HERITAGE RESORTS
THE AUTHENTIC MAURITIUS…
Behind every destination, there is a country full of its own life, culture and riches
and Mauritius is no different!
The uniqueness of Heritage Resort’s brand can be found in its concept of historic
culture inspired by the opulent history of Mauritius itself.
In an intimate and welcoming ambience, our guests can live out experiences and
discover the soul of the island of Mauritius: the beauty of the landscapes, the
richness of the culture and the people...
Each Heritage hotel provides our guests with a luxurious and exclusive experience.
The hotels themselves have been designed in a way that is elegant and in harmony
with its location. Heritage Resorts intends to charm our guests with exceptional
spas, culinary delights and attentive services.
Within Heritage Resorts are Heritage Awali, Heritage Le Telfair and Heritage The
Villas. Heritage Awali focuses on the cultural melting pot that can be found in
Mauritius and our African legacy. Heritage Le Telfair emphases on the colonial
architecture of the original settlers. Heritage The Villas allows our guests to stay in
the luxurious privacy of a residence, infused with the charm and style of a past
colonial sugar plantation. Each part of Heritage Resorts demonstrates
THE ESSENCE OF THE FAMOUS
MAURITIAN HOSPITALITY

RELAX
IN COLONIAL BEAUTY
Named after the famous 19th century naturalist, Charles Telfair, Heritage
Le Telfair has been built in an elegant and refined style that reflects the grand
tradition of colonial properties on the island.
A Member of the “Small Luxury Hotels of the World”, Heritage Le Telfair is
exceptional in many ways: its butler service in the suites is one indication of
our conviction towards quality and a personalised service. Heritage Le Telfair’s
butlers have been trained by a representative of the prestigious Ivor Spencer
School of London; so that art de vivre and service level obtains perfection.
The hotel extends over 15 hectares of Domaine de Bel Ombre and flourishes
with tropical gardens that flow down to the beautiful turquoise lagoons.
Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Spa Resort has a superb selection of restaurants
allowing our guests to discover a range of flavours, including the main
restaurant Annabella’s, on the banks of the Citronniers River, with an open
and interactive show-kitchen and Gin’ja, a Pan-Asian restaurant on the beach
with a teppanyaki corner. The Cavendish Bar & Lounge is the ideal venue to
enjoy an aperitif, local rum, or a digestive in a relaxed piano bar atmosphere.
The large grounds, in which Heritage Le Telfair is situated, allows sport fans
access to a wide array of land and water sport activities worthy. Well-being is
also central to the hotel’s philosophy. Our spa, the Seven Colours Spa, offers
a multitude of treatments and experiences to relax and revive the senses.
5
THE HISTORY BEHIND THE HOTEL…
Charles Telfair, our namesake, once wrote: “This island is a
haven for the traveller on the route linking the nations of East
and West. As the waves that follow one another endlessly, so
there is a constant and abundant flow of visitors who reach
our shores and then leave again, and I receive them all with
great pleasure.”
STEPPING INTO ANOTHER WORLD …
Born in Ireland in 1778, Telfair accompanied the British forces as
a doctor during their conquest of Bourbon and the Isle de
France in 1810. He settled on Mauritius in 1811 where he was
stationed in the colonial service.
The path to our rooms and suites allows our guests a
panoramic view of our luxurious swimming pool and the coral
reef. In the case that our guests’ senses have not been revived
by their walk through the verdant tropical gardens, they will
certainly be stimulated by our rooms. Heritage Le Telfair
produces a romantic ambience, reminiscent of a bygone dream
world.
During this period, Charles Telfair was a passionate naturalist.
He introduced many new plants to Mauritius. In recognition of
his services rendered, his name was associated with the scientific
names of several plant and animal species, some of which he
discovered. Charles Telfair was a humanist ahead of his time
and died in Mauritius in 1833.
Annabella, Charles Telfair’s wife, was an accomplished water
colourist and illustrated many of his finds in her paintings. The
décor of the hotel draws on the collection of lithographs she
published as well as on Charles Telfair’s botanical discoveries,
which have been planted in the gardens of the hotel.
From the moment our guests arrive, the architecture creates an
atmosphere of tranquillity. A majestic circular room opens onto
a balcony that overlooks the Citronniers River, the splendid
tropical gardens and our villas.
There are 158 rooms and suites, which are divided into
pavilions, nestled among the gardens, all respecting the style
and colonial architecture of houses built in the 19th century.
