Audubon Society offering fall introduction to birding classes
Music Man & Co. a mainstay at Gulf Shores Legion for 10 years
Music Man & Company, is such a musical mainstay at American Legion Post 44 in Gulf Shores that Roger Beasley, the man behind the
band, and his wife Elaine keep an RV at a park in Foley while they
travel back and forth to South Baldwin from their Evergreen home.
“Roger and Elaine have stayed with Post 44 through good times and
bad,’’ said Post 44’s Sherry Douglas. “They are loved by the locals and
the snowbirds. He is a great singer, but also he plays the drums.’’
Music Man & Company plays at the Legion (6781 Hwy. 59, 251-9486119) every Friday night at 7 p.m. and every Sunday at 5 p.m.
“Post 44 has been blessed with their music for so many years. They
are known for closing on Sunday nights with a patriotic song,’’ Douglas added. “Everyone stands in a circle and each member holds a
flag. It is an awesome thing to see.’’
Roger’s 40 year career as a musician started in his native Muscle
Shoals. He was “sneaking off ” to Tennessee to play drums in clubs
with his uncle when he was 13 years old. That was the start of a professional career that took him to Nashville for session work and
throughout the Southeast playing in bands with headliners or leading his own bands.
Roger said he can count at least 50 family members on his mother’s
side who play music, and Frank Baker of Two of Hearts (another
band that plays at Post 44) is a first cousin on his father’s side.
“Playing music has always been a natural thing for me to do,’’ Roger
said. “Everybody in my family plays.’’
Roger and Elaine’s sets at the Legion are eclectic to say the least. He
might play anything from the big band music that ruled the 1940’s to
country, pop and rock hits from the past seven decades. He also
sneaks an original tune into most sets.
“People seem to like them,’’ he said. “They are surprised when I tell
them it’s one of my songs. But I basically play everything but rap. I
especially like the ‘70’s. That was a good time for music. We also do a
lot of line dancing. My wife gets up and does it with them.’’
Roger also puts on a first rate Elvis show a few times a year at the
Legion, including a show planned on Sept. 18 (see story below).

