President’s Message:
by Simon Cooper
F
or this issue I wanted to talk about two things,
the first is our generous team of volunteers and
the second is our Street Survival driving program for teens.
Let’s start with the volunteers. Without their help the Chapter couldn’t
put on all the events that we offer each year. Our event organizers put in
countless hours to make these events possible and hundreds of you pitch
in to make them run efficiently. The organizers and the workers are all
club members just like you, but they give back by volunteering their time
to support Chapter events. Often it is because they personally enjoy the
event and want to see it continue. It’s interesting that almost all of our
volunteers start out as participants and make the mistake (ha!) of asking if
they can help. Our Autocross team is a great example of a cohesive team of
six people that run one of the best programs in the North East, attended by
well over 100 drivers. This team has undergone changes recently with one
of the co-chairs moving out of state and the other leaving to pursue new
activities, but once again the Autocross program is well underway and
delighting its fans once again this year with new leadership. If you haven’t
tried it before, I would really recommend it, no matter what you drive.
While there is always some personnel crossover between the different
types of events, there are some dedicated groups of organizers for high
performance driving schools, car control clinics, the concourse, fun-rallies
and all the social and tech sessions that run throughout the year. The
common denominator is not only our volunteers’ passion for the chapter
events, but also their dedication to ensuring that events are safe, educational and the highest quality possible. I would like to thank our event
volunteers for their time and dedication and invite you, if you really enjoy
a specific event, to let the organizers know you would be willing to help.
We may not take you up on that offer right away, but it will be remembered and you can bet that when a need arises your phone might just ring.
Now let’s talk about our Street Survival teen driving skills program
that we run twice a year. I have mentioned before how rewarding and
valuable this event is to me and our chapter (I asked if I could help about
8 years ago). At the time of writing, we just finished another event with
30 kids in attendance. If you didn’t know this event picks up where drivers education leaves off. To get their license, kids have to operate the car
and drive around the block with a few basic maneuvers thrown in. Our
program trains these young people to be courteous, considerate and most
importantly heads up drivers in all weather conditions. You know this is
New England, where winters are fierce and we have some of the worst
drivers in the country. This class prepares teens for all of that and attempts to eliminate bad behaviors before they get started. The next class
is in September for only $75 and registration is open now for your friend
or relative aged 16-21.
So once again thank you all, volunteers and participants alike, for making all of our Boston family events possible, and if you would like to help
with future events, tell an organizer and ... pass it on. ♦

BIMMERS ACROSS THE BORDER XVI
Mt. Tremblant, Canada
Friday to Sunday, August 1st through 3rd
S
et your calendars for the Ultimate Family Vacation – the 16 th Annual Boston Chapter/Quebec
Chapter Bimmers Across the Border XV - Driving
School at the incredible Le Circuit Mont Tremblant
and Tremblant Resort. The setting is the Europeanstyle resort village Mont Tremblant nestled in the
splendor of the Laurentian Mountains; Mont Tremblant is located just 90 miles northwest of Montréal.
This is the perfect vacation getaway for the entire
family. The driving enthusiasts’ have the world class
racetrack and everyone else has a world class resort
all within a radius of only 2 miles! Come early, stay
late, and bring your friends … you can easily spend
a week without getting
bored. The area features fine restaurants,
shopping, and over 100
miles of protected trails
for biking, skateboarding, and roller blading.
There are two great
golf courses, an aquatics center and spa, and
a beautiful lake with a
large beach. There are
activities for the entire
family.
The Track:
Built in 1964 in the shadow
of the majestic Mont-Tremblant, the picturesque and
twisty 15-corner 2.65-mile
track was completely rebuilt and upgraded in 2001.
It is two meters wider all
around with extensive runoff areas everywhere. Le
Circuit Mont-Tremblant has been upgraded to meet
FIA vintage Formula racing safety standards. If you
loved the track before, you won’t believe it now!
Situated in one of the most gorgeous settings in the
world for a race track, the layout is a classic, as it
combines the natural topography of the site with elevation changes from the start/finish line, to corner 8
and back again. The track is bordered by Lake Moore
and The Devil River (La Diable).
We have worked very hard to provide an exceptional amount of track time each day. Advanced solo
students will get 2.5 hours of track time each day on
Saturday and Sunday and over 3.5 hours on Friday (if
you sign up for the additional day). All other groups
will get over 2.5 hours of track time each Saturday
and Sunday with a bit more time for soloed intermediate students possible on Sunday afternoon. Please
note: there is an imposed sound limit of 92db and the
30 car limit per session for this event.