Large French windows open onto a veranda, comfortably
furnished for our guests to relax. Attention to detail and the
quality of the finishes enhance the comfort and elegance of the
establishment.
Charles and Annabella Telfair were considered legendary
hosts, encouraging many of their friends and relatives to visit
and explore Mauritius. Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Spa Resort
continues this tradition of the welcoming hospitality of the
Telfairs.
6
HARMONY INSIDE AND OUT …
The finishes in the rooms set the dark wood floors against the
light tones of the panelled ceilings and dado rails. The fabrics
and carpets are all of selected natural materials, including linen,
cotton and wild silk. They have been made in soft colours,
light green, beige and light cappuccino. This decorative research
into the period’s furnishings gives the rooms a warm intimacy.
The large four-poster canopied bed in the suites gives a
romantic touch that enhances the drape of a light mosquito net.
The spacious bathroom, finished with earthenware wall tiles
and a mosaic floor with heraldic motifs, coordinates
harmoniously with wood and mirrors to create a warm
atmosphere. Honeycomb towels embroidered with colourful
orchids add an elegant touch. Behind a glass door decorated
with 19th century arabesques, the rain shower cascades in a
relaxing waterfall. Some rooms and suites feature a tropical
shower fitted outside in a private garden.

CULINARY DELICACIES
AT HERITAGE LE TELFAIR
Heritage Le Telfair offers a variety of dining options. Unique to
Heritage Le Telfair is our interactive cooking concept; guests
discuss their suggestions and questions with our chefs in an
open kitchen environment.
THE CHEF’S TABLE
The Chef’s Table is located at the heart of Annabella’s kitchen
and offers our guests an exclusive experience to enjoy a creative
menu of dishes specially concocted by the chef using freshly
harvested produce from our local markets, and served with
wines specifically chosen to compliment the dishes
THE CHEF’S COOKING COURSE
Cooking lessons are also available for customers wishing to
learn to cook Mauritian food. This is a multicultural experience
in which participants share experiences and compose dishes
together with one of our talented chefs. Their efforts are then
served to them for lunch with a glass of wine.
ANNABELLA’S
In tribute to Annabella, the wife of Charles Telfair, this
restaurant has been designed in the style typical of plantation
owners’ homes. Run as a ‘chic’ brasserie, with rattan chairs and
a traditional open kitchen.
LE PALMIER
Overlooking the pool and the ocean, this pool and beach bar
offers the ideal place for those who want uninterrupted
enjoyment of the sea. It offers light lunches, snacks, salads, ice
creams and refreshments, all of which can be enjoyed with toes
in the sand.
GIN’JA
Set on a stretch of white sand, overlooking the lagoon, this
modern restaurant is open for dinner. Pan-Asian cuisine is
served with a relaxed ambiance, the restaurant adopts a more
sophisticated atmosphere for a refined culinary experience.
CAVENDISH BAR
The name Cavendish refers to a type of banana imported to
Mauritius by Charles Telfair.
This bar offers a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for the enjoyment
of a cocktail, liqueur or the best cigars whilst listening to live
music. For whiskey connoisseurs, a menu of 100 single malts
exceeds expectations. This bar also offers a fine selection of
teas and cigars, a library and a billiard table. A colonial English
smoking room atmosphere has been constructed through the
décor of beautiful coffered ceilings decorated with the coat of
arms of personalities who have stayed at Bel Ombre.
Divided into four distinct areas, Annabella’s offers a different
setting every day. The chef presents a new daily menu each
day, offering both international and Mauritian cuisine.
9
ESCAPE
TO OUTER AFRICA …
Drawing on the cultural melting pot that is Mauritius, Heritage Awali focuses
on Mauritius’ African Heritage. The word ‘Awali’ comes from the Swahili for
a ‘return to the source’; this is reflected in Heritage Awali’s ethnic décor.
Perfect for friends, family or couples holidays, Heritage Awali’s huge range of
services brings it to the centre-stage. We support a huge range of land and
water-based activities, including a superb 18-hole championship golf course.
There is an exclusive kids club, where children aged 2 - 11 can have fun
adventures within a learning environment.
Well-being is the number one concern of our luxurious spa, Seven Colours
Spa, which performs personalised treatments. There is also the 3500 m2
fitness centre Umuzi Sports Centre, fully equipped and open from 7am to
8pm.
