History of the Racine
Zoological Gardens
Photo courtesy of Ryan M. Rudie, AIA - Butterfield, Rudie & Seitz Architects, Inc.
The Racine Zoo was established in 1923 at Island Park. Its
first home, however, was quite temporary and in 1925 the Zoo
moved to its present 25-acre location on the shores of Lake
Michigan. The Racine Zoological Society was incorporated in
1924 as a financial support organization for the Zoo.
The first bear dens were built in 1928 under the sponsorship
of the Journal News carriers. Housing the other animals
became exceedingly difficult during the winter months and
many of them were shipped to warmer climates, with new
replacements purchased the following spring. It became
increasingly obvious that a primary building was needed as a
winter shelter. Construction of the Vanishing Kingdom building
began in 1936 as a WPA project and finished in 1939 —
 that
structure still stands today.
5
©Racine Zoological Society 2009
In the early 1990s the Zoological
Society undertook a capital campaign
to renovate the Vanishing Kingdom.
The initiative was a great success
and today the complex serves as a
showcase for ongoing conservation,
animal welfare and education efforts
in Racine and around the world.
In 2002 the Charles and Jennifer Johnson Land of the Giants,
featuring black rhinos and the first interactive giraffe exhibit
in the Upper Midwest, was completed. Three years later, new
or renovated exhibits were unveiled for Andean bears, West
Caucasian turs, meerkats and African penguins.
In 2008 a new entrance complex, new restaurant and
exhibit highlighting the wildlife of Australia, called Walkabout
Creek, opened. The following year saw the debut of the
Norco Manufacturing, Inc. Aviary, the Upper Midwest’s first
interactive aviary.
In 2010, the Zoo was thrilled to announce the Pride of Racine
presented by Johnson Bank. Born in March, the male and
female lions were the second litter born to Elsa and Aslan. The
ever-evolving animal collection welcomed a zebra and a fossa
in addition to a sloth, designated for educational purposes.
Additionally, the Benstead Discovery Center welcomed a
Mexican red kneed tarantula and an emperor scorpion.
The Racine Zoo is a an accredited member of the Association
of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and the World Association of
Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA).

The Rippingtons
July 20th
Fans that have followed Russ Freeman
and the Rippingtons for any stretch of
time over the past quarter century know
the versatile award winning and Grammy
nominated guitarist/composer, and
producer has long had a penchant for
naming songs and albums after exotic
places (Aruba, Kenya, Morocco,
Weekend in Monaco, Sahara, etc).
In recent years, Freeman has noticed that
the Rippingtons’ fan base has increased
exponentially, as the group’s longtime admirers transfer their passion for
the music to their children. Several Rippingtons albums have been inspired
by Freeman’s travels, and collectively, they have formed the life soundtrack
for hundreds of thousands of contemporary jazz fans worldwide for a
quarter century.
The titles of each hit Ripps album has often reflected Freeman’s deep
wanderlust, whether he had actually been to the places he wrote about or
was just dreaming of them in musical terms. These include Kilimanjaro,
Tourist in Paradise, Welcome to the St. James Club, Weekend In Monaco,
Live in L.A., Sahara, Brave New World and Live Across America. In
2006, the band celebrated two decades of instrumental magic with the
Rippingtons 20th Anniversary, a remarkable CD/DVD package that included
a CD of all new Ripps music and a DVD featuring a colorful retrospective as
well as exciting videos from over the years.
On their latest Peak Records album, Russ Freeman and the Rippingtons
take their lucky fans on a trip of a lifetime to Cote D’Azur. Traveling with
them is their trademark jazz cat, by artist Bill Mayer, who again graces the
CD cover art. Next time out, who knows? Freeman’s musical passport still
has a lot of open space to be stamped, and the journey continues!

Joey DeFrancesco Trio
August 3rd
Joey DeFrancesco comes from a musical
family. His Grandfather Joseph DeFrancesco
(his name sake) was a reed man. And of
course his father “Papa” John DeFrancesco
is a fine jazz organist in his own right. At
the age of four Joey began taking a strong
interest in the organ. By the time he was five,
he was playing Jimmy Smith songs verbatim.
As the years went on his interest and love for
the organ and music grew stronger. From
the ages of 5-10 his father would bring him to
his own gigs and let him sit in. At 10 years of
age he began to play in a Band in Philadelphia,
which featured legendary players Hank Mobley on Tenor Saxophone and “Philly”
Joe Jones on the Drums. At 16 he signed an exclusive recording contract with
Columbia Records, releasing his first record “All Of Me” at 17. This record was
single handedly responsible for the great resurgence of the Hammond sound in
popular music. Also in his 17th year he was called on by the great Miles Davis to join
his band and toured all over Europe. At 18, Joey began touring with his own quartet.
At 22, John McLaughlin called him along with drummer Dennis Chambers, to form
the group the “Free Sprits”. This band toured extensively for four years. Joey has
been around the world and back dozens of times with his own trio, but also playing
with some of the greatest musicians in the world such as, Benny Golson, James
Moody, Steve Gadd, Elvin Jones, Jimmy Cobb, George Benson, Pat Martino, John
Scofield, Joe Lovano, just to name a few.
He has won the the Down Beat Critics and Readers poll ever year since 2002, as
well as Jazz Journalist award and countless others. In 2004 Joey was nominated
for a Grammy for his record “Falling In Love Again” which featured the great
actor Joe Pesci on vocals(AKA Joe Doggs). At the present moment Joey not
only continues to tour with his trio which includes Byron Landham on drums and
Paul Bollenback on guitar, but he’s also touring with David Sanborn. After several
releases as a leader, he’s very excited about his next release which features the
music of Michael Jackson, entitled “Never Can Say Goodbye.” Joey also is involved
along with Elvio Previati in the development of a marvelous new organ (KeyB organ)
which replicates the sound of a classic Tonewheel organ perfectly. The company
is an Italian company call DLQ. Joey also loves teaching and sharing his knowledge
about music and the organ.

Chieli Minucci & Special EFX
featuring Lao Tizer & Karen Briggs
August 17th
Guitarist, composer and arranger Chieli Minucci is the leader of
the Grammy-nominated jazz-fusion group Special EFX, which he
co-founded with the late George Jinda in 1984. A major force on
the jazz and world music scene for 25 years, Special EFX’s newest
release, “Without You” is a diverse collection of jazz-fusion, world
rhythms and the effortlessly flowing guitar artistry that Chieli
(Key-eh-lee) is known for. A true sound-tapestry, blending layers of
sound and harmonic texture, “Without You” is an instant classic.
Special EFX is one of the most prominent world fusion groups of
the era. During the course of the band’s phenomenal rise to the top
of the jazz charts, they released 25 CDs, including Chieli’s 8 solo
releases and a live concert DVD. Seminal songs like “Daybreak,”
“Cruise Control,” “Bella” and “Seduction” were among their vibrant
and exciting sound to the next level on its new “Without You” release,
which encompasses diverse and eclectic sounds ranging from jazz
fusion to world beat, pop vocals and rock-tinged arrangements.

As a family company,
we work hard to create
innovative, quality products for
other families. We also strive to be
responsible corporate citizens, helping
protect the planet’s resources, giving back to
local communities and being a great place to
work. Maybe that’s why families have trusted our
products for over five generations.
