day today it’s going to be.
Not only celebrating our 500th home and away match, but also bringing
together our past players, club legends, committee members and supporters to this amazing local derby against our rivals Seaford in the

Club Future Plans
In August this year, we will finally receive our long awaited new training
lights being installed to compliment the club’s extension on the rear park
which will see another training park established along with another playing ground since the original lighting was installed 34 years ago. This
will enable the club to further expand.
While in 2016 we will also see an overhaul of the clubrooms, change facilities, storage and canteen. We are currently working with Council on
the plans and monies have been set aside within the future Council budget.
Finally I would like to thank all Peninsula Strikers Players, especially our
Veterans team, most of them contributing to the club over many years—
lead and managed by Steve Keenan. With special mention to long time
player and coach Russell Black for his contribution to the club over many
years.
I would also like to thank those members, life members and ex players
who make up McClelland Golf Club—your contribution is noted.
On this the 500th game it would be resolute of me not to mention the contribution of Mr. Clayton Lee for 30 years of outstanding service to the
club.
A final thank you to all those who have rallied and helped put today together. To my coaching staff and players, I wish you luck for today’s
game—wear the shirt with pride and GO STRIKERS!

President.
Steve Taylor
Steve Taylor was a man who became synonymous with the local clubs
over a number of decades. Arriving from Newcastle in the UK in the mid
1970's he sought a team to have a kick with. This took him to the then
British based Chelsea Soccer Club.
Soon after, he moved his playing stocks to Seaford where he soon took
over the senior coach role (with Harry Hamill), becoming Seaford's first
coach in the FFV, beginning a life long affinity with the club. This set the
ground work for a rise up the FFV league ranks. A number of years later a
phone call from Tony Hall saw a stint at the then Skye Rovers/Frankston
United, saving the club from relegation. Thereby creating another strong
connection with another local club.
From coaching, Steve then developed into a renowned club physio (mind
you he still never lost the ability to give you a piece of timely advice).
Stints back at Seaford, in his physio role, saw a League/Cup double in
1989 and numerous promotions under Terry Hargreaves. As a coaching mentor for Glyn Gough the Reserves won the league in 1991.
A move back to Strikers working as a physio under coach Russell Black
saw League Championship success. His reputation to get the very best
of his players (physically and mentally) saw a move to Casey Comets
with Dale White and Andy McKenna and more success.
Steve also had an impact for Frankston Pines as their game day physio
when they lifted the State League Cup in 1991. Despite the club success it was Steve's role as a mentor, motivator, coach and most importantly was a friend, that was his lasting impact.
Steve was also involved in a number of State Junior squads over the
years under the then State Coach (former FFV President) Tony
Dunkerley.
Ask anyone from the Peninsula football family who was involved from
the 1980'a through to the 2000's, and it will be Stevie Taylor that is
the common theme. His impact was way beyond the parameters of
just football. A man the football family will eternally miss.

Results in the past between Strikers and Seaford Utd have been very close
for both 1sts and Reserves will today be any different
In 1985 we finished 8th in the League. At the same time the committee was having talks
with CARRUM COWBOYS due to our Juniors outgrowing BALLARTO ROAD, a
compromise was reached whereby some of SKYE ROVER’s juniors would play matches at
McCLELLAND DRIVE, despite the fact that we spent over $1000 making a new pitch for
the Under 7's and 8's.
FRANKSTON COUNCIL still sympathetic to SKYE’s needs gave the club a
completely new Reserve at ROBINSONS ROAD, the Juniors would have a new home
when it was completed.
Later in the year JOHN SMITH approached SKYE asking would they be prepared to withdraw from the BAYSIDE LEAGUE and go into the VSF PROVISIONAL LEAGUE
playing all home games at McClelland Drive.
There was a great danger that the magnificent complex at McCLELLAND DRIVE could
have been lost to soccer, CARRUM COWBOYS had done a great job in keeping soccer
going there but money became a big issue.
The two parties came together and agreed in the interest of the round ball sport to leave the
BAYSIDE competition.
So in 1986 we joined the V.S.F, in PROVISIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION 4 it was not the
best of starts with us losing our first game 6-1 against LALOR we finished the season in
11th spot with the Reserves in 6th.
1987 was a similar season with the First finishing in 10th spot and the Reserves nearly
snatching the title but finishing in 2nd spot.
In 1988 we joined with DINGLEY UNITED to form DINGLEY/SKYE UNITED and at the
same time jumped to the PROVISIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 with us finishing in 11th
position and the Reserves 4th spot.
DINGLEY/SKYE UNITED started off 1989 by becoming FRANKSTON UNITED a
change brought on by structural change within the Club coupled with the acceptance of us
being part of the CITY OF FRANKSTON, we finished in 12th spot and the Reserves 8th
spot.
