GREEN BAY, AUG. 14, 2006
ATLANTA (1-0) at GREEN BAY (0-1)
Sat., Aug. 19 z Lambeau Field z 7 p.m. CDT
THIS WEEK’S NOTABLE STORYLINES:
XGreen Bay plays its first 2006 home game, looking to rebound from a
sub-par preseason opener.
XA pair of former 49ers coordinators — Atlanta’s Jim Mora and Green
Bay’s Mike McCarthy, two of the league’s youngest coaches — face off.
XPackers offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski, who coached in Atlanta
each of the past two seasons (tight ends 2004, offensive line 2005),
faces his former club. Jagodzinski has brought with him the zone-blocking scheme he learned from the Falcons’ Alex Gibbs. With the scheme,
the Packers hope they can enjoy some of the success Jagodzinski and
Gibbs enjoyed in Atlanta, where the Falcons each of the last two years
led the NFL in both rushing yards per game and rushing yards per carry.
XAtlanta makes its first trip to Lambeau Field since shocking Green Bay
with a 27-7 win in the 2002 playoffs, the Packers’ first-ever postseason
loss at home.
XThe Packers play the 57th annual Upper
Midwest Shrine Game, one of the NFL’s oldest
traditions. The Packers have won six of the
last seven Shrine contests, including a 10-7
triumph over San Diego in the 2005 edition.
TELEVISION: The Green Bay Packers Broadcast
Partners will air the game to an eight-station
network throughout the state of Wisconsin and
Upper Michigan, with CBS network production,
personnel and the latest network-quality technology. A top-notch broadcast team that
includes CBS's Kevin Harlan calling the playby-play alongside fellow CBS broadcaster Rich
Gannon providing the analysis. WTMJ's Jessie
Garcia serves as the sideline reporter, WFRV's
Larry McCarren joins the crew for pregame
segments, and Ross Schneiderman (producer) and Suzanne Smith (director) are in the
truck. In addition to WFRV-TV (Green Bay)
and WTMJ-TV (Milwaukee), the game will be
televised over WKOW/ABC, Madison, Wis.;
WAOW/ABC, Wausau/Rhinelander, Wis.;
WXOW/ABC, La Crosse, Wis.; WQOW/ABC, Eau
Claire; WYOW/ABC, Eagle River, Wis.; and WJMN/CBS, Marquette, Mich.
XOut-of-state fans can catch the game live on satellite, using coordinates
IA6, transponder 14 (audio 6268).
XThe contest will re-air on NFL Network Sunday at 7 a.m. CDT, using the
television feed of the Packers’ broadcast in the first half and the Falcons’
broadcast in the second half.
PACKERS RADIO: Milwaukee’s WTMJ (620 AM), airing Green Bay games
since 1929, heads up the 57-station Packers Radio Network, with versatile
Wayne Larrivee (play-by-play) and two-time Packers Pro Bowler Larry
McCarren (color). Spanning five states, the network covers 47 markets in
six states throughout the upper Midwest. The broadcast also is available to
NFL Field Pass subscribers on packers.com.
SECOND PRESEASON GAME
OLDEST FRANCHISE CHARITY GAME:
Saturday marks the 57th annual Upper Midwest
Shrine Game, one of the NFL’s oldest team traditions.
XEach season, the Packers donate a percentage of
the gate to the Shriners’ Hospitals for Children.
XThe Shriners’ facilities provide specialized medical
services, helping children with birth defects and
other injuries, at absolutely no cost.
XTo date, the series has raised about $3 million for
the Midwest Shrine's burn centers and hospitals
for crippled children.
XDesignated proceeds from this week’s contest will
go to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital in Chicago.
The facility specializes in helping children with
orthopedic needs.
XThe Packers are 28-25-3 all-time in the series.
XThe series is so old, three stadiums have hosted
a Shrine game, two of which are no longer standing: Milwaukee’s State Fair Park (1950-51), Milwaukee
County Stadium (1952-82, 1984-94) and Lambeau Field (1983, 1995present).
XIn 1959, Vince Lombardi’s first season as an NFL head coach, the
Packers and George Halas agreed to play in the Shrine game annually;
Green Bay and Chicago played each preseason at County Stadium from
1959-73.
XBecause the charity contest originated in Milwaukee, the Packers annually designate it as the first ‘Gold Package’ game for season-ticket holders primarily from the Milwaukee area. The Packers created the threegame package after moving all games to Green Bay beginning in 1995.

