I am proud to note that Holtz
Children's Hospital has been
ranked one of America's best
children's hospitals by U.S. News
& World Report.
Holtz is among the country's elite when it comes to treating
kidney disorders in children and providing intensive care to
the tiniest babies according to U.S. News & World Report's
America's Best Children's Hospitals. The rankings can be
found online at www.usnews.com/childrenshospitals and were
featured in the August issue of U.S.News & World Report.
But, this is only the beginning of a new era. We have plans
to add a new Children's Ambulatory Pavilion to provide
centralized outpatient care, overcoming a severe handicap
for children needing outpatient services at Jackson. There is
an article covering the details later in this newsletter.
And, we will have more, updated information on this project in
our December newsletter. We are working in close partnership
with the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and
all of the Jackson Health System to bring this important new
delivery of health care to life.
In closing, I want to note that the Foundation reacted quickly
to the early signs of financial strife and reduced our operating
costs significantly to meet the challenges. In addition, we have
positioned ourselves to adjust to a better economy, when it happens.
And, in the meantime, we have added exciting new special
fundraising events. We are rallying for kids with cancer in
November with a celebrity scavenger cup event. And in the
early part of 2010, we will host a 5k Jackson run and walk for
all of the South Florida community.
With your continuing support, we look forward to more
growth and accomplishments in the upcoming months.

The Rally for Kids with Cancer™ Scavenger Cup is ignited by
the desire to help end kids' cancer. This exciting event is designed
for participants who share a passion for exotic cars, exclusive access
to celebrities and raising funds for some incredible causes—
Jackson Memorial Foundation, International Kids Fund and Holtz
Children's Hospital.
All participating Rally Drivers must agree to fundraise a minimum
of $25,000 each to qualify and draft their Celebrity Navigator.
The higher the funds raised, the better draft position earned.
This event will feature several well-known celebrities, including
Honorary Chair Eva Longoria Parker, best known for her role as
Gabrielle Solis on ABC’s “Desperate Housewives.”

Recognition Dinner Brings
Fundraising Surprises
We recently had the pleasure of honoring 42 new Golden Angel
“plus” gifts at our Golden Angel Society recognition dinner at
Joe's Stone Crab Restaurant, highlighted by a surprise and
magnanimous new $500,000 pledge by Cindy Davis Carr to
Holtz Children's Hospital in honor of Fana Holtz’s birthday.
Harvey and Roberta Chaplin were honored for their million-dollar
gift to rebuild the Pediatric Emergency Room at Holtz Children’s
Hospital. Eight new Angels were inspired to make new pledges
during the dinner. They were: Gerald Moore, Carolynn and
Michael Friedman, Shirley Fletcher, Mariana Cordoba (who is being
made a Golden Angel by her aunt Maria Cordoba Good), Fran Fields
Gordon and Samuel Gordon, Norma and Sammy Gordon,
Mariana and Emilio Martinez, and Ann and Frank Rubino.

Over the years, Cindy’s dynamic public and professional
persona, as well as her deeply personal charitable causes,
have won her countless awards and recognition.
One of the institutions occupying a place closest to her
heart is the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial
Medical Center, to which she continues to be a major
contributor. For the University of Miami-Sylvester
Comprehensive Cancer Center, she has four times held a
seat as Honorary Chairperson. She was also inducted into
the Donor Society Foundation, as well as into the highly
prestigious IBIS Society.
Jackson Memorial Foundation is honored to be one of the
charities to which Cindy contributes her valuable time,
money, and sincerest efforts, as well as serving on its Board
of Directors.
Chairman Pat Wallace introduced this year’s Rainmakers,
Mike Carricarte, Sr. and Chris Riley, who were the extraordinary
individuals whose influence and energy serve as a catalyst in
making a difference at Jackson.
Golden Angels Society VIP Membership News
We are pleased to announce that a new Golden Angel Society VIP
membership card will be available soon. This new card replaces the
former membership and parking cards and provides access to all the
Golden Angel Society benefits and free parking at Jackson facilities.
As Jackson Memorial Hospital has implemented a new parking system,
older parking cards will no longer work.
Members of the Golden Angel Society enjoy access to an
unparalleled selection of health benefits. For these generous donors,
a Golden Angel Concierge assists with all referrals and appointments
to primary care providers and specialists, and there is expedited
medical access to the hospital and its physicians. Golden Angel
Society membership also includes the Direct Access program, which
arranges immediate air ambulance service to Jackson if needed when
Golden Angels travel outside of the United States.