Heritage Awali hosts a diverse and delicious range of restaurants to awaken
our guests’ taste buds with every mouthful.
10
Our guests are welcomed by the sounds of the djembes, a
drum originally from West Africa, which immerses our guests in
a warm and friendly atmosphere. Space and contrast is
paramount to the architecture of the hotel and is a characteristic
of Mauritian architect Jean Marc Eynaud’s style. The ground
floor, of volcanic stone and terracotta tiles, is played off against
the teak parquet floors. Shingle roofs are set against thatched
roofs and shaped in the form of pagodas.
The African inspiration is clear throughout Heritage Awali,
through the warm tones of ochre, tan, saffron and brown and
through the dark Wenge wood doors and decorative copper
touches. The interiors decorator, Virginie Koenig has instilled
ethnic values in harmony with the tropical surroundings.
11
ROOMS
There are 154 Deluxe rooms of 52m (renovated in 2014), 5
suites of 100m and a 310m villa, decorated in a refined style
that emanates a feeling of perfect harmony through warm tints,
objects of woven straw and terracotta, wooden furniture, large
earthenware jars. Each room opens onto a private terrace, not
far from two infinity pools and a long white sandy beach.
Bathrooms have the ultimate contemporary design, with square
basins and oval bathtubs embedded with black stone.
A haven of peace, the spacious villa features a scene straight
out of the novel Out of
Africa, with a terrace, private pool and gazebo, here the
African style suffuses into everything, creating a peaceful
atmosphere, promising absolute tranquillity.

of the two Heritage hotels, as well as the Domaine which covers 2,500 hectares, provide
endless pleasure and leisure activities, all of which are supervised by trained and dedicated staff.
THE CONCEPT OF
TIMOMO & FRIENDS
Timomo & Friends is a unique concept based on the character of Timomo, a Green Cateau,
whose scientific name is Echo Parakeet, an endemic Mauritian species that almost became extinct
a few years ago.
The name Timomo refers to the Mauritian words: Ti is the local word
for ‘small’ and momo is a nickname that comes from the word
‘Mauritius’. Timomo is a bird, which goes in search of treasure at the
other side of the rainbow. This treasure hunt takes him around the
island and allows him to meet new friends.
Everyone helps in the quest and so, with these friends, Timomo
discovers that he possesses one of the finest treasures in the world, a
rainbow heart, in which tolerance, love, friendship, solidarity, respect
and kindness prevail!
The Mauritian identity of a rainbow nation and its warm hospitality
are conveyed through this concept that inspired our exclusive brand.
V.I. kids have the opportunity to discover a bright and colourful
world that is both playful and original.

THE FINEST GOLF EXPERIENCE
IN THE INDIAN OCEAN
Adjoining the two hotels is the magnificent 27 hole golf complex known as The
Heritage Golf Club which consists of an 18 hole Championship Course and a
9 hole Par 3 course. The course design is the work of architect and ex-European Tour
professional Peter Matkovich of Matkovich and Hayes, a South African architectural
firm of international renown.
Situated between mountains and the sea, the golf course is certainly one of the most
beautiful on the island with amazing views of the lagoon on one side and the hills of
the Black River Gorges Nature Reserve on the other. The naturally hilly landscape
features many lakes, streams and tropical flora, the natural fauna is prolific and includes
a wide variety of protected bird species and a family of deer!
The course is ideal for all levels of golfers with generous fairways and 5 different tee
options on each hole so that you can choose the one that best suits your level of
competence. For the beginners, juniors and those wanting to hone their short game
skills, the Par 3 course is perfect.
Facilities on offer at The Heritage Golf Club include a practice putting green, short
game warm-up area, double sided driving range, PGA accredited golf academy,
men’s and ladies locker rooms, a well-stocked pro shop and a wonderful restaurant
and bar overlooking the course.
AN ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE
GOLF COURSE
Created in 2004 in the foothills of Bel Ombre, the Heritage Golf Club was built
on a hilly site, crisscrossed by streams, rivers in an area previously planted with sugar
cane. The golf course gains tremendously from its natural topography. Irrigation comes
only from the collection of rainwater and runoff. This golf course has also been
managed in an environmentally responsible way for some years now: 100% organic
fertilizer is used for 50% fertilizer needed. The pesticide used has an outstanding
environmental profile with minimal toxicity to wildlife and to users. Finally, weed
control is done with coarse untreated salt.
