Introduction
This pack contains a selection of one-page leaflets created for children and
young adults. Our aim is to help raise awareness and to focus on safety and
other issues that may affect them.
All the leaflets, contained within this pack, are individually available on our
website at no cost. We provide each leaflet as an image and a PDF so that
you can choose which suits your needs for printing, sharing and
distributing. All we ask is that you do not make any changes to the content
therein.
To use this pack, click on the title of the leaflet you wish to view in the Table
of Contents. To return to the contents page, click on ‘Back to Table of
Contents’ located at the bottom (right-hand side) of the leaflet. To view the

Be Safe This Summer!
Never take a barbecue grill or stove inside a tent or
caravan to cook or use as a heat source.
Portable and disposable barbecues, including stoves
with a flame, can be dangerous even when cooling or
smouldering. They emit large quantities of carbon
monoxide (CO) which is a lethal gas that will kill in
minutes.
Barbecue grills and
stoves can be very
dangerous!
Make sure that you
cook a safe distance
away from your tent or
caravan.
Only cook in an open
ventilated part of the
field or garden.
Carbon Monoxide
You cannot see it,
smell it or taste it!
Enjoy the summer safely and
tell your family to BE SAFE!
Special thanks to UK Gas
Safety Expert, Stephen
Hadley, for helping the
#LOU community to raise
awareness of the dangers
of carbon monoxide. We
would also like to thank all
those who have supported
this campaign.
If you suspect Carbon Monoxide, call 999 and ask for Fire & Rescue Service, Ambulance or
HM Coastguard if on a boat (including inland waters) IMMEDIATELY.

Stay warm but SAFE this winter!
Carbon Monoxide
You cannot see it,
smell it or taste it!
Some of our homes and holiday accommodation
(lodges, cabins, chalets, caravans and recreational
vehicles) have a gas heater, stove or fireplace so that
we can stay warm and heat our water in winter.
Gaseous heaters and stoves, with a flame, can be dangerous as they emit
large quantities of carbon monoxide (CO) which is a lethal gas that can kill
within minutes. It is very important to check that we are living in a safe
environment and this includes when we go on holiday.
BE SAFE!
Check the ‘safety certificate’
and that the chimney has been
swept and all air vents are clear
and unblocked.
If you suspect carbon monoxide, open
all the windows and go outside - then
call the emergency services and ask
for Fire & Rescue or Ambulance
IMMEDIATELY.
Special thanks to Gas Safety Expert, Stephen Hadley,
for helping us to raise awareness about the danger of
carbon monoxide (CO).
Find out what number to dial for your
country. Example: 112 in Europe, 911
in North America, 000 in Australia.

Are you feeling sad and worried?
You are NOT alone!
Of every ten people around you, three or more have also been sad
and worried! This can also be called anxiety.
Why do people get anxious and worry?
Anxiety is a normal feeling and helps to keep us safe. However,
when anxiety is with us for a long time, it can stop us sleeping and
eating, put us in a bad mood and stop us doing our school work. If
we get worried and scared then it is time to talk.
Who can I talk to?
Talk to someone you trust. You can also talk to a school teacher,
a parent or an adult. Don’t share personal stuff with friends who
may not always be your best friend.
Surround yourself with kind people!
Choose friends who have something nice to share and say. Choose
friends who feel good to be around and who are fun and kind to
others. This also known as compassion.
Is someone making you very unhappy?
Is someone asking you to keep a scary secret? Speak out and tell someone who can be
trusted. Ask for help and don’t suffer in silence!
What else can I do?
When you become aware of unhappy feelings, take some action! Breathe in and breathe
out slowly. Be aware of muscles that aren’t relaxed and “shake it all about”! Try writing
down how you feel or draw a picture. Remember, you are not alone!
Share your worries with another trusted, caring person.
Why? Because you’re so very worth it!