MANUEL PRACTICES:
For the second consecutive Monday, the
Packers saw a key contributor return to practice today. Unrestricted free
agent Marquand Manuel, who had missed the first two-plus weeks of
camp, took part in limited, non-team action this afternoon. The starting
strong safety had been out with a calf strain. One week earlier, RB Ahman
Green (quadriceps) and LB Brady Poppinga (knee) returned to the field
after sustaining season-ending injuries in 2005.

SINCE EISENHOWER WAS IN THE WHITE HOUSE: Lambeau
Field has been sold out on a season-ticket basis since 1960, one year after
Vince Lombardi won NFL Coach of the Year honors in his initial season at
the reins of the Packers.
XThe 324-game streak includes 239 regular-season games, 71 preseason
and 14 postseason.
XWith season-ticket holders from all 50 states, as well as Washington
D.C., Canada, Japan and Australia, the team’s waiting list has more than
71,500 names. People who were recently awarded season tickets put
their names on the waiting list in mid 1970s.
XThe Packers are believed to have the most fans in the league based on
recent Harris polls, merchandise sales and Web site attraction.
XIn addition to the game sellout streak, the team annually sells every
available seat at Lambeau Field for the Packers’ intra-squad scrimmage,
“Family Night.” On Aug. 5, the scrimmage drew a record 62,701.
TALENTED TIGHT ENDS COACHES: Ben McAdoo is the sixth individual in franchise history to exclusively coach tight ends. His four predecessors used the role as a foundation to significant career advancement. A

REMEMBERING 2002: Among the Packers’ first five home contests in
2006 are games against the Falcons, Bears, Saints and Rams. Each of
those opponents also appear on the list of the warmest recorded regularseason home games in Packers history. Included in that group is an 83degree kickoff on opening day, 2002, Michael Vick’s first official assignment as the Falcons’ full-time starting quarterback.
XThe Packers emerged victorious on that scorching September afternoon,
outlasting Atlanta, 37-34, in a high-octane overtime contest. Vick and
the Falcons, however, would avenge the loss four months later, becoming the first opponent to defeat the Packers at home in the playoffs, in a
game that was 52 degrees colder than the teams’ earlier ‘02 meeting.

JET LAG: If any NFL team has an advantage in traveling, it’s the centrally
located Green Bay Packers. Many times, for instance, bus rides from
Soldier Field to O’Hare International Airport take longer than flight time
from Chicago to Green Bay.
XBut in 2006, the schedule makers weren’t kind to the Packers. Green Bay
got a taste of what’s ahead with its first preseason game.
XThe Packers logged 3,500 air miles on their round-trip from Green Bay
to San Diego this past weekend.
XFollowing the game, the team’s Northwest Airlines DC-10 charter
returned to Green Bay with the sun already up, shortly after 6 a.m. CDT
Sunday.
XEach 1,750-mile flight was two hours longer than any plane ride the
team took in 2005.
XIt was the start of a challenging quartet. The Packers in 2006 will embark
on their four longest flights since their memorable win at Oakland on
Monday night, Dec. 22, 2003.

CHRONOLOGY OF A TRADE: Looking back at the timeline of events
that paved Brett Favre’s road from Atlanta to Green Bay:
April 21, 1991 — On Day 1 of the ’91 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles
strike a deal with Green Bay to move up. Eyeing Tennessee T Antone Davis,
the Eagles ship their ’91 first-round choice (19th overall) to Green Bay for
the Packers’ first-rounder (eighth overall). Philadelphia gets Davis, and the
Packers use the Eagles’ No. 19 to snag CB Vinnie Clark from Ohio State.
The Packers’ Tom Braatz and Lindy Infante don’t consummate the trade
until Philadelphia agrees to throw in its first-round pick in the 1992
draft…Later, in Round 2, the Falcons select Brett Favre 33rd overall, breaking the hearts of several teams, including the Jets…Ron Wolf, heading the
Jets personnel department, chooses QB Browning Nagle with the next
choice, 34th.
Nov., 1991 — Braatz is relieved on Nov. 20. One week later, the Packers
hire Wolf and give him full control of Green Bay football operations.
Dec. 1, 1991 — Green Bay’s first game after Wolf’s hiring is a trip to
Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. Before a 35-31 loss, in pregame warmups,
Wolf scouts Favre, the player he missed by one pick in the draft seven
months earlier with the Jets.

