ACBL hires new counsel - American Contract Bridge League
Daily Sunday, July 24, 2016 Bulletin Washington DC • July 21-31, 2016 88th North American Bridge Championships A member of the ACBL and the American Bridge Association (ABA) since the mid-1980s, she did not play bridge while she pursued her legal career and only recently returned to the game. A certified ABA bridge instructor, Dunn taught several beginning bridge classes at Chicago public libraries, community centers and her local club. One of her favorite bridge memories is winning the ABA Silver Life Master Player of the Year and she looks forward to advancing up the ACBL ranks. What follows is a closer look at ACBL’s new counsel. Dunn, 60, was born in West Helena AR, about 75 miles southwest of Memphis, where she spent her teen years. She graduated from Hamilton High School in 1974 and began an education odyssey that resulted in three degrees from Harvard, including one from the Harvard Law School. Dunns started college at Radcliffe, a liberal arts college that functioned as a female coordinate institution for the all-male Harvard. The school became coed in 1977. Ever busy, Dunn was active on the Radcliffe campus, organizing events and social clubs. Her advisors told her she should go to business school. The Golden Touch During the last week of June, Mitch Towner gave King Midas a run for his money – a million-dollar run, to be exact – and topped it off by earning a boatload of masterpoints. Gold, of course. The 29-year-old Towner of Tucson AZ is an up-and-comer in the world of top-level bridge. He’s notched two second-place finishes in limited NABC contests - the 2009 Red Ribbon Pairs playing with his father, and the 2013 Grand National Teams, Flight A – and he was a member of the U.S. Junior Team from 2010 to 2013. Towner is most proud, however, of his 13th-place finish in this year’s Platinum Pairs playing with John Ramos of West Hollywood CA. But Towner has been a fan of poker for many years, too, and has begun trying his luck at tournaments. Towner, an assistant professor of finance at the University of Arizona, describes himself as being very much an amateur at the game, and he came up empty-handed in his first few forays into money events. In late June, Towner entered the 2016 World Series of Poker’s Monster Stack No-Limit Hold’em tournament in Las Vegas and stunned the poker world by winning the contest that featured a field of almost 7,000 players. Towner took home a check for $1,120,196 and a coveted WSOP gold bracelet, given exclusively to winners. Not bad for a $1500 buy-in. Towner’s win in Las Vegas was an exciting Act 1 to that week; Act 2 was waiting for him in Los Angeles where he had previously agreed to play in the Long Beach Regional with Ramos and teammates Bob Etter of Sacramento CA and Alex Kolesnik of Ventura CA. Believing he would likely be eliminated Volume 88, Number 3 [email protected] | Editors: Paul Linxwiler and Brent Manley ACBL hires new counsel Linda Dunn, an attorney with extensive experience in the business world, has been hired to fill the newly created role of ACBL in-house counsel. As a full-time employee, Dunn is part of the executive management team at Headquarters in Horn Lake MS. Among other responsibilities, she assumes the duties formerly performed by League Counsel Peter Rank, who is retiring following the Summer NABC. Robert Hartman, ACBL’s chief executive officer, said he and the management team are pleased to have someone with Dunn’s experience and knowledge helping the organization move forward. “We are very pleased to have Linda on board,” Hartman said. Dunn’s experience encompasses large firm and inhouse legal practices, business planning and financial analysis as well as business management. She is a “triple Crimson”: She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and social relations from Harvard University, a law degree from Harvard Law School and an MBA from Harvard Business School. She recently received her master of laws degree from The John Marshall Law School in Chicago. Dunn learned to play bridge during high school in Memphis TN and continued to play during her college years. continued on page 5 GNT finals today The final round of all four flights of the Grand National Teams takes place today. In the Championship Flight, Martel (D21) meets Merblum (D25). Martel won its semifinal match against Stoltz (D20) 123-74, while Merblum won in two quarters by defeating Smith (D1) 121-37. In Flight A, Prairie (D6) battles Gao (D19). Prairie topped Pike (D23) 128-103 in the semifinal, and in the other bracket, Gao defeated Stein 143-46 in three quarters. The Flight B title will be decided in the allCalifornia match between Chokriwala (D23) and Wilson (D22). Chokriwala came back from a 60-IMP halftime deficit against Beecher (D13) to advance 135-127, while Wilson easily handled Anderson (D7) 181-102. The Flight C final features Chang (D22) vs. Huang (D21). Chang narrowly defeated Thorstad (D7) in the semifinal, 92-84, and Huang stayed in control