When soulful singer/songwriter Danny Brooks entered hospital in late July to
undergo heart bypass surgery, the blues, r&b and gospel communities rallied
in support with a series of fund raisers. The second will take place at The Silver
Dollar Room on Tuesday, Aug.24th. The lineup is still in the planning stages with
confirmations from Jack de Keyzer, Danny Marks, Ken Whiteley, and Danny`s
band, The Rockin` Revelators featuring Amoy Levy and John Mays. More artists
will be announced at a later date. All proceeds will go to assist and support Danny
Brooks and enable him to take the necessary time away from performing to make
a full recovery. A minimum donation $20 is being requested or donations can be
sent online and by mail to The Danny Brooks Trust, P.O.Box 61015, Oakville Ont

Kellylee Evans
at the 24th WBR
As always, The Women’s
Blues Revue strives to
introduce new (or new-tobluesfans) talent and this
year is no exception. The
Women’s Blues Revue
Band will be ripping up the
stage with all the usual
suspects but the first
featured vocalist to be
confirmed is someone
who is not a household
name on the blues
circuit, but that will all change after she wins the
hearts of the WBR crowd. Kellylee Evans has
been making a big buzz on the Canadian jazz
scene for the last couple of years but when you
hear her in performance there’s no doubt that she’s
got plenty of blues running through her veins. Her
jazz singing is straight from the heart, rather than
the head, and that is what sets her apart from the
never-ending parade of up and coming female
jazz vocalists and that is precisely why she will
be a great new discovery for blues fans attending
the Women’s Blues Revue.
Her vocals are quite mesmerizing and she
owns the stage with her confidence and charisma.
Her groove has a hint of reggae and pop, all
wrapped up in a very soulful delivery. Now
Kellylee is entering the next phase of her music
career with her sophomore album, The Good
Girl. The alternative-soul pop recording follows
her 2006 critically acclaimed urban-jazz debut,
Fight or Flight, which helped garner the Toronto
native both Juno and Gemini Award nominations
in 2007 and a win for best female artist at the
Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards. The Good Girl
was written and produced by Kellylee at Audio
Valley Recording Studio in Perth, Ontario, with
the help of engineer and co-producer Steve Foley
and her trusted touring band since 2005.
Kelleylee is looking forward to the Women's
Blues Revue. " I've never seen the show but my
best friend's dad always hears it mentioned every
year on the CBC and asks me why I'm not a part
of it. I am happy to finally tell him this is my year."
She adds, "The line up of singers is always stellar
and I've come to really look forward to performing
with other singers. The energy is always intense.
What a treat." Kelleylee cites WBR alumni
Jackie Richardson, Shakura Saidah and Alana
Bridgewater, as "extremely nurturing...they have
each made me want to be a better performer and
singer."
Kellylee has been busy on the summer
festival circuit and will be making an appearance
at Toronto’s First Canadian Place on Thursday,
August 5 and, of course at the Women’s Blues
Revue on November 27th at Massey Hall You can

Blues legend Johnny Winter has just been added to the lineup at this year's Southside Shuffle. He will play the
Memorial Park Main Stage Sunday, September 12th, 2010 at 5:30 pm. If you can't wait 'til September, make your
way to Truro, Nova Scotia for the Dutch Mason Blues Festival on August 13.

Louise writes, “In 2008 and 2009, this
event drew attendees from Ontario, Quebec,
Manitoba, Florida, Tennessee, Massachussetts,
and Pennsylvania. We're humbled by the
popularity of this event and grateful that so many
share our passion for peace and our concern for
the environment. No preaching. No speechifying.
Awesome food... and lots of it. Award Winning
performers. Intelligent conversation. In a magical
environment that we call home. Big old trees.
A lush, rural feel. Breathing is somehow easier
down here on the south coast of Canada. Come
see for yourself.”
Concert for Peace: Michael and Louise

the album at the recent North by Northeast festival
in Toronto. A national tour is being booked now

Zootcase on the Road: Zoe Chilco has been on the blues scene for many
years, as a performer, radio host (‘The Blue Canoe’, on canoefm.com for
seven years) and tireless volunteer at Toronto Blues Society events. She has
released six self-produced collections of original compositions in the traditions
of blues and jazz. They have received wide airplay and acclaim, with songs
chosen as finalist in the UK Songwriting Contest, and as listeners' choices in
Germany and Italy. Zoe led her own band for many years, and now works
with various musicians; she has appeared at events including the Haliburton
Wine and Cuisine Festival, the Haliburton Forest Festival (with Porkbelly
Futures), her five annual 'All That Jazz' shows with Norm Amadio & Jack
McFadden, the Toronto Female Eye Film Festival, The Vital Spark Folk
Society, and at clubs: The Black Swan, Hugh's Room, The Lula Lounge (with
Mammapalooza), The Silver Dollar, and the now-historical Chicago's. Her latest
project is a performance/tribute to an old friend and jazz legend, Zoot Simms,
“Zootcase; the Road Within”, featuring her original jazz tunes, backed by jazz
heavies Norm Amadio, John Deehan and Ron Johnston, will tour Ontario
with performances in Bancroft (Aug. 7), Bala (Aug.11), Huntsville (Aug.18),
Minden (Sept.11) end with a show at the Black Swan in Toronto on Oct. For