K. of C. Million Dollar Shootout Sept. 16
Craft Farms host for 3rd annual Catholic school fundraiser
Langstons will compete in World Martial Arts Games
Gulf Shores father & son hope to bring home gold from South Africa
Surely the trip that Tim Langston and his 11 year old son, Alex,
will take next month to Johannesburg, South Africa will be one
they will remember for the rest of their lives.
The Gulf Shores residents will take pictures and maybe even
see lions and zebras. But they are not going as tourists. They will
both be competing for the United States Martial Art's Team at
the Oct 10-18 World Martial Arts Games.
Alex, a 6th grader at Gulf Shores Elementary, will compete in
five divisions and his dad, who finished
second overall in the U.S. Championships
in Atlanta earlier this year, will compete in
as many as eight divisions.
Although Tim has trained and competed
in martial arts since he was 16, he took a
break until he started training again
around four years ago. The Langstons currently train daily in three different martial arts disciplines (Jiujutsu, & karate)
with Chris Wheeles at Wheeles Yoshukai Karate Academy in Gulf
Shores, Mark Barlow at the Gulf Coast Martial Arts Academy,
Sensei Ricky Curruth (yes, the same guy with all the real estate
listings) in Gulf Shores and Sean Applegate of 10th Planet Jiu
Jitsu in Gulf Shores.
“We are up to our earns in it (training),’’ Tim said. “I kind of
dragged Alex into it at the beginning, but now that he’s gotten a
feel for winning, he loves it.’’
The Langstons qualified for the World Championships through
high national rankings earned in fighting competitions.
“This will be the first time I’ve competed ever outside of the
country, but I am going over there with business to take care of,’’
Tim said. “There will be people from all over the world there. But
we are going over to kick butt and take names. We want to bring
medals back to Gulf Shores.’’
To help with the $4,500 cost for the trip, Tim Langston has
started a gofundme site (gulfshores-teamusa). Friends have also
put together a raffle for a high end smoker and other prizes, with
the drawing scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the going away party on
Saturday, Oct. 8 at The Cove in Gulf Shores. Raffle tickets are
available at The Cove (131 Cove Ave., Gulf Shores), Wheeles
Yoshukai Karate Academy (314 E 21st Ave, Gulf Shores), Gulf
Coast Martial Arts Academy (313 W Laurel Ave., Foley) or by calling Tim at 251-233-2446.
The 3rd Annual Knights of Columbus Million Dollar Shootout
Golf Tournament & Helicopter Golf Ball Drop will be held on Friday, September 16 at 9 a.m. at Craft Farms Golf Club in Gulf
Shores. The $125 entry fee per golfer for the 4-person scramble includes lunch after golf and a chance to win the $1 million hole in
one prize and a 2nd hole in one prize of a trip for two to Hawaii.
The Million Dollar Shootout is a two-part contest, with hole #8
on the Cypress Bend course the qualifying hole. The ten closest to
the pin shots on that hole during the day’s round will qualify for
the shootout. Those ten, then after the completion of play and
lunch, will go to a temporary teeing area in the fairway of Cotton
Creek side # 18 and hit into that green. The green is nearest the
clubhouse and will allow easy access for spectators. The shot will
be 168 yards. Each golfer will get one shot for the $1 million.
In addition to the chance to become a millionaire, the K of C
will present the winning team a 3 day/2 night golf trip to the
World Golf Village in St. Augustine. The package includes lodging,
one round of golf at each of the two golf courses and tickets to the
Golf Hall of Fame.
Helicopter ball drop tickets are $10 each. Each ticket number
will correspond with a golf ball number. The owner of the ticket
matching the ball that is closest to the pin will win $1,000. Second place is worth $500. All proceeds will benefit St. Benedict and
St. Patrick Catholic Schools. For more info or to register, call 205999-5802 or email [email protected].
Songs That Save Sept. 29 at Pelican Place
All donations to go directly to Secret Meals Baldwin Chapter
Musicians from all over the Gulf Coast will come together in the
courtyard stage at Pelican Place on Hwy. 59 in Gulf Shores for
the Sept. 29 Songs that Save Concert to raise money for Secret
Meals-South Alabama chapter. The entire $20 cover charge (cash
and checks made to Secret Meals) will be presented to the event’s
charity.
Although the schedule is not exact and musicians will be guesting with each other, the tentative schedule includes Mel Knapp,
Shelby Brown and Nick Peraino from 5-6 p.m., and Beverly Jo
Scott, Jon Cook and Kristen Long from 6-7 p.m. Danni Coyote,
John Hart and Destiny Brown will play from 7-8 p.m., and John
Joiner, Eric Erdman and Melissa Joiner will close out the evening
from 8-9 p.m. The MC for the evening is Nick Biebricher and the
guest artist is photographer Michelle Stancil. Event soundman
Denver Hawsey is also scheduled to play during the final set.
Alabama Credit Union developed theSecret Meals For Hungry
ChildrenSM program through partnerships with local food banks
with the objective to address the issue of hunger facing our elementary schoolchildren.
Secret Meals fills the weekend gap that some children experience during the school year with vitamin-fortified and nutritional
meals that are discretely slipped into the backpacks of as many
hungry children as donations allow. The cost to ensure one child
receives a food pack each Friday throughout the school year is
$140 and Secret Meals expects to provide over 2,500 children with
food packs this school year.
Currently, over twenty percent of Alabama’s children live below
the poverty line; many of these children rely heavily on free and
reduced breakfasts and lunches five days a week. However, the
weekends create a nutritional gap leaving many children hungry
when they return to school on Monday.

A diverse group of vendors will offer crystals, hand crafted jewelry and artisan crafts. Holistic practitioners such as massage
therapists, reiki masters and aromatherapists will also share
their gifts and talents.
Even though this is a ten-day event, participants can customize
their experience from one class, one day, to the entire event.

Locals can participate in Oct. 22
underwater conservation effort
On Saturday, October 22, local divers will join
scuba divers from across the country as participants in Project AWARE’s Dive Against Debris.
The local underwater conservation effort is cosponsored by the City of Gulf Shores. Volunteer
divers will canvas the near shore waters of the
Gulf in an effort to remove garbage and unnatural debris which can pose a significant threat
to people and wildlife. Headquarter operations
will be located at Gulf Place Public Beach. All
volunteers will report to headquarters for
check-in and assignments at 7 a.m.
The cleanup site spans approximately 2.5
miles and runs from the 1200 block of West
Beach to the 500 block of East Beach (Fire Department to Gulf State Park).
Divers may pre-register for the event. Minors
under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a
parent or guardian who is open water scuba
certified. There is no cost associated with participating. A liability waiver must be completed
by all volunteers.
Project AWARE is a growing movement of
scuba divers protecting the ocean – one dive at
a time. Focusing on marine debris, scuba divers
can directly and positively affect real, long-term
change in our community. For more info, contact

