The essence of all things regal, Temenggong derives its name from an ancient Malay title of
nobility, usually bestowed upon the head of defence. Responsible for the safety of the
monarch as well as in charge of the armed forces, the Temenggong reigned supreme over
peace and harmony as well as supervised the smooth flow of commerce.
The historical Johor Sultanate had strong ancestral links to the Temenggong lineage, founded
by Sultan Abu Bakar who was a Temenggong prior to his ascension to the throne.