Head to Head: (never met)
vs. Opponent: McCarthy 0-0 vs. Falcons; Mora 0-1 vs. Packers
MIKE McCARTHY…Is in his first year as the Packers' 14th head coach.
XWas named Packers head coach on Jan. 12, 2006, his first head coaching job after 13 years as an NFL assistant.
XOne of those previous 13 years was with the Packers, as quarterbacks
coach in 1999.
XSpent the past six seasons as an offensive coordinator for the New
Orleans Saints (2000-04) and San Francisco 49ers (2005).
XHas never been a head coach at any level, having begun his coaching
career as a college assistant at Fort Hays State (1987-88) and the
University of Pittsburgh (1989-92) before breaking into the NFL as a
quality control assistant with the Chiefs in 1993.
JIM MORA…Is in his third year as the Falcons’ 12th head coach.
XSet franchise record in 2004 for the most wins by a first-year head
coach and became the 11th rookie head coach in NFL history to capture a division title. Directed his team to the second NFC championship
game in franchise history, as Atlanta led the NFL in rushing offense
(167 yards per game) and quarterback sacks (48) in ‘04.
XIn 2003, in his fifth season as defensive coordinator of the San
Francisco 49ers, Mora’s unit finished fourth in the NFC in total defense
and ninth in the NFL in rushing defense. San Francisco’s 42 quarterback sacks tied for fourth in the NFL.
XServed as the 49ers’ secondary coach (1997-98) after five years in
New Orleans (1992-96), where the Saints twice led the NFL in fewest
passing yards allowed (1992-93). Spent seven seasons in the
Chargers’ organization as a member of the pro personnel department
(1985) and coaching staff (1986-91).
THE PACKERS-FALCONS SERIES: For a series that began with the
Packers cruising to a 56-3 victory over the then-expansion Falcons in
their first meeting in 1966, it has evolved into a closely contested rivalry.
The Packers hold a modest 12-10 advantage. They’re dead-even in postseason play (1-1).
XOver the last decade-plus, Atlanta-Green Bay clashes have proven
memorable. In 1994, the Packers defeated Atlanta in the final NFL
game in Milwaukee (Dec. 18). Brett Favre's lunging, 9-yard TD scramble on the game's final play sealed the 21-17 victory.
XA scant year later, the Packers and Falcons crossed paths in the postseason for the first time — on Dec. 31, 1995, in Lambeau Field. With
Edgar Bennett rushing for 108 yards, the NFC Central Division champion Packers pulled out a 37-20 victory with the aid of a 76-yard scoring punt return by rookie Antonio Freeman.
XSix years later, Atlanta led all the way in a tight struggle, posting a 2320 victory with the support of a 352-yard passing performance by
Chris Chandler, ending Green Bay’s nine-game home winning streak.
XIn the ‘02 regular season opener (Sept. 8), Favre and Michael Vick
fought into overtime. Favre guided the Packers to four TDs and three
field goals in a 37-34 sudden-death victory. The Falcons, however,
delivered a reverberating, 27-7 win in the ‘02 playoffs (see below).
NOTABLE CONNECTIONS: Falcons college scout Boyd Dowler
played in Green Bay from 1959-69, helping the Packers to five NFL championships and two Super Bowl titles under Vince Lombardi…New
Falcons defensive assistant Joe Lombardi is Vince’s grandson…Ed
Donatell served as Green Bay’s defensive coordinator from 200003…Jeff Jagodzinski, new Packers offensive coordinator, was Atlanta’s
offensive line coach in 2005 and tight ends coach in 2004…Falcons’ senior defensive assistant Emmitt Thomas served as the Packers’ defensive
coordinator in 1999…Allen Rossum served as the Packers’ return man
from 2000-01…Falcons defensive back Leigh Torrence spent the 2005
preseason in Green Bay…The Falcons’ Jason Webster used to cover
Green Bay’s Robert Ferguson at Texas A&M practices…The Falcons’
Jonathan Babineaux and the Packers’ Colin Cole played on the defensive
line together at Iowa in 2002…Green Bay cornerback Ahmad Carroll is an
Atlanta native and resident; he earned All-America honors at Atlanta’s
Frederick Douglass High School…Falcons rookie kicker Tony Yelk is a
Wisconsin native, hailing from Poynette High School.