Volunteers needed for Sept. 17 Al. Coastal Clean-up
Show your support and concern for Alabama's waterways by participating in the 29th Annual Alabama
Coastal Cleanup scheduled for Saturday, September
17 from 8 a.m. until noon. Make a difference by volunteering to clean up the state’s cherished coastal area.
In the past 28 years, more than 83,000 volunteers
have removed more than 1.5 million pounds of trash
from Alabama's valued coastline and waterways.
The event gives Baldwin residents the opportunity
to give back to the environment and their surrounding
communities by cleaning up along the coast and waterways and within their cities. Call 251-928-9792 or
visit AlabamaCoastalCleanup.com for more info about
the clean-up zones.
Volunteers—involved citizens, community organizations, businesses, individuals, school groups and families—are needed to help with the cleanup.
Participants can find a cleanup zone near them at AlabamaCoastalCleanup.com. All supplies are provided,
and volunteers who come out early will receive a free
t-shirt.
The Alabama Coastal Cleanup is part of an international effort led by the Ocean Conservancy to remove
debris from coastal waters. This litter is not only an
eyesore but can pose a real threat to both marine
wildlife and humans.
Participation provides a unique opportunity to be a
part of the solution. Alabama joined this effort in
1987. Items removed from Baldwin beacahes have included enough ruined furniture, home appliances,
computers and laptops to completely equip a house or
office.
To volunteer at a specific zone, call or email the captains listed below or just show up before noon at the
listed zones.

Dr. Zarr’s Amazing Funk Monster, Tracy
Lawrence and The Tip Tops will be featured
musical acts during the 45th Annual National

a.m. each day and runs through 10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 5 p.m. on Sunday.
In addition to 300 vendors offering fine art,
arts & crafts, the fest features a retail marketplace, outdoor village, children’s activity village, sand castle contest and a 10K/5K run. The
best of the best youth talent from Baldwin
County will compete in the Shrimp Festival

400 cyclists will ride toward a world free of MS
Hundreds of cyclists are hoping to raise $215,000 to
stop MS in its tracks, restore what has been lost and
end MS forever at Bike MS: Tour de Beach Sept. 1718. Each morning, cyclists will start from Orange
Beach and ride 25, 45 or 75 miles. All routes are well
supported with fully-stocked rest stops every 10-12
miles and safety provided by medical personnel, HAM
radio operators, law enforcement and motorcycle escorts. Rides will begin and end at the Hampton Inn
and Suites in Orange Beach. Visit bikeMS.org, call
205-451-7475 or email [email protected] to register.
“With rest stops at landmarks like Mullet Point Park
and historic Fort Morgan, Tour de Beach truly takes
advantage of all this wonderful community has to
offer,” said Jennifer Ely, Director of Development and
Bike MS Manager.
The weekend-long celebration begins Friday evening
with the Waterfront Welcome Party at the ride’s host
hotel, The Hampton Inn. Cyclists are invited to pick
up their packet and enjoy cocktails on the beach. After
the ride, riders and volunteers can relax beachfront
in the Bike MS lounge with massages and lunch. Saturday night, cyclists and their families will enjoy Tour
de Beach’s signature Seafood Feast catered by Lulu’s,
Wintzell’s Oyster House and Doc’s Seafood Shack.
“Bike MS: Tour De Beach is perfect for cyclists of all
levels. It gives cyclists and volunteers a way to support an important cause while having a great time,”
Ely said.
Bike MS, hosted by the National Multiple Sclerosis
Society, is the premier fundraising cycling series in
the U.S. for anyone seeking a personal challenge and
a world free of multiple sclerosis. All participants have
access to bike mechanics, support vehicles, rest stops,
a finish line celebration and much more.
Nearly 100,000 cyclists participate in Bike MS across
the United States each year, riding in more than 85
Bike MS rides. With route options to fit any experience level, anyone anywhere can accept the challenge
and fuel progress to help create a world free of MS.
The largest fundraising cycling series in the country,
Bike MS includes people living with MS, their friends,
families and neighbors, as well as corporate teams
and individuals who are driven to support critical research and life-changing services to help people with
MS live their best lives. People living with MS can
also participate in “I Ride with MS,” a special program
recognizing Bike MS cyclists living with the disease.
Proceeds raised will support cutting-edge MS research, and life-changing services for people living
with MS so they can live their best lives.