Member Spotlight by Rachel Baker
T
he year was 1992, when Mari Hulman George first included the word “lady” in this command that starts
the Indianapolis 500. That was the second time that
a woman (Lyn St. James following Janet Guthrie’s 1977
debut) drove in the Indy 500. Over the past two decades
there have been many more female drivers in auto racing,
but despite the strides women have made in the sport,
most people don’t normally think of auto racing as a woman’s sport. Nor do they think of a car club as the kind of
organization to which women would gravitate, especially
one that offers high performance driving schools. For better or worse our member ratio matches this assumption.
However, with a whole generation
of young women who have grown
up watching Danica Patrick on the
race track, perhaps the times and
our mind set are changing. BMW
CCA is an organization where
members can meet individuals with
similar interests and share their
enthusiasm, and this opportunity
extends not only to men, but also
to women. So, before you ask the
next woman you see if that is her
boyfriend’s or husband’s car, really
take a look and see if the smile on
her face might be the pride she has
for her own vehicle.
Meet Jess Stratton
On this page:
Jess Stratton is pictured behind the wheel
of her MINI Cooper S at a Boston Chapter
event ready to test the course.
On the next page:
Athena DeGangi says “You only live once,”
as she proudly shows off her red Mazda
Miata and BMW M Roadster.
Jess Stratton bought a MINI Cooper
S in 2005, which she claims was one
of the most irresponsible purchases she ever made that completely
changed her life. She loved driving
and being in the car, but had no
idea about Driving Events until she
was invited to try the OctoberFAST
held at MINI of Peabody that con-
tained a small autocross set up by the Boston Chapter
BMW CCA. The screeching tire and the smell of brake
dust got her addicted!
Not knowing anyone in any of the local car clubs,
she researched different car clubs in the area to participate in when Spring came. She got different vibes from
the websites, but after attending a few more events she
came to recognize people, and people started offering
her guidance. Jess wants them to know that she can’t
explain how welcoming they helped her feel, just by
noticing her, remembering her name, and offering her
bits of advice. Jess wanted to create a sense of camaraderie with the other Autocross gals so she founded
“Pixie Posse Racing” (we ARE the dangerous curves)
a group of like minded women who enjoy the competition and sociability of the Driving Events.
As a female, Jess looks forward to the Boston Chapter events, because not only are the members the nicest
folks she’s ever met, but they don’t ask, “is this your
car” but instead go straight up and ask her what she’s
done to it, her Autocross times, and her opinion of
tires and set-up. She doesn’t normally get approached
when she’s out driving her car in the real world, so
being in the BMW CCA helps put her in contact with
other car people and provides an outlet for her to talk
cars. She enjoys not having to say, “Yes, this car is
mine and yes, it gets tracked on the weekend!”
Meet Athena DeGangi
Athena DeGangi was resigned to her life of being a matronly community college teacher of Humanities and
History, until students started to comment on her car,
thinking it belonged to one of the students. She felt
such pride being recognized for her car that she decided to shake off her staid life and join the College’s new
Autocross Club that was being started by the Automotive Program. She had no idea what Autocross was, but
marched into the meeting, and being told that she was
in the wrong place boldly signed up to the surprise of
all the guys gathered.