against Nitschelm (D25) to win 130-87. Egyptians lead LM Pairs Ahmed Hussein and Tarek Sadek, both of Cairo, Egypt, start play today on the final day of the von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs with a lead of 4.63 matchpoints on a top of 47. Right behind them are Jeff Meckstroth and Eric Rodwell, who dropped into the event after their team lost in the quarterfinal round of the Grand National Teams Championship Flight. Bernstein-Baron lead Bruce Robert Bernstein of Albuquerque NM and Jay Barron of Tulsa OK lead the Bruce LM-5000 Pairs after yesterday’s semifinal round. In second are Bruce Luttrell and Barbara Luttrell of San Jose CA. Californians lead Young Charles Riffle of Emerald Hills CA and Douglas Grant of San Francisco lead the pack of semifinalists in the Young 0-1500 Pairs. They are followed by Texans Robert Schmidt and Ari Sippola, while New Yorkers Sharon Ainspan and Jacqueline Chang are third. Gong, Wu lead 10K Pairs fairly early from the four-day WSOP event which began on a Friday, Towner figured he would have plenty of time to join his team for the knockout event which began on Tuesday. When Towner surprisingly made it to the final of the poker tournament (a feat that guarantees a six-figure payout), his teammates were forced to find a substitute for the first two rounds of the Bracket 1 KO in Long Beach, and they picked up Phil Clayton of Huntington Beach CA. They hoped to survive to the second day of the contest on Wednesday when Towner could join them. They succeeded in this task while excitedly watching continued on page 5 Pre-registration required for Spingold and Mini-Spingold KOs Pre-registration for the Spingold, the Wagar and the Mini-Spingold KO Teams (5000 and 1500) is required before 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 24, in the Marriott Ballroom on the lobby level. In second with two sessions to play are Robert Katz, Ann Arbor MI, and Robert Cappelli, Sanibel FL. Collegiate title: Berkeley vs. Illinois The University of California at Berkeley will face the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the final of the 2016 Collegiate Bridge Bowl Championship. Berkeley defeated Northwestern University in yesterday’s semifinal round129-86, while Illinois beat the University of Chicago 161-60. Northwestern will square off against Chicago in a playoff for third-fourth. Daily Bulletin Page 3 Sunday, July 24, 2016 JUST FOR NEW PLAYERS For this tournament, the anecdotes you’re used to seeing at the beginning of the column are replaced by a Quick Tip at the end. Enjoy. Two ways to play By Brent Manley Take a look at the back page of this publication to learn about the many opportunities to play bridge in the Intermediate/Newcomer games. If you include midnight games – these are not I/N games, but you won’t find many experts in those contests – you can play practically all day long. That’s assuming you have the inclination and the stamina. I would guess that the majority of you are happy to play a couple of sessions a day. Most I/N offerings are pairs games. If you already have a partner, you are set. Just buy your entry, grab a couple of convention cards and find your table. If you don’t have a partner, you should head for the Partnership Desk in Exhibit Hall A near where the I/N games are played. It’s likely you know this already, but for those who need a refresher, here’s how you get your scores in pairs games. It’s all about comparisons. Say you are playing East-West, starting at table one. You are East-West pair 1. In a nine-table game, you will play 27 boards in nine rounds. Each board will be played nine times. When the session is completed, your scores on each of the boards will be compared to the scores achieved on those boards by the other eight pairs sitting East-West in your section. For each comparison, you can earn one matchpoint. If you do better on a board than six of the other pairs who played it, you get six matchpoints. If your score is the same as two other pairs, you get one-half matchpoint per board for the ties – i.e., one matchpoint. In this scenario, you would get seven matchpoints: six for beating the scores of six other pairs and one for tying two others. If your score on the board had been better than all the other East-West pairs who played it, you would have earned eight matchpoints. That is the maximum, Take all your chances at bridge By Eddie Kantar Dlr: West Vul: E-W ♠J764 ♥765 ♦ 10 7 ♣ 10 9 6 5 ♠82 ♥AQJ2 ♦AKQJ942 ♣— East opens 1♣ in third seat and you overcall 5♦. There must be a better way to bid this hand, but you can’t figure out what it is. Everybody passes and West leads the ♣K. You don’t catch much of a dummy, but hang in there, think positively and plan the play. How does playing a 9% contract grab you? also known as a “top.” If you had a bidding misunderstanding, got doubled and went minus 1100, you could count on getting a “bottom,” or “zero.” For the session, this process is repeated for each board you played. If the top score on a board is eight and