Steven Tan, Chairman of MIRA giving a welcome speech at the Awards
Helping a PLC achieve a fair valuation for its securities traded stock exchange is the ultimate aim for IR practitioners.
This is in line with the tagline of this year’s awards event “Achieving Fair Valuation Through IR”. Chairperson of MIRA,
Steven Tan said in his welcome speech, “As we gather to celebrate the “stars” of the IR industry who have truly
demonstrated some of the best practices of the industry, we believe that these examples of good corporate
governance will motivate and drive more PLCs to adopt and ultimately increase the rate of e ective IR campaigns.
With IR holding a prominent role in seamless communication between PLCs and investors, this is de䑉쀀nitely the time
to go the extra mile to generate added value for companies as well as their stakeholders.”
Dato’ Tajuddin Atan, CEO Bursa Malaysia Bhd commented in his speech, “The winners have raised the bar across
the board, which have a positive impact towards the company’s business model, growth prospect and corporate
governance.”
In his keynote address, Tuan Ahmad Fairuz Zainol Abidin, Deputy Chief Executive of Securities Commission Malaysia
(SC) concurred, stating that investors who are looking for stability in returns tend to gravitate towards companies
with a good governance record, a track record of consistent earnings with potential for growth and/or a favourable
dividend policy. “Valuation is the key, if not sole, principle in guiding an investor’s investment decision,” he said
adding that the Malaysian capital market is a major source of 䑉쀀nancing with RM90 billion raised through the
primary market in 2015, of which RM86 billion was raised through bonds while RM4 billion was raised via initial
public o erings (IPOs). The secondary equity market raised an additional RM17 billion.
An Indispensable Role
The role of IR becomes crucial during a market slowdown. When times are bad, IR will be at the front lines
explaining the extent of the negative impact and what the company is doing to counter it. This means answering
numerous queries from many investors, analysts and fund managers. “It’s about being consistently transparent. If
companies only share good news and hide the bad, it translates to bad governance. This will erode investor
con䑉쀀dence. The market understands that every business goes through economic cycles. Listed companies need to
accept that share price 䊆uctuations goes in line with it,” Tan explained.
Due to the prominent nature of the IR in a PLC, the role should ideally be occupied by a senior executive who has
been with the company since its early days, according to May Tan, an advisor for MIRA and a veteran in IR. “When
these IR practitioners start out as juniors, they must be made to feel part of the 䑉쀀rm and work closely with the top
management especially the CEO. Only then will they be able to convey the company’s message e ectively to the
investing community.”

Commenting on the Awards, Andrew Heng, partner of Baker Tilly Monteiro Heng, the sixth largest accounting and
business advisory 䑉쀀rm in Malaysia and the main sponsor of the MIRA IR Awards, said, “Sime Darby’s impressive
performance is certainly a benchmark every PLCs can aim for. Of course, they are one of the few companies with a
large and well-run in-house IR team. Smaller cap companies can start o with outsourcing IR to capable consultants
and when they reach a size say, high mid cap onwards, they can seriously consider developing their own IR
department.” Heng observed that where previously IR was only practiced when companies were raising funds
through listing exercises, it has shown a healthy progress in building long-term relationships with stakeholders
thanks to the e orts by Bursa Malaysia and SC. “This goes a long way in re䊆ecting the PLC’s true share price and fair
value.” Heng also emphasised the key role that CEOs and CFOs play in IR, “Without commitment from the CEO and
CFO, IR could not be e ectively executed. As such, we applaud MIRA’s inclusion of the “Best CEO for IR” and “Best
CFO for IR”awards.”

This year, one Micro Cap company stood out among the rest, a testament that even Micro Cap PLCs can practice
excellence in IR as well. The company is none other than AWC Berhad, who was awarded “Best Micro Cap Company
in IR”.

Nasdaq OMX (NOMX) was engaged to conduct the 6th IR survey, with over 1,500 asset managers and investment
professionals at brokerage 䑉쀀rms participating in the poll. These companies were polled under di erent categories
of market capitalisation, namely, Micro Cap, Small Cap, Mid Cap and Large Cap. The 䑉쀀nal results of the survey were
based on veri䑉쀀ed substantial responses to provide validity to the 䑉쀀ndings as well as to enhance the value to votes
from the most in䊆uential buy-side and sell-side institutions.
MIRA IR Awards were organised with the support of Bursa Malaysia, with Esente Communcations (M) Sdn Bhd, a
leading Malaysian IR and public relations (PR) 䑉쀀rm as the o cial event partner. Other sponsors include Boardroom
Corporate Services (KL) Sdn Bhd, ShareInvestor Malaysia and 7-Eleven Malaysia Holdings Bhd, Astro Awani Network
Sdn Bhd, Focus Malaysia and Smart Investor magazine.
Tan concluded, “In the past, the simplistic objective behind the practice of IR was to increase the company’s share
price over the short-term. Today, measures of success are di erent with companies seeking to build long-term
relationships with their stakeholders. Ultimately continuous engagement is key to unlocking fair valuation for a PLC,
and it is IR that forms the most viable platform for communication between PLCs and the investment community
towards conveying key messages, i.e., key corporate developments, both past and present, as well as corporate
governance and dividend policies which are in place.