INDIVIDUALLY VS. ATLANTA: In addition to Samkon Gado’s standout performance in Atlanta last season (see below), defensive tackle Colin
Cole had a career-high five solo tackles in that game…Fellow defensive
tackle Ryan Pickett, while playing for the St. Louis Rams, topped his regular-season high of 12 tackles by getting 13 against Atlanta in the 2003
NFC playoffs (Jan. 15, 2004). Seven of those tackles were solo, tying his
regular-season high…Favre completed 33 passes at Atlanta on Oct. 4,
1992, tied for the second-highest completion total of his career.
LAST MEETING, REGULAR SEASON:
Nov. 13, 2005, Georgia
Dome, Packers won 33-25.
XBeginning a Cinderella rookie season, Samkon Gado made his first
career start on his 23rd birthday and rushed 25 times for 103 yards
and two touchdowns, plus one TD receiving, as the Packers got their
second win of 2005.
XThe Packers’ defense sacked Vick three times and forced him to fumble three times, recovering one. Nick Barnett’s recovery and long return
of a Roddy White fumble in the fourth quarter set up Gado’s third
touchdown. In all, the Packers forced three turnovers, which they
turned into 14 points.
XRyan Longwell made four field goals for Green Bay, including two from
50-plus yards (51, 53).
LAST MEETING, POSTSEASON: Jan. 4, 2003 (2002 NFC Wild Card
playoff), Falcons won, 27-7.
XAtlanta and the gifted Vick swept to a 24-0 halftime lead en route to a
27-7 victory against a Packers team minus Pro Bowl running back
Ahman Green and starting wide receivers Donald Driver and Terry
Glenn, sidelined by injuries.
XVick accounted for 191 yards of offense, completing 13 of 25 passes
for 117 yards and adding 64 rushing yards in 10 attempts.
XIt was the first home playoff loss ever for the Packers, who were the
NFLs' only 8-0 home team in 2002 and had tied for the league's best
record (12-4).
AUG. 14, 2006; ATLANTA at GREEN BAY z Pg. 4
Feb. 10, 1992 — In his second trade as Packers general manager, Wolf
takes the choice acquired in ’91 from Philadelphia (17th overall, the Eagles
were 10-6 in 1991) and sends it to Atlanta for Favre…The Falcons later
traded that 17th pick to Dallas for the Cowboys’ first-round position (19th)
and fourth-round choice (104th) in the same draft; Dallas chose CB Kevin
Smith from Texas A&M with its pick acquired from Atlanta, through Green
Bay; the Falcons chose Favre’s former Southern Mississippi teammate
Tony Smith (RB) at No. 19 and selected CB Frankie Smith from Baylor at
No. 104.
LAST WEEK — AT SAN DIEGO
PACKERS STRUGGLE IN OPENER: This wasn't exactly what Mike
McCarthy had in mind for his debut as an NFL head coach.
XThe Packers struggled in the opening quarter and never fully recovered
Saturday night, dropping a 17-3 decision to the San
Diego Chargers in the 2006 preseason opener.
XGreen Bay had difficulty running the ball, protecting the
quarterback and defending third down, and the result
was rather predictable given those problems.
X"I think we leave here with a sense of reality of how we
started our preseason," McCarthy said. "This isn't about
me, this is about where we are as a football team. We
didn't play the way we're capable of playing. It starts
with me. I have to get them better prepared. We made
a lot of mistakes, a lot of things were self-inflicted."
XMost of those mistakes came in three key areas that will
certainly be focused on as training camp continues:
Running the ball: The debut of the zone-blocking
XR
scheme produced just 44 yards rushing, and nearly half
(21) were by quarterback Aaron Rodgers on scrambles.
The running back quartet of Najeh Davenport, Samkon
Gado, Noah Herron and Arliss Beach combined for 14
carries on just 23 yards. Getting the zone blocking to
feel like second nature likely will continue to be a work
in progress.
X"I never felt a sense of comfort out on the field, and I
think that's really important as far as playing offensive
line," tackle Mark Tauscher said. "You need a comfort
level as far as where you need to get to and how you're
going to get there…There's really no excuses for it. It comes down to
we didn't execute and our tempo wasn't as good as it needed to be.
Coaches have stressed the tempo and we weren't up to par tonight."