a short biography with human interest stories about life, relationships, and religion. Having experienced relationship adversity, Linda said she felt compelled to share her story.
In The Relationship Dance, the author illustrates how God joins
people to dance in unity despite religious differences. The book contains eye-opening interviews
and inspirational stories from various walks of
life. The Kindle Edition is available on
amazon.com for $2.99, and the paperback is available through the author: email [email protected].
Linda Ray Center (pictured left) is a local author,
poet, and passionate speaker at churches,
women's retreats, and conferences. After thirty-two years in a career in dance education in her native Dalton, Georgia, Linda and
her husband, Bill, retired to the Alabama Gulf Coast twelve years
ago. They have lived in Gulf Shores for all of those years. Linda
is very active in Worship on the Water, the non-denominational
ministry headquartered at the Flora-Bama Lounge. “Yes, I love
my church,’’ she said. “Remember, Worship on the Water is a nonjudgment zone.’’ For more info, visit therelationshipdance.com.

BLOODY MARY RUN: Bloody Mary Run organizer Mike Pate of Harley Sports had the best line of the day: “If you get lost you are in trouble,’’ he said to the 420 participants in the Sept. 3 5K
& Fun Walk that went out and back along West Canal Rd. from sponsoring Tacky Jacks Gulf Shores. A two hour rain storm lifted nicely right around race time, and Lisa Christian played music
while everybody ate watermelon & Mexican, drank beer or bloody marys following the race along the Intracoastal. Locally, Pate also organizes The Shark Run at the Flora-Bama and the Zydeco Fest Run at the same TackyJacks location.

Duncan, Director of the Senior Center; Terry Simpson, Streets, Parks and Landscaping Foreman, for the City of Robertsdale; Jimmie Lou Ramey, President of the
Robertsdale Garden Club; and Ken Ramey and Mary Ann Lindsay to discuss various drainage problems which need to be resolved prior to proceeding with landscaping recommendations. Terry Simpson advised the group that a terrace on the

Ken met with Jeff Kelley of the South Baldwin Center for Technology regarding obtaining the plants recommended by Sims. An order for the plants will be submitted

TOPPING OFF CEREMONY AT VISTA DEL MAR:
Developers celebrated a milestone on Sept. 9, with a topping
out ceremony for the first major construction project to be completed on Perdido Key in more than a decade. Vista Del Mar is
a $60-million luxury condominium complex being built adjacent to Gulf Islands National Seashore. Once complete, the
nine-story tower will boast top-notch amenities and unobstructed views of the park — two reasons why pre-sales for the
six-figure residences have been so brisk, developers say. Curt
Boisfontaine, of Dallas-based Meridian Realty Advisors, said
53 of the 64 units had already been sold. Meridian is partnering with Destin-based JGM Development to build the project,
and Boisfontaine himself will be moving into one of the units
once construction is complete.
“Vista Del Mar is located on an irreplaceable piece of beachfront,” Boisfontaine said this week. “The views are simply unmatched — I can’t wait to live there myself.” A previous condo
tower by the same name stood on the site of Vista Del Mar for
decades before Hurricane Ivan destroyed it in 2004. Boisfontaine wanted to rebuild in 2006, but his attempts to do so
were hampered — first by a recession and then by the 2010
Gulf Oil Spill. When workers finally completed structural work
on the tower last month, it was the culmination of a decade of
waiting. Boisfontaine said this month’s ceremony — an ancient
builders’ tradition with roots in Nordic culture — was as much
a sigh of relief as a construction milestone.
“It’s taken us 10 years,” he said, “but I believe we’ve given our
buyers a tremendous value.” With the bones of the tower now
in place, work can commence on the exterior of the building and
the interior finishes. The architect for the project is Forrest
Daniel, of Daphne, and the general contractor is Yates Con-
Louis Bird;
Beverly Bird;
Dr. Beth Taylor
struction, which has built numerous other condominiums along
the Gulf Coast. Boisfontaine said work on Vista Del Mar should
be totally complete in the second quarter of 2017, though he expected the remaining nine units to be sold well ahead of that
date. The condos, with interiors designed by Dallas-based Wilson Associates, range from 2,000 to 3,300 square feet in size
and are priced between $785,000 and $1.65 million. For more