you played 27 boards, the maximum number of matchpoints available is 216. Average – exactly half of the available matchpoints – is 108. If you have a good game and score, say, 135 matchpoints, you and your partner would be credited with a 62.5% game. Congratulations! You might well win the event with that score. Note that you don’t have to come up with huge scores to earn tops. If your score is the best on a particular board, you don’t have to go plus 1400 for doubling the opponents in a bad contract. Scoring plus 110 when everyone else is plus 90 would earn you the same top. Similarly, you can earn a top with a minus score, even a seemingly big one. Say you and partner bid 5♣ over the opponents’ vulnerable 4 ♠ contract. They double and you go down three tricks for minus 500 (you are not vulnerable). If the opponents can make plus 620 and East-West at all the other tables let them play it, you would have the lowest minus and thus the best score. The comparison aspect of pairs play means overtricks are important even in routine contracts. It’s not unusual for players to risk their contracts for that precious overtrick. Until you gain more experience, it’s best to concentrate on making your contract. Tomorrow: team games That’s what your chances are. You must lose two spades tricks, so you can’t afford to lose a heart trick. It’s time to use your imagination and place the opponents’ cards exactly as you need them and then play for that layout. It’s called a positive assumption. It is also called “thinking big” and “needing a miracle.” How would you place the opponents’ cards to make 5♦? A good start would be to assume that East has ♥K x x (18%), the only lie of the suit that doesn’t produce a loser. Even so, you would need to take two heart finesses, so you need two dummy entries. Well, wish upon another star. Wish that West has the ♦8 so you can lead a diamond to the 7 to gain a second dummy entry. And don’t forget to ruff the opening lead with the 9 (or an honor). You want to make sure you have two dummy entries in diamonds if West has the ♦8. Because finesses work only 50% of the time, you are now playing a 9% contract. As sad as this is, it is still better than playing a zero percent contract. When you are in a desperation contract, envision a winning layout and go for it! Play to make! Miracles happen. For example, consider the belowaverage scores on your convention card. Did your side declare or defend on those boards? Do the same checks for your good scores: offense or defense? Hand records can help with your postgame analysis. A review might help you avoid opening leads that give away tricks right off the bat or help you figure out how you should have played a particular contract to improve the result. Be sure to do your reviews as a partnership. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director. If the director determines the partnership has at least one substantially completed convention card but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign such penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the circumstances. PARTNERSHIP DESK continued from page 1 Dunn’s career goal had always been in law, so she signed up for a joint degree program in business and law. The Harvard Business School offered guaranteed admission – if she found a job in a field approved by the school. That led her to a two-year stint at Chase Manhattan Bank, where she prepped to be a loan officer dealing in forest products. After two years in New York City, Dunn returned to Boston and the business school. She completed that degree in 1982 and re-applied to Harvard Law School. “I got on the wait list and never got off,” she says. While waiting, she worked for the business school in minority admissions, traveling the country for a year recruiting talented students. That was followed by four and a half years working for the American/ National Can Co. in Greenwich CT. Dunn left the can company and went to work for Chemical Bank, now JP Morgan Chase, analyzing credit card for profitability. With her eye on a chief financial officer position, she decided she needed more experience in management. At a career-building seminar, she had an epiphany. “They told me to do what I wanted to do.” That was music to the ears of an aspiring attorney. Ten years after her first re-application to Harvard Law, Dunn tried again. This time, she stood out because of her experience and the fact that she was a decade older than most applicants. She started in 1991 and earned her law degree in three years. “I always wanted to be a lawyer,” she says. “It goes back to making things work with people and solving problems. Problem solving attracted me.” The law, she says, “is what I was meant to do. I’m like the trusted advisor who helps people get things done the right way.” Dunn worked for a law firm in New York City for six and a half years. She left when she realized she was not going to make partner in the firm. In 2001, she joined the Carver Bancorp staff in Harlem as general counsel. Three