Protecting the quarterback: Brett Favre and Rodgers were sacked a comXP
bined five times, mostly by blitzing linebackers. A sack in the red zone
thwarted the Packers' best chance for a touchdown and led to a field
goal.
X"We just need to do a lot better job communicating," said Rodgers, who
absorbed three sacks but otherwise played well, completing 9 of 11
passes — including his first eight on the night — for 124 yards. "We
have to be able to pick up those blitzes. We worked on those in practices."
Defending third down: The Chargers converted 10 of 16 third downs (63
XD
percent), including eight of nine on two drives that lasted 18 plays
apiece and produced 10 points.
X"The majority of those things were mental on those third downs," middle
linebacker Nick Barnett said. "We clean a couple things up and we get off
the field a lot sooner on those 18-play drives…Physically I think we can
play with anybody, if we clean up those mental errors. We have a lot of
young guys and that happens in the preseason. We've got a lot to work
on but I still see a lot of potential in our defense."
XIt was an altogether forgettable night for the Packers' first-string
offense, which forced Favre to stay in longer than originally planned.
XOn its first three possessions, Green Bay picked up just one first down,
and that came on a defensive penalty. The first and third series each
ended 1 yard shy of a first down, while on the second series Favre was
sacked on consecutive plays by blitzing linebackers Stephen Cooper and
Matt Wilhelm for 19 yards in losses.
XFavre and the Packers finally moved the ball on their fourth drive. A 14yard pass to David Martin, a 28-yarder to Robert Ferguson and a 19-yard
pass interference penalty put the ball on the Chargers' 22-yard line. But
the drive stalled when Greg Jennings, just after catching an 8-yard pass
to set up fourth-and-2, dropped a short dump-off over the middle.
X"We've got a long way to go," Favre said. "We weren't very good. We
have to protect better. We have to rush the football better. I don't know
how many yards rushing we had, but it wasn't enough."
XFavre ended up 5 of 10 passing for 66 yards. Two of the incompletions
were dropped, and another was a laser-like throw intended for Donald
Driver in the back of the end zone that sailed just over his outstretched
body.
XThe Packers' first-string defense struggled at the outset but then stiffened. On their opening drive, the Chargers marched 74 yards in just five
plays for a touchdown, as Philip Rivers completed passes to four different receivers and hit Vincent Jackson for a 22-yard score.
XThe worst news for the Packers came two plays earlier, though, when
safety Marviel Underwood went down with what appeared to be a serious right knee injury. Underwood was down for several minutes and had
to be helped from the field by the medical staff.
XTrailing 7-0, the Packers stopped the Chargers on their next two series,
allowing just one first down on each. But the Chargers added to their
lead just before halftime.
XWith Green Bay beginning to substitute on defense and Rivers still in the
game, the Chargers drove 86 yards in 18 plays, holding the ball for 10
minutes, 44 seconds.
XRunning back Michael Turner capped the long possession by going
around right end for a touchdown from 13 yards out to make the score
14-0 with 2:16 left in the half. The Chargers overcame two sacks and
converted five third downs on the drive.
XThe Chargers tacked on three points with another 18-play, clock-consuming drive in the third quarter. This one was 82 yards and took 8:27
off the clock, with Nate Kaeding kicking a 23-yard field goal to make it
17-0 with 2:23 left in the period.
XThe Packers finally got on the board with 12:29 left in the fourth quarter
on a 23-yard field goal by Billy Cundiff. Rodgers hit Jennings on a 47yard bomb to open the drive. A 16-yard strike to Rod Gardner, who made
a nice sliding catch on the sideline, converted a third down and gave the
Packers a first-and-goal. But a 1-yard loss on a first-down run and
another loss on a second-down sack eventually forced the field-goal try.
XIt appeared the Packers might get back into the game after Therrian
Fontenot recovered Dave Rayner's surprise onside kick, and Rodgers
moved the offense down inside the Chargers' 30-yard line. But a deep
fade pass to Marc Boerigter was intercepted by Antonio Cromartie at the
2.
X"We'll get better, not just as a second unit, but as a team," Rodgers said.
"I don't want to say it's OK we lost, because it's not, but we made a lot
of mistakes and we're going to get a lot better. I'm not worried at all, but
there's definitely some improvement that needs to be made."