laughs or cheap effects. Catherine Major teams
up with guitarist Steve Hill for a version in English
of Willie Dixon’s “I Just Want To Make Love To
You” - again, a pop singer doing an impressive
job. Eric Lapointe chose a Tom Waits song:
“Blue Valentines” is sung in English and I hope
his performance has a life outside this project. Dan
Bigras picked George Thorogood’s “Bad To
The Bone” leading us to a couple of bonus tracks:
Robert Charlebois recorded “Que-Can Blues”
in 1974. He used the blues form to comment on
the status of the francophone identity. The disc
concludes with a rare, live version of “Dimanche
Blues” from the first lineup of the famed group
Offenbach. The prime mover for this project was
Paul DesLauriers, who produced, arranged and
played lead guitar on almost all the songs. I hope
there’s an award for him somewhere down the
line. Outside of a small group of players we all
know, the Quebec music scene is not known as
for its blues but they have obviously been paying
attention. The web site is www.spectramusique.

a liner note that many would kill for – check it out
at www.johnleesanders.com. Sander’s World
Blue Band is superlative and includes ex-pat
Butch Coulter on harp, another Baldry alumnus.
The Baldry link is further strengthened with one of
the finest performances here: “Midnight In New
Orleans” written for Baldry’s It Still Ain’t Easy on
Stony Plain. “(Just me, myself and a) Bucket Full
Of Blues” is one of the better titles around and
it’s as good as it sounds, a tremendous opener. It
doesn’t let up after that until “Blue Eyes Gone”
which slows the pace temporarily – a tuneful
slow blues. “When To Leave” is even slower,
a beautiful soul ballad. “Up To No Good” is
another highlight - the singer is suspicious about
his partner, not an unusual subject perhaps but
seldom so well done. More unusual is “Hello”, a
philandering singer makes a series of phone calls.
Loneliness is also a common subject in blues but
it is not often expressed as bluntly as the acoustic
closer, “Me And Your Pajamas”. If you like New
Orleans funk with a goodly helping of blues, this
one’s for you.
John Lee Sanders Bucket Full Of Blues
PAO
Kevin Marcus Dillon Where I Was Born
Self
Kelowna, BC is now the home of John
Lee Sanders, a music industry veteran who is a
multiple talent on vocals, songwriting, keyboards,
tenor sax & guitar. He lived and worked in the
US for many years, backing such as John Lee
Hooker (Jealous), Tower of Power, Marcia
Ball & many others. More recently he was Long
John Baldry’s bandleader and it was during one
of their many European tours that this connection
to a German record label came about. In addition,
Sanders has some 9 CDs in his solo discography
but news of that treasure trove has been slow to
trickle east. This disc could change that. For much
of that long history Sanders has been in or near
New Orleans and the sub-title here, ‘New Orleans
Deep Fried Funk’ is on the money - you’d think it
was recorded in Treme and not in Austria. None
other than author David Ritz agrees, he’s supplied
Kevin Marcus Dillon is Detroit-raised but a
long-time Muskoka resident. He packs his guitar
and heads for the southern States for about half of
every year. He should be back now and playing
songs from his new CD around here for a while.
He performs as a power trio but with the unusual
addition of a couple of female backup singers.
His years growing up in ‘Hitsville’ have led to
a remarkable facility for incorporating backup
harmonies for his well-written songs. Miss
Brittanny Westcott & Miss Corliss Smith aka
Kemistree are the singers here and they get lots
of work. “Where I Was Born” seems to have been
on the road, with some hard traveling chronicled,
including some time here in the Don Jail – a fine
song. Also notable are the hard times opener,
“Sidewalk Shuffle” and the Elmore-styled “Sweet
Various Artists Nos stars chantent le blues à
Montreal Spectra/Select
A most-appreciated surprise from Quebec: a
blues CD full of artists, most not associated with
blues, who do an excellent job. There are some
obvious covers but some originals, in French and
English, and a template perhaps for some future
projects. The proceeds go to the Montreal Jazz
Festival’s music camp program and the students
join in enthusiastically on the opening “Shake
Your Money Maker”, done in fine Fleetwood
Mac fashion. The main vocalist is Yann Perreau,
and as with all of the vocalists here, he does a
convincing job. You’d think they’d been singing
blues for their entire careers but that obviously is
not the case. Someone who is closer than most
is the Cajun artist Zachary Richard, whose
country blues version of “Midnight Special” is a
treat. “Aline” was apparently one of the first blues
written in French in Quebec, in the ‘60’s. It gets
an impassioned but not overwrought reading from
Patrick Huard. An up & coming young singer is
next with a very fine version of the Irma Thomas
hit, “You Can Have My Husband (But Don’t
Mess With My Man)”. Nadja may well have
had some fun recording this one as her husband
is the keyboard player. Jonas is generating lots of
buzz in Quebec these days and he shows why on
a roaring version of “Who Do You Love”, Frank
Marino takes the lead guitar part with appropriate
nods to Bo Diddley. Plume Latraverse has used
the blues idiom, in French, in the past, although
much of his material seems to be comedic &
satirical - his current release is not blues at all. Here
he contributes a beautiful autobiographical piece
called “Bordeau Beach Blues”. Mario Pelchat

