East Sweeps Over the Bridge Battle

DonalBane’s Unofficial War Points:
Midrealm Dragons 15, East Tygers 12
The two grand armies of the Dragon
and the Tyger returned to the field
Thursday for the Bridge battle. This
year, the battle included three fights over
five bridges, with each fight worth one
War Point.
The Midrealm deployed its forces on
the east side of the field. Æthelmearc, the
Tuchux, South Oaken, and Constellation
were sent to the left flanks; the Huskarls, Midlands, and Petamere went to
the center; Ealdormere, the Great Dark
Horde, Calontir ,and Outlands were sent
to the right; while North Oaken and the
western allies were held in reserve.
The East deployed from the west
side of the field, sending the Southern
army, Atlantia, and Black Talon to the
right; Duchy von Drachenklaue and the
Northern Army went to the center; and
the Ulsterblichen and Northfield were
sent to the north.
The first fight was a fairly static affair,
as the East seemed reluctant to engage
unnecessarily, given their lesser numbers. As a result, the Midrelam’s forces
seized the center of all five bridges and
held them just out of spear range from
the East.

What started out as a long weapons game during the Bridge Battle on Thursday
quickly degraded into a brawl as the front lines clashed.

Thursday Battlefield Report

Battlefield Reporter, Pennsic Independent
Belted Champions Battle
After the Bridge battles were completed, the East and
Midrealm met again on the field for the Belted Champions
battle. As usual, this battle included 20 champion knights
from both kingdoms.
The fight was quick and rugged affair, but the Tyger’s forces
were able to stick together better and roll over the field.
Unbelted Champions Battle
Just after the Belted Champions, the Unbelted Champions
of the East and Midrealm came together for their 40-on-40
fight.
Having seen their belted brethren fall, the Midrealm’s
forces came out with steely resolve and they showed it on
the battlefield. The Dragon’s forces rolled over the field with
minimal casualties and ground the East down.
As has become tradition, Captain Gunner, head of the Midrealm unbelts, was given a sword in friendship by his Eastern
counterparts. Gunner was later put on vigil for knighthood.
Allied Champions Battle
One the toughest and best fights of the war, the Allied
Champions battle took place Thursday about 30 minutes after
the other champions’ battles. The battle was an SCA-style
game of capture the flag with resurrections allowed in twominute intervals. The side that captured the other squad’s
flag seven times—or had the most captures in 60 minutes
—would earn the War Point.
The fight was a rollicking affair with battle lines wavering
all over the field. Several times, a warrior seized a flag only to
be tripped by the turf monster. There was also one occasion
where each side grabbed the other’s flag at the same time,
negating any scoring.
After splitting the first four captures, the East’s allies took
a 4-2 lead, and were able to hang on for a 4-3 win at the end
of the hour.
Bridge Battle
(continued from page 1)
The final push was so quick in coming, the Northern Oaken
Army was still in its reserve position when East forces surrounded it on all sides. The Oaken boys put up a heroic fight,
but ultimately fell.
Jubilant East forces were elated with victory as cries of
“Konrad! Konrad!” rang out as the Tyger King visited and
complemented each of his forces.
Thursday Rapier Report
By Grizzly of Ironstar
Marshall Reporter, the Pennsic Independent
Battle of Tortuga
Thursday afternoon (with sword and musket), pirates
attacked at the Main Rapier List. Two groups of merchants
and a group of pirates went at it ship-to-ship. Across four
planks, the pirates rushed the merchants. With unlimited
resurrection compared to the merchant’s one resurrection, the pirates had the upper hand. The rapier fighters
rotated after each fight so everyone had a turn at being
a pirate. Even today’s rain couldn’t dampen the fighters
spirits and ruin their fun.
Æthelmarc Known World Ladies’
Treasure Chest Tournament
Twenty-six female rapier fighters competed Thursday
for a treasure trove of prizes. Prizes were donated by supporters, with the first place prize being a rapier helmet
donated by Marco of Marco & Krieger Armory. Second
place, age permitting, was a bottle of twelve year-old
scotch. As for the rest of the treasure, the ladies were allowed to pick and choose their own prizes. This was the
fifth year for the tournament to be hosted by Illadore de
Bedegrayno. This will also be her last year running the
event as her work has taken her to the West Coast, making
it more difficult to make the journey to war every year.
“It’s time for some else to take over and hopefully run
the tournament for another five years.”
The final bout in today’s tournament came down to
Annora Raines of the West and Amanita Villarosa for the
Middle. In the first few moments of the round Annora
took Amanita’s off hand, then in an act of courtesy and
chivalry threw down her off hand weapon and finished
Amanita with a double kill. The second pass began the
same way with Annora taking Amanita’s off hand and
throwing down her off hand weapon again. Finally Annora took Amanita’s weapon hand for the win. This is
the first Pennsic for the winner of Thursday’s tournament, Annora Rains. She was overcome with joy as she
accepted the rapier helmet from Illadore. “It’s been an
honor fighting with all of you, this is my first Pennsic
and you’ve made it amazing.”

