June 12 2016 - St. Francis Xavier Church
607 Sycamore Street, Cincinnati, Ohio 45202 • 513-721-4045 www.stxchurch.org Saint Xavier Church INWARD REFLECTION PILGRIMS PACK FOR PERU June is arguably the biggest vacation month of the year. Many people back up and leave town after school is out or just because the weather has finally turned nice and our thoughts turn to travel. A few precious weeks of different scenery or perhaps exotic destinations fill our minds. We look forward to relaxation and to amassing stories to share upon our return. But for a few, this year’s vacation will not be for pure pleasure seeking. It will be for pilgrimage. A pilgrimage takes one on a journey in search of deeper spiritual conversion. That is just what fourteen people—several from Cincinnati and our parish community—will be doing when they leave later this month for Lima, Peru. The group will learn about the wonderful work being accomplished at our twin parish, the Virgin of Nazareth in the El Agustino community outside Lima. This Jesuit parish of 130,000 people offers sacramental and catechetical programs, early childhood education, job training, micro-finance, community organization, spiritual direction, youth and athletic programs to name but a few. Our travelers will be shepherded by Fr. Keven Flaherty SJ and guided by our own Mark Maxwell the Regional Director of Advancement for the Midwest Jesuits. The pilgrims will also travel to Machu Picchu and to the Jesuit works in the Andean Quispicanchi Province among other sites. Our parish community is proud to have been in a long-time twinning relationship with the Virgin of Nazareth Parish and we are most grateful to those who have decided that this is how they want to spend their vacation time this year. We look forward to hearing their stories and seeing their photographs so that all of us care share in the good work we sponsor in Peru. We ask God’s blessings upon the group, especially for safe travel, and the courage to be good ambassadors of our American Catholic Jesuit communities. We ask that God open not only their eyes and ears to the wonders that await them, but also their hearts to receive the gifts that the people of Peru impart to them. As they make their journey for two weeks beginning June 17, let us all keep them in our daily prayers. Vaya con Dios! —Deacon Tim Crooker, Pastoral Associate ST XAVIER PRAYER MINISTRY Please offer prayers for the infirmed of our parish: Doug Lange, Helen Sievers, Bob Fennell, Bob and Jean Scheid, Stephen Smith, Judy Dyer, Pat Corry, Barbara Meridieth, Sharon Dearwester, Gene Parker, Joan Perone, Tamie Faye Weissinger, Debbie Garnett, and Sheila Novacich. www.stxchurch.org PARISH STEWARDSHIP Sunday offerings for June 5 On-line donations for June 5 Week of June 5 $11,042.85 $ 5,268.00 $16,310.85 Please remember St Xavier Church in your will. St. Xavier Parish has sponsorship opportunities for their bulletin. Why Advertise in a Church Bulletin? Advertising on the Weekly Parish Bulletin is one of the best returns for your advertising dollar. The advertising expense is tax deductible. It is localized advertising; it’s in the area that you serve. Advertising helps promote your business throughout the community and with your fellow parishioners. The bulletin gives excellent exposure to the business person because it’s reaching more clients. Parishioners feel secure dealing with bulletin sponsors. THE PARISH AND THE BUSINESSES BOTH BENEFIT. If you do not have a business, but personally know of someone who does, please help the Parish by referring that person or business, or you can occupy a space by becoming a donor. A Representative from Diocesan Publications will be contacting potential advertisers of local businesses as well as professional people in the area within the next few weeks. Thank you for your interest and response. Please call the Parish Office or fill out the following information and leave it at the Office. I grew up just south of Youngstown, Ohio and entered the Jesuits in 2006 after meeting various Jesuits as an undergraduate. I taught Philosophy at Xavier University from 2011 to 2014 and also served as a trustee of St. Xavier High School. I recently completed my Master of Divinity degree at the Regis College, the Jesuit theologate of the University of Toronto, and was ordained to the diaconate on May 21st in Toronto. Though many parishes are not used to having deacons, they minister through works of charity and liturgical service since the beginning of the Church (1 Timothy 3:8-10; Acts 6:1-6). Diaconal ministry includes assisting at Mass, preaching, baptisms, marriages, various blessings, catechesis, and a wide variety of service activities. Today, two types of deacons minister in the Church: 1) Permanent deacons are typically married and embark upon diaconal ministry after many years in another profession and often jointly with that profession. 2) Transitional deacons, like me, are in their final stage of preparation for the priesthood and minister as deacons while completing theological studies. The transitional diaconate usually lasts about a year, followed by ordination to the priesthood. I will be ordained to the Jesuit priesthood in June 2017 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. OUR SINCEREST CONGRATULATIONS And many years of joyful love to …Andrew and Emily (Berger) Saksa who celebrated their marriage at St Xavier Church last weekend! Please remember Mary Volmer and William Jennewein who were buried from here this past week. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon them.
