WBF President: policing the game ‘not a simple thing’
The turmoil over the explosion of cheating
allegations in the bridge world last year may have
ebbed to an extent, but World Bridge Federation
President Gianarrigo Rona knows the issue is far
from settled.
For starters, there are still hearings on three
pairs who are either suspected of cheating or
have confessed to doing so. The hearings, to be
conducted by the European Bridge League, are
scheduled for April and May.
Leading up to those hearings and beyond, Rona
will be traveling the world to try to recruit the 124
member countries of the WBF to join the war on
unethical behavior at the bridge table. The plans
include revealing new methods for safeguarding
the game. One of his first trips will be to South
America, where he will conduct a seminar on
methods now in development to prevent, detect and
prove wrongdoing at the bridge table.
For example, Rona foresees a time when every
playing card will have a chip embedded to allow
for a complete record of every play. Every bid and
play will be captured on video.
The WBF and many national bridge
organizations have for years used only
“symmetrical” playing cards, designed to look the
same no matter how they are positioned.
What the WBF and national bridge
organizations need the most to combat unethical
behavior is evidence, Rona says.
The WBF has set up a hotline on its website

Entry fees for multi-session team events are per
person per session; This does not apply to twosession Swiss teams.
This fee structure applies at NABCs to national
rated knockouts (Vanderbilt, 0–10,000 KO),
national Swiss team events (Jacoby Open Swiss,
Machlin Women’s Swiss and 0–10,000 Swiss) and
regional knockouts that are at least two days long.
Teams are charged the base price of the event
times the number of persons on the team.
For example, an event with a base price of $16
is $64 for a team of four, $80 for a team of five, or
$96 for a team of six.

Director-in-Charge of
the tournament, all such devices must be inoperable
and turned off.
1.11.2 Any device capable of either sending
or receiving electronic signals must not be visible

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERS
Duplicate protocols
– part 2
By Brent Manley
This happened at a club game. West opened
1♦, East bid 1♥. West rebid 2NT and West bid 3♣,
Alerted by West, who then bid 3NT. When asked
the meaning of
the Alert, West
said it was a
natural bid but
her partner
might have
meant something
different. The
opponent, Fred
Weidman of
Oakland NJ,
said a natural
bid didn’t need
an Alert. Said West: “Well, I Alerted in case I
shouldn’t have.”
I strongly recommend getting into the habit
of counting your cards after you take them from
the board. If you find that you have too many
or too few cards, you can take care of the issue
efficiently by calling the director. He or she
usually will go to the table where the board had
just been played and make a search. If the card is
found, no problem. If the missing card isn’t found
and hand records are in use, the director can
determine which card you are missing and get
that card from another board or deck. All is well.
If you fail to count the cards and later find
that one is missing, the director may be able to
find it, but you might end up with a penalty.
Say the opponents were playing 4♥ and you
thought you started with two low clubs. Say
declarer plays three rounds of clubs and you ruff.
When you notice near the end that you are short

one card, you will call the
director. If the director finds
your missing card and it’s a
club, you have revoked.
Because you, not your
partner, won the trick on
which you revoked, if your
side won any subsequent
tricks, you owe the opponents
two tricks. Even if your
side didn’t win the revoke
trick or your partner won it
instead of you, if your side
won any tricks after that,
you will forfeit a trick to the
opponents. On occasion, you
will forfeit even more tricks,
but that’s a discussion for
another day.
Another aspect of
duplicate that can seem
tricky at first is the use of
bidding boxes. I remember
when bidding boxes were
introduced at the club in
Memphis many years ago.
Some of the players objected
to them, but it wasn’t long before everyone
realized how much the devices improved the
game.
With the bidding cards on the table until
the auction is over, there is no need to ask for a
review. The game is quieter. No longer do you
hear an excited player almost shout a bid of 7NT
or make a loud penalty double.
Care and attention are needed, however, in
the use of the bidding boxes. It is not unusual for
a person to intend to take a particular card from
the bidding box but accidentally pick a different
card. If the bidder notices the mistake before his
partner has called, the bid can be changed.
This is different from selecting a card,
putting it down and then changing your mind. In
This contract should be played identically at
either form of scoring.
The danger is that West has the outstanding
three trumps, and after you ruff the ♥K at trick two
and lead the ♠K, West will win, get an encouraging
diamond discard from East and underlead his likely
♦A to East’s king. Now a third heart from East
promotes West’s ♠10 to the setting trick.
The answer is to discard the ♦8 at trick two.
Now West cannot get East in for a heart play to
promote his ♠10. You wind up living happily ever
after, losing two hearts and a spade rather than one
heart, one diamond and two spades! The full deal:

