Slight Indulgence presents Tastes & Treasures of Southern Italy featuring: The Amalfi Coast, Calabria &Sicily June 19 – 30, 2013 Hosted by JC & Suzy Warman Suzy and I are extremely excited to be planning our third international Slight Indulgence wine trip to such a beautiful, dramatic and culturally rich part of Italy. This will be our second trip to Italy and after experiencing the North in 2010, we are certainly looking forward to our next “indulgence” in Southern Italy & Sicily, especially in the company of such great friends. Calabria is special to us because it is the birthplace of so many of our ancestors. Our visit to San Giovanni in Fiore will provide insight to our own heritage, customs and culture and that should be amazing! This is also an area of Italy that is less traveled and that just adds to its appeal as a hidden gem! We begin our journey by traveling to fashionable and glamorous Sorrento, Capri, Positano & the Amalfi coast where we will enjoy the sights, culinary delights and, of course, the local wines. Afterwards, we continue to Calabria for a “little bit of West Virginia” in this culturally and gastronomically rich area and will enjoy wine tasting along the way. Next, we are off to Sicily to visit 2 distinct areas of the island and experience their wine Renaissance. Wine has been produced in Sicily for 4,000 years! We are also so pleased that Giuseppe Tarzia, whose family is from Calabria, will again travel with us as tour director throughout our journey. Please join us next summer for our 2013 Slight Indulgence adventure: “Tastes & Treasures of Southern Italy and Sicily”! ~~~JC & Suzy Tastes and Treasures of Southern Italy & Sicily Customized I T I N E R A R Y Day 1 Wed. June. 19 Depart USA: Evening departure from Pittsburgh with connecting flights to Naples, Italy. Meals and refreshments served on board. Day 2 Thu June 20: Arrive Naples – Buongiorno and welcome to Italy. After passport control and claiming our luggage, we will be met by our Tour Director and proceed by private motorcoach transfer to our hotel in Sorrento. En route we visit the slopes of the Mt Vesuvius volcano. We are planning a stop in Pompeii to discover the art, history, folklore and archaeology and visit the ruins of the ancient city. Pompeii was rediscovered approx 1700 years after it was covered by ashes during the eruption of Vesuvius in the year 79 AD. Afterwards we continue our drive along the spectacular coast road to beautiful Sorrento. Perched high on cliffs overlooking the Bay of Naples and Capri, Sorrento will be our home for the next 3 nights. The balance of the day is at leisure. Tonight we experience a special welcome dinner at a local Neapolitan restaurant. Overnight: Sorrento (D) Day 3 Fri June 21: Capri - This morning we visit the world renowned Isle of Capri. We board a hydrofoil that will take us to the main harbor of Capri. We will take the famous “funicolare” to the upper town for a walking tour. Here we will visit the Augustus Gardens overlooking the Faraglioni. Enjoy the high end shopping district and narrow alleyways overlooking the Mediterranean sea…beautiful! (weather permitting the blue grotto or island cruise can be arranged through your tour director) Return to Sorrento later this afternoon with leisure time to explore on your own. Tonight enjoy dinner together at a local restaurant. Overnight: Sorrento (B,D) Day 4 Sat. June 22: Positano/Revello/Sorento- Today, the spectacular Amalfi coast awaits. Our first stop is world-famous Positano with its winding alleyways, shops and clifftop vistas. We continue to nearby Amalfi where we will visit the city center and admire the mosaics decorating the facade of St. Andrews Basilica. Lunch today, will be in the picturesque village of Ravello overlooking the Amalfi coast that inspired Wagner’s Opera “Parsifal”. You will want to have your camera ready for shots of some of the most spectacular scenery today! Late this afternoon, we return to Sorrento where our tour director will assist with a selection of typical restaurants. Afterwards, we board the ferry to cross from the straits of Messina to reach Taormina, Sicily. Late afternoon, check into our hotel. Overnight: Taormina (B/L) Day 8 Thu June 26: Taormina – Taormina is a wonderful town and our hotel offers a great view of Mount Etna. Our culinary experience today will start with visiting and shopping at local market then followed by a “Typical Sicilian cooking class session” We will enjoy our lunch which we cooked and shared together as well as the local wine.
