HIGHLIGHT: CELTIC VILLAGE SALINA
Did you ever wonder what life was like in the time of the Celts?
The Celtic Village on Mount Dürrnberg offers a fascinating
look at the daily life of the prehistoric miners who, more
than 2500 years ago, mined in search of “white gold”. The
reconstructions of the houses and workshops from a
settlement during the La Tène period were undergoing a
complete overhaul in collaboration with Hallein Celtic Museum
in order to update them with the latest archaeological
discoveries and presentation methods. The Iron Age
archaeological site on Mount Dürrnberg is among the most
important in Central Europe.

Celtic museum (just 5 minutes drive from the Salt Mine)
On the newly-renovated and redesigned premises, the life of
the Celts is colourfully documented in an interesting and
self-explanatory manner. The Celtic Museum is open year
round, daily from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m.
Silent Night Museum
The world famous Christmas carol has its origins here.
The museum, situated in Franz Xaver Gruber’s house since
1993, gives visitors an insight into the life and work of the
composer of “Silent Night, Holy Night”.
Enjoy the special atmosphere whilst hearing about the
history of the world’s most famous Christmas carol and view
the guitar on which Joseph Mohr first played the song to an
audience at Christmas 1818.
Similarities between then and now:
Human fate and severe hardship below ground stand out in stark
contrast to the glittering energy of the final product – “White
Gold”. Visitors to the salt mine can experience this contrast in
the same way as the miners once did. The narrow gauge railway
will take you safely and comfortably into the mountain. Then you
are invited to straddle the miners slide and zoom down into the
heart of the mine, where you will go through mystical tunnels
into a world long forgotten. Travel through time: it will be a
surprising and unforgettable experience for all! Whether you're
on a company outing, a club excursion or a family day trip –
an adventure, fun and learning all lie in store for everyone, no
matter what the weather. Come rain or shine!

Entering the mine on the pit railway
Traditionally miners were, and indeed still are, a tight knit
community. For this reason, a company outing to the »Salzwelten« at Dürrnberg, near Hallein, is of particular interest
for tour groups . When entering the Tunnels of Wealth, so
significant for both the city of Salzburg and the surrounding
region, you are entering the oldest tourist mine in the world.
The salt mine has a 2,500 year old history in mining the
so-called »White Gold« of centuries past.
Learn interesting and amusing historical facts about:
g where the Celts mined for salt as early as 400 B.C.
and where teams of miners dug tunnels which were
kilometres long, using their bare hands,
g where during the reign of Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich
of Raitenau (1559-1617) the greatly treasured and vital
»White Gold« was mined using the “wet mining” procedure,
allowing huge amounts of salt to be traded successfully,
g where the money came from which funded the flamboyant
Baroque architecture of Salzburg, the splendid capital
city and former royal seat, now a part of the UNESCO
World Cultural Heritage.
g Special Christmas and Advent offers:

Hot on the heels of this compelling tour through the »Salzwelten« comes your next exciting adventure – Hohenwerfen

show featuring an array of different birds of prey. Your walk

Before descending down in the heart of the salt mine on your
discovery of the ancient, fascinating history of salt mining,
get an energy refill from the breathtaking nature of the
mountains, green pastures, and clean air. In the past, Fürstenhof in Kuchl was used by the Prince-Bishops of Salzburg
as an inn for lodgings and shelter for their horses. Today the
green pastures that surround it are home to the cows that
provide the diary farm with its precious raw material for its
cheese: pure natural milk. While you visit the diary, you will
discover the secrets for making cheese and after you will
learn to appreciate the flavors of this noble food at a tasting

