About A Beka Virtual Classroom
A Beka Academy’s Virtual Classroom is a distance-learning program that provides
over 6,500 hours of classroom instruction by Pensacola Christian Academy master
teachers in traditional classroom settings. A Beka Academy’s Virtual Classroom was
developed, field tested, and introduced in 1985 utilizing the highly successful A Beka
Book curriculum. Two programs are available for churches and schools: the Supplemental Video Program and the Master Video Program.
Supplemental Video Program
The Supplemental Video Program delivers a distance-learning program that
creates a virtual classroom for schools choosing individual grades or courses for
grades K4–12.
Master Video Program
The Master Video Program provides a distance-learning program that creates
a virtual classroom for schools choosing video instruction for all grades K4–12.
Mission
The primary objective and purpose of A Beka Academy is to provide a distinctively
Christian distance-learning program for students in kindergarten, elementary, and
high school. This innovative program of study trains students in the knowledge of
God and the Christian way of life, and gives an excellent academic education.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Why should I use the Video Program in my school? With A Beka Video Program,
you can
• offer classes without having a physical teacher on site
• operate a more affordable school
• provide teacher training
• provide a substitute teacher
• provide excellence in education from a Christian perspective
2. How do I start a video school? It’s easier than you think, and our resources can
help. Call or e-mail for advice from your local Field Representative, or talk to our
school representatives who are there to answer your questions and address any
concerns. Valuable information is available on our website, too.
3. When should I sign up for the Video Program? The ordering process should start
in May but may be started any time during the summer. Streaming subscriptions
can be started any time during the year.
4. How much of each day’s total classroom time is video instruction? Approxi-
mately 3 hours of the total kindergarten or elementary classroom day is spent
viewing video. Most teaching sessions are 15–20 minutes for elementary level and
40–45 minutes for secondary levels. Sessions are separated by times for lunch, physical education, recess or breaks, student seatwork, reading, and homework check.
5. Is there a schedule prepared that tells us when and how to operate the video
school? Yes. Video Manuals (highly recommended for each grade or course) con-
tain a complete daily schedule for the on-site teacher to follow, providing all the
necessary instruction for student and teacher preparation. (See samples online.)
6. What qualifications are necessary for the on-site teacher? Ideally, the on-site
teacher should have college training as an instructor, along with a genuine love
and concern for children.
7. Can an experienced on-site elementary teacher handle several grades? Yes. The
program is designed specifically with that concept in mind. Most successful video
schools use at least one teacher’s helper once their enrollment reaches 20 students. Kindergarten students require extra attention until they learn classroom
habits and procedures.
8. How many courses can a secondary teacher handle on video? One secondary
teacher can handle two courses per class period, perhaps three if there are not
more than 15 students in the three courses.
9. Can our students receive an accredited education through A Beka Academy?
Yes, Master Video Schools may qualify for this additional service. See Accredited
Enrollment Plan, p. 16, for details.

Keys to Success
Equipping Your Classroom for Learning
To receive the full benefit of the virtual classroom, use the following keys to unlock
the door to your successful Christian school. In addition, an instructional video is
available online at www.abekaacademy.org/ChristianSchool/InstructionalVideo.aspx.
Key 1—Staffing
There is no substitute for an on-site teacher experienced in traditional classroom
instruction; however, the number of teachers and helpers may vary with the size of
your school.
A.Plan for one teacher and one assistant for every 20–25 students—Early in
the school year, the assistant should spend mornings with the kindergarten
students teaching them the basic habits of paying attention, listening, and following directions. Later, less time can be spent with the children as they learn
to follow the video teacher.
B. Utilize others outside your classroom—Given proper guidance by the on-site
teacher, a mother or a lady from the church makes an excellent assistant.
C. Utilize your students—Under supervision of the on-site teacher, a student
can monitor the video progress in each class, as well as distribute and collect
homework, seatwork, and test papers.
D.Plan for your teachers’ education and success—The annual Summer Sem-
inar at Pensacola Christian College provides a valuable source of training in
philosophy and methods that make a successful A Beka Academy Video school.
All new video school teachers are encouraged to attend.
Key 2—Right Classroom Equipment
The following is a list of suggested equipment:
A.DVD
• Recommended minimum 20" TV.
• DVD Player should be DVD-9 compatible or higher.
B. Streaming
• Recommended minimum 20" viewing screen. PC Monitor or TV with
compatible PC audio and video input, or a projector. (Individual student’s streaming requires individual computer for each student.)
• Requires high speed Internet access.
• Recommended each computer simultaneously running video streaming
have access to 1 Mbps bandwidth.
C. Sound Control—If your school is in one large room that is divided into several individual class areas, the dividers should be made of a sound-absorbing acoustical material. (Plywood dividers that have been carpeted provide a
practical solution.) Carpeting on the floor also helps to absorb sound.
Individual student headphones (optional) are successful in eliminating most
outside sound and keeping the student’s attention on the teacher.