UNDERWOOD INJURED, CULVER STEPS IN:
With safety
Marquand Manuel having yet to practice in training camp because of a calf
injury, backup Marviel Underwood had been starting in his place and developing well by working extensively with the No. 1 defense. But Underwood's
progression was abruptly halted Saturday night when he left the game on
the Chargers' opening possession with what appeared to be a serious
injury to his right knee.
XHead Coach Mike McCarthy didn't know the extent of the injury and said
more would be learned by Monday. Underwood was seen on crutches
after the game.
XOn a screen pass to tight end Brandon Manumaleuna, Underwood was
the lone defender in the flat and was getting ready to absorb a block
Pg. 5 z ATLANTA at GREEN BAY; AUG. 14, 2006
when he went down awkwardly and did not get up on his own.
XThe play went for 30 yards and helped set up the Chargers' first touchdown. But more importantly the injury is a significant setback for a
Packers' defense that already was missing a starting safety in Manuel
and a reserve in Atari Bigby, who fractured his hand in the Family Night
scrimmage last week.
XUnderwood was replaced by Tyrone Culver, who played solidly and led
the team with nine tackles (eight solo).
X"Hopefully I did well," said Culver, a sixth-round draft choice out of
Fresno State making a homecoming of sorts to southern California for
his unofficial NFL debut. "I know I did what was asked of me. There were
some plays I thought I could have done better. For the first game, I won't
say I'm satisfied because we didn't win, but I'm in a position to keep
working hard."
XHis teammates feel Culver's play will keep the defensive backfield from
suffering despite the injuries.
X"We're stacked at safety," cornerback Ahmad Carroll said. "I love our
safeties. They talk to you, they communicate well. I just have to do my
job and make their job easier. They're doing an excellent job."
INJURY UPDATE — In addition to Underwood, the Packers lost defensive
tackle Kenderick Allen to a side muscle injury in the first quarter and running back Samkon Gado to a groin injury in the third quarter. Defensive
tackle Ryan Pickett (finger) and tight end David Martin (hand) also sustained what appear to be minor injuries.
XDefensive lineman Kenny Peterson, who dropped out of Thursday
night's practice with an ankle injury, did not play.
XAll of the other players who sat out were not expected to play because
of ongoing injuries: running back Ahman Green, receiver Leo Bookman,
cornerbacks Will Blackmon, Patrick Dendy and Mike Hawkins, safeties
Manuel and Bigby, linebackers Brady Poppinga and Kurt Campbell, and
offensive lineman William Whitticker.
PUNTING, ROUND 1 — Jon Ryan had the better punting night in the battle with B.J. Sander for the starting job.
XOn four punts, Ryan averaged 46.3 yards gross and 41.0 net. His long
was a 55-yarder but his best overall punt was his third one, a 51-yarder
that he angled out of bounds for no return.
XSander averaged 36.7 yards on three punts, with a net average of 33.7.
SUCCESSFUL CHALLENGES — McCarthy's first two replay challenges as
an NFL head coach were successful, but it turned out neither victory did
much good.
XOn the first one, Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers hit Vincent Jackson
in the back right corner of the end zone for an apparent 17-yard touchdown pass with 10:44 left in the first quarter, but McCarthy challenged
that Jackson did not get two feet in bounds. Replay showed that

Jackson's second foot hit the boundary line, and the pass was ruled
incomplete. But after a false start on San Diego, Jackson ran the same
go route to the corner on the very next play, and Rivers found him for a
22-yard touchdown, well in bounds this time.
X"The first one was probably a better throw and he still made a good
catch," Rivers said. "Then we regrouped and did the same play and he
made an even better catch."
XIn the fourth quarter, Green Bay receiver Marc Boerigter caught a slant
pass from Aaron Rodgers but had the ball stripped by Antonio
Cromartie, and Marlon McCree returned the fumble 78 yards for a
touchdown.
XReplays showed Boerigter was down before the ball came out, allowing
the Packers to keep the ball. But three plays later, Cromartie intercepted
Rodgers' pass at the 2-yard line to thwart the drive.
XMcCarthy — who had earned a rare third challenge because he was successful on the first two — threw his red flag after the interception as well
and probably was right again. The Packers' television broadcast showed
Cromartie did not have possession of the ball when he slid out of
bounds. But the Chargers' TV broadcast, used by the officials, didn't
have a conclusive angle to overturn the call. Had referee Mike Carey seen
the angle from the Packers’ truck, McCarthy would’ve been believed to
be the first NFL head coach to win three challenges in one game, preseason or regular season.