Charlene”. “The Darkest Hour” & “Heatscore”
are two excellent slow blues. “The Old Stone
Row” is a cemetery and the setting allows Dillon
to comment on mortality. “Down To The River”
is a sort of travelogue as well, the river being the
Mississippi. Kemistree really shines on these two,
doing a co-vocal and adding plenty of gospel
flourishes. www.kevinmarcusdillon.com doesn’t
have much gig information but maybe it’ll be
updated.

James Anthony On The Edge Self
Veteran guitarist James Anthony Pecchia’s
new releases are always welcome. Good songs,
well recorded & performed, with a healthy
variety of styles. As on the earlier Room For
Me, Anthony mixes some soul & blues along
with some songs that might get some play on
commercial radio. The cover and the title aim to
draw your attention to the Niagara Escarpment
and Anthony urges you to help protect it against
the constant pressures of development and to
support the Niagara Escarpment Biosphere Fund
at www.escarpmentfund.ca. On to the music:
the CD’s highlight for me is the rocker, “Hound
Dog Blues”, with Anthony on slide & Les Smith
guesting on harp. He stays on slide for “Double
Shot” and you’ll also like the Duane Eddy-styled
& FX-laden instrumental “Hanging Ten”. The
soul numbers open the CD and are given the full
treatment of horns, keyboards & backing vocals.
“Moving In On You” is an excellent song, with
soaring lead guitar. “On The Edge” is also a
funky instrumental done à la Albert Collins. It
should fill the dance floor every time it’s played.
“So Many Years Ago” is another worthy addition,
celebrating a long relationship. All of his songs are
radio friendly in that none of then outstays their
welcome. More artists might use the length of
a 45 rpm disc as a length to shoot for! Anthony
has a regular gig at the Carrington Arms in
Burlington. You can get his CD there or go to
www.jamesanthony.ca.
CKLN-FM (88.1)
"Blue Remedy"
w/ Blues Doctor Julie Hill, Wednesday 8-10pm,
Mike Clark’s new songs almost make
it possible to forget he’s a three-time MBA
nominated tenor sax player. After all, most singer/
songwriters play piano or guitar. After years of
session work and guesting with others, he has
assembled his own band that plays at his own
club, Mikey’s Juke Joint & Eatery, in Calgary.
Brian Pollock is on bass, Thom Moon on drums
and Brian Wright on guitar, although old friend
Amos Garrett often sits in when he’s in town. His
songs cover a range of styles and the disc begins
with a couple of country tunes, the opener being
a tribute to our soldiers who’ve lost their lives in
Afghanistan. It’s called “And Counting” and the
count was 42 when he started writing the song. It
doesn’t have quite the impact of the Gary Kendall
Band’s “This Sacred Ground” but it’s very close.
The blues tunes begin with “Cover Me In Blue”,
one that recalls several incidents he would like
to forget but can’t. He summarizes it in the liner
note by saying “What’s done is done”. Given the
cover art I would have chosen this for the CD’s
title. “Don’t Lose What You Love” is dedicated
to several people close to him who passed away
recently. Up next is a rocker that fairly jumps
out of the speakers, “Drive ‘Er Like I Stole ‘Er”.
Songs like this always had strong sax breaks and
Clark doesn’t drop the ball. “Please Forgive Me”
is written in that 50’s R&B style and says Clark, in
12/8 time. After some bossa nova, we get back in
a rocking groove with “Old Fashioned Girl”. The
blues portion closes off with a fine live off the floor
take on “Spoonful. There are samples available
at www.mikeclarkband.com and when you’re in
Calgary go to Mikey’s, I certainly will.