1990 under the watchful eyes of MIKE BEVIS as coach saw our best year to date in the
VSF with the First XI squad finishing in 2nd spot only 1 point behind SOUTH
SPRINGVALE and the Reserves in 4th spot.
During the 1991 the team was promoted to PROVISIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 and the
Seniors took advantage of the floodlights at ROBBINSON's ROAD playing friendlies
against other clubs in the area, with the First XI finishing 3rd and the Reserves 4th.
The 1992 season saw the First XI and Reserve XI finishing in 4th place
On the field in 1993 the First XI finished 3rd and the Reserve XI brought home the First
VSF LEAGUE TITLE winning the competition on goal difference from EAST GEELONG
During the latter part of 1993 FRANKSTON UNITED Seniors and Juniors began regular
talks with near neighbours KARINGAL. An approach was made to FRANKSTON
UNITED considering the excellent facilities they had, both Clubs saw a need to develop
soccer further on the PENINSULA, each Club had reached a point in time where a merger
was
the
most
sensible
idea.
A chapter would close in both Club's and a new one would open. A decision to play Senior
games at McCLELLAND DRIVE and all Junior teams at BALLAM PARK was reached,
the ROBINSON’s ROAD complex in the LAKEWOOD ESTATE would be left to the
Softball club and any other sporting organisation that used it during the winter months.
Skye/Dingley Skye United/Frankston United History
In 1978 the BAYSIDE SOCCER LEAGUE was formed SKYE seniors
became inaugural members of this league. Matches were played at SKYE RESERVE,
hence taking the title SKYE as the club name. With the club colours being GREEN, the
shorts were WHITE, and the socks WHITE also with bands of EMERALD and ROYAL
BLUE.
Skye had a good first year with finishing 3rd on the ladder, losing the Semi Final of the
Cup Navy 4-1 and having the Top goal scorer MIKE PARRY for the league.
1979 saw a junior section formed and entered into the VSF competition, due to the BAYSIDE LEAGUE being considered a rebel league (it is still not affiliated to the now renamed
VFF),
the
Junior
section
played
as
SKYE
ROVERS
Once again on the field we had a great season finishing 2nd on the table and then defeating
CHELSEA in 3MP Cup 3-1. MIKE PARRY continuing his form by winning the BAYSIDE Top Goal Scorer Award
It became apparent that some accommodation was needed at BALLARTO ROAD, MIKE
PARRY managed to purchase an on site A V JENNINGS hut as a temporary measure,
CRANBOURNE COUNCIL began building official dressing rooms later that season, these
would be shared by CRICKET, TENNIS and of course SOCCER.
During the next two years the growth of the Juniors exploded, SKYE RESERVE was a
natural bush setting reserve and just couldn’t cope with so many boys & girls playing soccer.
1980 to date was our best season with us finishing 1st on the table and again we won the
3MP Cup beating the NAVY 2-1 and you guessed it MIKE PARRY again won the top goal
scoring award.
1981 saw the new clubrooms completed which was gratifying, rooms now to change in and
a
canteen.
A grant was applied for from the MINISTRY OF SPORTS and RECREATION for the
installation of floodlights. ANGUS MORRISON and HARRY SALISBURY installed the
lights
for
us
at
no
personal
cost
to
the
Club.
The 1st XI finished 2nd and the Reserve XI 3rd with the 1st XI making the 3MP Cup Semi
Finals but losing on penalties to CHELSEA. And yes Top goal scorer for the 3rd season
was
MIKE
PARRY
with
46
goals.
FRANKSTON CITY who played at McCLELLAND DRIVE a short distance away, fell
victim to money problems and were forced to withdraw from the VICTORIAN STATE
LEAGUE.
Another BAYSIDE Team with the novel name CARRUM COWBOYS kept soccer going
at the complex, however the committee of SKYE considered that perhaps McCLELLAND
DRIVE could be just what it needed to accommodate its huge
junior
strength.
In 1982 the 1st XI finished 3rd and the 2nd XI 3rd with MIKE PARRY again
winning the Top Goal Scorers award with 27 goals.
1983 saw the 1st XI and 2nd XI finishing 4th and the 1sts making the Quarter
Finals only to lose 2-1 to PARKBOURNE.
It became a tangled web, FRANKSTON COUNCIL was approached sympathetic to
SKYE’s needs, however CARRUM COWBOYS under the leadership of JOHN
(SMUDGER) SMITH would not give away McCLELLAND DRIVE without a fight.
In 1984 on the field the 1st XI finished 7th and the 2nd XI finished 5th.

Karingal United Soccer Club History
Karingal United Soccer Club was formed in 1967 under the auspices of Karingal Sports
Association, a now defunct body that looked after sporting requirements of the residents of
Karingal. Junior teams were entered for the first time in the 1968 season in what was then
known as the Southern Region, embracing teams from the Peninsula and Dandenong and
northward to the Brighton area. A large number of these boys had never played soccer before, but by the end of the season Karingal achieved its first success when the Under 12
team won the local W.Rigby Builders' Cup.