GRANT WILL HELP START FFA PROJECT AT
FOLEY HIGH: The South Baldwin Chamber Foundation
awarded Dr. Beth Taylor of Foley High School a teacher student grant in the amount of $7,000 to begin a Future Farmers
of America project that will include a community garden. The
funds will afford the program a fence to enclose the garden and
is the first step towards making the program a reality. Dr. Taylor says the garden will consist of seasonal vegetables and flowers for cutting. Taylor is in her fourth year at Foley High School
where she teaches Animal Science, Poultry Science, Veterinary
Science and serves as the high school’s FFA advisor. A Foley
High grad herself, she earned her B.S. and D.V.M. in veterinary
medicine at Auburn.
“I have been teaching at Foley High School since 2013. I love
the veterinary field and enjoy leading my students to do great
things in the world of agriculture,’’ she said.
The addition of the community farm will be not only a tool for
project based learning at the high school, it will also engage the
students in the community.
“The posts are going up and we are making progress! We are
grateful to the Chamber Foundation and the City of Foley for
this awesome opportunity to give hands-on experience to our
students and to serve our local community,” Taylor said.
Eden condo owners and Wounded War Heroes provide Perdido vacations for veterans
When a roadside bomb tore through two muscles in Ret. 1st
Sgt. Gary Powell’s shoulder in 2004, he could have left Iraq and
taken a vacation, but he didn’t.
“I didn’t report it,” Powell said in September from his Deridder, Louisiana home. “I didn’t want to get sent
away from my soldiers.”
Instead, Powell served a full year in Iraq and
waited seven more, until after he had retired,
to go in for surgery. He retired in 2010 and
bought a five-acre piece of land in Derrider, a
city of 10,000 located an hour north of Lake
Charles, Louisiana.
In 2014, Powell finally got the vacation he deserved when he was one of about two dozen
wounded veterans selected to receive a free,
week-long retreat hosted by Eden Condominiums in Perdido Key.
The event, which will return to the beach for
a third year Sept. 17-24, started when a condo
owner at Eden offered his unit to a wounded
veteran to thank him for his service. Word of
the gesture spread, and, soon, other owners
were offering to do the same. The retreat has
grown every year since.
“The Perdido Area is best known for its
beaches,” April Adams, Eden’s rental manager,
said, “but we’re a military town through and
through. These folks gave everything so we
could have the freedom to enjoy our little slice
of Paradise. This is just our way of giving back
to them a small piece of what they’ve given us.”
Powell, who was referred to Eden by the nonprofit Wounded
War Heroes, attended the retreat for a second time in 2015. He
won’t be traveling to Perdido Key for this year’s retreat, but
said the experience of the first two years had meant a lot to
him. “When I got injured and bullets were being shot at me, I
found myself asking what I was doing in Iraq,” he said.
“Through the help of the Wounded War Heroes program, I’ve
come to see what I was fighting for. I found out that I was fighting for the small, hometown folks of America, you know, not the
politicians and all the other folks, because,
since I’ve been in the program, I’ve seen a lot
of people showing their appreciation.”
During the retreat, local businesses rolled out
the welcome mats for Powell and his fellow
veterans — donating meals, jet skis and even
manicures.
Eden treated the veterans and their spouses
to a free day at their in-house spa during their
stay, and Powell — a 30-year Army veteran —
had his nails done.
“I got into it,” Powell laughed. “I got into it,
man.”
Powell said the time spent with other veterans and the picturesque surroundings were
among the highlights of the trip.
“I had never been to Florida,” he said, “and I
just fell in love with it. I was trying to talk the
wife into moving, but she won’t have no part
of it.”
Still, Powell hopes to return soon.
“I keep a bug out bag, just in case,” he said. “I
could be gone within 30 minutes.”
Eden is still looking for partners to help make
the event as memorable for this year’s attendees as it was for Powell. Thomas said Eden
was also accepting donations of household
goods so the veterans’ condos would be well-stocked during
their stay. Those wishing to help can call Eden at 850-492-336
or send an email to [email protected].

