Welcome to the summer show issue newsletter, which
includes a full write up of our May Festival Show – a
wonderful showcase for all World Breeds as well as our
European Saddlebred Championship Show. Everyone
stepped up to the mark raised £655 in sponsorship –
WOW aren’t you guys great! A big thank you to
everyone that donated prizes, money and their time – it
really is much appreciated. Looking forward to the 2016
event, sponsorship is needed, as are offers of help on
the day, even if it is only for an hour or so. I’m pleased
to report that at the time of going to print we already
have £970 pledged in sponsorship for next year – but
lets’ not rest on our laurels, as the event costs in excess
of £3,000 to run, so every bit of sponsorship is
appreciated.
Inside is also a full report of our Annual General
Meeting, which was held the late afternoon before the
May Festival Show, together with our Awards ceremony
for our 2014 Hi-Point Roll of Honorees. Well done to
everyone that took part and congratulations to the two
Saddlebreds who gained their Gold Level &
Championship status – CH Appledore Fandango and
CH Spellbound Tobias.
As always we have an article for you, this time finishing
the article on colour. Coming up in the Year book is
one on saddle seat equitation, which finishes our series
of articles, so if there are any topics you would like to
see covered in the future, please let us know.
Happy reading, don’t forget to send in your news and
photos and let us know what you have been up to over
the coming months. Our next publication is the Year
Book, always a favourite for our “Members News”
section. Don’t forget to keep sending in your news and
photos of what YOU have been up to with your
Saddlebred – the world loves this section of our
newsletters and it is all down to YOU.

We continue to have our regular spot in Western Horse UK magazine – a
great way to get our breed known. They run a free advertising section, a
photo and a few lines of text, so if any member has a horse or tack to sell
(it doesn’t have to be western related but obviously the bulk of the readers
will be western orientated) this is a great place to advertise them for free.
Partbred (50%) Knight Skye’s Dark Diva featured in the
film, Insurgent.
We are involved in a display at Equifest this year. Asked to coordinate the “Foreign breeds”
displays over three days, it was a joint decision to separate the breeds dependent mainly on
what days people and their horses could attend (we couldn’t accommodate everyone, but we did
go with the majority). Friday is to be the day of the “Baroque Horses” – the Lusitanos, PREs
and Friesians and will also feature some pole and flag work. Saturday is OUR day, and is for the
North American Breeds – this will feature Saddlebreds, Morgans, Paints and American Curlies.
Sunday is for the South American, Gaited, Scandinavian and draft type breeds and will feature
Paso Finos, French Draft Horses, Icelandics and Haflingers. Time-wise we have a great slot –
12.30 each day – hopefully we’ll draw lots of interest in this lunch time period. If you are in the
area, do come along and watch the various displays – hopefully there is something different
each day for you, so come back on consecutive days! On the Sunday we also have our
showing ring – in hand starts at 10am. To accommodate the display, the ridden classes will not
start until 1pm.
ASHA BREED AMBASSADOR PROGRAM
The ASHA is excited to announce that the new “Breed Ambassador Program” was unanimously
approved by the Executive Board on May 11, and information and materials are now available
for download. Any Saddlebred promotional activity done during the calendar year WILL be
counted, retroactive to January 1, 2015. The ASHA Breed Ambassador Program seeks to
recognize and reward the many things members are already doing to introduce our beautiful
horses to the non-Saddlebred public by giving points for activities like taking a Saddlebred to an
open breed show, riding in parades, conducting a seminar, riding in organized all-breed trail
rides, giving public riding lessons, holding camps, putting on shows, garnering media attention,
and much more. We recognize that different methods work in different areas, and that not all
regions have the same type of equine activities or even Saddlebred populations, but members
are not limited by discipline or access to ASB-specific clubs or events. Additionally, there will be
Breed Ambassadors in three different categories: Individual, Barn Group, or Charter Club. The
ASHA Charter Clubs, both nationally and abroad, have agreed to collect the data in December
of each year, and Regional Champions and Reserve Champions in each of the categories will
be named for each ASHA Region (so for both UK and Europe that is USA-UK). The highest
point earners from among the Regional Champion Breed Ambassadors will be named World
Champion and Reserve World Champion Breed Ambassadors at the 2016 ASHA Convention.
Participants need not register in advance or be a charter club member, but must be members of
the ASHA. For program details and materials, go to www.asha.net

