The local economy is boosted by the efforts of light manufacturing, small retail businesses, construction, tourism, home businesses and agriculture. Stow Located on Route 113, fifteen minutes from Fryeburg and thirty minutes from Bridgton, Stow is the gateway to the White Mountain National Forest through Evans Notch. Scenic drives, breathtaking mountain views, clear lakes and streams, wildlife and outdoor recreation opportunities including camping, fishing, hunting, hiking, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, mountain biking, canoeing and bird watching all make Stow a special place. With only 312 people in the 23 square miles of Stow, there just might be a larger horse population. Students attend school in Fryeburg. Stow’s most notable event was the July 1993 discovery of a 9-pound amethyst crystal at privately-owned Eastman Mine on Deer Hill. Though that mine is off-limits to the public, for a fee you may acquire a permit to a mine on the east side of Deer Hill and spend the day looking for amethyst, tourmaline and other rocks. LAKES BIATHLON The Olympics Come to the Lakes Region Bi means two and -athlon means contest. A biathlon, therefore, is the combination of the two physically challenging sports of cross-country skiing and precise rifle marksmanship. The first is fast, intense and physically demanding, while the latter requires accuracy and control--not easy with a pounding heart and heaving chest. During a competition, competitors must ski a specified distance as quickly as possible, approach the stadium, discard ski poles, take a prone or standing position on a mat, steady a .22-caliber biathlon rifle, control breathing, site the gun at a target 50 meters down range, pull the trigger and shoot. For each shot missed, either time is added or the skier must ski a penalty loop. Maine’s Nordic skiing heritage dates back to the late 1870s when Governor Joshua Chamberlain recruited 21 families from Stockholm, Sweden to help settle northern Maine. They brought their skiing tradition with them and skied for transportation, hunting and recreation. Though it remains a somewhat obscure sport, the folks at Maine Winter Sports Center (MWSC) are working to bring Biathlon into the limelight. This group is dedicated to “re-establish skiing as a lifestyle in Maine.” Their mission is to address the devastating health issues facing our youth population. One way they do this is by making skiing accessible to as many communities as possible. This past year they expanded their horizons by offering biathlon clinics and competitions during the winter and summer for middle and high school students in southern Maine and have recently created the Southern Maine Biathlon Club. So . . . can’t wait till Vancouver 2010 for the Winter Olympics? Never fear. The Greater Bridgton Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with MWSC and with Poland Spring as sponsor, will bring the first annual Lakes Biathlon to Five Fields Farm on Sunday, January 20, 2008, as part of the Winter Carnival festivities. The Chamber, looking for a way to expand Winter Carnival, which now includes a Mushers Bowl held at Five Fields Farm Cross-Country Ski Center in South Bridgton, needed an event that could occur during the second weekend and wasn’t necessarily snow dependent. Tom Gyger of Five Fields Farm will tell you that it was not his idea, but travel the trail with him and you’ll know he is passionate about the prospect of providing a venue for this Olympic style event. The spectacular terrain of this area lends itself to recreational sports. LEA, LELT and Tom would like to develop the area into multi-use trails that could host activities that can’t happen anywhere else in southern Maine. The Lakes Biathlon will provide an opportunity to try skiing laps and shooting air rifles at targets. A clinic will begin at 10:00 a.m., where novices can learn shooting techniques. Participants will be coached in shooting air rifles, in both prone and standing positions, as well as the finer points of strategizing a successful race. Informal cross-country races will follow. Typically, at a MWSC biathlon event, competitors start at specified intervals, ski a loop, return to the stadium to shoot five rounds at a metal knock-down target, ski another loop, return to the stadium to shoot five more rounds and then ski a final loop. For every target missed, the skier must complete a penalty loop. If there is a lack of snow, unless it is sheer ice, the competition can quickly become a run and shoot event, similar to the summer biathlon. Whether you are a recreational skier, an elite racer, or an enthusiastic onlooker, the Lakes Biathlon promises to be an exciting event to participate in or to watch. The range, parking area and viewing will take place at Fryers’ Field on Fosterville Road. Skiing will be on the lower portion of Five Fields Farm and Watkins Field, owned by LELT. Casco Fire Department’s Casco Days Advertised as “always the last Saturday in July,” Casco Days actually begins when the midway opens at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, 2008. The first Casco Days celebration was held in 1937 and was sponsored by the Casco High School Alumni Association. Today the Casco Fire Department sponsors the events. Several weeks prior to Casco Days, they piece together the red wooden frame work of the midway games. Food is cooked and served in the barn at the back of Casco Days Park. Volunteers from a number of local organizations work as the “carnies.” Special events include fireworks, a road race, children’s parade, and Grand parade, which bring family, friends and campers together for a homemade, hometown event. Waterford Flats Historic District Sit on a park bench in the village green and look across at the home of Artemus Ward, pen name of Waterford native, Charles F. Brown, who was Mark Twain’s mentor. Step into the Waterford Library, designed by John Calvin Stevens and son, John Howard Stevens. Or envision the ladies sitting on one side of the room facing their men on the other side during town meeting at the Old Town 34 Office and Meeting Hall in Waterford Flats. Of course, the ladies were not allowed to vote and had to keep quiet--surely an impossible task. Twenty-one buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Songo Locks The Songo Locks connect Sebago Lake to Brandy Pond and Long Lake. Originally there were 27 locks between Long Lake and the Atlantic Ocean. Songo Locks, constructed in 1830, is the only remaining one of the Cumberland-Oxford Canal. Today, it continues to be hand-operated, usually between May 1st and October 15th. Pass through Songo Locks on your own boat or take a ride on the replica Mississippi stern paddle wheeler, Songo River Queen’s, two and a half hour river trip. Denmark Bicentennial Park The soothing sound of water flowing over the dam at the foot of Moose Pond greets visitors at Denmark Bicentennial Park on Main Street. Fish near the dam, canoe or kayak from the park, play on the grass, picnic under the shelter or ice skate on the pond--all are possibilities in this easily accessible public green space in village of Denmark. Deertrees Theatre and Cultural Center Built of hemlock in an Adirondack Style, the Deertrees Theatre and Cultural Center in Harrison, first opened its doors in 1936. Today the theatre offers an eclectic schedule of events for young and old from late June until early September. Broadway stars and local would-be actors as well as world-acclaimed musicians and aspiring students have graced the stage of Deertrees Theater. Hemlock Bridge Built in 1857, of Paddleford truss construction with supporting laminated wooden arches, Hemlock Bridge in Fryeburg is a quaint and charming reminder of days gone by. The 109-foot long covered bridge spans the old course of the Saco River. Though reinforced in 1988 so you can drive across the bridge, it’s more fun to walk across. Take time to admire the work of our forefathers, peer at the river and read the graffiti on Maine’s oldest remaining covered bridge. Frances Howe Murals Tucked away in the rear of the first floor of the historic Wales and Hamblen building on Main Street in Bridgton are the Frances Howe murals, considered to be Rufus Porter’s finest work. Painted in 1838, the murals were rescued from the Howe home in Massachusetts prior to its demolition in 1965. They are the only murals known to be signed by both Rufus Porter and his son, Stephen Twombly Porter. More information is available at the Rufus Porter Museum in Bridgton.
