Throughout the tournament, Canes Youth and Amateur Hockey Coordinator Shane Willis will be blogging here to offer insight on the team's play, recapture countless experiences from the historic city, tell tales and triumphs of individual players and more! You can also follow along with the team on Twitter for in-game updates and photos from the tournament! Shane Willis Thanks for reading, and check back often! The Champs Return to Quebec Friday, 02.10.12 / 10:00 a.m. For the 11th consecutive year, the Carolina Hurricanes are sending a team to the Quebec International Pee Wee Hockey Tournament. The Pee Wee team includes 18 youth hockey players ages 11 and 12 from the Carolinas, who will be led and coached by the Canes Youth and Amateur Hockey Coordinator Shane Willis. Throughout the tournament, you can keep up with the team two ways: Willis will be blogging to offer insight on the team’s play, recapture countless experiences from the historic city, tell tales and triumphs of individual players and more. You can also follow the Jr. Hurricanes on Twitter for in-game updates, photos from daily experiences and more. Last season the Carolina Jr. Hurricanes dominated the Quebec Pee Wee International B Bracket in 2011 and came home with the gold for its first championship in this prestigious tournament. This year, they have been moved up to the AA Bracket. 2012 marks the 53rd anniversary of the Tournoi International de Hockey Pee-Wee de Quebec. The tournament hosts over 2,000 youth players who will play in front of 200,000 fans over an 11-day period. In addition to competing in the prestigious tournament, the players will be roomed with billet families in Quebec City and fully entrenched in the French-Canadian culture. Ties to the Hurricanes are seen all over the tournament program. Ron Francis played for Sault Ste. Marie two consecutive years in 1975-76. Chad LaRose and Tim Gleason battled against each other one year as LaRose was with Detroit Compuware and Gleason was with Detroit Little Caesars. Drayson Bowman played in 2001 along with Derek Joslin and Brett Sutter. Bowman and Jiri Tlusty played in 2002. Also, Canes Vice President and Assistant General Manager Jason Karmanos and TV color man Tripp Tracy competed in the Quebec tournament. Thanks for reading, and come back often! Bonjour from Quebec Friday, 02.10.12 / 12:00 p.m. The Jr. Hurricanes are gearing up for their first tournament game. We had a great trip up on Wednesday with no delays or problems. We were extremely proud of our boys when a flight attendant said we were the best behaved group she had ever seen! We started our day on Thursday with an enthusiastic practice. The boys were excited and ready to go. After a great lunch at Mike's Restaurant, we headed to our first exhibition game against Beaubourg. The boys came out flying and controlled the play early but couldn't solve the Beaubourg goalie. A late goal by Beaubourg gave them a 1-0 lead. The airplane legs showed up in the second, and we fell behind 3-1 with a goal by Skyler Brind'Amour to keep us alive. We finished with a spirited effort and scored our second at the buzzer. Despite the 3-2 loss, it was overall a good start to our trip, and everyone is excited about the real test today when we will face the Basse Laurentide East at the Colisee. You can watch the game and entire tournament online for just $30! Monday, 02.13.12 / 9:00 a.m. Canes storm the Colisee! Friday marked the first day of tournament play as we prepared to take on Basse-Laurentides Est Conquérants, a team from Canada. It would be our first game in Class AA. The team started off the day with a brisk walk around the city (30 degrees) to get the legs going. The boys then had an hour to spend with their families and let the Moms get their much needed hugs. After a team lunch it was headed to the Colisee for the game. We stormed the ice and got an early lead with a goal from Perry Winfree. The Jr. Canes skated hard and took a 1-0 lead into the locker room. The second period was a chess match with the momentum swinging back and forth, but the score remained 1-0 after two periods. The Basse Laurentine came out strong in the third and had some great chances. Britt League stole the show with an unbelievable save doing the splits and a highlight-reel glove save late in the game. The boys tightened up defensively and skated to a 1-0 victory. We finished our day with a victory dinner with our parents, billets and teammates at MountTourbillon. Saturday was a day off, and we played some pond hockey and let the boys enjoy the city. We faced our arch rivals from Hershey in a exhibition game Sunday. Our next tournament game is not until Friday the 17th at 9:15 am. 117 Au revoir! It was also another spirited effort from the team, and we came away with a 3-1 win! Goals by Riley Johnson, Christian Roble and Colby Pederson gave the Jr. Canes the victory. After coming off a decisive win vs. an elite team from Slovakia, the boys were geared up for Lakeshore. The game was intense right from the drop of the puck and the canes took the lead with a goal from Kyle Conover. Lakeshore stormed back and tied it late in the first. The battle carried on into the second