COMING FULL CIRCLE — McCarthy's first preseason game as an NFL
assistant coach for the Kansas City Chiefs actually came against the
Packers, on Aug. 7, 1993. McCarthy was an offensive quality control assistant for Marty Schottenheimer.
XThe game was played at Milwaukee County Stadium, which was not
known for the most comfortable visitors' accommodations. McCarthy
recalled in the Chiefs' locker room that the only place for him to hang his
clothes was on a nail.
XThe Chiefs won the game, 29-21.
TRAINING CAMP NOTES
THE ‘1-2-1’ FORMAT: The Packers have joined a growing trend of NFL
teams who have shifted to a “1-2-1” training camp practice format.
Traditional "two-a-days" are a thing of the past. In an effort to prepare for
the regular season more efficiently, Green Bay in general is practicing twice
one day and once the next. On days when the team practices twice, the first
session takes place at 9 a.m. and the second at 6:30 p.m., finishing under
the lights. In between, the club breaks down film of the morning practice.
Then, on the following day, the Packers report in the morning to evaluate
the previous night's practice, hit the field at 2 p.m., and return to the film
room that night.
XLen Pasquarelli of ESPN.com surveyed NFL teams and determined that
more than two-thirds of the league employs a similar camp format.
CONGRATULATIONS, REGGIE: The Packers were truly fortunate to
have another former player inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame
Aug. 5 in Canton, Ohio.
XThe team sent a contingent to Canton to celebrate the induction. The
group, consisting of several front-office executives, football operations
staff, Executive Committee members, quarterback Brett Favre and longsnapper Rob Davis, departed Green Bay very early Aug. 5 and arrived in
Canton at approximately 9:30 a.m. EDT. The Packers hosted a private
brunch, where the traveling party was able to spend quality time with
White’s family, including his wife, Sara, and children, Jeremy and
Jecolia. At Sara’s request, just prior to the family’s departure, Favre
posed for a picture with Jeremy. Former general manager Ron Wolf and
several of White’s former teammates, including Sean Jones, Bruce
Wilkerson and Santana Dotson, also were present at the brunch.
AUG. 14, 2006; ATLANTA at GREEN BAY z Pg. 6
XUnfortunately, the contingent needed to depart before Sara’s acceptance
speech because the group felt an obligation to return to Green Bay,
where the team was hosting its annual Family Night intra-squad scrimmage, which again sold every available seat in Lambeau Field. The team
didn’t want to disappoint the 62,701 fans, many of whom were children.
The White family knew the early departure was a possibility.
XThe Packers’ group, which included parts of its medical and equipment
staffs, attempted to stay for as long as it could, and was disappointed it
could not be present for the induction.
XHowever, the Packers felt fortunate that they could have a presence in
both Canton and Green Bay, despite the logistical challenges.
XWhite’s induction comes just three years after James Lofton, now the
Chargers’ receivers coach, entered the Hall of Fame.

THEY’RE NOT OUT TO FINISH .500: Granted, expectations in Green
Bay are the lowest they’ve been since Brett Favre’s first year in a Packers
uniform, 1992. That marked the training camp when the Packers were
coming off their last losing season prior to 2005 — after they finished 412 in 1991.
XBut don’t expect the Packers to accept losing. They didn’t last year with
Favre at quarterback and they won’t this year either, under Mike
McCarthy.
X"In this league,” McCarthy said, “you see big turnarounds happen year
after year. I would not ever be comfortable standing in front of a group
of men and tell them to go 8-8. That's not in my nature, and I don't think
that's the way we approach this business. If we play a certain way,
there's no reason why we can't win a lot of football games."
XArguably the NFL’s most honest quote, Favre said July 31 that this 2006
club has more raw talent than any Packers team he’s ever seen —
including the 1996 squad that won Super Bowl XXXI. That statement
raised eyebrows around the country and even caused several local and
national media to heap some pretty harsh criticism in his direction. For
some reason, those media didn’t listen to everything the quarterback
said, choosing instead to criticize him for only a portion of one sentence
while ignoring the last part of it.
X“I really feel like, as far as talent is concerned,” Favre said, “this is the
most talented team I’ve been a part of as a whole, but the most unproven
and inexperienced team I’ve ever played on.”