The Three Jacks
Benefit Concert for
Jackson Memorial Hospital
The Three Jacks, an Irish/Celtic/Folk/Rock band, will play a
foot-stomping, Miami-style Irish concert event to benefit
Jackson Memorial Hospital.
The concert is a “thank you” from the band and its leader, Henk Milne,
whose wife Pippa underwent emergency surgery at Jackson last year.
Pippa, who spent a week in intensive care and a month in rehabilitation,
has made a wonderful recovery. As Henk explains, “This concert is
one way to express our heartfelt thanks to the truly wonderful
people at Jackson and the fantastic surgical team at The University
of Miami Sylvester Center—starring the incredible Dr. Mike Wang!”

Guardian Angels Interactive
Arts and Crafts Program
Once a month the Guardian Angels come to Holtz to
participate in the Interactive Arts and Crafts Program
and spend quality time with the children.
Their presence lifts the child’s spirit, engages their mind
and inspires their creativity. But most importantly,
this brief period of time will allow a child to forget about his
or her condition.
While we have a strong core group of Angels that continue
to come regularly, new members are always invited to attend.
For some Guardian Angels, joining the Arts and Crafts
Program is just the beginning. While coming to the
hospital once a month for the Arts and Crafts Program is
wonderful, some have found the experience so rewarding
that they have completed the Volunteer Services Program
at Holtz and now volunteer on a regular basis.
The Volunteer Services Program at Holtz is a wonderful
vehicle for individuals to share their generosity and kindness
with the patients and help to brighten their hospital stay.
Please come and join us and see for yourself the difference
your presence can make in the life of a child.

Child Life Program Receives
Helping Hand from “Angels”
At Holtz Children’s Hospital, Child Life is a team of specialists who
play an important role in the treatment and recovery of every child.
Working on an individual basis with each patient and family,
these specialists strive to make children feel at home in the hospital
and provide emotional support to help them cope with their illness.
The Child Life Program is a key component in the overall experience
that a child has during his or her time at Holtz, and they are
also directly involved with our monthly Arts and Crafts Program.
So, when we received word that their budget was being cut,
we knew that something needed to be done.
The Guardian Angels stepped into action and began making deliveries
of crayons, paint, construction paper, dollhouses, puzzles, games,
play kitchen items and toys for our Infant/Toddler Unit.
While the Guardian Angels continue to make donations in the
form of financial support, materials for the children, or simply
giving of their time, the priceless gift that the Guardian Angels
consistently give is their love and concern for the precious
children at Holtz.
We thank this incredible group for their never-ending
support of our efforts!
11th Annual Guardians
of the Children Luncheon
In early October, we held a luncheon to celebrate the many
accomplishments of our Guardian Angels of Holtz Children’s Hospital.
This fabulous luncheon featured a runway fashion show from the
collection of Carolina Herrera, as well as a special guest appearance by
the designer herself! Look in the next issue of this newsletter for the
full story and photos.

Success
Marlie Casseus Undergoes
Successful Surgery
Marlie Casseus, the Haitian teenager who received surgery more than
four years ago to remove a rare tumor that once covered her entire
face, returned to Holtz Children’s Hospital for her seventh surgery.
The surgeries are to correct her polyostotic fibrous dysplasia,
a condition that affects every single bone of her body and impairs
her development. The recent surgery was necessary to treat
infections that developed as a result of unsanitary conditions
during last year’s hurricane season in Haiti.
Marlie’s surgery was possible thanks to the community’s support
of the International Kids Fund (IKF), a program of Jackson
Memorial Foundation that is dedicated to helping children
throughout the world overcome serious illness. The IKF has
assisted hundreds of children like Marlie from over 43 different
countries. In fact, because of the continued generosity of the
community, our International Kids Fund was able to save the
lives of 59 children in 2008 alone!
“We’re happy to report that the surgery to treat Marlie’s infections,
remove excess scar tissue and replace her facial implants was successful,”

Our opportunity to initiate a new era of health care
for children in Miami-Dade
Jackson Memorial Hospital, Jackson Memorial Foundation and the
University of Miami Miller School of Medicine are planning a new
Holtz Children’s Hospital. The first step will be a four-story centralized
outpatient care center—the Children's Ambulatory Pavilion—that will
unite our wonderful UM Pediatric Specialists under one roof,
serving the thousands of children who come to us for care.
Pediatric outpatient services are currently scattered among eleven
buildings on and off the UM/Jackson Health System campus,
creating a complex system that is difficult for families to access and
navigate. The creation of this Children's Ambulatory Pavilion will
take our exceptional medical care to the next level, allowing us to
relocate the majority of the outpatient clinical facilities under one
roof and provide better and more appropriately delivered care.