Friday’s Big Battle: The Field Battle
And now, my lords and ladies, it’s time for the main event.
There will be five battles this year, with standard last-manstanding rules for fights one, two, four and five. Combat
archery and siege weapon are allowed in the last two fights.
Fight three, meanwhile, will be a “regicide”: affair: the side
which is able to kill the king of the East or Midrealm will
win.
What to watch for: The first charge. Anyone whose heart
doesn’t race during the first charge has no pulse.

Harp Merchant’s Swan Song
By Jack Marvell
Feature Reporter, Pennsic Independent
It’s a curtain call for Silvershell Musical Instruments.
Owner Albert du Croissy has decided that after 15 years of
serving customers at War, it’s time to move on. This will be
Albert’s last War as a merchant. He plans to concentrate on
selling his handmade musical instruments from home.
Merchanting can be challenging, he said.
“It’s really a lot of work for a merchant to get ready for
an event this big,” said Albert, who turned 70 today. “I
spent about five months in the workshop to get everything
ready.’
Merchants also have new requirements for insurance.
“All the merchants have to carry insurance, required by
Coopers Lake Campground,” Albert said. “ I don’t think this is
driven by the Cooper’s themselves. I’m not blaming them. It’s
the normal risk–aversion that carriers have to anything.”
Many of the merchants have banded together to purchase
a group-insurance policy, but Albert is concerned that what
it means for the future.
“My concern is that if there is ever a claim on any merchant,
it’s going to kill it for everyone,” he said.
“There was a lot hanging out there … there was a lot of
uncertainty,” Albert said. “That’s going to be a risk for all the
small merchants.”
Albert is not giving up on making musical instruments.
“A lot of people have been my loyal customers,” Albert
said. “I’m going to keep doing what I do here, but I’m going
to do more on the web.”
Pennsic takes a great deal of time and investment for a
merchant.
“This is by far the biggest event to do,” Albert said. “For
me to get here and see is well over $1,000. For $1,000 I can do
a lot of advertising on the web.”
There are also economic considerations.
“Costs are really becoming an issue,” he said. “There are
getting to be more alternatives to selling here.”
Albert has been crafting harps and other musical instrument
for a quarter-century.
“I’ve been doing this for 25 years,” he said. “Our daughter was in the SCA when she was in college. She wanted a
harp.”
Finding harps too expensive, Albert eventually found plans
and decide to build a harp for his daughter. Other people
liked the harp enough to ask Albert to build more. Eventually
someone offered to pay, and Alfred began selling harps.
The secret of building a good harp is “having good wood
and having a good design,” he said. “ It’s also best if you can
buy from the person who made it because they are the only
ones who can stand behind it.”
What is the perfect wood for a harp?
“Different masters prefer different woods,” Albert said. “I
prefer cherry and walnut. You have to use a hardwood.”
It takes Albert two to three weeks to build a large harp.
“There is a lot of waiting time,” Albert said. “You have
to wait for glue to dry, for things to settle in, for strings to
stretch.” Because of this, Albert attempts to have several
projects going at one time.