Athena participated in her first event with the local
College club, and was immediately accepted by everyone and encouraged by some of the instructors to try
some larger events. This brought her down to the Devens
area where many of the local clubs run. After her second
season, she convinced her husband (Yes! The reverse of
the normal!) to try out the Evolution Driving School
being held by the Boston Chapter BMW CCA, and that
experience brought an M Roadster into their lives.
Athena drives different cars at the various local
events, including a BMW M Roadster, a Mazda Miata
and an Acura RSX. She says that she is having so much
fun, that it doesn’t matter to her if she is ever the fastest and most competitive. She enjoys battling with
the guys, and also cheering and mentoring the other
women who show up. She finds that all the guys have
been really supportive and encouraging in helping her
become a better driver. She says you only live once,
and she has lots of time to make up for!
Boston Chapter embraces women!
As you can see, the Boston Chapter of the BMW CCA
is a welcoming and inviting place for all members.
Women are especially grateful to find a place where
they can relax, be themselves, and unself-consciously
indulge in their love of cars. So, the next time you see
a woman who obviously takes pride in her car, take
time to introduce yourself and start a car conversation
– and invite her to a Boston Chapter event! ♦

Historical Fun Rally: “Local” fun from beginninig to end
by Eduardo McIntosh & Marcy Venezia, photos by Rachel Baker & Marcy Venezia
O
n Saturday, May 31 the Rally Meisters did it again!
Foiled the contestants, gaining a 7 point advantage. Yep, the winner got seven wrong. It’s an art
perfected over the last 6 years of crafting these diabolical, clever, confusing, insane, irrational exciting fun
rallies. Did you miss it again? It was an adventure and
a history lesson all in one ... oh and great food!
Eduardo McIntosh sent us off, as he watched paddle boarding lessons and ducks on the Charles River.
Eduardo was longing to join the fisherman, when he
received the first of 3 phone calls “Where is the starting
place?” Diabolical! Hide the start location.
After rescheduling due to weather, a few arrived
with the tops down in Z3 and Z4 convertibles. It took
about two and a half to three hours to complete the
course which wove participants through Weston, Lincoln, Concord and Wayland. We visited famous battle
grounds, memorials, and the homes and inspiration for
poets and writers.
Food is always a highlight of the event
We like to choose an edgy high quality find of a restaurant and we were not disappointed with The Local:
Kitchen & Drinks. For those of you who could not make
this highly entertaining event, The Local is located at
400 Boston Post Road in Wayland and has a unique
and satisfying menu specializing in fresh local foods.

On this page from top to bottom:
• The festivities ended at The Local, a festive eatery in Wayland.
Participants posed for a picture after a great meal.
• There was time to catch up with old friends before the rally
started near the Charles River in Newton, MA.
On the next page:
• We paused for a group shot before the action began.
Oh My God the Fried Crab Sandwich was incredible.
But call ahead because they sell out fast; 508-276-8263
(www.liveeatlocal.com/wayland). Michael Wolfson,
general manager, welcomed us graciously and gave us
the best view of the house.
And the winners are ...
From our prime seats Eduardo and Marcy could anxiously wait to see if anyone was able to follow directions
and finish the rally.
First place: As luck would have it, Rachel Baker
and Dave White in Rachel’s Orange BMW 135 came careening through the parking lot to arrive first. Dave
must have been saying to Rachel faster, faster. They
were first place!
Second place went to cousins Rich and Jim Currie with 67 questions right. Jim said he has done “fun”
(more like torture) rallies where you get clues but not
directions.
Third place originally went to Brian and Christine
Borchers in their beautiful red Z3 convertible but when
late comers Carmine and Victoria Camerato arrived
with a fewer number of wrong answers, the Borchers
graciously gave their prize to them. If only Dave had
been in the car with them.
More fun coming this Fall
Check out pictures of this and other chapter events on

Also, Lyle Nyberg took more than 20 picture of the rally,
and they can be seen on Shutterfly - http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=0BZOW7RmzZMmem.