University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center.
“We knew Marlie's case would have a long road to recovery.
Since performing her first surgery several years ago, Marlie has
shown great signs of improvement. However, we are committed
to helping her on that road to recovery, and her most recent
surgery will just be a stop along the way.”

The new Children's Ambulatory
Pavilion is designed to provide
a full range of critical pediatric
services under one roof including
the Children’s Heart Center,
a 24-hour Infusion/Transfusion
area, CMS primary care clinics,
obstetrics clinic, neurodiagnostics
unit and a pediatric rehabilitation unit.
The vision for the new Children's Ambulatory Pavilion features a
design that emphasizes family-centered care, with family counseling
facilities, play areas, and waiting areas on each floor equipped with
computer kiosks to teach families more about their child’s medical
condition and treatment options. The Children's Ambulatory Pavilion
will contain the first and only children’s outpatient day hospital in the
county, giving us the capacity to treat more children while freeing up
more beds for children requiring inpatient care. With pediatric-specific
technology, our new outpatient center eliminates the need to treat
children in adult facilities with equipment designed for adults. Children
will receive medical care in facilities specifically designed for them.
Reaching Out
Meet Carol Lang
Carol Lang is among the
newest additions to the
Jackson Memorial Foundation
family. She has been on the
job as the director of human
resources and administration
for just over a year, but she’s
already made a big impact.
“It’s an exciting time to be here, as the Foundation and
Foundation Health Services grow and expand,” says Lang.
“With nearly 80 employees,” Lang says, “the company is
still small enough that I get to know almost every single
employee—but it’s growing rapidly.” Lang, who joined the
Foundation after spending a decade with the Zoological
Society of Florida in the same capacity, has spent her first
year at JMF putting systems in place, revamping the
employee manual, and helping to create new hiring processes
that will bring in the best and brightest candidates.
“Getting the right hires and people in place can have a
strategic affect on the organization,” explains Lang.
While her role is behind-the-scenes, she enjoys tremendous
satisfaction knowing that what she does can have a positive
impact on the success of the Foundation’s mission.
Lang, a Miami native, has traveled around the globe,
twice on safari to Africa, as well as trips to China (the
first year it was opened up to visitors), and much of
Europe. “When I was little, I made a list of places I’d like
to visit, and I’ve been fortunate to have already been to
many on that list,” says Lang.

Gordon’s Gift to
Transform JMH’s
All Faith Chapel
Frances Fields Gordon and
her husband, Samuel Gordon,
have already given generously
to support Jackson Memorial
Hospital and its mission.
Fran made a founding gift to the Circle of Life, the planned
giving society of Jackson Memorial Foundation, created the
Frances Fields Gordon Endowment for Mental Health, and has
underwritten the cost of a Benefactor Suite.
Now, once again, Fran has responded to a need with open-hearted
compassion and enthusiasm. Dr. Eneida Roldan, president and
chief executive officer of Jackson Health System, made a request,
asking for help to transform the All Faith Chapel. Located in the
West Wing Lobby, the Chapel offers worship services and daily
mass and is a source of solace and comfort to all who visit.
Through Fran’s gift, the Chapel will undergo a “facelift” that will
create a warm space designed to be more inviting to people of all
faiths. Its fresh new look will include more subdued lighting and
comfortable seating to offer a place for respite and refuge. With the
renovation, the new chapel will reach out to all and be welcoming
to all, a quiet place for families to practice spiritual reflection and
also where hospital staff can come to pray or reflect.

A special “thank you” to Mary Spencer for her incredible gift of $100,000 that will
directly benefit the Child Life Program at Holtz Children’s Hospital.
Through this wonderful act of kindness and generosity, the Child Life Program will be
afforded the opportunity to continue to do what they do best—provide a supportive and
friendly environment to the children and families that come to Holtz for world-class
medical care.