Mom, I’m Still Bored!
Lots of things are winding down all over Pennsic today as
people begin preparations for the journey home. This means,
unfortunately, there are more things to see than to do yourself
today.
The Youth Archery Championship up on top of Mount Eislin
begins at 9 and goes on until noon. Why so long? Not everyone
can shoot at the same time!
There is an East/Middle Youth Tourney in the youth combat
area from 1 to 3. If you’re not fighting in this yourself, come
cheer on your campmates or friends.
The traditional, big Field Battle with adult fighters begins
around 10 and goes on for a total of five battles. It’s fun to
watch from a slight elevation like a bit up the hill behind the
Battlefield— with all those fighters out there at once, it is bigger than some real battles back in the Middle Ages. It can be
interesting to see how the mass of people flows like an amoeba
or to watch the front line between the opposing armies twist
and turn until it is no longer a line.
Have you gone to watch the glassblower at work in his booth
on Bow Street? Earlier in the week the demos were at noon and
the even-numbered afternoon hours. Remind Mom or Dad they
can get coffee right next door, too.
Just for Teens
The Thrown Weapons is closing down at 1 pm today, so if
you want one more chance to throw, you’d better get up there
before then.
I’m pushing dancing for guys one more time. This time it’s
Middle Eastern dancing at the ME dance pavilion right next
door to the newspaper office. The class Basics of Egyptian Stick
Dance (called Tahtib) is at 2 pm. The dance includes mock combat moves. You will need to bring a “stick”— a 4-foot length
of rattan or bamboo (it does not have to be list legal) with a
diameter of 3/4 to 1-1/2 inches.
Late afternoon is the time to get to the Performing Arts Pavilion for an Improv Festival where the audience may also be
participating.
From 8 to 10 tonight, again at Performing Arts, the Known
World Players present “Forbidden Pennsic,” a Broadway musical-style show but with song lyrics that most certainly never
made it even to Off-Off-Broadway.

Armor vs. Thrown Weapons Demo: An interview
By Mary of Montevale
Reporter, Pennsic Independent
Wednesday afternoon I spoke with Colin MacKenzie, one
of the instructors for a demo held earlier in the day. Incidentally, Colin is also this year’s Known World Thrown Weapons
Champion and the Deputy Thrown Weapons Marshal for
Pennsic 37.
Mary: How did you come up with the idea for this particular class?
Colin: The question kept coming up in our classes and
marshals’ discussions—How effective were these weapons
(knife, ax, and spear) in real combat in period times? At least
one of our marshals also thought our demo might serve as
a pointed reminder (pun intended) to the heavy weapons
fighters at the Fort to stay out of our safety zones. [Reporter’s
note: The thrown weapons range is located slightly uphill
from the back of the Fort.]
Mary: What kind of armor did you test your weapons
on?
Colin: For today’s demo we made an articulated wooden
pell to simulate a real warrior’s body, and we put three different kinds of materials used as armor on him. There are so
many in-period variations in all three of these materials; we
decided to go with those available to us that are the closest
to SCA-legal materials.
The first was some sheet metal plate of 16-gauge mild steel.
Second was butted chain mail. Third was a piece of 14 oz.
heavy leather (there was no special treatment for this leather
beyond the normal tanning process).
Mary: Which thrown weapons did you use?
Our knives were Viking scramasaexes. Our axes were plain
tomahawks (we didn’t want to risk the Francescas on the
metal armor), and we had two kinds of spears: a leaf-bladed
javelin, and some of Dominic Seamor’s pila. Dominic’s pila
are made from rake handles into which are inserted lengths
of rebar with machine-sharpened points. The rebar stands up
better to the stresses of repeated use on the Thrown Weapons
range than replica pila points.
Mary: What happened with the sheet of mild steel?
The knife and ax dented the plate but did not go in. Neither
did the javelin. In period times, the guy wearing steel might
have been bruised or slightly injured, but his injuries would
probably not have been fatal. The pilum, however, penetrated
the metal and its tip went well into the wooden pell. Avoid
combat against pila when wearing mild steel plate!
Mary: I am going to guess the chain mail fared better?
Colin: That guess would be wrong. All three weapons forms
penetrated the mail with no problem. In fact, the tomahawks
left 2½ to 3 inch cut holes in the mail. Remember, though, this
was butted mail, not the riveted kind.
Mary: And the leather?
Colin: We had some real interesting results with the leather.
Against a single thickness of 14 oz. leather, all the weapons
penetrated and stuck in the wood. Against a double layer of
the same leather, only the edged weapons penetrated. That
would be the tomahawks and the leaf-bladed spear. The pilum
could not penetrate the double thickness of leather.
Mary: Are you going to try these weapons against other
materials in the future?
Colin: We are discussing further experiments with riveted
mail and cuir bouilli (boiled) leather. And we’re hoping to locate an old SCA-legal plate breast or back that someone would
be willing to donate to us “in the name of science.”
Mary: Thank you, Colin. It sounds to me like this demo
would make a great episode of a particular Discovery Channel show.