First Quarter General Meeting
at BMW Gallery-Norwell
Story by John Sullivan, photos by Rachel Baker
T
he meeting was hosted by Avery Trumbo General
Manager of BMW Gallery-Norwell on Wednesday
evening, May 7th. The speakers were Dave Buchko Corporate PR for BMW NA talking about the ever growing
model line up for this year along with release dates, and
Eric Sargent the 2 Series Brand Manager who brought
along a M235 for us to salivate over. They drove up to
Norwell from BMW NA in Woodcliff Lake NJ. Dave
brought a new X3 Diesel which still had a quarter of a
tank of fuel left! Dave of course was asked the universal
question regarding the status of Manual Transmissions
going away! He elaborated about the advances of the 8
Speed Auto Trans and how efficient and durable it is
(able to handle the Torque from the Diesel engines). He
also mentioned that if we want to keep Manual Transmission vehicles in the “line up” we would need to
purchase more of them!
Steve Powers the BMW Parts Manager had a 20% discount off BMW Parts and also offered Synthetic Oil on
sale at cost. There were several cases going out the door
into happy participants cars before the meeting! There
was a “rush” at the Parts Counter before the meeting
started, but there were several people helping out that
made the process move right along. He also had a “goodie” table arranged for the participants.
Ted Etchings the Service Manager was in attendance
as well. He helped with set up before the meeting and
we had a chance to discuss them hosting a Undercarriage Tech session in August. Alan Zaidan the CPO

Manager provided
several copies of
the CPO cars that
were currently in
their inventory to peruse.
Avery had provided sandwiches, beverages & dessert
for all of us, and no one went home hungry! All in all it
was a great insightful meeting. I also wanted to mention
that Avery arranged for three $50 parts gift certificates
that were raffled off that evening. The winners were
Shawn Williams, Paul Blecharczyk and Mike Milano.
Many thanks go out to the BMW NA folks who took
the time to attend and everyone at BMW Gallery-Norwell that helped make it an enjoyable evening! ♦

Undercarriage Tech Session
at BMW Gallery-Norwood Story by John Sullivan
O
n May 10 th, Mike Fitzgerald the Service Manager at Norwood was kind enough to reschedule
an Undercarriage Tech Session at the Gallery’s
Norwood location that was originally arranged for
December. Unfortunately Mother Nature got in the
way and the event was cancelled due to that “white
stuff”!
Mike had three BMW techs inspecting everyone’s
BMW. Dan MacDonald Service Writer came in on his
day off to register the participants and to ensure that
everyone received a written inspection sheet about
any problem areas that were detected during the inspection. I was fortunate to get Chad W. as my Tech
for my 1988 325 iX. The car has over 200K miles on it
but it soldiers on. I had been having problems with a
vibration and hum noise and expressed my concerns
to Chad. He immediately went to the rear section
of the two piece drive
shaft as this vehicle
is an all wheel drive
car. In the rear of the
driveshaft is a U-Joint
which Chad quickly
surmised was bad. He
pointed out to me the
“red dust” around the
U-Joint and mentioned that this was my problem.
That was two weeks before an HPDE that I was attending with the Chapter at NHMS. I obtained a rear
driveshaft (last one in the Country) and was able to
get it installed before the Driving School! The ride is
nice and smooth now!
Ed Reynolds the Parts Manager at the GalleryNorwood offered a 20% discount on parts that day
and a 25% discount on BMW Boutique items. Ed also
was kind enough to provide coffee & munchkins for
the participants that morning. ♦
Undercarriage Tech Session
at Import AutoWerks Story by Evan Richman
I
attended the Undercarriage Tech Session at
Import AutoWerks in Braintree on May 3rd.
I was scheduled for a 9 a.m. inspection, but
drove my E39 540i in about 30 minutes early to
check out the shop and other member’s rides.
The shop had coffee and donuts available to
participants as they got ready for inspections.
They had about half a dozen mechanics on
duty, and I was able to meet and chat with other
members who were participating.
The mechanic who inspected my car was
Johnny Li, who was very courteous and knowledgeable. He examined the engine bay, and then
lifted the car. He was fine with me looking and listening over his shoulder while he worked, pointing
out the good and the bad (fortunately not the ugly)
as he went along. He filled out their Comprehensive
Vehicle Inspection report with over 50 checks.
I have owned the car less then a year and mostly have done preventative maintenance since then,
fluids and brakes, so this was my first opportunity
to get an overview of the car’s condition. What he
found was that the car was generally in good shape,
save for the upper timing cover gaskets, which were
leaking, as were a line or two on the power steering
system. Other E39 owners were commiserating with
me and shared that
these were common problems with
these vehicles.
I was motoring
out of the shop
about an hour after
my appointment.
All in all an excellent experience.
Thanks to my technician Johnny and shop owner Alvin for hosting this
great event. These types of events are definitely a
benefit to chapter members. ♦

