Montmartre village and its vineyard
This stroll opens the doors on an unsuspected historical
and cultural heritage. The charming sites include:
the Church of Saint Peter of Montmartre - the oldest in
Paris; the Allée des Brouillards and its chateaux; the Lapin
Agile, the oldest cabaret belonging to Bruant; the Moulin
de la Gallette, immortalised by Renoir; the Bateau Lavoir
where Picasso created Cubism; the Maison Rose in front
of which Utrillo used to paint...
The tour continues through the vineyard which is normally
closed to the public. Here, the history and secrets of
the vines dating back to the Middle Ages are exclusively
revealed. And then, under the arbour, it is time to taste
the wine: Le Clos Montmartre.

Department of “Objets d’arts”
from the 18th century
Reopened from June 2014
Visitors can discover the newly
designed museum layout and
collections, thanks to Jacques Garcia,
organised in large chronological and
stylistic sequences.
Period rooms, rigorously depicting the
interior in its original configuration
or recreating decorative ensembles
using authentic elements, bring to life
a world of luxury and refinement that
cannot be rivalled.
Using chronological segmentation,
each themed section has a different
approach: a history of styles,
understanding of uses, development
of techniques, evocation of important
places and people, collectors and

The work of Jean-Honoré Fragonard

The exhibition explores the different

theme of sentiment and the impulse

that inherited the gallant 17th century

Impressionism
From the precursors of Impressionism to those who
were inspired by it, many sites in Paris and its region
have been marked by great painters such as Monet,
Renoir, Sisley, Degas…
High point for 2015: the international celebration of
the 125th anniversary of Vincent Van Gogh’s death
means it’s the ideal time to visit Auvers-sur-Oise.
125th anniversary of the death of Van Gogh
Auvers-sur-Oise: the last days in the life of Van Gogh
Less than thirty kilometres from Paris, Auvers-sur-Oise owes its reputation to Vincent van Gogh who moved there
in 1890. In less than 70 days he created nearly 80 paintings amongst which were Champ de blé aux corbeaux (Wheatfield
with Crows), Portrait du Dr Gachet (Portrait of Dr Gachet) and L’Église d’Auvers-sur-Oise (The Church at Auvers-sur-Oise).
Vincent Van Gogh died on 29th July. He is buried in the Auvers-sur-Oise cemetery next to his brother Theo.

the world on a pilgrimage to visit
Van Gogh country. They discover an
open-air museum of landscapes that

many historical monuments such as

well as the Château d’Auvers, the
Musée de l’Absinthe and Daubigny’s
home-studio.
The show Voyage au temps des
Impressionnistes (A journey through
the Impressionist era) plunges
visitors into the atmosphere of
Haussmannian Paris and its cabarets.
It offers an introduction to absinthe,
the fashions of the late 1880s, train
travel and the famous Saint-Lazare
station, journeys to the coast,
painters and their floating studios…
Film projections, scenery, videos,
music... Everything brings this era back

d’Orsay
Paris Region Destination 2015 / 2016 • Destination Impressionism
(Orsay Museum)
The Musée d’Orsay has 24 paintings
by Vincent van Gogh that retrace his
artistic development between Paris
and Arles. They are a testimony to
the painter’s genius that led him
beyond Impressionism, to open a new
and singular artistic path.
The Parisian period is illustrated by works
such as Autoportrait de 1887 (Self-portrait
of 1887), L’Italienne (The Italian Woman),
Le Restaurant de la Sirène à Asnières
(Restaurant de la Sirène at Asnières) or
Les Fritillaires (Fritillaries).
In these paintings are the colours
and lights that Van Gogh borrowed
from the Impressionists.

The works created in the south of
France are celebrated in particular by
La Chambre de Van Gogh à Arles
(Van Gogh’s Room in Arles),
La Méridienne, La Nuit étoilé
(Starry Night) or the Autoportrait
de 1889 (Self-portrait of 1889).
From Van Gogh’s last few days spent in
Auvers-sur-Oise, the museum exhibits
major paintings such as Le Portrait du

(Napoleon and Paris: a capital for Europe)
From 8th April to 30th August 2015
Musée Carnavalet
This exhibition shows how Napoleon saw Paris...
and how Parisians saw their sovereign.
Napoleon’s interest in the capital never waned,
even if he had a complex relationship with the city.
As the main political theatre during the Napoleonic
period, Paris illustrates the complexity of this great
man simultaneously inspired by the philosophy of the
Enlightenment and a promoter of new absolute monarchy.
Nearly 400 works and documents (paintings, prints,
drawings, furniture, objects...) can be seen.