Mercenaries at SCA Wars
By Syr Kyppyn Kirkcaldy
For the Pennsic Independent
Many of us have seen or heard about mercenaries in the
SCA. If you are a “king’s man” or “royalist” you may revile
them, but in recent years they have grown to almost a third
of the warriors on the field at Pennsic.
I would like to give you a brief description of the different
kinds of mercenaries I have worked with in the Midrealm
Army command staff, tell a little about their culture, and
explain how some of them came to be.
How “mercenary” are they?
Some mercenary groups are actually big households that
play at being mercenaries as part of their persona in the
SCA. These groups may be paid with a six-pack of beer and
a friendly handshake. They are participating in the SCA, and
have every intention of fighting for their Kingdom.
A second group is a household or group of households that
have members in various Kingdoms. As a group they may
be fringe SCA and only get together for big wars, such as
Pennsic, Gulf Wars, or Estrella. They use the mercenary role
as a way to have influence on a particular kingdom, or just
to play in their persona.
The last group are the true soldiers-for-hire. They have
no kingdom alliances, and are open to the highest bidder.
Genuine goods and gifts are exchanged for their services,
and it can cost as high as $10-$40 per person. They may be
influenced by the numbers at a war, and they will most likely
side with the underdog in order to have the chance to fight
greater numbers. These fringe participants may or may not
be SCA members.
Some groups fit into more than one of the above categories
or into a “gray” level. Some groups’ motivations change with
internal changes or external influences. The Midrealm and
Eastern armies have worked hard to have relationships with
many of these groups. Every year is different. But one thing
we do know, both Kingdoms need these non-Kingdom Allies
to maintain even numbers. It has become a way of life.
A couple questions usually come up when discussing
mercenary groups.
“Whether you are just considering
buying or building a tent, or you have
years of experience, you will find that
this book …will save you time and
money.” –Tournaments Illuminated
Where did all these mercenary groups come
from?
While we may never know all of the reasons that mercenary
groups exist, we have asked enough questions to be able to
determine one large influence. A number of years ago, a group
of newcomers approached the SCA to play. The existing group
was negative, not very supportive, or indifferent, and these
newcomers decided to do their own thing. Time and time
again, we see where new people leave the SCA because no
one encouraged or supported their efforts. Some people just
go participate in another hobby, while some create their own
game. And thus, mercenary households are born.
Why do we need them?
Let’s do a quick breakdown of the fighting troops at Pennsic.
If you look at the Kingdoms and their allies you find approximately 1100 troops on the field at Pennsic. When you
add non-Kingdom allies, you have an additional 300-370
fighters on the field. Thus, not counting mercenaries, each
side can anticipate being outnumbered by more than half
that last figure.
Each Kingdom has their own history of working with mercenaries. Some Kingdoms have supported mercenary groups
more than others. These kingdoms recognized the value of
these groups early on and have been developing relationships
that encourage their participation for years. Some Kingdoms
treat these groups with contempt. They will not negotiate
or even consider these groups to have any value, and they
believe the nature of such groups’ existence is a negative
influence on our Society. There are many Kingdoms with
opinions somewhere in between. Each viewpoint has its own
pros and cons, but no matter what side of the coin you are on,
the fact is clear: mercenary groups are here to stay, and they
will continue to be an influence at large SCA Wars.
Every time we complain that we have to “pay” for a mercenary group, in reality we are paying for something that
someone else in the SCA did years ago. We will keep paying
for those mistakes for many years to come.
I can’t stress one thing enough. Support your new members. Get them involved and empower them to be positive
participants in your group. Otherwise, the next mercenary
household you face at Pennsic could be your neighbor.

Go Postal!
By Jack Marvell
Feature Reporter, Pennsic Independent
The Pennsic postal station needs your help.
Postmaster Dave Bailey said the U.S. Postal Service powersthat-be need to be reminded about the usefulness of a postal
station at Pennsic.
“They don’t plan for it in the budget, so every year … it’s
a fight to get them to understand the need for us to be here,”
he said.
While there are no concrete plans to cut the service, Pennsic
residents can help limit this possibility by calling the 1-800275-8777 and leaving feedback about the station.
“We’ve just been telling everybody to call and make a positive comment about how it’s needed.”
The Postal Service has been suffering from the same budget
problems that other government agencies do.
“They are cutting here and cutting there,” Bailey said.
The Pennsic postal station was originally budgeted out of
the Slippery Rock post office, but this became a casualty of
the progress of technology. The machines used at the Pennsic
station are old-fashioned enough to be portable.
“We had to go to a smaller office to find an older machine,”
he said.
The Pennsic post office has been operating at each War for
the last 20 years or so. There are about 600 to 700 pieces of
outgoing mail processed at the station each day.