COLOUR IN THE SADDLEBRED Part 3
White
White does not act like a modifying gene, rather it overwrites the pigment in the
coat making it white. This can be expressed on a horse in many ways – as
distinct makings (Tobiano or Overo patterns), or as flecks in the coat. Apart from greys and roans, the skin
colour under the white is usually unpigmented (pink). When white is mixed into the coat it falls into two
categories, grey or roan.
Piebald & Skewbald
These two terms are used in the UK referring to the colour of a coloured horse or pony. Piebald is Black &
white, Skewbald is any other colour and white. Now days we call a coloured horse by the PATTERN of his
broken coat. For many years only two types of patterns were recognised – Tobiano and Overo. Either the
horse possessed the dominant gene for this colour and so expressed it, or he didn’t. There was no need to
do any genetic tests – if he was coloured then he had at least one of these genes. With advances in gene
mapping, Overo has now been split into Frame White, Splash, Sabino and Dominant White and all of these
can all be genetically tested for.
Tobiano (TO)
This is a dominant gene seen as white
over the spine that extends downwards
between the ears and the tail. The head is
dark, with any white face markings like
those of a solid-coloured horse. Usually
all 4 legs are white below the knee and
hock. The tail can be two colours, a trait
seldom seen in horses that are not
tobiano.
N/TO – Body coat tobiano pattern
TO/TO – Body coat tobiano
pattern and all offspring will be tobiano.
Table 5: The coat patterns of the pinto, ref: Linda Kristoffersson, http://shewollf.deviantart.com
The first recorded “coloured” Saddlebred stallion was foaled in 1882 and registered in 1891 (when the
American Saddlebred Horse Registry was formed – at the time it was known as the Kentucky Horse
Breeders Association). This stallion was called “Arabian Bill” and was registered as white with bay spots.
He was owned by Jacob Thomas & Son of Knox City Missouri. The first Saddlebred mare was foaled in 1884
(and again registered in 1891) – “Moonlight”. She was registered as white with spots, again owned by
Jacob Thomas & Son. Another mare “Zenith” was also registered in 1891 and was recorded as “spotted” –
no other colour was given. She was foaled in 1885 and was owned by J.D. & L.B. Smith of New Berlin,
7

Illinois. After WWII the Elliott Farm and stable in Sedalia, Missouri became famous for its pinto breeding
programme – however no-one is quite sure where the term “pinto” originated from. The only one of these
three spotted Saddlebreds that had registered offspring was Zenith, who had a bay colt called Gold Ring.
Despite this early recording of “spotted” Saddlebreds, many were simply recorded by their base coat – e.g.
chestnut. High whites or splashed white (white above the knee and/or hock usually accompanied by belly
splashes of white and lots of white on the face) were not even mentioned. A Saddlebred with these
markings would have just been recorded as a chestnut (or bay …) – offspring of these horses though could
produce colour.
Miss
America
(photo
ref:
http://www.asha.net/members/registry.php?reg=019182M&like=&searcht
ext=MISS+AMERICA+%28BHF%29&g=4) was an American Saddlebred
born in 1929 and simply recorded as “bay”. However, she was
indeed coloured, as photo’s of her prove – she had a large and
quite distinctive white patch on her mid right flank – bearing
more than a passing resemblance to the relief of South
America in fact!
Oak Hill Chief was born in 1935 and recorded as a chestnut,
yet he had extensive overo type markings on his neck and his
left side. At some stage it became “acceptable” to have a
coloured horse and then true coat patterns and colourations
were recorded.
Many pinto American Saddlebreds
and National Show Horses have
been imported into this country, all
of whom show the Tobiano coat
colour. Some of our UK stallions
have
been
lab tested as
homozygous, such as the purebred
Moonlight Hy-Colortyme (see photo

NSH SV The X Factor (photo right ref:

