answer to [email protected] Visit Pirates at -http://www.piratesrfctamworth.org.au/ The Walsh Report Newly appointed cultural attaché to Pirates, Garry Walsh organized an outing to for the senior players to take in a one man show at the Capital Theatre in Tamworth. Garry in his wisdom thought the cultural experience gained by the players would place them in good stead for their future lives. Snake Douglas was made to wear a shirt with sleeves and take off his beanie while Amos Iosa volunteered to translate the show for Welshmen, Dan and Pinchers. Ben Goodman was given three pizzas to consume during the first half of the performance while Bart Leach brought a dictionary. Volume 1, Issue 1 Garret Doughty brought his own chair after being told that the show usually brings a standing ovation and he said that he didn’t want to stand that long., although he wasn’t 100% certain what or how long an ovation was but it sounded long. Quirindi boy Will Saunders had to catch a taxi as he hates driving in the busy part of Tamworth and Dan Wallace had no extra room on his pushbike to give him a lift. All in all a valuable and refined evening was had by all. The talent on show greatly appreciated, as shown by the players standing, cheering and whistling at show end. The cultural appreciation of Pirates has certainly been elevated and attaché Walsh is busily looking for other events to fill the now vast cultural appetite of the players. Garry is looking at booking a bus to Sydney for My Fair Lady or Cats if it returns plus time exploring Oxford Street. Pirates not just a club but a way of life! 1st Grade assistant coach Barry Everingham tried to coach the boys in the etiquette of the theatre before leaving the ground but after Barry spoke most players had to be woken to leave. Pirates Web Site - a world wide hit ! Pirates web site averaging 2.,600 unique hits a month with a spike each Monday after the weekend round of games. Only three clubs (I think) have active Web sites in the Central North Zone and Central North is one of two Zones in Country NSW Rugby that does not have its own website. Hats off to Moree and Tamworth who both are encouraging some interest and fun in Rugby by having active Web sites. You may not agree with what is written but at least they are writing something! being involved and generating interest. If you don’t agree or don’t like it don’t visit their sites! A big job and Pirates have it covered with a number of photographers, writers and bloggers adding to the site. All do it for nothing and without the interest of these people the site would die as has many other CN club sites, some very recently, Moree? “No Culture like Pirate Culture” Although at times having their knuckles rapped, the contributors all have one thing in common, a love of Rugby and Pirates and a desire to see Rugby flourish and have people enjoy Pirates. They all have a sense of fun. World wide web—yes it is. Pirates traffic report issued each month from our service provider shows the origin of our unique hits. Unbelievably Pirates have regular viewers in; Scotland, Ireland, England, South Africa, India, United States, Australia, Italy, Argentina, New Zealand, Canada and Chile. Do they comment—occasionally. For June Pirates had 2,721 unique visits from 31 countries/territories. With 8,714 page visits, spending an average of 3 minutes per visit. The most common comment– “I don’t agree with the article, the web site is biased towards Pirates” Answer—it’s a free web site, not compulsory viewing and you have to look to find it. Don’t like it, don’t visit it, biased ? What do you expect when the site is called Pirates Rugby, der ? Quote of the Month — “This is just like watching the game live. Don’t tell me the score until it finishes” - a long time Pirate, just struggling with the live feed concept, but had a great time anyway! Visit Pirates at -http://www.piratesrfctamworth.org.au/ Page 3 Friday Night Finals Action at Pirates Pirates Barry Everingham coached another Premiership with the Tamworth Public Opens winning a tight tussle over Carinya. Hopefully many future Pirates on display for both teams in a great game of Rugby…………………... Chris Watson -Pirates Supporter, Australia's Number one in ATP Top Achievers Award Go to any Pirates game, look at the second last Corporate box, prick your ears and you will see and hear one of Pirates noisiest and most enthusiastic supporters, Chris Watson. Great news that now Chris owner and operator of Tamworth's Travel world has ben recognised for his enthusiasm, energy and talent. Chris has been a supporter of Pirates over many years, has a Corporate box over this time and can be seen at both home and away games. Chris will miss Pirates next couple of games, a first for him, since he and his wife are off to France on an all expenses paid trip as part of his prize as ATP’s top achiever. If a hand is needed, decorating, organising or just helping, Chris will have his hand up first! If you see or hear Chris at Pirates give a well deserved slap on the back. Chris’s Travelworld was named the number one ATP office in the country. Well done Chris! Don’t forget Chris Watson's partner in crime, Renatta Coutman who is actually Chris’s business partner inTravelworld. Renatta is also a die hard Pirates fan and like Chris can be seen and heard at all Pirate games. She has the same enthusiasm and spirit as Chris, no wonder its such a great team at Travelworld.! Pirates want to acknowledge the dedication of our players who have played 100 or 50 games for us. Its a great effort to turn up each week, year in year out, to play but to continue to achieve this many games! Amazing…………………….. Oh, to be master of all one can see! Late night discussion, a scrum and input from Bingara Rugby legend, Butch Childs may see a pre season trial between two clubs who both think they are master of the waterways.— Pirates and the Gwyder River Rats. Being castaways from the Pirate flotilla on the trip home from Moree, a stopover in the Sportsman’s Hotel, Bingara was recommended to help quench the thirst of the weary Buccaneers. Who were these adventurous travellers who laid plans for 2013? Can’t say but so popular was their presence they returned the next week, on journey home from Inverell, to see the lads again and this time met the Gwyder River Rats team. The idea started as a ripple, then become a river, now a tsunami ! So its on in 2013 , a voyage to Bingara to take on the Rats and compete for the biggest prize of all “Master of the Waterways Upon arrival the travellers made contact with the locals and joined in Suspect 3 the festivities by packing a scrum, pushing the locals through a nearby wall and then attempting to”patch up” the situation by making plans for a Pirate conquest in 2013 of the Gwyder water ways. Anyone seeing the “suspects” don’t drink with them! Suspect 2 Suspect 1 Suspect 4 Locals at the Sportsman’s Hotel with the club mascot, a river rat!
