10th Blind Leading The Blind Charity Walk
In 1990, Lions Club established SightFirst, a US$143.5 million global initiative to fight the major causes of
preventable and reversible blindness. The unprecedented program joins Lions Club volunteers with
blindness prevention experts and organizations and governments. Since its establishment, SightFirst has:
•
•
•
•
Provided more than 3.4 million cataract surgeries
Built or expanded 154 eye hospitals
Supported more than 47 million treatments to prevent blindness
Improved eye care in 78 countries around the world.
Lions Club of Petaling Jaya organized the 10th Blind Leading the Blind Charity Walk on June 16th 2013. The
blind or visually impaired will lead the sighted but blindfolded on the 3km walk, thus giving the sighted the
opportunity to experience blindness, to value sight and to appreciate teamwork, to have fun and of course to
assist the underprivileged.
Lions Club Petaling Jaya SightFirst chairman, Mr. Mak Siew Fong explained - "During the event, walkers take
off in pairs, one completely blindfolded and the other leading". Mr. Mak continued by saying - “The journey is
one huge experience for those gifted with sight. The loss of sight means one has to rely on your other
senses, and all the fears of the unknown can be disorientating to you”.
This year, Tokio Marine Insurans (Malaysia) Berhad (TMIM) donated RM3,000 and representatives from
TMIM Sports Club joined in on the charity walk. It was a successful event, drawing more than 1,600 from all
walks of life and TMIM is proud to be a part of such a meaningful event.
In appreciation of our participation, Lions Club of Petaling Jaya presented 10 complimentary copies of Tun
Hussein Onn Nation Eye Hospital Free Eye Check Up vouchers.