Buzz Valadao adds his own
dishes to old Point favorites
Buzz Valadao’s culinary style reflects his background in Portuguese & Italian dishes that were
weaned in restaurants in his native New England.
But his local roots run deep as
well. And he earned his well deserved chops building businesses
at The Outrigger in Orange Beach
and Ryan’s Catch on Grande Lagoon that also included finessing a
loyal and local happy hour crowd
at those pre-Ivan bistros.
Buzz, who was also at Trigger’s
for 10 years before recently taking
over at The Point Restaurant on
Innerarity, also has Rusty’s Fish
Camp on a local resume that now
stretches 28 years.
He said he won’t mess with The
Point’s staples. Just as The Ivys
did back when they opened in
1955, The Point will serve fried
mullet. The gumbo recipe is also
well tested and remains. But Buzz
will add his renowned cajun & creole influenced sauces, his popular
fried cheesecake and his own take
on fresh fish specials. His regulars
insist that he still put his mac &
cheese on the menu.
Going into month four at The
Point, Buzz says he is having fun,
especially with the restaurant’s
new emphasis on music. In addition to the good old bluegrass tradition that is Bubba & Them on
weekends, Smokin’ Elvis has been
playing Sunday afternoons and
Sam Glass leads a jam Sunday
evenings at 7 p.m. The Ole River
String Band plays on Thursday
nights, and Sandy Roots produces
a monthly concert series in the
courtyard.
“We want the place to be an asset
to the community like it’s always
been,’’ Buzz said. “Both the management and the owners think it’s
important to give back to the community as much as it has given us.
“Hopefully, we will continue to
make great food, have a lot of fun
and make some money while we’re
doing it,’’ he added.

The 3rd Annual Miss Coastal Alabama Pageant and the Miss
Coastal Alabama Outstanding Teen Pageant will be held on Sunday, September 25 at 2 p.m. at Faulkner State University in Bay
Minette. The pageant is a preliminary competition for both Teens
and Misses of the Miss America Scholarship Program.
The 10 Miss Coastal Alabama contestants (ages 17-24) will compete in interview, evening gown, swimsuit and talent competitions. The five Miss Coastal Alabama Teen contestants (13-17)
will compete in interview, evening gown, fitness and talent.
“We are thrilled with the girls. They are working hard and we
have a fun program,’’ said pageant director Karla Hardin. “Our
choreographer always comes up with a fun routine that reflects
where we live on the Gulf Coast.’’
Karlin said the current Miss Coastal Alabama, Bailey Kennon
of Orange Beach, and Miss Coastal Alabama Outstanding Teen,
Lauren Kent of Mobile, will be at the pageant to perform, speak
and crown the new winners.
“I’ve loved seeing them grow over the past year,’’ Hardin said.
“And Bailey did such a great job bringing awareness to the program down on the Coast. She will tell you herself how she’s grown
from her participation in the program.
“It’s a great pageant for first time competitors because we are
new here on the Coast,’’ Hardin added. “I’m always anxious myself to see whom I am going to be working with for the next year.’’

Foley High’s Lydia Williams
is Troy’s official photograper
Before Lydia V. Williams graduated
from Foley High School in 2014, she
started her own photography business. Her interest in photography
first sparked by taking pictures of
herself. Her junior year, she enrolled
in a class that teaches students how
to run their own business. She chose
photography as her specialty and
Diaography was born. From there, her
business grew to cover college events,
graduation, weddings, pageants, maternity and engagement shoots. But
she did not stop there.
Lydia went on to Faulkner State
Community College and was awarded
a full scholarship for her photography
work. After being accepted to Troy
University this fall, she submitted her
portfolio and applied for the position
as official photographer for the university. She got the job. Her duties at
Troy include all official events, organization and club pictures. She is working toward a full tuition scholarship
for the remainder of her time at Troy
and has purchased a full frame camera to increase her business.
“I'm just really thankful that I was a
part of the Young Entrepreneur Academy in high school,’’ she said. I encourage anyone who has a business
mindset or wants to start their own
business to join the program. It has
changed my life in so many ways.’’

30TH ANNUAL OPTIMIST CLUB OF PERDIDO BAY MULLET FEST
The 30th Annual Mullet Festival hosted by the Optimist Club
of Perdido Bay was held on Labor Day at the Lillian Community Club s a way for the Optimists to raise funds for a variety
of programs and projects for children of the area. The annual
event included a presentation of the colors by the American
Legion, a 5K Run/Walk, a pancake breakfast, mullet/catfish
dinner, inflatables, the famous Mullet Toss, a silent auction,
arts and crafts, a raffle and music from Big Jake & the Tag-ALongs, a favorite in the area, especially for their line dance
music and the famous chicken dance. In addition to providing
projects and programs for kids, the Optimist Club of Perdido
Bay hosts programs honoring Elberta school teachers and
Baldwin County law enforcement officers. Last year $25,000
was donated to local organizations and approximately 10,000
hours were expended by club members to help children.
