Ready for Winter! - the Alpine High Country
PRICELESS SUMMER EDITION FIFTEEN Ready for Winter! FRIDAY 24TH MAY 2013 Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK THE ICE PLUNGE A Dip to Savour T he annual Falls Creek Ice Plunge is an institution in the North East. Taking its roots from tradition commonly seen overseas, it challenges the bravest (or craziest) to dip into the crisp waters of Rocky Valley Dam as a celebration of the first day of winter. Those who take the plunge (thankfully not this reporter) say it is an exhilarating thrill. This year it is all going to happen again and the participation of the ‘Brighton Icebergers’ will see some seasoned professionals join the ranks! The event will be held next Saturday the 1st of June at 10am at Rocky Valley Dam. Event signage will be out on the day to show you where to go. Now what can we expect for this year? Well there are a couple of challenges to be met. The first is to get into the water. The second is to understand that there are rubber duckies out in the water getting cold. Part of your challenge for the Ice Plunge is to rescue a rubber ducky - for which there are some great prizes donated by local businesses. The third challenge is to dress up. Raid the lost property box LOCAL RADIO Alpine Radio 96.5 FM In the Kiewa Valley Alpine Radio 92.9 FM In the Ovens Valley Emergency Services Broadcaster Mount Beauty Community Radio for good music, local news, snow reports and developing programs.. (or the bride’s wardrobe) and create an original outfit - for which there are some excellent prizes. The major prize this year will be a $250 Voucher for Patagonia gear. The comfort and caring part of the day is also taken care of. Resort Management is going to give each entrant a fabulous gift which must remain secret until the day. Last year we all got a pair of Falls Creek socks. Pete the Snowdragon and his warming wit will be in attendance. The BBQ breakfast will be available on the day for a gold coin donation. A coffee cart will also be on site! The tootsies can be toasted around a couple of fires kindly proved by the SES. What can you do to make this a great event? Firstly, read and understand all of the above. Secondly get your entry in. You can register online quick and easy at www.fallscreek.com.au/iceplunge (and save a tree in the process) and then turn up. Even if you aren’t up for the challenge, come share some breakfast and cheer on the swimmers. Who knows - you could make it to national TV. Accommodation is available from $45 for the night so you can stay at the Resort and party the night away. FEELING A BIT CUT UP ? WE’LL SOON HAVE YOU IN STITCHES ! Summer 2013 Edition FIFTEEN Falls Creek & Mount Beauty THIS WEEK MOUNT BEAUTY MARATHON In Leaps & Bounds O ur Mount Beauty Half Marathon is important to this community for many reasons - not the least being that it features as the first event in the Great Alpine Challenge - with the other two events being the Kangaroo Hoppet in August, and the Mitta to Mount Beauty in October - the longest Triathlon in the World. The Half Marathon event is also important as it brings many people to the town for the weekend and it encourages a significant number of the local community to get out for a stroll, a jog, a pram push or to exercise the dog on a crisp autumn morning. And how lucky are we. Not only do we live in a beautiful part of the world, our weather gods look after us also. Entries this year reached record numbers. The Half Marathon entries dropped from 130 last year to 106 finishers this year. For the Ten Kilometre run, the figures were static - 177 finishers last year to 178 finishers this year. The great part is that more people got involved in the event by taking part in the 3km - from 117 last year to 171 finishers this year - a total of 455 finishers in the three events. What a great result. Overall winner was Jarrod Mullavey (1:13:41), followed by Luke Preston (1:16:18). With our own Hoppet winner, Ben Derrick in third place (1:19:14). Kristin Murtagh was very competitive, being first lady home in a time of 1:29:41. Second and third were almost a dead heat with Leah Wiseman in 1:34:15.3 and Sophy Sirr in 1:34:15.7. Close! Harrison Rees was first home in the 10km and Emma Pollard was first lady home. While many in the 3km enjoyed the stroll there was a bit of heat among the young guns with Tyler Scott first and Cassandra Richardson first lady home. The winner of the spot prize Mountain Bike was Dan Petzke of Barnawatha. From the Race Director There are many people involved in the Mount Beauty Half Marathon, in fact too many people to thank everyone personally! However, there were organisations involved in the following areas: JCR Civil (from Bright) and Rotary Club of Mount Beauty for traffic management, Parks Victoria staff for doing lead cars and tail cars, Rocky Valley Bikes and Snow Sports for supplying the mountain bike below cost price, Mount Beauty