27
THE GOLF ACADEMY
The Heritage Golf Club has a golf academy with a certified PGA professional. The practice facilities at Heritage Golf Club are
world-class and cater for all levels of improving golfers. These include a
9 hole Short Course (Par 3), a double-sided grass driving range and 2 short game areas. Video lessons are available for an
enhanced learning experience.
Coaching is available for both adults and juniors in groups or singularly. This truly is a great place to learn to play or to hone your
skills.
OUR GOLF PRO

and brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our Golf
Academy. He is French PGA certified and has taught at many
prestigious academies throughout the world, including those of

ENCHANTING...
LE CHATEAU DE BEL OMBRE
Le Château de Bel Ombre is an enchanting colonial planters bungalow, set in French
Gardens punctuated with ancient trees, this 19th century property has been tastefully
restored to its former glory.
Old-fashioned charm emanates from its antique furniture, beautiful panelling, high
ceilings, majestic steps and veranda.
Ideal for an intimate dinner of local Mauritian cuisine cooked using Domaine de Bel
Ombre sourced products. Le Château de Bel Ombre exudes an atmosphere where
dreams and romance reign supreme.
The bungalow was built in the 19th century, under the instruction of Sir Hajee Jackaria
Hajee Ahmed, a wealthy Indian who never lived in the bungalow. It was christened a
‘chateau’ due to its imposing size and structure. The architect, who designed the
property, also designed the Treasure House, in Port Louis, which has been designed in
the same Anglo-Indian Colonial style.
32
THE PLACE TO C...
THE PLACE TO B
The Domaine de Bel Ombre expanded its extensive range of leisure facilities
in February 2011 with the opening of the C Beach Club.
Located on the beach and adjacent to Heritage Le Telfair, C Beach Club
offers real sophisticated relaxation for all ages, both day and night, to the
residents of Heritage the Villas and Heritage Le Telfair and Heritage Awali
as well as non-residents of the Domaine de Bel Ombre.
The design takes a tropical and contemporary approach with a relaxed
Mediterranean vibe. Guests are invited to enjoy its wide white sandy beach
equipped with ‘love nests’, canopied sun-beds, deckchairs and also its
sapphire blue infinity pool that blends with the blue of the lagoon. The
wooden deck overlooking the pool and the furniture design give this place a
chilled lounge atmosphere.
It all begins with C...
There are two restaurants Coast next to the pool, where our guests can enjoy
light cuisine with their toes in the sand for lunch or Italian cuisine for dinner,
and Cyan, which serves Mediterranean cuisine in an elegant and relaxed
atmosphere. There is also the lounge-bar, Chill, which overlooks the beach.
Finally, we have our boathouse, Cabana, which offers a range of water sports
such as kite surfing, water skiing and sailing.
To ensure our guests’ absolute comfort we have hostesses to welcome and
care for our visitors. There is also a private dining room and changing rooms,
towels and beach service.
Special events are organized on a regular basis featuring DJs and other local and
international artists at parties or brunches. The C Beach Club is the ideal venue
for holding barbecues, beach parties, fashion shows and product launches.

FRÉDÉRICA NATURE
RESERVE
At Heritage Resorts, we offer our guests access to the Frédérica Nature Reserve
nestled in the Domaine de Bel Ombre, which is home to unique and protected
fauna and flora. Covering an area of 1,300 hectares, Frédérica rises to 550m
above the sea. There is a mixture of dry forest and coastal rainforest and the
unique views, combining hilly landscapes, rolling plains and waterfalls (including
the highest waterfall on the island called l’Exemple, 350m).
Deer breeding takes place in the Reserve and there is an astonishing biodiversity
of flora and fauna that has enabled the development of tourism activities in
harmony with nature. Some species that can be found have been introduced by
man, such as medicinal plants, fruit trees and shrubs, as well as indigenous
Mauritian species such as black ebony, Bois Pomme, resin producing conifers, Bois
Tambour and Candle wood.
The animal kingdom flourishes within Frédérica Reserve. The Reserve is home to a
large colony of bats (approximately 10,000), which are the only mammals
indigenous to the island as well as 3,000 deer, wild boars, monkeys, mongooses,
Paille-en-Queue birds and a few Cateaux Verts. Cateaux Verts are the
Mauritian Parakeets and are an endangered species protected by the Mauritian
Wildlife Foundation collaborating with the local governmental authorities. It is
thought there are only 450 Cateaux Verts left in Mauritius.