Le bivouac de Napoléon :
luxe impérial en
campagne et en voyage.
(Napoleon’s military camp: imperial
luxury on campaign and when travelling)
End March to end July 2015
Galerie des Gobelins
Napoleon spent a great deal of time
travelling or on campaign. For his
military camps and whenever he
travelled, he had a very particular
organisation that recreated imperial
etiquette.
His campaign tents were genuine
travelling palaces and his luggage
carried luxurious folding furnishings
and furniture: bed, table, armchair,
desk and toiletries were tidied away in
precious cases and specially designed
trunks.
Galerie des Gobelins
The exhibition offers a very complete
vision of the Emperor’s military camp.
His work and rest space has been
reconstructed under an original tent
dating back to 1808.

Imperial residence at Fontainebleau
Surrounded by 130 hectares of parks and gardens, the Château de Fontainebleau is listed as a UNESCO world heritage
site. Napoleon I considered it to be “the real home of kings, a house of centuries”.
Château de Fontainebleau
Ceaselessly renovated and refurbished, Fontainebleau
experienced eight centuries of continuous royal presence,
from the arrival of Louis VII the Younger in 1137, to the
abdication of Napoleon III in 1870.
Today, it still houses a great many treasures of the
Imperial era.
Napoleon I hastened to restore and refurnish the
chateau that the French revolution had emptied.
The Napoleon I Museum has an exceptional collection of
furniture, art, objets d’art, weapons, clothing, documents
and historical souvenirs that belonged to the Imperial
family.
The Sovereign Grands Appartements present the private
apartment of Napoleon I, as it would have been in the
First Empire. The Petits Appartements can also be visited.
They were inhabited by Napoleon and Joséphine, then
Napoleon and Marie-Louise.

Napoleon in Versailles
The world famous Château de Versailles is also the Museum of French History. It houses many testimonials to the
Napoleonic era.
Le Grand Trianon
The Grand Trianon, built by Jules Hardouin Mansart in 1687,
is without a doubt the most refined collection of buildings
in the entire Versailles estate.
After having commissioned its restoration, Napoleon
Bonaparte stayed there several times with his second wife,
the Empress Marie-Louise.
The current layout is very close to that of the First Empire.
The Emperor’s small apartments
Napoleon occupied these apartments for the first time in
1809, in the period that followed his divorce from Joséphine.

Joséphine and Napoleon at Rueil-Malmaison
The town of Rueil-Malmaison reveals authentic testimonies to the imperial era, particularly concerning Joséphine de
Beauharnais, Napoleon Bonaparte’s first wife.
Château de Malmaison
The Malmaison estate is an authentic
example of the imperial era.
Purchased in 1799 by Napoleon and
Joséphine Bonaparte, it became
their residence under the Consulate.
Joséphine organised many parties
and banquets there but between
1800 and 1802, their home was
also the venue for political
decision-making.
Furniture, tapestries, woodwork,
paintings and many collections of
period objects make the Château de
Malmaison a precious gem from the
First Empire.

De Waterloo à Sainte-Hélène, la grande traversée
52
(From Waterloo to Saint Helena: the big journey)
1st June to 31st August 2015
Musée national du Château de Malmaison
After defeat at Waterloo, Napoleon abdicated. Queen Hortense, his
step-daughter, welcomed him at Malmaison.
Aged 46, he was planning to build a life for himself in America. He went
to Rochefort-sur-Mer, but the two frigates ready to take him and his suite
to America never left harbour as they were blocked by English ships.
Having retreated to the Isle of Aix, Napoleon negotiated his surrender;
the British insisted on his exile.
Organised for the bicentenary of the fall of the First Empire (Waterloo 1815)
and the exile of Napoleon to Saint Helena, this exhibition evokes the transitory
period of the Napoleonic era.