that case, you are stuck with your bid.
This is analogous to the situation where
you lead from hand up to a holding of A-Q-x in
dummy. You are planning to play the queen and
in fact call for the queen before you notice that
your left-hand opponent has played the king. If
you said “queen” before you noticed, you are
stuck with that play.
Tomorrow: More duplicate practices
Kailee Betts from Reno was part of a
small group from Reno Youth Bridge who
came to play on Saturday. Unfortunately, it
was a group of five, and the game turned
out to be a one-table affair, leaving someone
without a seat. Next door, the Gold Rush was
getting underway, there was an inconvenient
half table and Bruce Thornburgh, in town
from Boise ID, still needed a partner.
Bruce and Kailee joined forces. They
so enjoyed playing the first session that,
although they were obligated only for the
one session, they returned after the break
to play the second set. Two of Kailee’s RYB
friends were so inspired by Kailee that,
instead of leaving after the first session, they
made it two, too.

GOLDER NAP FLIGHT B - QUALIFIERS
Alfredo’s latest artwork

“Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break
them like an artist.” (Pablo Picasso)
User discretion is advised. Do not (yet) try this
at your local club.
The final of the Friday-Saturday KO Bracket 1
was thrilling. Team Cayne (James Cayne, Lorenzo
Lauria, Michael Seamon, Antonio Sementa,
Mustafa Cem Tokay, Alfredo Versace) won by
7 IMPs over team Schwartz (Richard Schwartz,
Huub Bertens, Boye Brogeland, Allan Graves,
Daniel Korbel, Espen Lindqvist).

a bridge artist’s mind? Let’s go.
Alfredo: “Dummy is very likely to be strong,
with five cards in hearts and five cards in clubs,
including the ace and king. That’s to say that I
can’t see more than these two aces for us. I have to
create a trick.”
Alfredo quickly led a low club.
Obviously, declarer could not figure out what
was happening (how could he think of a lead from
the queen of trumps??). After that lead, Bertens did
not try a finesse he was sure would lose. Instead, he
cashed the top clubs . . .down one. The full deal:

Friday afternoon
continued from page 1
Club players at McQueen High School.
boards together with some fresh fruit, Emma tells
about her favorite bridge memory: “I won an open
tournament… You know, I said ‘open’ – everybody
could play. I was second, when luckily my
opponent passed on his partner’s splinter bid!”
According to Emma, there are plenty of
didactic priorities in bridge before learning not
to rejoice at an opponent’s mistake. “You can get
better and better and this is what I want to do! I
wish I could be part of the national team, one day.”
“So who is your favorite bridge champion?”
“I don’t know any. Should I?”
When the bridge stars of the library start
playing, their smiles become laughs. The
atmosphere becomes really enchanting (you know
it). So, more students who are just there for the
books come near the tables. One of the young
players starts to explain the rules to the kibitzers,
jumping directly to: “Don’t lead the opponent’s
suit, even if they haven’t bid it.”
In the meanwhile, hot pizza provided by the
teachers arrives.
“I won a trophy, too” says Matt. He keeps it in
his room, next to the cups of his soccer victories
and the Boy Scout awards.
“Matt, do you know that besides seeing Bill
Gates in a bridge tournament, you could also meet
… well, his parents play bridge, so you could
actually meet Mark Zuckerberg?” Eyes becoming
even bigger.
Emma tells about her experience at the last
Youth NABC in Chicago: “That was wonderful.
Bridge is so challenging. I met people from all the
parts of the United States and also from many other
parts of the world. I made connections. This is
amazing.”
Yes, it is. So shouldn’t we borrow the library’s
quote?
“The cards of the board are only 52. But
they can be arranged in ways that can make
you cry, giggle, love, have, wonder, ponder and
understand.”

