2013-2014 Annual Report executive DiRectoR’s messAge Film Training Manitoba has many good things to highlight over the last year. FTM’s workshops were filled to capacity, a record number of Manitoba instructors led our workshops and FTM developed several new partnerships. As you would expect, our annual report shows you who, what, when and where; how many people participated in training, what programs and courses we delivered, and when they took place. This year I’d also like to talk about why we do what we do. It’s actually simple. Film Training Manitoba’s board members and staff are truly invested in developing the industry in Manitoba. We want our industry to thrive so we work hard to develop local people. We take pride in finding amazing instructors and bringing the latest technology to Manitoba. Why? We believe in Manitoba companies, Manitoba crewmembers, our participants and partners, and our programs. We believe that training and lifelong learning is the key to a thriving industry where individuals can achieve their potential. FTM is always looking for ways to continuously improve as we look to the future. As the industry grows and changes, there will always be work for us to do and we gladly embrace that challenge. Thank you to our funders and the community for supporting us. FTM’s success is your success. As this report will show, FTM continued to provide high quality and consistent training during the 2013 fiscal year. FTM staff focused heavily on outreach activities to assist Manitoba labour organizations and production companies in finding needed workers. The staff met with promising candidates, providing them with career information and helping them develop their resumes. This in turn provided local production companies with 40 promising new people. Film Training Manitoba participated in several industry consultations to help shape the new federal/ provincial agreement now called the Canada-Manitoba Job Grant. The new agreement, effective July 1, 2014, is available to companies over the next four to six years. FTM will play a key role in assisting companies with accessing the funds from the program. Other highlights of the year include the Film Training Manitoba Expo titled Managing Your Career. The Expo was comprised of five events which took place in October. It was well attended with an overall total of 66 participants. Film Training Manitoba’s Crew Training Program delivered 49 in-class workshops with 864 people trained. Film Training Manitoba also partnered with On Screen Manitoba for two very successful sessions at the annual All Access media conference. FTM worked with Red River College (RRC) to determine the gaps between the standard accounting program at RRC and the skills needed to work as an accountant in the film, television and digital media sector. Without the continued support of Manitoba’s film and television industry stakeholders, Film Training Manitoba’s job would be much more difficult. The Board of Directors would like to thank the various organizations who have worked directly with FTM over the past year: the City of Winnipeg, the Province of Manitoba, and the federal government of Canada. Thank you to our other partnering organizations including IATSE Local 856, IATSE Local 669, the Directors Guild of Canada (Manitoba District), ACTRA Manitoba, Manitoba Film & Music, On Screen Manitoba and Red River College. I would also like to offer special thanks to departing board members Andrew McLaren and Vonnie Von Helmolt for their many years of commitment to Film Training Manitoba. I’d like to welcome new board member Brandice Vivier, and thank Vice-Chair Rob Rowan, Executive Director Neila Benson and her hardworking staff and the dedicated Board and committee members of FTM for their support in this, my first full year as Chair of the Board. I look forward to working together with the staff and board in continuing the success of Film Training Manitoba. On the same note, production companies want to be sure that professional development training will help them gain and maintain a competitive edge. Film Training Manitoba works hard to ensure that individuals and production companies can access high quality training. We work with industry, training, and education partners to make sure the training we provide gives participants the knowledge they need for the ongoing advancement of their careers. This past year FTM trained 864 people and delivered 49 in-class workshops. “ the Fundamentals of Directing course was excellent! i really enjoyed it. like many of the best professors i have had the joy of learning from, John paizs was able to take directing and make it seem so simple and selfevident. i definitely feel like i’ve been given a great set of tools that i will bring with me to my next production. As long as Ftm continues to bring in people as skilled, experienced, and knowledgeable as John paizs, then i look forward being a part of many more courses you offer in the future.” mAtheu plouFFe, woRkshop pARticipAnt 2013 mAnitobA Film tRAining expo The Manitoba Film Training Expo is a collaboration with industry partners to provide innovative and responsive training in new technologies. The theme of this year’s Expo was Managing Your Career. Workshops were offered that helped participants explore different ways of furthering and strengthening their career paths in a variety of disciplines within the industry – including directing, producing, and acting. The 2013 Expo attracted 66 participants from the filmmaking community. online tRAining FTM currently offers seven online courses - Set Orientation, WHMIS, Safety Awareness, Propane Safety, Intro to Paper, Locations, and The Business of Acting. These courses are recommended to new workers and some are required for membership to local labour organizations - IATSE Local 856, IATSE Local 669, the DGC Manitoba District Council, and ACTRA Manitoba. Because they are available online, crewmembers are able to complete their training without delay. In 2013-14, 113 participants took part in at least one of the online courses offered through FTM. In total, participants registered for 279 online courses over the past year. FTM translated the six required online courses into French, making them accessible in both official languages. cRew tRAining list ApRil 2013 novembeR 2013 •TrafficAwarenessforthe FilmIndustry •Actors’GymwithShelaghCarter •AdvancedSceneStudywith BenRatner •Actors’GymwithAaronMerke •IntroductiontotheProduction Office •IntroductiontotheCostume Department •WAFFScreenwriting101 •CanadianBorderServices mAy 2013 •AuditionHellwithPeterSkagen •Tips,TechniquesandEtiquette forFilmSetandPropBuying •NSI:NewVoicesWHMIS •NSI:NewVoicesSetOrientation •Actors’GymwithCarmenKotyk •TaxCreditsandBudgeting DecembeR 2013 •Prep&Shoot-Introduction toAssistantDirecting •TheEssentialQuestionsof ScriptDevelopment •IntroductiontoVoiceWork •ScriptDevelopment •Introductionto3rdAssistant Directing •Actors’GymwithTamaraGorski •IntroductiontoSteadicam CameraStabilizingSystem •IntroductiontoDocumentary Producing July/August 2013 JAnuARy 2014 •Actors’GymwithCarmenKotyk •IntroductiontoLightingand Grip •IntroductiontotheProduction Office •AllAccess:SeizingOpportunity -Today’sFinancingPartners •NUMediaSetOrientation •Actors’GymwithGaryYates •MusicRightsandClearances septembeR 2013 FebRuARy 2014 •SmartStart:HowtoStartYour BusinessinFilm,Television andNewMedia •IntroductiontoProduction Assisting •IntroductiontoCo-Productions andBusinessAffairs •Actors’GymwithGaryYates •IntroductiontotheHair DepartmentfortheFilm Industry •ElectronicCastingfor ProfessionalActors •BusinessAffairsforFilm andTelevision •IntroductiontoDollyGrip •TVWritingfromConcept toProduction •Actors’GymwithDarrenWall June 2013 octobeR 2013 •TheFundamentalsofDirecting withJohnPaizs •Actors’GymwithNicholasRice •WorkingasaProfessionalActor •GreenlightYourCareer •AllAccess(Frenchsession) •ProductiveProductionsand HRStrategies mARch 2014 •IntroductiontoFinalDraft andMovieMagicScreenwriter •SuccessfulAuditionStrategies •IntroductiontoDocumentary Producing •GimmeSomeTruth:Taking Shape-NewFormsfor NorthernStories FTM partnered with Red River College to deliver the Film Crew Training: Introduction course as part of the Digital A/V Production certificate program through the Department of Continuing Education.