Secondary College for use of their PA and power and Tawonga Primary School for use of computers. Thank You Heather would like to thank all her massage, personal training and celebrancy clients for their business in the past year. She wishes everyone a healthy winter and looks forward to working with you again next September. Winner of the spot prize Mountain Bike donated by Rocky Valley Bikes was Dan Petzke of Barnawatha; here with Race Director Ian Franzke. Pic - Ken Bell. In addition there were, of course, many individual volunteers who made this great event happen on the day and in the weeks leading up to the race: Mount Beauty Half Marathon committee for their time organising the event and volunteers who helped with registration, course setting, timing, car parking, drink stations, presentations and packing up. A big thank-you to everyone involved. For each month that they do not have a Lost Time Injury or Medical Treatment Injury, the company donates a certain amount of money to a good cause. This scheme has proved to be very successful and two of our local schools have benefited from an extremely generous donation this month. Tawonga and Falls Creek Primary Schools have a focus on technology in the classroom this year, and AGL Hydro have purchased seven iPads (four for Tawonga and three for Falls Creek) for student use. The staff and students from both schools are very excited about the teaching and Andy Rookes, (Falls Creek), Tarn Dwyer (Tawonga), Ria Dwyer (Tawonga), Isaac Armitage (Falls Creek), Isaac Gorham (Tawonga) and Emma Lucey (Falls Creek) with the new iPads. Community Access-ability is a community based organisation which relies on the invaluable contributions of volunteers supporting the agency as drivers, travel companions, friends who care for a person with a disability and the Committee of Management. In Mount Beauty, our organisation provides transport for the frail, the aged and those with disabilities, to attend medical and therapy appointments outside their local community. Clients live in their own homes and have a transport disadvantage. The Alpine Shire provides necessary and valuable on-going support. Our current volunteers are amazing, always willing to help and fill extra runs when required. But - we need more! If you are interested in becoming a volunteer driver with Community Access-ability please contact Tanya, Rob or Kay on 02 6049 2100. It’s the whisper that will grow into a roar over the next month as we get closer to the Queen’s Birthday weekend. It’s the whisper of people counting down to season 2013 at Falls Creek. And Disabled Wintersport Australia is counting as enthusiastically as everyone else. This year will be another exciting season for DWA. Falls Creek will be hosting 14 DWA programs from June 21 to September 15. DWA’s camp program will be filled with people from a wide range of organisations. One of the organisations you’ll see a few times is Special Olympics Australia. Special Olympics provides people with intellectual disabilities opportunities to compete in, and succeed at, all sorts of sports. This year should see big interest in winter sports from Special Olympics members following Australia’s success earlier this year at the World Winter Games in Pyeong Chang in South Korea. Australia’s five team member gathered three gold medals, six silver medals and four bronze medals during the Games - a huge achievement, especially given this was Australia’s first crack at the event. So watch out, the Special Olympians are coming! Another group who will put in a good showing at Falls Creek this year will be the Spina Bifida Foundation. DWA will be holding two programs with the Spina Bifida Foundation - one for adults and one for kids. The kids group always makes quite the impression at Falls Creek, with most of their members overflowing with excitement. The kids have been seen careering around the hill in their bi-skis, hollering their joy at everyone around them. DWA also has many members who visit Falls Creek with their families independently of DWA’s programs. Most of the time you probably won’t even realise they’re in town. Other times you might stop to admire someone arcing turns down Scott’s in their mono-ski on a quiet Thursday afternoon. These DWA members might not need assistance from a volunteer guide, but there are others that do. Most of DWA’s guides are available on the weekend, so if a member comes during the week it can be difficult for them to get the help they need on snow. This is where you can help! If you’re someone who enjoys skiing and Fully licensed restaurant Now Open Special Olympics skier, Michael Sacks with guides Megan Clark & Eleanor Pierce enjoying Falls Creek during last season. Pic - Barb Sims. snowboarding and helping others but are busy on the weekends, you might be able to help during the week. Even if you’re only available every second Thursday after the full moon, you might be able to make a person