Team RLL is invited given the ALMS/USSCC participation and they meet all of the rules, but don’t

rationale of the limited high speed performance of
the Z4 and the high average speed at LeMans driving a decision based on probability of win, but you
never know what might happen at Circuite de Sarthe
on Father’s Day. This year’s race is a good example
with many teams having issues and Audi pulling off

Philes’ Forum: Mission Impossible revisited
– Story and photos by Vic Lucariello
“G
ood morning, Mr. Phelps.”; “This mission, should you choose to accept it, …”;
“Should you or a member of your IM force
be caught or killed, the secretary will disavow any
knowledge …”; “This tape will self-destruct …”
The foregoing catchphrases of the
1960s were heard every week on
TV’s Mission: Impossible. I think it
ran on Sunday night. Jim Phelps’ IM
force had any number of cool gadgets used to put the hurt on some
very bad guys (who affected some
really bad foreign accents), usually
by outsmarting them. I recall my
Dad saying that the only place on
Earth where battery-operated gadgets worked as advertised was on
Mission: Impossible. I think Dad
was referring specifically to an episode where they drilled through the
steel wall of a safe with a batteryoperated drill (Remember, this was
nearly a half-century ago.). Given
the current status of battery-powered cars, perhaps Dad was ahead
of his time on this topic; as he was
on many, many others (e.g.: whitewall tires). But that’s fodder for a
Father’s Day column.
Mission possible ...
Back to the more-recent past: This
was all brought to mind at our Tire
Rack Teen Street Survival event,
where the NJ Chapter’s Mr. Phelps,
Mr. Ed Hansen, accepted the mission to deploy safely an automotive
airbag as a demonstration of the
explosive power of these, er, safety
devices.
Ed had studied airbag schematics, so he knew that connecting a
12-volt DC supply across the airbag’s two wires should set it off.
Ed said that he was not comfortable
20 | Boston Bimmer • June / July 2014
simply using jumper wires and a
12-volt source, so he concocted the
triggering device shown in Photo
#1. See what I mean about Mission:
Impossible?
Well, Mr. Hansen’s mission
proved to be possible – indeed,
quite successful – and the assemblage of teens and
parents was duly
impressed with
the Big Bang
and smoke
of the airbag.
All observers
were kept at
a very conservative distance
from ground zero,
but I think they can all now imagine what it would be like to have
one of those suckers deploy two
feet in front of your face! I think
that more than one of the teen drivers (and parents as well) will think
twice before putting their feet up on
the passenger dashboard!
Ed agreed to be photographed
at the moment of deployment. See
Photo #2. The only thing better
would have been if Ed had managed to make the trigger box self
destruct! (I am certain he could
have.) Ed’s next mission is to figure
out how to get all the smoke back
into the airbag so he can reuse it!
See Photo #3.
Much thanks to bimmerphile Ed
for taking the time for the preparation and demonstration. He doesn’t
know it yet, but you may see him
working the driver-school Tech
line. I heard he is developing a stun

gun to test on drivers who show up with incomplete
Tech Forms. Heck, he already has the cool trigger box …
Meanwhile, under the dash ...
In April and May I wrote about changing the clutch
slave cylinder on Joanne’s 1995 E36 325is. While I was
at it, I decided to change the original clutch master cylinder, so I found myself under the dash. While things
were apart I investigated the sloppiness and side-to-side
play in the clutch pedal itself.
As is well documented on the Internet, E36s (and
other models) are known for sloppiness and squeaking
in both their clutch and brake pedals. The pedals are
suspended fairly rigidly, but I think BMW could have
used a more robust bushing between the pedals and
their suspending shafts. The bushing is Part Number
35 21 1 158 290 (two required), and it is listed as being
used on models starting with the E24 6-Series and E30s
right up to the F13 6-Series! Some models use the same
bushing for both the clutch and brake pedals. The bushing in question is on the right in Photo #4, and lists for
about $1.50.
As you might expect, the aftermarket has responded
with “upgrade” bushings, and two of the numerous
vendors offering them are Rogue Engineering and AKG
Motorsports. The cost is $15-20 plus shipping for two
bushings. The Rogue pieces are made of Delrin (DuPont
trade name for an acetal-resin thermoplastic), while
AKG offers both Delrin and bronze versions.
Again referring to Photo #4, the bushing on the left
is one I made from Delrin. I set the length of the bushing such that when both bushings are installed into the
clutch pedal, there is very little space between them.
This maximizes the bearing area. I also made the bushing flanges a bit thicker than the stock bushings, to
reduce the side-to-side play in the pedal. Photo #5 depicts my new bushing installed into the E36 “plastic”
clutch pedal. After reinstallation, there was virtually
no side-to-side play in the clutch pedal, and it was as
quiet a church mouse. Another mission: accomplished.
The replacement of the clutch (and brake) pedal
bushings is pretty straightforward (the hardest part is
squeezing yourself under the dash), and there are howto videos on the Internet that show the job better than I
can in this format.
That’s all for now, bimmerphiles. See you next time.
Anyone wishing to contribute to Philes’ Forum can