Keys to Success
A TV or computer with an earphone or headphone jack can accommodate
a 4-, 6-, or 8-headphone volume control jack box that allows the student to
select a comfortable listening level.
If the TV or computer does not have a headphone jack, a headphone amplifier unit will need to be connected to the audio output of the video player
or computer. These amplifier units typically have 4 or 6 built-in headphone
jacks, so a headphone jack box would not be necessary unless additional
headphones need to be connected to a single TV or computer for a larger
class.
D. A Teacher Lectern for each class is helpful for laying out manuals for easy
reference.
E. Student Desks
F. Chalkboard and Bulletin Boards—Chalkboard space equal to at least 30" by
42" per class is best. Classroom dividers can serve as space for bulletin boards.
Key 3—Proper Classroom Atmosphere
The most successful school programs have set out to establish a traditional classroom
atmos­phere conducive to learning and requiring student participation and accountability from the beginning. The classroom should be prepared for efficient operation
and control so that learning can take place in an orderly manner.
A.Give proper attention to video teacher—The video teacher should be considered actually present in your classroom, in person, to teach each class.
B. Determine best placement of desks—Arrange students’ desks for maximum
attention to the teacher and minimum distraction from other students. (See
Sample Floor Plans below.)

Accredited Enrollment Plan (optional—Master Video Program only)
A Beka Academy is accredited by the following
organizations:
FLORIDA ASSOCIATION
OF CHRISTIAN COLLEGES & SCHOOLS
Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools
Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools
Students in K5–grade 12 can enroll in an Accredited Enrollment Plan to receive the
benefits of an accredited transcript and diploma from A Beka Academy. This option is
available for students in the Master Video Program only.
A Beka Academy offers the Accredited Enrollment Plan as an additional service for
schools within the United States. Your school continues to offer A Beka Academy video
courses, and students remain enrolled and pay tuition in your video school. You send
us the graded work and progress reports for each video student who chooses to enroll
in the Accredited Program. Individual student enrollment does not imply accreditation of any video school; however, A Beka Academy can validate individual student work
and provide accredited services to students in your school.
Enroll full year students in the Accredited Program by October 1, or by February 1 for
second semester students. We will provide all the necessary materials for your accredited enrollments.
An annual per-student fee of $200 will be assessed for each participating student.
Students will be graded according to the standard A Beka Academy grade scale and
must be full time students with A Beka Academy.

How the Accredited Enrollment Plan Works
A Beka Academy provides
• progress reports for submitting academic progress to A Beka Academy.
• report cards at the end of each grading period (available online).
• high school diploma following completion of the 24-credit graduation
requirements. (See p. 17 for details.)
• an official accredited transcript sent upon request.†
• assessment and validation of student work.
• plan of study (available online).
• available Accredited Enrollment Plan.
Your school should
• complete an Accredited Enrollment Application form for each participating student. (Contact A Beka Academy for more information and an Accredited Enrollment Application.)
• send transcripts to A Beka Academy showing previous schoolwork for each
student enrolling.
• grade student work and record grades on provided progress reports.
• mail completed progress reports and required work to A Beka Academy.