with a disability’s experience at Falls Creek better. Now’s a great time to get involved. It is understood that while the Shire will pay for people to do the training required to be able to staff the crossing, there are no funds in the budget to be able to pay those qualified people to actually work at the crossing. There, the following are some notes from Vic Roads re Children’s Crossings. • When flags are displayed, all pedestrians should cross at the crossing. • If the crossing has a supervisor, always obey the instructions of the supervisor. • If there isn’t a supervisor look and listen for traffic before crossing. • Make sure all traffic has stopped before stepping onto the crossing. • Only cross when it is safe to do so. • Stay alert - keep looking for and listening for traffic while crossing. Drivers and Riders at children’s crossings:• Must not overtake a vehicle stopping or stopped at a crossing. • Must stop if a child or adult is about to cross, or is crossing, even if there is no supervisor. • Must stop if a hand held ‘Stop’ sign is displayed. • May proceed only when all children and adults, including the supervisor, are clear of the crossing. • Must approach at a speed slow enough to stop safely if necessary. • Should always watch out for children near schools. Worn tyres can lead to severe penalties. The most important aspect in tyre care is correct pressure. Regularly checking the pressure is good safe motoring and leads to improved tyre wear, better handling and ride. Rotating tyres regularly also leads to better and more even wear - providing the best chance of extending the life of your tyres. Fitting the correct tyres to your vehicle is also important. The wrong size tyres will wear quickly and badly. For further information of tyre fitting, pressures and rotation, consult your local mechanic. In Mount Beauty our organisation provides transport to the frail, the elderly and those with disabilities who need to attend medical and therapy appointments outside of their local community. To qualify for this service, clients must live in their own homes and would be disadvantaged because of a lack of transport. The Alpine Shire and Alpine Health have been great supporters of this program over the years and their support has proved to be invaluable. Without this support, the community transport service would not continue in this area. Equally as important are our volunteers who are really amazing - always willing to help out and fill extra runs when required. Last week, from 13th to 19th of May was National Volunteers Week - the largest celebration of volunteers and volunteerism in Australia, and provides an opportunity to highlight the role of volunteers in our communities and to say thank you to the more than six million Australians who volunteer. Last Thursday our Community Access volunteers met at the Mount Beauty Neighbourhood Centre for their ‘Thanks a Million’ luncheon, where they were presented with their ‘Thanks a Million’ volunteer badge & certificate in appreciation of their amazing work. The creation of this track has been a labour of love for the instigators and a dedicated effort on the part of all involved. Instigators in the main are Jim Crebbin, Mark Gould and Derek Hutton, with lots of moral support from members of the community. Shire personnel that got the project up and running were John Carter, with Lyn Blandford supporting and following up. The recently appointed track maintenance man with the shire is Colin Smith who, in his time in this valley, helps maintain the Gorge Track, the lower section of the Survey Track and of course, Pebble Beach Track. In the creation of the track, the crew from Stadelmann Enterprises did an excellent job preparing and laying a good surface. Since then David Sauervein has been in with the bobcat pushing the growth back from the path, preparing the verges for easier mowing. This mowing and maintenance will be done by Colin, with help from Jim and others. At a recent Lions Club meeting, members asked how they might help and the answer was that some slabs need to be laid in readiness for seats. Dave Sauervein prepared the sites for the seats, John & May Walton turned up with materials and tools, and with Colin Wilson and Jim Crebbin the slabs were prepared, poured and finished - including having to come back the next day and remove some idiot’s initials. Four slabs were poured on the walk, three for seats and one for bins and doggy bags (no excuses) and another was poured for a seat at the Tidy Towns fountain. Lyn at the shire had the seats ready and they are now installed - bringing to a fine conclusion the first stage of a project that has taken several years. Look out Tawonga and Damms Road. Thanks to everyone concerned. This is a project we can all be proud of. • PS: Folk on the walk have built little stone pyramids etc - and others have pushed them over, saying “they’re not natural.” Let the kids have some fun!
