WELCOME We are absolutely delighted to welcome you to this historic Ram Katha in Athens. Athens is known as the cradle of western civilisation and is renowned for being the birthplace of democracy. It was home to some of the world’s greatest philosophers such as Socrates, Aristotle and Plato; scholars who helped shape the world we know today. Thousands of years later, we could not think of a greater scholar than our beloved Bapu to recite The Ramcharitmanas in this ancient and wonderful city, through his teachings of Satya, Prem and Karuna (Truth, Love and Compassion). We would like to take this opportunity to whole heartedly thank everyone who has been involved and taken the time to organise this Katha. This is your Katha and we hope that you have a truly unforgettable time in Athens! WELCOME MORARI BAPU & RAM KATHA Morari Bapu is a renowned exponent of the Ram Charit Manas and has been reciting Ram Kathas for over fifty years across the world. The overall ethos of his Katha is universal peace and spreading the message of truth, love and compassion. Although Bapu is Hindu and uses ancient Hindu texts to illustrate his teachings, he insists there is nothing religious about his beliefs and calls for acceptance of all faiths. He is refreshingly practical, denouncing religious conversions and complicated rituals, instead urging followers to be open, in head and heart. His openness towards others and their faith is evident in each and every Katha, during which he may use an analogy from Christianity, recite lines of Urdu poetry or quote a lesson from Buddhism. As well as doing Ram Kathas, Bapu has devoted much of his energy in bringing together communities, religions, sects and castes, in advocating peace and harmony both in India and globally. At times of calamity in India and abroad, be it the Gujarat earthquake or Bihar floods or nuclear leak in Fukushima, Japan, Bapu has contributed generously to provide aid wherever possible. In his hometown of Talgajarda, Bapu has organised several literary and cultural programmes, honouring litterateurs, musicians, dancers, dramatists and actors among others. There will be volunteers there to help guide you to the relevant meeting points. In the event of the Fire Alarm sounding, follow the five points below: • Remain calm, leave immediately, do not wait around to collect your belongings. • Ensure the room is empty upon leaving and shut your room door. • Quickly evacuate the building at your nearest Emergency Exit - do not use the lift. • Wait at the designated meet point for further instructions from your fire marshalls. 2. EMERGENCY MEETING POINTS / SAFETY AND SECURITY 9 SAFETY AND SECURITY Athens is an amazing city and we know that you will really enjoy your time here. However, as with any other major city, you should make sure you take the necessary precautions to ensure your safety during your trip. Here are a few pointers to help make your stay a safe one: • Make photocopies of key documents — your passport, car-rental voucher, itinerary, prescriptions etc. • Avoid putting yourself into risky situations such as unlit, deserted areas at night. • Remember…. tourists are always a big target for any pickpockets, so always be alert to this when you are out and about. • Ensure that all your valuable items are placed in your room safe when you’re not there. • As the home of democracy, Athenians are very keen to express their democratic rights in the form of protest! These are usually perfectly safe, but we recommend avoiding them. 2. This way, parents who want to enjoy the Katha will be able to, as it will be broadcasted directly to the children’s area on a big TV, without worrying about keeping the little ones entertained or them not getting the Katha experience and listening to Bapu! What’s in the room • In addition to the TV and seating, we will be providing activities books, crayons, card games and a selection of children’s books. We hope these activities will spark family conversations about deeper topics, and encourage you all to share stories about our Hindu culture. What parents should bring • If your children have specific things that they like to play with, you should bring these items with you. • The room is not catered, so please ensure that you have sufficient snacks and drinks for your children. Don’t forget that we have planned for your children to be catered for at mealtimes! Please remember that your children are your responsibility at all times, and that this room will not be manned in any way. Ensure that you take all of your belongings back, and that you remove any rubbish you may have when you leave, so everybody can enjoy a clean and tidy space at all times. 