Feeling Anxious?
You are NOT alone! - Anxiety disorders are estimated to affect 3.3% of children
and young adults; meaning 1 out of 30 individuals are suffering!
Why do people feel anxious? - Anxiety is a normal emotion, rather than a
weakness and helps keep us safe. However, when anxiety is with us for longer periods
and it begins to affect our sleep, moods, relationships, diet and studies - then it is time
to talk.
Who can I talk to? - Choose people who can be trusted, sharing personal stuff with
those who are more likely to remain long-term friends! Often willing to help, are
supportive school staff, parents/guardians, doctors and counsellors - but if they are
unavailable, do consider the excellent listeners at Samaritans (you don’t have to be
feeling suicidal!). Search online for anxiety forums and other supportive sites.
Surround yourself with positive people! - Often we can find ourselves getting
caught up in other people’s negative behaviours. Choose those who have something
nice to share and say, who feel good to be around and who are more positive about
life.
Being bullied, neglected or abused at home or elsewhere? - Please share
with someone who can be trusted. Seek advice – there’s no need to suffer in silence,
especially if you feel ashamed or scared, speak out!
Are your studies or exams stressing you out? - It isn’t in your teacher’s, or
anyone’s, interest for you to suffer in your studies or your health via self-harming.
Please tell someone so you can work on a plan to relieve the anxiety.
It will pass! - Anxiety and the thoughts that cause us to worry always pass. Ask
yourself “What was I anxious about a year ago or even a month ago?”
Relaxation Exercises and Emotions - When you become aware of emotions,
such as anxiety, recognise it and ‘take some action’! Breathe in and expand your lungs
slowly – hold – then gently exhale fully. Be aware of tensed and tight muscles, then
relax them one-by-one. If you’re lonely, reach out for contact or perhaps writing in a
personal journal can help you let go of the emotion! Consider joining a group or
exercising more.
Whatever you do, share with another trusted, caring person.
Why? Because you’re so very worth it!

Cool as ICE!
It’s so exciting when we get our first mobile phone! Now we get the chance
to download some really cool apps, play games, text our friends and more.
Owning a mobile phone also gives us the chance to become more
independent as when we go out you can still keep in touch with home!
Another cool thing about owning a
mobile phone, is that it can also
help us if we find ourselves in an
emergency situation.
What is ICE?
ICE stands for ‘In Case of
Emergency’ and is a way of having
our emergency contacts available
on our phone.
If we happen to be in an emergency
situation, and unable to speak,
having an ICE contact on our phone
can help paramedics and hospital
staff find out more about us by
contacting our family.
Icey says
“Be prepared!”
How to ICE your phone!
For example, add ‘ICE mum’ and her
number to the owner information of
your phone or make a wallpaper so
that it can be seen if your phone is
locked. Visit our website to see how.

Be ‘Internet Healthy’
“You spend way too much time online!” How many times have you heard your
parents say this? It can be so annoying but there are many reasons to be aware
of how much time you spend on your devices. The internet can be a wonderful
place and it can have many benefits; it’s an amazing portal for learning, playing
and making friends. However, like anything in life, balance is essential. Check
out these tips:
Eye Strain - Spending too much time on devices can cause the eyes to
become strained which can also lead to headaches.
Dehydration - Make sure you drink plenty of fluids as it’s easy to get ‘lost’
in a conversation, a game, or even study. This can also help reduce eye
strain and headaches.
Sleep - Ideally, shut down electronics 2 hours before sleep.
Concentration - Levels of concentration diminish within an hour and
beyond that, it becomes a challenge.
Anxiety - What we view, including the time we spend viewing, can increase
anxiety which can also affect our sleep, mood and happiness thoughts.
Hearing - The current ‘rule’ for headphones is a maximum of 60% volume
for up to 60 minutes.
Relationships - With information on our tablets and phones available 24/7,
we are mixing less in the ‘real world’. We have less eye-contact and
conversations that are necessary to keep us mentally healthy. We may also
have negative experiences from those we trust online due to bullying,
exchanging compromising images, encouraging self-harm, and more.
Keep a healthy balance!
