History of the GT40
CAV GT Component Program
Henry Ford II was the author of the GT40
story. In 1963 Henry II had wanted to revive
the Ford image and had hoped to acquire
Ferrari to realize his ambition of creating a
winner at Le Mans under the Ford badge.
Enzo Ferrari refused. With the weight of
the Ford Empire behind him and the grit to
turn dream into reality, he set out to create
a winning racing car to beat the best.
Ferrari was the benchmark, the Le Mans 24
hour endurance race the battleground.
The CAV GT in component form comprises
the same purpose made quality
components as used in the complete car.
These can be purchased in stages or as a
total assembly package.
No time was wasted. Ford Advance
Vehicles was created and under Eric
Broadley's direction, the GT40 project was
born. By August 1963, Broadley had
designed the low, sleek coupe, earmarked
to be number one on road and track. The
mid-mounted Ford V8 engine and
monocoque chassis became the signature
specifications of the tough, muscular super
car the world would come to adore.
In June 1966 the GT40 took 1st, 2nd and
3rd place at Le Mans. A year later, the
GT40 Mark IV took the title off Ferrari by
four laps and the year after that the Mark I
claimed another victory in the famous Gulf
Oil livery. The 1969 Le Mans endurance
race provided the closest finish in Le Mans
history for Jackie Ickx and Jackie Oliver in
their GT40 over Porsche, with a win by a
2-second margin after 24 hours. The
dramatic finish echoed the spectacle of its
first victory and was a fitting finale to end a
decade of thrilling performance.
As with all legends, the GT40 continues to
evoke nostalgia for the groundbreaking
innovation of its time. Its pioneering design
and engineering continues to inspire
successive generations, who re-live every
moment of its history.
What differentiates the CAV GT
Component program is that the essential
building block, the chassis and body, come
pre-assembled and shaped. All body
panels have been correctly aligned,
gapped and the doors hung. In keeping
with this standard, it is primed and ready to
spray and can be customized to individual
color and striping specifications.
The parts used in the component program
are the same individually manufactured
components used in the factory. Precision
assembly is carried out by qualified
personnel for quality and peace of mind.
Our service is supported by a comprehensive build manual , available on CD
ROM, together with telephonic and e-mail
back-up through our factory and
distributors.
There are nine stages in the component
program. Every single part is available, and
is specified in an option list. These include
carpeting, complete engine and drive train
options, silencers, gauges and switches - to
name a few.