years later, she became general counsel at Harley-Davidson Financial Services, then worked as corporate counsel for the grocery chain Winn Dixie. In 2010, she semi-retired and returned to school, earning a degree in estate planning with the idea of going into business for herself. Dunn was living in Chicago, teaching and playing bridge, when she picked up a copy of the Bridge Bulletin and saw that ACBL was seeking an in-house attorney. “It’s the perfect combination of my passion for work and my passion for play,” she says. A bonus is the chance to reconnect with her family in the Memphis area. Her bridge career started in high school. Her mentor in bridge was a talented local player named Lila Dumas. “She liked me because I was smart,” Dunn recalls. “We used to play during free period.” Dunn also played in college, but her business career made it difficult to continue with the game until recently. Dunn is now back as a player and excited about the future. “I’m about to embark on another challenge, working with interesting and exciting people to help another business grow – and I love bridge.” Towner continued from page 1 Towner’s progress in Vegas online. After Towner’s victory in the WSOP on Tuesday night, he was so excited he couldn’t sleep. “I was so wired, I stayed up all night,” Towner said, who nevertheless booked a 6:30 a.m. flight to Long Beach to play in the KO. Towner and company went on to win the event, yet Towner’s golden run was not over. For an encore, the squad entered the Bracket 1 KO that began on Thursday and won that one, too. The four players topped the masterpoint leader list in Long Beach. “It was a magical week for me,” said Towner, who is in DC this week to play in the NABC. The best play in 4♥ might be to take diamond ruffs early, but declarer got greedy and played three rounds of spades at once, pitching dummy’s club. I could ruff and it looked obvious to play a club. When declarer ruffed and led a trump, the defenders can win and kill the discard with a fourth spade. Declarer has to ruff high, then play three rounds of diamonds, ruffing in hand. But whatever declarer does next, North can ruff high and return a trump, killing declarer’s ruff and leaving him with a diamond loser. For the record, Brad Coles did make the contract at trick six by playing on diamonds . He ruffed the third diamond and was overruffed. Back came a spade and Coles ruffed high in dummy. North pitched a diamond. This was the position: ♠— ♥A76 ♦Q ♣— ♠ — ♠— ♥ J 10 3 ♥84 ♦ J ♦— ♣ — ♣96 ♠8 ♥— ♦— ♣KQ7 Coles had a complete count of South hand as 5=1=2=5, so he ruffed a diamond low and when this could not be overruffed he gave up just one trump to claim his contract. Have you noticed the slip on defense? North should have played back a low trump at trick five for his partner to lead a fourth spade. North can later overruff a black suit and play back a trump to kill the second diamond ruff. It seems that he and his wife, Stephanie, played in the von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs on Friday, and the duo had an incredible set in the first session, scoring 65%. They were second overall. The second session, however, was not quite as good. The Alexanders managed to put together a 33% game to finish dead last in the session. They did not qualify. Teachers and club managers can gain a better understanding of the seminar and presentation details. The masterpoints that put him over the top were earned at duplicate club in his home town, Santa Barbara CA. Hollman took up duplicate in 2000 after scaling back his business activity. He had played country club bridge before taking lessons from the late Alan LeBendig and becoming hooked on duplicate. In winning the championship that qualified him for Grand LM, Hollman and Bruce Ferguson played with Brenda Keller and Dennis and Jerry Clerkin. In 2006, Hollman was captain of teams that made it to the semifinals of the Vanderbilt Knockout Teams and the Spingold Knockout Teams, two of ACBL’s premier events. ABTA announces Book of the Year The American Bridge Teachers Association named August Boehm’s Bridge Smarts – A Path to Bridge Success as the 2016 ABTA Shirley Silverman Book of the Year at its award ceremony Thursday evening. The annual award is named in honor of the late Silverman, a longtime ABTA member. 