tech tips, repair /maintenance questions, repair horror
stories, emissions-inspection sagas, product evaluations, etc. ♦

Victory eludes us no more: 24 hours of LeMons
Story by Dan Chadwick, photos by Neil Halin
T
he smartest guinea pig. The tallest
Dachshund. ... Fastest 24 Hours of
Lemons racer? ... Same sort of thing.
This insignificance doesn’t preclude us
from being obnoxiously pleased. With
our win, that is, not our rodent intelligence or canine stumpy legs.
As attentive Boston Bimmer readers will recall, the 24,
well really 14½, Hours of LeMons is a race for an insane number of cheap, ill-conceived, poorly-executed
race cars. Insane, as in 160 cars on a 2 mile track. Some
teams come to fix – or even build – their terrible cars in
the dirt, then drive a few laps and party all night. Others show up in costumes and put on a pageant of bad
taste and inappropriate car decoration. Borat, take your
g-string elsewhere; we didn’t come for the floorshow.
Many drivers have limited or no track experience and
just want to circulate in race traffic.
And some come to win.
LeMons isn’t supposed to be about winning. The rules
discourage trying too hard. Many competitors frown

on being, well, competitive. Those who “get” LeMons
are there for the Woodstock-meets-circle-track show.
We hadn’t won and yet desperately wanted to – double
losers. Until now.
A brief history
of the NOSM
The
Near-Orbital
Space Monkeys started as a pick-up team
that built a 1988 BMW
528e with the plan to
race it once and throw
it out. We did, then
didn’t. Team members
drifted in and out and
the car won a best-inclass and a regional
championship, routinely placing in the
top 10 or so.
At Stafford Springs
(a small circle track in
Connecticut), we started the Sunday racing in first place.
A micro-burst interrupted the race.
At the restart, I drove through the
infield puddle and 6” mini geysers
erupted from all the holes in the
floor. The race started and I worked
my way through traffic, around the
oval, and emerged alone onto the
front straight. As I squeezed on
throttle, the car rotated, and as everyone who’s spun knows, thought,
“I’ve got it, I’ve got it, don’t got it.”
Black flagged, the judge stuck his
head in the car.
Judge: “Did you hit a cone?”
Me: “I spun.”
Judge: “But did you hit a cone?”
Me: “I hit a whole s--tload of
them!”
Judge: “I like this guy. No penalty. Go back out.”
We went on to win Class B (Bad,
out of Good, Bad, and Ugly classes),
missing first place by 75 seconds.
At a 24 hour ChumpCar race at
Virginia International Raceway, the
BMW desperately needed a control
arm. Two teammates ventured off
deep into the North Carolina woods
to try to extract one from a guy’s
spare E28, while being buzzed by
bugs with tail numbers and eyed by
the shotgun-toting neighbor. And
something about a dog. The owner
Sound like fun?
Here’s some advice.
1
Progress through the
Boston Chapter’s driving
school program until you are
comfortable in the advanced
run group. Racing is less
stressful if track driving is second nature.
2
Pick teammates that you
enjoy; you’ll be spending a
lot of time together.
had said, “Ya ain’t afeared of dogs,
areya?” When the control arm bolts
failed to yield to bulging arms, the
teammates returned to find the car
quietly smoking. My brother went
off through the grass and knocked
off the serpentine belt. He didn’t
see the alternator light behind the
roll cage’s dash bar. I think we
were slightly relieved to not have
to drive on that wonky suspension
at night.
Our reputation proceeds us
In the LeMon’s community, NOSM
is known for selling its reliable,
easy-to-drive, class-winning BMW
and building a horrific, impossibleto-drive, guaranteed-to-break 1989
5.0 liter Mustang.
What became of that 528e? Its
current owners have raced it another dozen or so times with only
the most minor of repairs and
maintenance.
The Mustang? Um. No.
Our first race in the Mustang revealed a cracked block which caused
it to consume nearly as much water
as gas. We drove down the straight
at NHMS by the water temp. At
230°F, we’d lift, and whoosh, everyone else would stream by.
3
4
5
Have each teammate contribute in some way.
Agree on the finances and
ownership of the car.
Be prepared to spend $5K
or more to build the car,
more if you’re not doing all
the work yourself, much less
if you buy someone else’s car.
6
Each event will cost around
$4000, including fees, gas,
tires, brakes, repairs, maintenance, and beer. Reliable slow
cars are cheaper. Sound expensive? That’s about $1000
each for 3-4 hours of racing
time – dirt cheap for racing.
7
8
Invest in good safety gear.
Guest drive on someone
else’s team to see if you
like it before building your
own car.
9
10
Reliable, fast, legal. No one
gets all three.
Don’t want to win. You’ll
be less frustrated if you
are happy just being part of
the scene and turning some
laps. We suck at this.