LEVENTRITT SILVER RIBBON - QUALIFIERS
Rona
continued from page 1
to take reports of wrongdoing, actual or suspected.
Anyone who wishes to report such activity can visit
the home page (www.worldbridge.org) and click
on the link to the High-Level Players Commission.
Rona pledges that all reports will be investigated
and taken seriously, especially those that are
accompanied by evidence.
“If you think someone is cheating, Rona
says, “it is your duty to provide information, not
rumors.”
One of Rona’s goals as WBF chief is to work
toward enhancing technological resources to make
the game more secure. At the world championships
in Chennai, India, last fall, 12 of the tables in the
main teams event were surrounded by cameras
recording every bid and play. In this year’s big
tournament – the World Bridge Games in Wroclaw,
Poland – 24 tables will be monitored.
“Step by step,” Rona says, “we will arrive at
more technology. We are the coordinators.”
The WBF is committed to cleaning up the game,
but Rona views the landscape realistically. “We
can’t believe we are living in paradise. Humans are
corruptible and it is dreaming to believe that at a
certain moment all cheaters will disappear.”
That’s not to say that those who are caught
breaking the rules will not be dealt with harshly,
Rona says, but prosecutions must be based on
evidence.
While he is dealing with the cheating issue,
Rona is also focusing on the 2016 World Youth
Teams Championships in Salsomaggiore, Italy,
scheduled for Aug. 3 to 13. Rona believes a record
turnout is possible this year. For information about
that tournament, visit the WBF website.
Once that competition is completed, the
World Bridge Games in Wroclaw will be the WBF
president’s focus. The tournament was once known
as the World Bridge Olympiad. Each member
country of the WBF can send four teams, one each
to play in the Open, Women’s, Seniors and Mixed
Teams (a new event).
The tournament also features National Pairs
Championships: Open, Women’s, Seniors and
Mixed.
Note: there are no transnational events in
Wroclaw. All pairs and teams must be made up of
players from the same country.
Wroclaw, the largest city in western Poland,
is easy to reach for most travelers from North
America, says Rona. For 2016, the city has
been designated by the European Union as the
European Capital of Culture. During the year, the
city organizes a series of cultural events with a
strong European dimension. “There will be a lot of
activities in Wroclaw,” says Rona.

Got a hand you just have to share or a nice
story? We’d love to see it.
The Daily Bulletin has its own email address:
[email protected]. You’ll also find
it on the front page under the “Daily Bulletin”
between the date and the editors’ names.
This email address won’t be checked with any
regularity when the NABC is not in session, so
please continue to use our office email addresses
for non-tournament–related correspondence.
Please be scent-sitive!
Some people have an extreme sensitivity to
fragrances (colognes or perfumes). Many ACBL
clubs, units and districts have adopted policies
that prohibit players from wearing fragrances.
The ACBL has not issued an official policy on the
matter, preferring instead to appeal to the goodwill
of its members to refrain from using fragrances.
Because duplicate bridge requires players to
be in close proximity to each other, individuals
who suffer from fragrance-related reactions
cannot avoid those who are wearing them. Among
the commonly reported symptoms are intense
headaches (indeed, fragrances can frequently be a
trigger for migraine sufferers) or breathing-related
problems. For these individuals, the issue is much
more serious than simply disliking a particular
smell — it’s a real health problem.
The ACBL asks everyone to give this issue the
consideration it deserves. Please, if you’re going to
play in a club or a tournament, don’t wear cologne,
perfume or scented lotions.

Revenge is a dish best served cold. For reasons
that may become obvious, no names will be given
on this report. The deal, from the first semifinal
session of the Kay Platinum Pairs, featured
opportunities given and not taken.

West led the ♠6: 3, jack, queen. The ♣Q is
covered all around, a second club to the 10 finds
the good news. Now a heart towards the jack
is allowed to score. When a diamond is led to
the king, it holds the trick; but who has the ace?
Would West, an acknowledged world expert, duck
smoothly – or would he twitch? And if he twitches,
almost imperceptibly, does that make him more or
less likely to have the ♦A?
Things are made more interesting by the fact
that South and West are occasional partners and so
should be familiar with one another’s playing style.
If you want to punish West for his duck of the
♥K and need the ♦A to be onside, then cross to
dummy with a club and play a second diamond. It
won’t help East to win, leaving this ending:

Neither a spade nor a heart breaks up the
squeeze, and if East ducks the second diamond,
declarer cashes the last club and strip-squeezes
West out of a diamond if he has one, then he
endplays West in spades to lead hearts at trick 12.
Plus 690 was a cold top.