Of Brine and Water - »Salzwelten«
& the Fountains of Schloss Hellbrunn
“Salzbeerig”
»Salzwelten« & the world of brewing
Fun and action – »Salzwelten«
& Rope Climbing Adventure Park
After an exhilarating journey into the depths of the Dürrnberg Salt Mine, it will be time to return to daylight, to a world
of water and enjoyment. As you walk amongst the fountains,
you never know what to expect next. Only one thing is for
certain: it’s going to be lots of fun. Water machines, grottos,
fountains – Markus Sittikus had these grounds built with an
eye to astonishing, entertaining and keeping his guests on
their toes. Hellbrunn is like a chamber of wonders, filled
with surprises and captivating contrasts. A memorable
excursion to centuries past combined with light-hearted
moments that very much belong to the here-and-now! Incidentally: The profits from the booming salt trade also allowed Markus Sittikus to finance Schloss Hellbrunn.
All this salt might make you feel thirsty! In that case, what
could be a better idea than a visit to the traditional Stiegl
brewery? Find out interesting details about the art of brewing beer on a guided tour of the visitors’ brewery. Beer has
shaped the city of Salzburg just as much as salt has and it is
an intrinsic part of the city to this day.
In the “Bräustüberl”, visitors can enjoy the cheerful atmosphere while savouring a glass of beer and a traditional
pretzel “Bierbrezen”. Then you start your journey home with
a gift from the Braushop.
After the exciting and instructive journey through time in the
»Salzwelten«, it’s time for some outdoor fun and action. Try
your hand at Burma Buckles, on the monkey swing or the
spider’s web. Over 100 exciting courses with varying degrees
of difficulty are at your disposal at the “Kletterpark Waldbad
Anif“. There’s fun in store for everyone here, regardless of your
speed or dexterity. No time limit exists, allowing each climber
to choose his own pace. If you feel like cooling off a bit in
between, then you can take a dip. The “SPEED Flying Fox” is
ideal for speed freaks! The starting point is at a height of 20
metres. From here you go speeding across the length of the lake
on a rope slide with top speeds of up to 60 km/h.

IMPORTANT: please read and print out the conditions of participation prior
to your visit and give the filled out form to the instructor in the Rope
Climbing Adventure Park! www.kletterparkwaldbadanif.at

Salzwelten Hallstatt –
The »Man Preserved in Salt«
7.000 YEARS OF SALT EXCAVATION IN THE WORLD’S OLDEST SALT MINE
Go on a unique journey through time. As part of an “explorer
team”, your adventure starts at the famous burial site and
continues on to the place of discovery of the legendary “Man
Preserved in Salt”.
Archaeologic Excavations at Hallstatt High Valley
The Hallstatt salt miners used to live in the Hallstatt High
Valley, a spot which nowadays is easily accessible in just a few
minutes via the Salzberg Mountain Railway. This is the place
where the true story of the “Man Preserved in Salt” began. He
was discovered deep within the salt mine in 1734. A second
such discovery is possible at any time as the pristine salt,
which is mined to this day, acts as a natural preservative. Feel

The life of this prehistoric citizen of Hallstatt has been the
main subject of the »Salzwelten« in Hallstatt. But in spite of
the historical importance of this find, fun and suspense still
play a major role here. Here you can zoom down one of the
world’s longest miner’s slides, equipped with speed camera,
and marvel at the mystically lit underground lake and admire the glistening salt crystal chamber. At the 4,000 m2 "Hörnerwerk" – a former saltwater plant – gigantic 3-D wall paintings are projected on the rocky walls, which documenting

Dramatic saving of art treasures

At the underground salt lake
The underground St. Barbara’s Chapel
The Salt Mine in Altaussee is Austria’s largest operating salt
mine. Here you can go underground and enter into the miner’s
world. There is much more to discover here than just salt.
Apart from the »White Gold« there is beauty and drama
generating art and culture. When entering into the Salt Mine,
you are entering a veritable mountain of treasures. During the
Second World War, the Salt Mine was used as a hiding place
for some of Europe’s most valuable works of art. A powerful
multimedia-documentation portrays the dedication and
courageous efforts of some of the local miners, who, over half
a century ago, helped thwart the senseless near-destruction
of many priceless works of art.

ALTAUSSEE
According to legend, the merman of Grundlsee told the local
fishermen about the salt deposits in the Sandling Mountain.
This makes the romantic 3-Lake-Tour in Grundlsee the
ideal choice in combination with a visit to the Salt Mine
»Salzwelten«. Visitors board the boat at the landing stage
“Seeklause – Seehotel” Grundlsee and enjoy a pleasant trip
across Lake Grundlsee to Gössl. After a short stroll to the
second lake, Toplitzsee, visitors board a long motor boat.
After an approx. 15 minutes ride, the boat reaches the third
lake, Kammersee (the source of the River Traun). Then it’s
back to Gössl, where the bus is waiting. This outing gives
visitors a whole range of unforgettable impressions: of the
nature, cultural landscape and the magical underground
world of the Ausseerland region.
Would the members of your group prefer to be among themselves? Then why not reserve an
exclusive guided tour solely for your group. Please inform us when making your reservation and
note that the group rate of ¤ 16,00 must be charged at least 25 times. Extra modules, such as the
miner’s welcome or the souvenir photo (see module plan below) are particularly popular. We will
also gladly carry out guided tours outside the official opening hours. Prices available on request.