(Source: The Mauritian Wildlife Foundation)
34
THE FRÉDÉRICA CONCEPT
Frédérica Reserve offers numerous possibilities. There is a
selection of guided tours, which allow recreational activities to
be combined with information on the history and flora and
fauna. Frédérica Reserve promotes social responsibility in order
to conserve this natural heritage (only 2% of the indigenous
forest still exists on the island) and protect and preserve the
flora and fauna with the assistance of the Mauritius Wildlife
Foundation (MWF).
FOR LOVERS OF ACTIVE TOURISM...
In addition to guided tours that explore the Frédérica Reserve,
there are quad bike or 4x4 excursions, day and night safaris,
mountain bikes, kids discovery tours and organised trekking
adventures.
The reserve has a private lodge nestled in the hills that serves as
a stopover for excursions.
THE BEL OMBRE FOREST
The forest at Bel Ombre is one of 2% of original forests left in
Mauritius. It is considered very valuable, due to the fact 50%
of its vegetation is endemic or indigenous. It is a forest that
illustrates the transition from dry coastal forests to the wetlands
of the highlands and it consists of a variety of species - the
most common being: black ebony, olive wood, wood mat
(Labourdonnaisia glauca, Sapotaceae), rosin, iron wood, nail
wood (Eugenia fasciculate Myrtaceae), drum wood and
banana trees.
MAURITIUS’
NATURAL HERITAGE
Bel Ombre forest is therefore particularly important for
conservation of these Mauritian species. The Bel Ombre Sugar
Company and the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation signed an
agreement in 2009 for the conservation and reforestation of
the Bel Ombre forest.
JUMELLEA RECURVA
The Bel Ombre forest has the privilege of being one of the
few places in Mauritius, to have all the components necessary
for the natural habitat of the Jumellea Recurve, a white
flowered orchid previously considered to be extinct by the red
list of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
On 24 February 2011, a team from the Mauritian Wildlife
Foundation were delighted to identify a specimen of the
Jumellea Recurva orchid growing on the trunk a tree near the
river at L’Exemple Waterfall in the Dalsign hunting area.
Jumellea Recurva is native to Mauritius and Reunion Island.
While Reunion Island has a population of approximately 1,000
specimens, here in Mauritius, the species was only recently
rediscovered. In March 2001, 10 specimens were found. Then
in 2011, three more plants were found in the Pétrin forest, and
2 on Pouce Mountain. Other specimens may have been found
in the south; however, we will have to wait until they flower
to be absolutely certain.
35
DOMAINE DE BEL OMBRE –
HISTORY
The origins of Bel Ombre date back to 1765 when a concession of
2,200 acres was granted to Messrs’ Simon Rémirac and Claude de la Roche
of Ronzet. Bernardin de St Pierre, an 18th century writer, was the first to
mention the place in 1773. Nicholas Cere, the navigator, visited the site in
1782. Mathew Flinders, the explorer, anchored his schooner the ‘Cumberland’
in the Baie du Cap in 1803 on the way back from Australia.
The Bel Ombre sugar factory was built around 1802. The property was sold
to Mr. Callixte Chantoiseau in 1807, who in turn sold it to Mr. Charles
Telfair in 1816. Charles Telfair, the renowned botanist, left his mark on the
region that he developed and lived in between 1816 and 1820.
He was the first sugar planter to introduce agricultural implements to
Mauritius, which were quaintly called pioche bef at the time. He also
installed the first large horizontal mill in 1819. A pioneer in the field of
agricultural diversification, Telfair created extensive gardens and orchards at
Bel Ombre. At a time when social parity was far from advanced, he treated
his workers with great consideration and he paid particular attention to their
conditions of employment, housing, nutrition and hygiene.
Telfair died in 1833. Some time before he had sold the bulk of his estate to
Messrs’ Blancar, Waugh and Lesage. Telfair’s heirs sold their share to
Mr. Gaston d’Emmerez. The property consisted of 5,000 acres at the time.
36
The ‘Bel Ombre Sugar Estate Company’ was formed in 1833
for the purchase of the Bel Ombre, Beau Champ and Sainte
Marie estates. The new property then consisted of 8,233
acres. Three years later, the company was closed. Bel Ombre
became the property of Messrs’ Bélouguet and Monville; Beau
Champ that of Messrs’ Simeon, Paul and Augustus Eynaud,
and Sainte Marie went to Mr. Jules Ramp.