and the canes fell behind by 1 headed to the locker room. The boys dug deep and came out skating in the third. With 6 minutes left Colby Pederson tied the game with a great shot. The action continued back and forth with Lakeshore tipping in a goal with only 1:30 left on the clock. A last minute charge was not enough for the Canes. A disappointing loss for the boys, but we are extremely proud of their efforts. We will finish our time with some fun in the snow with our billet families. We will arrive home on Monday ready for some home cooking. See you all soon. © PHOTO K ARL TREMBLAY 122 English version Fascinated Grand father If it is necessary to believe his coach, Skyler Brind' Amour skates in dad's grooves Rod. For lack of having the support of his father, Rod, yesterday, the young Skyler Brind' Amour could count on the support of his grandfather, Bob, coming down from Campbell River, in British Columbia. The grandfather was thus in the first seats to see the victory of the JR Hurricanes by the score of 1-0 on the Conquérants des Basses-Laurentides Est. Bob Brind' Amour is not for its first journey there to see evolving his grandson, this year. " We spent six weeks in North Carolina, in November and December, and followed him in two tournaments, one to Nashville (Tennessee) and the other one in Virginia. " I also saw some games at home. All in all, I saw him about ten times ", he explains in perfect French, him who is native of the Outaouais region. To pursue the tradition Fanatic of hockey, Mr Brind' Amour hopes it can offer a part of what it offered to Rod being younger, having acted as a coach for his son at the pee-wee and bantam levels. When he does not evolve with the program of the JR Hurricanes, Skyler has his father Rod for coach. The grandfather thus admits to try to play sometimes the mediator. " Rod must be fair with everybody. Rod likes sometimes having my ideas, if necessary. The young Skyler listens more the grandfather than the father listen to sometimes more. It is for that that Rod likes when I am around and I spend messages without that they come from him. " The presence of the grandfather does not displease either to Skyler. " I like whether he is all around, it is pleasant. He knows many thing on hockey ", the one admits who wears the no 17 like his father. Rod number 2 There is only the number which is common to Rod and Skyler Brind' Amour. His coach, Shane Willis, who evolved with the father with the Hurricanes, sees effectively many similarities between both. " He looks like enormously his father. For a 12-year-old, he is very intelligent on the ice. He excels also on face off, quite as his father. " He is also very quiet, but when he jumps on the ice, he appears to work. He is very dedicated. " His grandfather thinks of the same thing of it. " Skyler has many similarities with Rod. In every evening, he throws lead pucks. He is fascinated. " Rod Brind'Amour was not of the first game of his son, yesterday, because it accompanied her daughter, Briley, in a tournament of volleyball. He could however turn up in Quebec in the next days. A maxim which seems to stick perfectly on Skyler Brind' Amour, the son of Rod, who played during 22 seasons in the national Hockey League. " Tyler looks like his father a lot ", explained Shane Willis, General Manager and Head Coach of the Carolina Jr Hurricanes and the ex-team-mate of Brind'Amour in the NHL. " Even if he is only 12 years old, he is very intelligent with the puck. Like his father, he excels at the face-off, he has an excellent vision of the game, something exceptional for a young person of this age, and he is always very intense. Outside of the ice rink, he is someone of reserved and of peace, exactly as was his father. " Informed about comments of his trainer, Skyler did not seem surprised at all to hear them. Several persons - to begin with his mother - have already said to him that his style and his temperament are similar to his father’s. The young hockey player admitted that he wants to follow his father’s tracks. " It is certain that I would like to become the hockey player that he was. " He recognizes that he is really lucky to be able to count on two ex NHL players to help him in his learning. " It is extraordinary. Both really know what they are doing. I thus know that they are always going to tell me the right things which will allow me to improve and to reach the next level. " Is there any pressure to be the son of a famous hockey player? "No", answers Skyler, adding that his only goal when he jumps on the ice rink is to work hard and to do the best that he can. " It is even pleasant. My father is always there to support and help me. And he indeed understands what I feel or what I have to go through. " Skyler, which is for his first presence in the Québec Pee-Wee Tournament , was very nervous at the time of jumping on the ice rink of the Colisée Pepsi, an amphitheater much bigger and more noisy than the rinks where he had the opportunity to evolve in his young career. The match was memorable because besides having been able to savor the victory, he played under the eyes of his grandfather Bob Brind' Amour. NOTE: Merci spécial à MM.