Napoleon in Rambouillet
Around fifty kilometres to the south-west of Paris, the Rambouillet Estate is a 14th century fortified castle that has
been progressively transformed into a private home by the illustrious characters who owned it, in particular Louis XVI
and Napoleon I.
Château de Rambouillet
Within the chateau, Napoleon definitively made his mark.
In 1804, the former royal estate became an imperial
residence: Napoleon Bonaparte made Rambouillet his
hunting headquarters.
He made improvements to the chateau which became one
of his favourite residences. Today, visitors can discover his
apartments, the neo-Pompeiian interior decoration, the
bathroom and objects that describe in detail the Emperor’s
everyday.
Surrounded by gardens and parks that have received the
“Jardin Remarquable” label, with its canals and six islands
the Rambouillet estate has everything a visitor needs for a
pleasant stroll. The visit continues with the Dairy of Queen
Marie-Antoinette and the Thatched Cottage with Shells,
decorated with mother-of-pearl and seashells.

Napoleon: a man of war
Paris is full of sights and monuments marked by Napoleon. At the Hôtel national des Invalides, Napoleon the soldier is
celebrated. It is a great starting point for visiting other sites that illustrate the campaigns of this great military leader.
Army Museum
Part of the prestigious Hôtel National
des Invalides, the Army Museum
boasts priceless collections, from the
Middle Ages to the modern day.
The collections concerning Napoleon
Bonaparte, his armies and his
marshals are particularly remarkable.
The museum retraces the Imperial
campaigns and presents the
weaponry and military corps that
made their mark.
Among the treasures presented by
the museum, the famous painting by
Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres:
Napoléon 1er sur le trône (Napoleon I
on his Imperial Throne). Also present
are the chain of the Grand Master of
the Order of the Legion of Honour
and a case of four pistols that
belonged to Napoleon.
Tomb of Napoleon I
The Dome Church houses Napoleon’s
monumental tomb, the tomb of his
son and the tombs of famous military
leaders (Turenne, Vauban, Foch, etc.).
Made entirely of red quartz on a base
of green granite from Les Vosges, the
tomb is surrounded by a laurel crown
and 12 “Victories” sculpted by Pradier,
symbolising Napoleon’s military
campaigns. At the back of the crypt
there is a statue of the Emperor
wearing the Imperial symbol.

Gare de l’Est
Le départ des poilus, août 1914
In 1914, Gare de l’Est station saw many soldiers leave for
the front lines. On display since 1926 in the station’s main
hall, the fresco entitled Le départ des poilus, août 1914
(The infantry depart, August 1914), bears witness to the
station’s importance in the war.
This monumental painting (60m²) tells the tale of their
departure for the trenches. The fresco is a tribute by
American painter Albert Herter to his son, a volunteer in
the French army who was killed in the last few months
of the war, in 1918.

Musée de la Grande Guerre du Pays
de Meaux
(Museum of the Great war, Pays de Meaux)
An essential destination to understand the First World
War and its effects on society, this museum presents a
collection unique in Europe. Located on the actual front
lines of the Marne, it is an ideal departure point for visiting
the battlefields to the north and east of France.
With a unique collection in Europe, the Museum of the
Great War in Pays de Meaux offers a new vision of the
world’s first war. Under the large nave, the reconstruction
of a battlefield brings together tanks and planes.
Its permanent exhibition covers 3,000m2 and includes all
aspects of the conflict through appealing and innovative
layout and design: projections, soundtracks and interactive
terminals. In particular, it shows how between 1914 and
1918 the world moved from the 19th to the 20th century.
A tour lasting just over an hour offers an immersive
experience. It begins in the 1870s, when the first tensions
led to the start of the First World War and finishes in 1939
at the dawn of the Second World War.

Many trendy areas appeal to gay
customers, beginning with Rue
Sainte-Anne which was the first
gay and lesbian area in Paris, or the
Bonne Nouvelle area which is a recent
gay district. The Marais is still today
the heart of Parisian gay life.
The shops on Rue du Temple
showcase vintage clothes or avantgarde fashion and design.
Near Rue des Archives, when it’s time
for an aperitif, winter or summer, the
terraces of the cafés and bars are
bursting: Open, FreeDJ, Cox, Mine,
Spyce... each with its own brand of
clientèle.
Who’s Restaurant will serve until
1am, unless its guests prefer to
grace one of the terraces with their
presence - to see and be seen.
Parties end when dawn breaks at
Gibus every Saturday night.