In 1886, 2,175 acres of forest at Bel Ombre were sold to the
Colonial Government and the rest of the property was sold to
Messrs’ Taleb and Mamoojee. Mr. H. Salemohamed bought
the property in 1898 and sold it the same year to Mr. Hajee
Jackaria Hajee Ahmed, who bought Beau Champ and St
Marie at the same time.
The property remained in the hands of those mentioned until
1910 but management of the estate was always entrusted to
Europeans. Mr. Hajee Jackaria Hajee Ahmed himself never
came to Mauritius, though he sent representatives (supervisors)
to see how the property was managed. These supervisors seem
to have had a penchant for the good life and for their harems
and they had a large colonial house built for their wives, which
is known today as the Château de Bel Ombre.
On March 3, 1910, Messrs’ James Albert Wilson, Eugene de
Rosnay, Edward Rouillard, Emile Sauzier and Oscar Pilot
formed the ‘Sugar Company of Bel Ombre Ltd.’ and they
bought the Bel Ombre, Beau Champ and Sainte Marie
estates. From 1910 to 1961, the company bought a number of
small properties among which the most important were:
‘Frederica’ in 1914, Bon Courage in 1934, and Chamarel / Case
Noyale in 1961.
When the Sugar Company of Bel Ombre Ltd. bought the
property from its previous owners, only 850 acres were under
sugar cane cultivation and sugar production was approximately
1,500 tons annually. In 1971, the Sugar Company of Bel
Ombre Ltd., searching for a new injection of capital, offered a
majority financial share to the South West Tourist Development
Company. This event coincided with the results of a feasibility
study on tourism opportunities in the southwest region of
Mauritius and also with a period of unprecedented social and
industrial upheaval in the country in general and in the sugar
industry, docks and transport sector in particular.
WHAT IS IN THE NAME OF
BEL OMBRE?
There is a lake on the Bel Ombre sugar estate, which is home
to a species of salmon-like fish called the ‘shadow’ (ombre)
and which the first tenant of the estate called Bel Ombre
because one of them was enormous. The name ombre comes
from the speed with which this fish moves. The ombre is a
handsome silver fish with a green or blue back, yellow and grey
stripe on its sides, dotted with small black spots, and a big
orange dorsal fin with purple spots between the spines.

VERANDA
LEISURE & HOSPITALITY
The VLH hotel group has six medium range and up-market hotels, a spa and
cosmetics brand, a championship golf course, a superb beach club, a late 19th century
Chateau-restaurant and manages the operations of fifty luxury villas.
The group employs 1,423 people and is a subsidiary of Rogers & Co; a Mauritian
diversified and publicly listed company. Previously known as the Veranda Group,
VLH unveiled its new name on 30 May 2011, thus beginning a new chapter in its
history. This name change occurred because of the way in which the group has
continued to expand its business portfolio. Over the last 30 years, the small family
business whose venture began with Veranda Bungalow Village in Grand Baie, has
become a major player in the Mauritian hotel landscape.
The name change is the affirmation of a policy of expansion and diversification begun
in 2004. The group has developed two areas of distinct and complementary
activities:
• The hospitality sector, which is the primary business of the group and is
represented by its two hotel brands; Veranda Resorts and Heritage Resorts with
an inventory of 686 rooms, and some fifty IRS Villas at the Domaine de Bel
Ombre and for which Heritage Resorts runs the daily operations and rental
management.
• The leisure sector, an activity that was added in recent years in addition to the
hotels, features most notably the Domaine de Bel Ombre, which includes the C
Beach Club as the latest addition to the group in 2011, the Heritage Golf Club
and the Château de Bel Ombre. Finally Seven Colours, established in 2004 is
its Well-Being brand and which is represented in all its hotels and is the premier
Mauritian brand for spas and cosmetics.
VLH practices responsible tourism that contributes to the well-being and
development of its employees and neighbouring communities, while taking current
environmental issues into account. Two areas given special priority illustrate this
commitment:
• Community Development
• The protection of lagoons

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
VLH practices responsible tourism, which contributes to the
well-being and development of its employees and
neighbouring communities, while taking current environmental
issues into account.
