He is a great singer, but also he plays the drums.’’ Music Man & Company plays at the Legion (6781 Hwy. 59, 251-9486119) every Friday night at 7 p.m. and every Sunday at 5 p.m. “Post 44 has been blessed with their music for so many years. They are known for closing on Sunday nights with a patriotic song,’’ Douglas added. “Everyone stands in a circle and each member holds a flag. It is an awesome thing to see.’’ Roger’s 40 year career as a musician started in his native Muscle Shoals. He was “sneaking off ” to Tennessee to play drums in clubs with his uncle when he was 13 years old. That was the start of a professional career that took him to Nashville for session work and throughout the Southeast playing in bands with headliners or leading his own bands. Roger said he can count at least 50 family members on his mother’s side who play music, and Frank Baker of Two of Hearts (another band that plays at Post 44) is a first cousin on his father’s side. “Playing music has always been a natural thing for me to do,’’ Roger said. “Everybody in my family plays.’’ Roger and Elaine’s sets at the Legion are eclectic to say the least. He might play anything from the big band music that ruled the 1940’s to country, pop and rock hits from the past seven decades. He also sneaks an original tune into most sets. “People seem to like them,’’ he said. “They are surprised when I tell them it’s one of my songs. But I basically play everything but rap. I especially like the ‘70’s. That was a good time for music. We also do a lot of line dancing. My wife gets up and does it with them.’’ Roger also puts on a first rate Elvis show a few times a year at the Legion, including a show planned on Sept. 18 (see story below). Pictured Above: Elaine and Roger Beasley of Music Man & Company. Alabama Credit Union developed theSecret Meals For Hungry ChildrenSM program through partnerships with local food banks with the objective to address the issue of hunger facing our elementary schoolchildren. Secret Meals fills the weekend gap that some children experience during the school year with vitamin-fortified and nutritional meals that are discretely slipped into the backpacks of as many hungry children as donations allow. The cost to ensure one child receives a food pack each Friday throughout the school year is $140 and Secret Meals expects to provide over 2,500 children with food packs this school year. Currently, over twenty percent of Alabama’s children live below the poverty line; many of these children rely heavily on free and reduced breakfasts and lunches five days a week. However, the weekends create a nutritional gap leaving many children hungry when they return to school on Monday. Coastal Clean-up Show your support and concern for Alabama's waterways by participating in the 29th Annual Alabama Coastal Cleanup scheduled for Saturday, September 17 from 8 a.m. until noon. Make a difference by volunteering to clean up the state’s cherished coastal area. In the past 28 years, more than 83,000 volunteers have removed more than 1.5 million pounds of trash from Alabama's valued coastline and waterways. The event gives Baldwin residents the opportunity to give back to the environment and their surrounding communities by cleaning up along the coast and waterways and within their cities. Call 251-928-9792 or visit AlabamaCoastalCleanup.com for more info about the clean-up zones. Volunteers—involved citizens, community organizations, businesses, individuals, school groups and families—are needed to help with the cleanup. Participants can find a cleanup zone near them at AlabamaCoastalCleanup.com. All supplies are provided, and volunteers who come out early will receive a free t-shirt. The Alabama Coastal Cleanup is part of an international effort led by the Ocean Conservancy to remove debris from coastal waters. This litter is not only an eyesore but can pose a real threat to both marine wildlife and humans. Participation provides a unique opportunity to be a part of the solution. Alabama joined this effort in 1987. Items removed from Baldwin beacahes have included enough ruined furniture, home appliances, computers and laptops to completely equip a house or office. To volunteer at a specific zone, call or email the captains listed below or just show up before noon at the listed zones. Each morning, cyclists will start from Orange Beach and ride 25, 45 or 75 miles. All routes are well supported with fully-stocked rest stops every 10-12 miles and safety provided by medical personnel, HAM radio operators, law enforcement and motorcycle escorts. Rides will begin and end at the Hampton Inn and Suites in Orange Beach. Visit bikeMS.org, call 205-451-7475 or email [email protected] to register. “With rest stops at landmarks like Mullet Point Park and historic Fort Morgan, Tour de Beach truly takes advantage of all this wonderful community has to offer,” said Jennifer Ely, Director of Development and Bike MS Manager. The weekend-long celebration begins Friday evening with the Waterfront Welcome Party at the ride’s host hotel, The Hampton Inn. Cyclists are invited to pick up their packet and enjoy cocktails on the beach. After the ride, riders and volunteers can relax beachfront in the Bike MS lounge with massages and lunch. Saturday night, cyclists and their families will enjoy Tour de Beach’s signature Seafood Feast catered by Lulu’s, Wintzell’s Oyster House and Doc’s Seafood Shack. “Bike MS: Tour De Beach is perfect for cyclists of all levels. It gives cyclists and volunteers a way to support an important cause while having a great time,” Ely said. Bike MS, hosted by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, is the premier fundraising cycling series in the U.S. for anyone seeking a personal challenge and a world free of multiple sclerosis. All participants have access to bike mechanics, support vehicles, rest stops, a finish line celebration and much more. Nearly 100,000 cyclists participate in Bike MS across the United States each year, riding in more than 85 Bike MS rides. With route options to fit any experience level, anyone anywhere can accept the challenge and fuel progress to help create a world free of MS. The largest fundraising cycling series in the country, Bike MS includes people living with MS, their friends, families and neighbors, as well as corporate teams and individuals who are driven to support critical research and life-changing services to help people with MS live their best lives. People living with MS can also participate in “I Ride with MS,” a special program recognizing Bike MS cyclists living with the disease. Proceeds raised will support cutting-edge MS research, and life-changing services for people living with MS so they can live their best lives. MON, SEPT 19 Gulf Shores’ Linda Center pens The Relationship Dance Linda Ray Center of Gulf Shores has just released her first book, a short biography with human interest stories about life, relationships, and religion. Having experienced relationship adversity, Linda said she felt compelled to share her story. In The Relationship Dance, the author illustrates how God joins people to dance in unity despite religious differences. The book contains eye-opening interviews and inspirational stories from various walks of life. The Kindle Edition is available on amazon.com for $2.99, and the paperback is available through the author: email [email protected]. Linda Ray Center (pictured left) is a local author, poet, and passionate speaker at churches, women's retreats, and conferences. After thirty-two years in a career in dance education in her native Dalton, Georgia, Linda and her husband, Bill, retired to the Alabama Gulf Coast twelve years ago. They have lived in Gulf Shores for all of those years. Linda is very active in Worship on the Water, the non-denominational ministry headquartered at the Flora-Bama Lounge. “Yes, I love my church,’’ she said. “Remember, Worship on the Water is a nonjudgment zone.’’ For more info, visit therelationshipdance.com. ROBERTSDALE GARDEN CLUB SPEARHEADING DRIVE TO CREATE LANDSCAPE AT SENIOR CENTER: The Robertsdale Garden Club in conjunction with the Baldwin County Master Gardeners is assisting the G. P. Thames Senior Center to create a landscape design. Master Gardener Theresa Sims has created a design which will be implemented after drainage problems are resolved. Theresa has attended landscape design courses in California in addition to being a member of the Baldwin County Master Gardeners. Sims met with Sandra Duncan, Director of the Senior Center; Terry Simpson, Streets, Parks and Landscaping Foreman, for the City of Robertsdale; Jimmie Lou Ramey, President of the Robertsdale Garden Club; and Ken Ramey and Mary Ann Lindsay to discuss various drainage problems which need to be resolved prior to proceeding with landscaping recommendations. Terry Simpson advised the group that a terrace on the west side of the Center needs to be expanded as well as cleaning gutters and repositioning of drains. Terry indicated that Greg Smith, City Engineer, would be consulted before proceeding with the modifications. Jimmie Lou stated that she and Ken met with Jeff Kelley of the South Baldwin Center for Technology regarding obtaining the plants recommended by Sims. An order for the plants will be submitted before November 1. Sandra Duncan will present the recommendations to the