The club grew rapidly in those early years and became very successful, both on and off the
field, winning many League championships in different age groups as well as Cup competition. By 1970 teams were entered in every age group from Under Seven to Under Seventeen
and Karingal United were presented with the Best Club Award by the Southern Regional
Committee for the way in which they have done so much to promote the game of soccer
amongst the Juniors.
The suggestion of running a Senior team was raised for the first time in 1971 when we had
an Under Seventeen side with nowhere to go the following year. It was again raised at the
end of 1972 and finally a side was entered in the then District League South in 1974. We
did not set the soccer world alight during our years in this competition but we did find ourselves a comfortable, regular position around the middle of the table. Coaches and players
were hard to keep in those days and each successive year usually found us with a new coach
and
almost
a
new
team.
Our fortunes changed in 1977 when we were invited to apply for membership to the Provisional League where we stayed in 2nd Division until 1981. That year we were fortunate to
gain the services of Nigel Bevis as coach and our Seniors had their most successful year to
date, finishing 3rd. Due to a vacancy we were promoted to 1st Division. 1982 saw us with a
much changed team with an accent on youth and we again finished in 3rd position. A reorganisation of the League structure enabled us to apply for and gain promotion to 4th Division of the Metropolitan League in 1983 where we finished in 6th position. Once again at
the end of 1983 there was a reorganisation of the Leagues, Karingal applied for and gained
promotion to 3rd Division finishing the year in 7th spot. Promoted 5 times in 11 years without finishing 1st or 2nd. A somewhat unusual record.
1984 saw us have an outstanding first half of the season with Nigel Bevis at the helm building up a Reserve and Senior side which have more than held their own in the 3rd Division.
The second have of the season though saw us fall away into mediocrity and performances
well below par. This was partly due to injuries, suspensions, work commitments etc causing
lack of enthusiasm after losses and low depth. Highlights were that we made the last 16 in
the Docherty Cup and last 8 in the Metro. Cup. Added to these achievements the youngest
Reserve side we have ever fielded finishing 3rd in their League.
1985 saw a change in coach and our most disappointing year to date with us finishing last in
the 3rd Division and seeing us
relegated back to the 4th Division, the
position on the ladder was mainly due
to a lack of experience in the Senior
team, a lack of numbers in the playing
staff and a lack of professionalism.
1986 saw the reappointment of Nigel Bevis who immediately signed 8-10 new players to
bring some extra experience and to provide competition for places and atmosphere. The
year in whole could be summed up as the year of the draws with 12 in the season many of
which we should have turned into wins, overall though we can be happy with our performances, if not the results. One of the main objectives of the season was to get the club
back to its original stature, and we can feel that this has been achieved.
1987 saw a disappointing year for Karingal narrowly escaping relegation, while off the
field a mismanagement of club funds saw the club go into a monetary deficit.
After our great start in 1988 where we held top spot for nine weeks, things only got worse
after that with us finishing 2nd last and only winning 5 and drawing 4 games for the year.
Once again though injuries, suspensions and unavailability’s took their toll and resulted in
a very disjointed situation. The Reserve side made the final 8 in the Harry Armstrong Reserves Cup, and the club was granted a Permit to build a large Covered Spectator area onto
the Clubrooms facing the main pitch
1989 would have to be ranked as one of the best for a few seasons, after 14 games we had
more points, more wins and more goals than we achieved in the whole 22 games on season
'88. Equally as heartening this year was the performance of the Reserves, a good group of
young and older players, a good blend and a lot of promise for the future.
1990 saw the appointment of Lou Kastner as Senior Coach although the season wasn't
great with only one win in the second half of the season, a 10th spot finish, with the commitment nowhere near good enough, and once again a shocking run of injuries
1991 saw the club finish 4th, the best position it has reached since 1982 (3rd), it saw the
youngest ever First team fielded by Karingal United, including six teenagers in the squad,
which resulted in a lot of competition for a place in the First Team squad.
Lou Kastner was again coach in 1992 with the boys finishing middle table which was a
little disappointing for a team which showed so much promise last season. And an extension to the clubroom finally got underway and was finished before the end of the season.
1993 on the field once again was very disappointing with us finishing 3rd last, at the same
time though we started having talks with Frankston United with 3 main aims 1) to unify
fragmented soccer interests in the Frankston are; 2) Provide better facilities for members
and their families, and 3) Open the opportunity of advancement for the club. A meeting
between both clubs was held on the 6th October when a decision to amalgamate was made
by majority vote. The combination of both teams would form a new team called Frankston
Strikers Soccer Club.