Two areas, that are given special priority, illustrate this
commitment:
• Community Development
• The protection of lagoons
Since 2007 VLH has allocated 2% of its profits after tax
(PAT) to these two priority areas, through the financing of
sustainable development projects for the benefit of the
community*.
OUR COMMITMENTS
TO SOCIETY
We believe our employees are part of the authentic soul of our
business and our promise; therefore we have built longstanding
precepts of CSR into our management of human resources.
Numerous measures that govern matters of health and safety and
continuing education are in place and special attention is given to
the well-being of our staff. In addition, we consider the
communities living around our hotels as our stakeholders.
Our hotels have a policy of openness and listening, and for years
now we have been collaborating with NGOs working locally.
For instance, Veranda Resorts hotels are supporting the
surrounding community through sponsorship and donation.
Veranda Paul & Virginie Hotel & Spa is mobilising efforts and
resources for the children of Grand Gaube by funding the
salary of a teacher, who is employed full time for the school
PTA (Priority Education Zone), Jean Eon. The objective of
the project is to provide an individual learning support to
students who have learning difficulties and to improve their
performance in certain subjects. Another example is the
collaboration with the Paille -en -Queue school that helps
children and adults from disadvantaged backgrounds who
failed academically.
Heritage Resorts is one of the few hotels of the region that
recycles its plastic and glass bottles through the Plankton project
(launch financed by Domaine de Bel Ombre Foundation).
Effective since December 2011, this project responds to both
ecological and economic problems. Its purpose is to provide an
environmental and sustainable solution to the issue of waste
management. Moreover, it creates jobs for locals, reduces carbon
emissions from garbage trucks and provides an ecological finished
product, which so far had to be imported. The Recycling Unit
currently processes around 1.5 tonnes of glass bottles and 250 kg
of plastic bottles per month.
41
OUR COMMITMENTS
TO THE
ENVIRONMENT
Putting environmental issues at the heart of our development is
a model towards which we have been striving in all of our
operations and through our VLH products. Traditional electric
lighting has been gradually replaced by environmentally efficient
lighting. Technical solutions enable better control of water
consumption, while reprocessing plants at the hotels use 100%
recycled water for irrigation and recycle grey water. Our golf
course is irrigated only by collected and stored rainwater. The
use of chemicals is controlled and limited to prevent any risk of
pollution; bio-pesticides and compost are used on the gardens
and golf course. Commencing in 2007 our employees were
made aware of the fight against waste and we started sorting
all waste at Heritage Resorts. Other examples of our activities
in this area include reducing the use of printed communication,
the use of socially engaged suppliers in the Blue Earth
boutiques and eco-friendly cosmetic products in our Seven
Colours Spas.
As far as our commitment to the marine environment is
concerned, which has been a major focus of ours since 2007,
we support the Reef Conservation NGO, which is active in
the field of protection of Mauritian lagoons and of raising
public awareness.
The new campaign “Respect our Coast”, in partnership with
Reef Conservation, aims at drawing attention to the fragility of
Mauritius’ coastline and ways to contribute to its preservation.
This NGO focuses on the protection of the marine
environment of the island through research, restoration,
education and training. With its educational bus project
(Mobile Marine Education Unit), the association puts marine
science and environmental issues within the reach of the general
public and students. This unique type of class is equipped
with fun presentations, interactive tools as well as laboratory
equipment. The project is part of a long-term partnership with
the association.
By means of these various projects we are part of the national
ambition to bring together the private sector and NGOs in
the fight against poverty as well as being engaged in improving
the welfare of children and community development. In
addition, we also act in full cooperation with the Mauritius
Sustainable Island plan, by aligning our initiatives in terms of
water and energy management with their aims, as well as by
funding NGO activities within the domain of environmental
protection.
* Background of Mauritian CSR: In 2010, the Mauritian
government made a law that businesses must contribute 2% of
their PAT (profits after tax) to social responsibility projects.
This contribution is subject to a set of guidelines and
procedures. Since 2011 a law has required companies to
devote 50% of this fund to the financing of projects in three
priority areas: community development, social re-housing and
poverty eradication as well as the health of children from
vulnerable groups.
** Since 2008, the Rogers Group has been a signatory of the
United Nations Global Compact, pledging to support the
Compact’s operations and strategies, and the universally
recognized principles in the areas of human rights, labour law,
the environment and the fight against corruption.
(More information on our activities in the CSR region can be
found in our CSR Annual Report).