Robertsdale City Council requesting funds to correct the drainage problems in order to proceed with the landscape plan. Vista Del Mar is a $60-million luxury condominium complex being built adjacent to Gulf Islands National Seashore. Once complete, the nine-story tower will boast top-notch amenities and unobstructed views of the park — two reasons why pre-sales for the six-figure residences have been so brisk, developers say. Curt Boisfontaine, of Dallas-based Meridian Realty Advisors, said 53 of the 64 units had already been sold. Meridian is partnering with Destin-based JGM Development to build the project, and Boisfontaine himself will be moving into one of the units once construction is complete. “Vista Del Mar is located on an irreplaceable piece of beachfront,” Boisfontaine said this week. “The views are simply unmatched — I can’t wait to live there myself.” A previous condo tower by the same name stood on the site of Vista Del Mar for decades before Hurricane Ivan destroyed it in 2004. Boisfontaine wanted to rebuild in 2006, but his attempts to do so were hampered — first by a recession and then by the 2010 Gulf Oil Spill. When workers finally completed structural work on the tower last month, it was the culmination of a decade of waiting. Boisfontaine said this month’s ceremony — an ancient builders’ tradition with roots in Nordic culture — was as much a sigh of relief as a construction milestone. “It’s taken us 10 years,” he said, “but I believe we’ve given our buyers a tremendous value.” With the bones of the tower now in place, work can commence on the exterior of the building and the interior finishes. The architect for the project is Forrest Daniel, of Daphne, and the general contractor is Yates Con- Louis Bird; Beverly Bird; Dr. Beth Taylor struction, which has built numerous other condominiums along the Gulf Coast. Boisfontaine said work on Vista Del Mar should be totally complete in the second quarter of 2017, though he expected the remaining nine units to be sold well ahead of that date. The condos, with interiors designed by Dallas-based Wilson Associates, range from 2,000 to 3,300 square feet in size and are priced between $785,000 and $1.65 million. The funds will afford the program a fence to enclose the garden and is the first step towards making the program a reality. Dr. Taylor says the garden will consist of seasonal vegetables and flowers for cutting. Taylor is in her fourth year at Foley High School where she teaches Animal Science, Poultry Science, Veterinary Science and serves as the high school’s FFA advisor. A Foley High grad herself, she earned her B.S. and D.V.M. in veterinary medicine at Auburn. “I have been teaching at Foley High School since 2013. I love the veterinary field and enjoy leading my students to do great things in the world of agriculture,’’ she said. The addition of the community farm will be not only a tool for project based learning at the high school, it will also engage the students in the community. “The posts are going up and we are making progress! We are grateful to the Chamber Foundation and the City of Foley for this awesome opportunity to give hands-on experience to our students and to serve our local community,” Taylor said. Eden condo owners and Wounded War Heroes provide Perdido vacations for veterans When a roadside bomb tore through two muscles in Ret. 1st Sgt. Gary Powell’s shoulder in 2004, he could have left Iraq and taken a vacation, but he didn’t. “I didn’t report it,” Powell said in September from his Deridder, Louisiana home. “I didn’t want to get sent away from my soldiers.” Instead, Powell served a full year in Iraq and waited seven more, until after he had retired, to go in for surgery. He retired in 2010 and bought a five-acre piece of land in Derrider, a city of 10,000 located an hour north of Lake Charles, Louisiana. In 2014, Powell finally got the vacation he deserved when he was one of about two dozen wounded veterans selected to receive a free, week-long retreat hosted by Eden Condominiums in Perdido Key. The event, which will return to the beach for a third year Sept. 17-24, started when a condo owner at Eden offered his unit to a wounded veteran to thank him for his service. Word of the gesture spread, and, soon, other owners were offering to do the same. The retreat has grown every year since. “The Perdido Area is best known for its beaches,” April Adams, Eden’s rental manager, said, “but we’re a military town through and through. These folks gave everything so we could have the freedom to enjoy our little slice of Paradise. This is just our way of giving back to them a small piece of what they’ve given us.” Powell, who was referred to