High stakes negotiations
At Virginia International Raceway, we blew our transmission early in the race. When my negotiations for a
replacement were hampered by the seller’s southern
drawl, I thrust my phone into my teammate’s hand.
“Here. You speak southern.” He explained to the seller
that I was “hard of hearing,” which I’m pretty sure was
code for “dumb as dirt.” We pooled our cash – about
twice what the tranny was really worth – and met the
seller at a sketchy rest area. I expected to get the transmission, robbed or shot, and was relieved to receive only
one of the three.
At Summit Point, West Virginia, the clutch let go. Our
team’s chief mechanic replaced it in the dirt on a very hot
day with a new Duralast friction disc from Autozone. It
must have been as tough as your brain’s dura because it
lasted just three laps. We replaced again with a worn Ford
disc bought from a competitor, which lasted just fine.
And the damn fuel tank.
The car had a series of perplexing, seemingly impossible
symptoms. We examined and modified the fuel tank. We
replaced wiring. We changed the engine computer, coil,
plugs, wires, distributor, and just about everything else
that makes sparks. We tried a new fuel filter and fuel
pump. We insulated fuel lines from heat and improved
the tank’s ability to vent. Every “solution” would work
for a while – like a few hours – just long enough that we
couldn’t test it except during an actual race.
Along the way, the Mustang also managed a class-win
at Stafford Springs. We had a bunch of top-ten finishes.
At NHMS, the last driver radioed in that the brakes were
going. With 20 minutes left, the brake pads were gone.
The backing plates were gone. The brake pistons were
gone. And finally the brake fluid was gone. I do not recommend loading a brakeless car onto a trailer without
a winch.
Frustrated, in 2013 we improved the brakes, fixed the
fuel issues, made some ghetto alignment improvements
and ponied up for better tires. The car was easier and
more fun to drive. And it stopped. Since the car worked,
we compensated by handicapping ourselves with raceending penalties and bad luck.
ity or penalty problems.
When the track is green, time flies by. You aren’t
overheated or dehydrated. Your bladder isn’t full. Your
shoulders don’t ache. Your head doesn’t throb. But when
the track goes full course yellow, you wonder if you can
make it to the end of your stint.
So how did we finally win?
A combination of a reliable car, solid driving, and luck.
At New Jersey Motorsports Park’s Thunderbolt track
this May, several of our competitors were disqualified
for driving infractions. Others broke semi-essential components like transmissions and engines. And while we
did make some small mistakes, they were smaller than
the mistakes that other teams made.
With about an hour left in the race, we realized that
we had neglected a vital purchase. I drove out to the
store and when I returned with the beer, I really expected to see the car smoking in the garage. Instead, it was
on track a minute or two ahead of the second-place car,
which was steadily gaining on us. At the checker, they
ran out of time and we savored our first overall win. At
the winner’s podium, I emptied the meltwater from our
seat cooler onto the last driver. He looked hot.
Footnote:
The Near-Orbital Space Monkey concept
was created by Mike Cox, who has now fled the state.
The cars were built by Mike Barton. The Mustang was
evolved by Matt Malfa. The winning drivers were Neil
Halin, Mark Viola, Jim Viall, and Dan Chadwick. They
are all Boston Chapter driving school instructors and
some of them are still on speaking terms.
About the author: Dan Chadwick has been a BMW CCA
member since 1999 and serves on the Board of Directors
and Driving Events Committee of the Boston Chapter. He
created and maintains Driving Evals, the on-line student/
instructor evaluation system and co-created SLIP, the Skill
Level Instruction Program which helps instructors accurately
evaluate students. Both are used by Boston Chapter and other
chapters of the BMW CCA.
Sounds awful, right?
In between the endless work and aggravation, there was
the thrill of driving on a race track with 150+ other cars.
Most of these teams are not fast enough to do well. But
with some luck, maybe 20-30 teams have the car and talent to win. On the track, you are intensely racing the cars
ahead of you in the standings, while working through a
thicket of slower car and being passed by a few very fast
non-contenders who have had or will soon have reliabil24 | Boston Bimmer • June / July 2014