2016 winner is Richard Braunstein of Lancaster PA. Braunstein’s tip encourages developing players to improve their counting skills when they’re dummy by counting suits and high-card totals from the other hands. George Jacobs, who frequently acts as emcee for ABTA events, was named an Honorary Member of the ABTA for his years of support to the organization. Boehm, of New York City, was selected as the winner from among five nominees. The ABTA also announced the winner of its annual Applebasket Award, given to a teacher who provides a memorable teaching tip for students. The Can you Learn Bridge in A Day? Yes! Use of the bidding box— Alerts and Announcements When using bidding boxes, the ACBL requires that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the same time. When making an Announcement, use the Announcement word (such as “transfer”) and tap the Alert strip at the same time. A player who Alerts or Announces a bid must make sure his opponents are aware that an Alert or Announcement has been made. Playing in an NABC+ pairs game? Buy your entry early! In an effort to speed up the start of all NABC+ pairs events – which require additional time for proper seeding – the ACBL asks participants to please buy their entries at least 15 minutes before game time. This is especially true if you expect to be a seeded pair. Audrey Grant’s seminar aids practicing bridge instructors. Email us Got a hand you just have to share or a nice story? We’d love to see it. The Daily Bulletin has its own email address: [email protected]. You’ll also find it on the front page under the “Daily Bulletin” between the date and the editors’ names. This email address won’t be checked with any regularity when the NABC is not in session, so please continue to use our office email addresses for nontournament–related correspondence. Page 14 Forget the “rules,” listen to the bidding Stephen Jackson and Susan Jackson were the only pair to bid and make slam on this deal from the second qualifying session of the Young 0-1500 Pairs: Dlr: East ♠A9 Vul: E-W ♥KJ53 Bd: 22 ♦K65 ♣Q973 ♠ 10 ♥ A 10 9 8 4 ♦ Q J 10 9 4 2 ♣A West North East South Susan Stephen 2♠ (1) 4♦ (2) Pass 4♠ Pass 5♣ Pass 6♥ All Pass (1) Weak. (2) Leaping Michaels: diamonds and hearts. North-South arrived in 6♥, and the success of the contract hinges on finding the trump queen. East led to ♠K to North’s ace, and declarer played a trump to dummy’s ace, both defenders following. When a low heart is played from dummy, West follows low. Should declarer finesse or play for the drop? Blindly using guidelines such as “Eight ever, nine never” is a rather lazy approach to thinking about suit layouts such as this. The bidding tells declarer that East has spade length, meaning there are less available spaces in the East hand for heart length, making the finesse a more attractive proposition. More precisely, the 2♠ preempt suggests that East has six spades and that West, therefore, has four. This two-card difference means that declarer should take the hook in trumps. That’s exactly the line Susan took, and she was rewarded with this layout: ♠A9 ♥KJ53 ♦K65 ♣Q973 ♠ 8 7 6 4 ♠KQJ532 ♥ Q 7 2 ♥6 ♦ A 8 ♦73 ♣ 10 8 4 2 ♣KJ65 ♠ 10 ♥ A 10 9 8 4 ♦ Q J 10 9 4 2 ♣A After drawing trumps, declarer conceded the ♦A and claimed. Electronic Device Policy 1.11.1 The electronic device policy at NABCs allows players to bring electronic devices into the playing area. Except for health-related equipment and/or by permission of the Director-in-Charge of the tournament, all such devices must be inoperable and turned off. 1.11.2 Any device capable of either sending or receiving electronic signals must not be visible during the session. 1.11.3 This policy applies to all pairs, team members, captains, coaches, play recorders and kibitzers with the exception of those persons designated by the ACBL. This policy is in force throughout any actual playing session or segment of play. 1.11.4 A violation of the policy will result in an automatic penalty pursuant to Law 91 of the Laws of Duplicate Bridge of one full board at matchpoints/ board-a-match scoring, 12 IMPs at IMP pairs/ knockouts or 20% maximum of VPs available per match in a Swiss team event for the first offense. A second offense will result in disqualification from the event for the pair/team. Kibitzers violating this policy will be required to leave the playing area for the remainder of that session. Game Sponsors and Tributes Today is sponsored by the Krauss Investment Group (KIG) of Janney Montgomery Scott. KIG has named games that include “401K,” “Retirement,” “Taxation,” “College Planning,” “Planning,” “Roth IRA,” Phil Krauss, Rusty Krauss and David Dansby. Have you made a Retirement Safety Play? What about Tax Planning – have you tax-optimized your savings, distributions and legacy? With college tuition skyrocketing, do you need advice on College Planning? Phil Krauss, David Dansby and Rusty Krauss of the Krauss Investment Group can help you answer these and other important questions. Look for them and their associate Emma Beck at the Tournament Registration desk to set up a time to review your financial plan. The Bette Dudka Friday-Sunday Morning Side Game Series Sponsored by Betty Schuler in memory of Bette Bette Dudka was a long-time volunteer in the DC area, acting as NVBA Unit President, NVBA Recorder, District 6 Secretary, and President of the Mid-Atlantic Bridge Conference (MABC). She also represented District 6 on the ACBL Board of Governors for many years. Her favorite role was as NVBA Sectional Tournament Chair and MABC Regional Tournament Chair, positions she held for almost 20 years. She was a Member of the ACBL Goodwill Committee, and a Gold Life Master at the time of her passing in June 2006.