I bring my cell phone and a back up. I call Mom and Loki

Space Presents
By Ursula the Widow
and Mary of Montevale
For the Pennsic Independent
Laughter and smiles filled the performing Arts Pavilion
on Thursday afternoon when the Pennsic Children’s Theater
presented “The Indeterminate Number of Dancing Princesses”
under the direction of Mistress Rhonwen Glyn Conwy, the manager of i Sebastiani. Mistress Anne of Framlingham assisted.
This is the sixth year of the children’s performance, which
was begun by Mistress Rhonwen with THL Tyzes Sofia. Some
children in Thursday’s performance have been involved all
six years.
“We’re very popular,” Mistress Rhonwen said as she managed yesterday’s dress rehearsal with 42 children on stage.
Because of the physical limitations of the performing Arts
Pavilion stage, she plans next year to divide the children into
several groups and offer a series of short plays.
When asked what he liked about participating, Douglas, who
played the King, said, “Everyone gets fun and fair parts.” The
other children applauded him.
A cast of 42 children, ranging from toddlers to teens, presented the adaptation of “The Twelve Dancing Princesses,” the
tale of a family of royal sisters whose shoes are found every
morning danced to pieces. The Performing Arts Pavilion was
standing room only with many children and many more adults
who warmly appreciated the show.
The director was remarkably successful at using the large
groups of actors for comic effect in the small space available.
The well rehearsed, smiling young people obviously enjoyed
themselves. Conlann, who played Michael, the hero of the
story, was one of the most confident and energetic performers as he discovered the princesses’ secret and wooed the
youngest, Lina, played by Corinne. She and the eldest princess
Genevieve, played by the much shorter Rose, also gave strong
performances.
Genevieve created a moment of improvisational humor in
the scene where she purchased a forgetfulness potion from two
bad witches. She took the potion and began to depart with her
money pouch, making the witches run after her shouting for
their pay.
In the final scene, the king learned the secret and awarded
Michael Lina’s hand. “Hurray, now I don’t have to buy any
more shoes!” he shouted. Then all the princesses exclaimed at
once, “But Daddy! We’re at Pennsic!”

In the last night of the War, look West as the angel of battle
will become the harbinger of peace touching the calm of Luna.
So shall the spirit of love and gentility show the true path of
all trusty people.
The International Space Station will pass over Pennsic several
times this War. It will usually appear low in the western sky, move
higher and eastward, and then disappear suddenly as it enters
Earth’s shadow.
On its final journey o’er the fields on which the people have
gathered, the wandering star shows its weariness by a lower
intensity of only –0.1. It rises from low in the western sky at
21:13:34 and journeys toward the southwest for two minutes,
reaching only a slightly greater height, and disappear at a low
height in the south after yet another two minutes. Its path
tonight will take the wanderer near the waxing Moon.

The question: What do you think is the meaning of the
great golden arches on the southwest horizon? Are they are
a sign of something?
Zachary Wolfhunter (House of de Londres, East): Oh yes,
the golden arches! They mean, “Mead here!”
Patrick McSmee (Port Tortuga, Atlantia): This is the nighttime Trimarian marker of the end of the rainbow where the
pot of gold is jealously guarded by the leprechaun of Erie.
Master Baron Gwilym (Gryphon’s Keep, Æthelmearc):
Throughout history, there have always been signs in the sky
that portend change. Perhaps this is one for us. It doesn’t seem
to be going away. Not yet anyway.
CuChonnacht O’Tighearnin (Shire of Stonecraft, Middle):
I’m not sure what to make of it. I thought I’d wait a while to
make sure it’s real!
Ellen Hughes (Incipient Shire of de Bermudes, East): I
thought they might be a sign of a visiting dignitary or perhaps
a new thrown weapons target.

On Tuesday night the forthright manly man of Pink Fuzzy Bunny and his beautiful,
bosomy bevy of brilliant bunny babes attended the Blue Feather ball with their
signiture style and elan. However, the cowardly, sniveling, base and degenerate
oath-breaking bunny-nappers did not appear. Good gentles, we anxiously await
your next communication so that we may again happily pursue a course of mutual
advantage in this matter. Your humble & etc Servants (till we duct tape you to a