XFavre meant no disrespect to former general manager Ron Wolf and the
‘96 team — arguably one of the greatest squads in NFL history. He simply said that the 2006 Packers have more youth and raw athletic ability.
But — and this is the part that many in the media chose not to report —
he also basically said that talent doesn’t mean squat unless a team can
come together, blending its experience and savvy with that athletic ability like that ‘96 team.
THE TRADITION CONTINUES: The Packers are conducting their 61st
organized training camp. In 1946, Curly Lambeau began preseason practices at Rockwood Lodge in northeast Green Bay.
XAffable Scooter McLean spent one year as the Packers’ head coach,
1958, and Green Bay went 1-10-1, the NFL’s worst record (ironically, six
future Hall of Famers were already in place, one year before Vince
Lombardi arrived in 1959).
XMcLean’s legacy, however, lives with the team every summer, because
he started that ill-fated ‘58 season with the team’s first training camp at
St. Norbert College. The private school, in nearby De Pere, Wis., doesn’t
host any on-field activities, but it does serve as the team base for living
arrangements (the Packers use their regular practice, meeting and locker-room facilities on the Lambeau Field campus). The Packers haven’t
dramatically changed their preseason logistics in nearly 50 years.
ROOKIE HEAD COACHES IN ONE DIVISION: The NFC North features three first-time NFL head coaches in 2006: Minnesota’s Brad
Childress, Detroit’s Rod Marinelli and McCarthy.
XAccording to Elias Sports Bureau, over the period since the 1970 league
merger, this marks the first instance that three rookie head coaches have
occupied the same division at the start of a season.
XThe last time there were three rookie head coaches in a division at any
point in a season was 2000, when Dallas’ Dave Campo, Arizona’s Dave
McGinnis and Washington’s Terry Robiskie battled in the NFC East.
NOT YOUR TYPICAL 4-12 TEAM: Last season, the Packers sustained
their first losing record since 1991, snapping the NFL’s longest streak of
.500-or-better seasons. But looking beyond the record:
XThe Packers sustained five losses by three points or less, most in the
league ahead of San Diego and Atlanta (four each).
XThe Packers outgained opponents in 12 of their 16 games, and entered
the season’s final month having actually scored more points than opponents. For most of the year, the Packers could
hang their hat on the fact that no team had
blown them out, and that they had a legitimate
opportunity to win every game, including a
17-3 loss at Detroit, Sept. 11, when a penalty
nullified Javon Walker’s potential game-turning 55-yard reception. The 2005 Packers also
were the first team in NFL history to:
XScore more points than opponents through
11 games with no more than two wins (Green
Bay opened 2-9 but outscored the other team
232-223) and…
XScore as many points as opponents through 13 games with no more
than three wins; the Packers were 3-10 but had matched opponents in
scoring, 255-255.
XPlus, on only four occasions — Sept. 11 at Detroit, Sept. 25 vs. Tampa
Bay, Nov. 21 vs. Minnesota and Dec. 19 at Baltimore — opponents put
up more total offense than the Packers.
XGreen Bay’s 2005 slate included both Super Bowl finalists (Pittsburgh
and Seattle), half of the eight division champions (Seattle, Cincinnati,
Chicago and Tampa Bay), and five playoff teams (Cincinnati, Chicago,
Tampa Bay, Carolina and Seattle).
XThe Packers also faced each of the NFL’s top five defenses (Tampa Bay,
Chicago, Carolina, Pittsburgh and Baltimore, in order of final ranking).
XAll told, the cumulative record of Green Bay’s 2005 opponents was 136120-0 (.531), the toughest schedule in the Brett Favre era (1992-2005).
XAnd, according to Elias Sports Bureau, among teams that finished with
four or fewer wins in NFL annals, the Packers were among the top allaround teams on paper:

…AND TO THAT 4-12 TEAM: Green Bay made several personnel
moves, notably:
XAdding five unrestricted free agents, most signed by a Packers team
since before the 1998 season.
XUpgrading the league’s No. 7 defense (No. 1 against the pass), Green
Bay brought in unrestricted free agents Marquand Manuel, Seattle’s
starting safety in Super Bowl XL, DT Ryan Pickett, who led all NFL
defensive linemen with 115 tackles last year, and CB Charles Woodson,
a four-time Pro Bowler and potential two-way threat. Plus, the Packers
re-signed potential unrestricted free agent Aaron Kampman, who
enjoyed his best career season in 2005.