Vanderbilt Kn
The premier event of the Spring North
American Championships is the Vanderbilt
Knockout Teams. The history of the prestigious
contest stretches back to 1928 when the man who
invented contract bridge, Harold S. Vanderbilt, put
the trophy bearing his name into play.
The winners list is a who’s who of bridge, a
parade of the titans of the game. As part of the
ACBL’s ongoing archiving project, photos of some
of the winners are included with this history.
The Vanderbilt Trophy
The Vanderbilt Trophy for the Vanderbilt
Knockout Teams was donated in 1928 by Harold S.
Vanderbilt, who won the event in 1932 and 1940.
The Vanderbilt was contested annually in New
York – as a separate championship – until 1958
when it became part of the Spring North American
Championships.
Vanderbilt winners receive replicas of the
trophy – a practice initiated by Vanderbilt from
the first running of the event and perpetuated by a
$100,000 trust fund administered by ACBL under
the terms of Vanderbilt’s will.
On display at ACBL Headquarters in Horn Lake
MS are the Vanderbilt Trophy, as well as replicas
donated by the families of Caroline Taylor, who
won the Vanderbilt in 1928, and Helen Sobel Smith,
a Vanderbilt winner in 1944 and 1945.

The last board of the Kay Platinum Pairs

You may not like your double or dummy’s
raise but we are not judging a beauty contest.
The opening lead (standard) is the ♣J: 3, 2, ace.
Declarer plays the ♥5: 6, jack. Plan the defense.
The ♥6 might be suit preference. Alas, it is
unreadable. The choice is stark. Play partner for the
♠A and go for ruffs for yourself or a singleton club
and go for ruffs for partner?
It looks a simple choice, but neither is the
winning answer. A look at the full deal shows that
you must duck the ♥A, playing declarer for his
precise hand.

Win the next heart and cash three diamonds.
Not an easy defense to find.
Please be on your best
behavior.
The ACBL wants you to know that Zero
Tolerance is in effect at this tournament.
You are expected to treat your partner and
opponents with respect and a friendly demeanor. As
the ZT policy dictates,
rude behavior will not
be tolerated.
If a player at the
table behaves in an
unacceptable manner,
the director should be
called immediately.
The director may assess
an immediate ¼ board
disciplinary penalty (3
IMPs in team games).
If both members of a
partnership are guilty,
the penalties are
additive (¼ board per player = ½ board). A second
offense in the same event may result in ejection.
The ultimate purpose of the ZT policy is to
create a much more pleasant atmosphere in our
NABCs and a more enjoyable bridge experience
for everyone.

What are the odds?
By Barry Rigal
It is always surprising when experts
demonstrate fallible grasp of the percentage tables.
On this deal from the second semifinal session
of the Kay Platinum Pairs, a player who has
represented the U.S. open team more than once in
the Bermuda Bowl found himself in notrump as
South.

South actually played 3NT, but we won’t give
him the benefit of the doubt and say he would play
differently in 6NT!
How would you play after a spade lead? I think
it is best to win the ♠A and lead a diamond to the
queen, planning to lead back to the ♦10 at your next
opportunity, whether the ♦Q holds or not.
If, as happens, your ♦Q wins and a diamond
to the 10 loses to the king, a heart will come back.
Do you finesse or go up with the ace? Your guess
is as good as mine. If you rise with the ace you are
relying on diamonds to break – there is no clubheart squeeze if they don’t. If diamonds behave,
you are home if clubs break or, as in this case, the
squeeze works.
Also note that if East had ♦K J 8 x and no ♥K
in a 2=4=4=3 pattern, he should rise with the ♦K at
trick two and shift to a heart. If he doesn’t, declarer
might conceivably come home with the aid of
some good card reading. So maybe diamonds are a
favorite to break?
P.S. Our expert declarer won the ♠Q at trick
one to lead a diamond to the 10, preferring a 50%
line to the 75% line. Sigh.

Runners-up in the Kay Platinum Pairs, Kent
Mignocchi.
The runners-up were Joel Wooldridge and Kent
Mignocchi.
Hampson and Greco, one of ACBL’s top pairs
for nearly 20 years, moved from fifth place to
the lead with a 60.76% game in the first session.
Their 58.73% game in the second final session was
enough to keep them in first.
The win was the 14th NABC+ win for Greco.
Hampson has 19. They have won 13 NABC+
events as partners. The two have also won a world
championship together – the 2010 Rosenblum Cup
in Philadelphia. Hampson was a member of the
winning squad in the 2001 World Transnational
Open Teams in Paris.
The winners did have a scare in the Platinum
Pairs. When the final standings were printed out,
Hampson and Greco had a lead of less than half a
matchpoint – 443.86 to 443.39 for Wooldridge and
Mignocchi, who had a strong last round with 22.5