Eden by the nonprofit Wounded War Heroes, attended the retreat for a second time in 2015. He won’t be traveling to Perdido Key for this year’s retreat, but said the experience of the first two years had meant a lot to him. “When I got injured and bullets were being shot at me, I found myself asking what I was doing in Iraq,” he said. “Through the help of the Wounded War Heroes program, I’ve come to see what I was fighting for. I found out that I was fighting for the small, hometown folks of America, you know, not the politicians and all the other folks, because, since I’ve been in the program, I’ve seen a lot of people showing their appreciation.” During the retreat, local businesses rolled out the welcome mats for Powell and his fellow veterans — donating meals, jet skis and even manicures. Eden treated the veterans and their spouses to a free day at their in-house spa during their stay, and Powell — a 30-year Army veteran — had his nails done. “I got into it,” Powell laughed. “I got into it, man.” Powell said the time spent with other veterans and the picturesque surroundings were among the highlights of the trip. “I had never been to Florida,” he said, “and I just fell in love with it. I was trying to talk the wife into moving, but she won’t have no part of it.” Still, Powell hopes to return soon. “I keep a bug out bag, just in case,” he said. “I could be gone within 30 minutes.” Eden is still looking for partners to help make the event as memorable for this year’s attendees as it was for Powell. Thomas said Eden was also accepting donations of household goods so the veterans’ condos would be well-stocked during their stay. Those wishing to help can call Eden at 850-492-336 or send an email to [email protected]. Pictured: Sgt. Gary Powell enjoying Perdidio with his grandaughter. Buzz Valadao adds his own dishes to old Point favorites Buzz Valadao’s culinary style reflects his background in Portuguese & Italian dishes that were weaned in restaurants in his native New England. But his local roots run deep as well. And he earned his well deserved chops building businesses at The Outrigger in Orange Beach and Ryan’s Catch on Grande Lagoon that also included finessing a loyal and local happy hour crowd at those pre-Ivan bistros. Buzz, who was also at Trigger’s for 10 years before recently taking over at The Point Restaurant on Innerarity, also has Rusty’s Fish Camp on a local resume that now stretches 28 years. He said he won’t mess with The Point’s staples. Just as The Ivys did back when they opened in 1955, The Point will serve fried mullet. The gumbo recipe is also well tested and remains. But Buzz will add his renowned cajun & creole influenced sauces, his popular fried cheesecake and his own take on fresh fish specials. His regulars insist that he still put his mac & cheese on the menu. Going into month four at The Point, Buzz says he is having fun, especially with the restaurant’s new emphasis on music. In addition to the good old bluegrass tradition that is Bubba & Them on weekends, Smokin’ Elvis has been playing Sunday afternoons and Sam Glass leads a jam Sunday evenings at 7 p.m. The Ole River String Band plays on Thursday nights, and Sandy Roots produces a monthly concert series in the courtyard. “We want the place to be an asset to the community like it’s always been,’’ Buzz said. “Both the management and the owners think it’s important to give back to the community as much as it has given us. “Hopefully, we will continue to make great food, have a lot of fun and make some money while we’re doing it,’’ he added. Her interest in photography first sparked by taking pictures of herself. Her junior year, she enrolled in a class that teaches students how to run their own business. She chose photography as her specialty and Diaography was born. From there, her business grew to cover college events, graduation, weddings, pageants, maternity and engagement shoots. But she did not stop there. Lydia went on to Faulkner State Community College and was awarded a full scholarship for her photography work. After being accepted to Troy University this fall, she submitted her portfolio and applied for the position as official photographer for the university. She got the job. Her duties at Troy include all official events, organization and club pictures. Students analyzed information from the novel Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse, along with multiple informational articles, to illustrate the perspectives of people living in the Dust Bowl during the 1930’s. Students used a template of an eye to show how the Dust Bowl people viewed life during that time, illustrating their point of view inside the iris.