5. CHILDREN’S ROOM CENTRAL ATHENS Central Athens • When the Greeks say “Athens” they usually refer only to downtown Athens, i.e. Sytagma Square and Ermou street, Kolonaki, Gazi, Keramikos, Plaka, Thissio and Monastiraki, the Acropolis and Dionysiou Aeropagitou street. • Undoubtedly, this is the place to capture the soul of the city and the essence of its roaring street life and relaxed life style. Syntagma Square & Ermou street • This is the most important square of Athens: it is a hub for most means of transportation and at walking distance from most of the things you will want to see in Athens. • On the east side of the Square stands the Greek Parliament surrounded by the National Gardens. In front of the Parliament is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier that is guarded by the Evzones, members of the Presidential Guard. • The Grand Change of the Guard takes place every Sunday at 11am. On the west end of Syntagma Square, Ermou Street connects the Keramikos archaeological site to Syntagma Square and is a very popular and busy shopping area. 6. THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN ATHENS 16 CLASSICAL ATHENS • The most important site and the symbol of the city is the Acropolis of Athens. Standing since the Bronze Age and rebuilt in the 5th century BC during the golden age of Pericles, the Acropolis has always served as the city’s fortress and religious centre. Next to the Acropolis hill is the Pnyka, or the “gathering of democrats”. This barren hilltop was the place where speakers and audiences alike would congregate. • On the hillside below the Acropolis, stands the famous Herod Atticus open air theatre, a Roman monument donated to the city by Herod Atticus in memory of his late wife. The theatre was restored in the 1950s and has since been used to stage cultural events in the summer months. • North East of the Acropolis are the imposing columns of the temple Zeus used to rise over the ancient city. Directly in front of it, and marking the entrance to the eastern section of Athens is the monumental gateway built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian, a great admirer of Greece. • The ruins of the Ancient Agora are located on the northwest of the Acropolis. This used to be the centre of the Athenian Government and of all political and public life during the classical period. It was used for commercial, political, religious and military activities. A walk through the Agora will give you a glance inside the heart of Ancient Athens. 6. THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN ATHENS 17 NEO-CLASSICAL ATHENS • Architecture may not be the strong point of Athens, but the neoclassical buildings of the 19th century are everywhere to be found in the city centre. The Neo-Hellenist style combining the European neoclassicism with a unique form inspired by Athens itself, was a great “hit” in the dusk of the 19th century. • Some of the most important examples of this architecture are: • The Sleeman Manor (now housing the Numismatic Museum of Athens) • The Royal Theatre • The trilogy of Panepistimiou Avenue: • The National Library • The Academy • The University of Athens by Danish architect Hansen. 6. THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN ATHENS 18 PLAKA, MONATIRAKI AND THISSIO Those three neighbourhoods are the most characteristic of historical Athens: • Plaka is located around the northern and eastern slopes of the Acropolis. It is one of the oldest neighbourhoods of Athens and it is exactly as shown in postcards: full of neoclassical architecture samples, small picturesque alleys and blossomed courtyards. There are many cafes, restaurants and tourist shops in the area – seek out a frequented local tavern to best enjoy the local food. • Monastiraki has its own subway station, is a neighbourhood attached to Plaka and is best known for its flea market set every Sunday morning in Avissinias Square. • Thissio is a very lively neighbourhood, full of bars, restaurants and cafes, and especially during the summer months, Iraklidon street is very popular with people sitting outdoors enjoying the view. 6. THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN ATHENS 19 ATHENS’ UNMISSABLE SITES The Acropolis of Athens When in Athens, you must visit the Acropolis, the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the Temple of Athena Nike and the Propylaia. You will be standing exactly where people of the most advanced civilization that existed more than 2500 years ago, stood. Ancient Agora On the north-western side of the Acropolis lies the cradle of democracy itself, where grand ideas were born. A complex site with a multitude of temples and public buildings, the Agora housed the city’s most important events from the Mycenaean era until late antiquity The Roman Agora Built during the rule of the Roman Emperor Augustus, this small but important archaeological site is located near Plaka, and is evidence of the fascination that Roman Emperors had for the city of Athens and the men and women who called it home. Panathenain Stadium Built during the 4th century BC on the slopes of the Ardittos Hill and partially reconstructed for the Olympic Games of 1896, it has been associated with all major sports events in Greece during the 20th and 21st centuries. 6. THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN ATHENS 20 MUSEUMS IN ATHENS Acropolis Museum Inaugurated in 2007, it is a purposely-built modern museum with a total of over 14.000 Sq.m. of exhibition space displaying all the marbles and statues found on the site of the Acropolis. Museum of Cycladic Art A museum that houses in two separate buildings approximately 3000 objects from all phases of Cycladic, Ancient Greek and Cypriot art, dedicated to the study and promotion of ancient cultures of the Aegean and Cyprus. National Archaeological Museum of Athens This is the largest museum in Greece. Its abundant collections, with more than 11000 exhibits, provide a panorama of Greek civilization from the beginning of Pre-History to Late Antiquity. The Byzantine and Christian Museum The museum areas of competency are centred on – but not limited to – religious artefacts of the Early Christina, Byzantine, Medieval and post Byzantine periods. The Benaki Museum The collection is divided among a neoclassical building on Vassilisis Sofias Avenue and a modern structure on Pireos street, which also hosts cultural events and temporary exhibitions. 6. THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN ATHENS 21 SHOPPING IN ATHENS Modern day Athens continues this fine tradition: with its bustling markets, high-end stores, boutiques and department stores, Athens is a truly grand shopping voyage. The best places for shopping in Athens include the following: Designer Clothes Kolonaki is the sleek high-end residential and shopping district of Athens, catering for the glamor pusses and be-suited entrepreneurs who are happy to blow their money among the design stores of Tsakalof Street and the jewellery stores on Voukourestiou Street. Ted Baker, Missoni, Chloe, Louis Vuitton and Ralph Lauren are all staples of this ritzy area. One-stop Shopping Attica is found on the fringes of Kolonaki; opened in 2005, it is the city’s coolest department store tucked behind the restored façade of a former neo-classical mansion. Of course, as befits its reputation as Athens’ premier department store, prices don’t come cheap but everything in here ranges from stylish clothes to homewares. 7. SHOPPING IN ATHENS 22 SHOPPING IN ATHENS International Brands International chains are found towards the Syntagma Square end of pedestrianized Ermou Street, which runs all the way down into Monastiraki. There is little here that could not be found in any European city, like Spanish outfitters Zara and Mango, Benetton, Bodyshop, M&S, but this being Athens, prices are often slightly better than in London, Milan or Paris. Souvenir Hunting in Plaka Plaka sits in the shadow of the Acropolis and runs almost to Syntagma Square. It is a beautiful area of pedestrianized streets and tangled alleyways, full of flowers sellers, buskers, café neon restaurants and souvenir shops – some selling kitsch souvenirs such as plastic statues of the Greek gods and Acropolis snow domes. However, among the back lanes off Adrianou and Kydatheneon streets, it is possible to unearth genuine antiques such as icons and Roman coins as well as bespoke handmade jewellery. 7. SHOPPING IN ATHENS 23 SHOPPING IN ATHENS Flea-market finds in Monastiraki The challenge when shopping in Monastiraki’s hundreds of near-identical little stores is to know which is which. This is the place for cheap tee-shirts and sarongs, but also the place where a careful look at the back of a shop may produce a spectacular icon painted by a monk from Meteora. It is worth remembering that if something appears too cheap in Monastiraki flea market, chances are it is fake. On-trend Undercover Designs: The Mall Athens With more than 100 stores ranging from Armani to Converse and Diesel, this is the place for shoppers who want to look good in double denim but can’t afford the serious bling of Kolonaki. There’s also a branch of the Attica department store in the mall. Cut-price Designer Bargains: The Athens McArthurGlen Designer Outlet The McArthurGlen Designer Outlet, which is about 30 minutes northeast of the city in Spata, has around 115 designer stores. The outlet offers reductions on fashion items of up to 70%. It is also conveniently close to the airport for last-minute purchases! 7.