PDR Tech Session by Dent Craft
From Edmund Powers:
T
hrough the BMW CCA Boston Chapter I signed up
for the PDR Tech Session at Dent Craft in North
Reading. I know that most of the dents being repaired were small door dings, but my wife had just
been hit in a parking lot in
her 2013 Audi Q5 (yeah, I
know sorry its an Audi) and
it was definitely more than
a door ding. A press/dent
about the size of softball and
it cut across a crease in the
body line. I knew it was a
long shot they could fix this,
but for the substantially
cheaper rate being charged
through Boston BMW CCA,
I thought it was worth a shot.
I showed up at Dent Craft
and Matt waived me in. The
shop was basically a large
garage, but very clean and
rather new looking. I was
a bit apprehensive he might
tell me that it was not possiBefore (above), After (below).
ble to fix the dent in the car.
Matt saw the dent as I pulled in and when I got out we
discussed it. He acknowledged it would be difficult or
impossible to remove entirely (due to the dent across
the body line), but he would do his best. Matt worked
the entire 1/2 hour with his bag of tools tapping, pushing and pulling to get the dent out. We chatted for most
of the time he worked; he is a very friendly guy!
Matt was able to “correct” most of the dent in the
first 5 or 10 minutes, but he spent another 20 working
to try and remove it entirely. After he had done as much
as possible, he hit the dent with a quick buff to remove
the paint left by another vehicle. While total removal of
the dent wasn’t possible, it was almost 98% removed.
It looked good enough afterwards that my wife and I
don’t feel the need to pay a body shop to fix it. Even
with insurance paying, our deductible would cost us
$1,000 plus loss of the car for at least a few days. The
results of Matt’s work are in the pictures below and I
think it came out great.
Thanks Matt, highly recommended your services to
anyone looking to get a dent or door ding repaired!
From Howard Miller:
I
had a dent on my passengers side front panel from
a thoughtless person’s Subaru door. I only had the
car 6 months and even my Autocross instructor noticed it. I never had dent removal done but I figured for
$65, anything would be an improvement. I pulled into
Matt’s garage and after only 20 minutes the dent was
practically gone. Even though I had a 2013 F30, Matt
quickly figured out the right panels to move to access
the dent. Will definitely keep him in mind next time.
Breakfast was a bonus!
From Louis Rissin:
M
att fixed an “outie” dent from a tool left on the
engine while closing the hood! I thought it would
be impossible to fix ... but see for yourself in the
pictures below (before at left, after at right)! ♦