For details of others, visit our website at www.american-saddlebred.co.uk and go to the
“Stallions page”.
Splashed White (SW)
This is a variable white pattern that usually has a large blaze, extended white
markings in the legs, white spots on the belly and often blue eyes – some of these
horses may also be deaf (typically in Australian bloodlines). It is probable that the
overo coat pattern (white from feet upwards, rather than crossing the top line as in
Tobianos) is caused by this gene. I’ve yet to find a suitable picture of a Saddlebred
with these markings, as those that do show it also show major characteristics of
the Sabino markings and so are more likely to be Sabinos. There are three known
genes for plashed white, SW1, SW2 and SW3. SW1 is found in many breeds, SW2
and SW3 only in certain lines of Quarter Horses and Paints and their associated
homozygous form (double genes of SW) may be lethal (lethal white syndrome).

Grey/Roan
Grey is dominant (G) and so only one gene is needed for a horse to
be grey. The base coat can be any colour, but they will show
progressively more white hairs each year until the coat is almost
virtually white. Roan is a general term and the number of white hairs
does not usually increase with age although it may alter with
seasons (think of strawberry roans that, apart from their heads, are
almost white in the winter, but not in the summer). Photo ref:
www.winsdown.com
Rabicano Roan
This is typically expressed with a patch of white hair on the flanks, which
may spread onto the barrel in a stripy or brindled fashion. If white hairs are
found at the base of the tail they can be
in horizontal bands (known as a coon or
skunk tail). Note the lack of white on the
legs in the photo on the left and the
skunk tail on the photo on the right.

Sabino (SB)
This is seen as irregular spotting on the legs, belly and face, often with extensive roaning. There are at
least two sabino genes found in Saddlebreds SB1 and SB2. SB1 can be genetically tested at this current
time, SB2 cannot. SB1 is dominant and a horse carrying a double copy of SB1 will be at least 90% white.
N/SB1 – typically has 2 or more white legs (with the white often running up the back of the legs),
blaze, spotting or roaning in mid section and jagged margins around the white areas.
SB1/SB1 – completely or nearly all white expected.

Right,

marked
sabino:
www.cantewindsfarm.com/ChampagneFizzStanding.jpg Note the white legs in ALL of the horses.
This is one of my favourite colour schemes and the genetics interest me immensely, hence the slightly
extended coverage of this colour. With this gene, once it’s in a bloodline it seems to be “How much of it
will be expressed?” not “has it been passed or not?” Sabino markings seem relatively common in the
Saddlebred and it is not unusual for a Splash White, Sabino or even a coloured offspring to be produced
from the occasional mating of two solid coloured parents (in any breed). Sabino markings can range from
9
Saddlebreds.UK uniting the American Saddlebred Horse. Summer 2015
www.american-saddlebred.co.uk
maximum (almost white) to as little white as a chin or lower lip white s pot. The genetics in play with
Sabinos are also thought to play a part in “chrome” horses – solid-coloured horses with bold white
markings on the face and high leg markings. No form of Sabino genetics is linked to the lethal white
syndrome, so although the colouration between Sabino and Splash White can be easily confused, they are
definitely due to different genes. In the UK the Sabino pattern has been introduced through Champagne Fizz
bloodlines (see previous photo far right of CF), with the horse in question (Celtic Champagne) being
heterozygous for Sabino.
The Sabino is often mistaken for other colourations and not always correctly attributed as a horse’s colour.
Minimally expressed it has white markings on the head and legs on what looks like an otherwise solidcoloured horse. The white markings tend to have narrow, pointed extensions up the leg or down the throat.
As the Sabino pattern progresses, the white on the legs get higher and can extend to the chest in front and
the stifle in the rear. Belly spots appear, which can often be seen when viewed from the side. On the head
the white becomes more extensive, spreading over the eyes and from the lower lip to the throat latch.
Further expression of the gene shows flecking over the entire body, with the head and belly often
completely white, with the horse often being mistaken for a roan. Sabinos with large, sharp-edged spots on
their sides can often be confused with frame Overos. If the pattern extends over the back, then some can
be confused with Tobianos. In its maximum expression the Sabino is
predominantly white. Nearly all Sabinos will have white legs, often
with white on their belly, which is useful when trying to distinguish
them from the Overo or Tobiano. There is strong evidence that the
Sabino gene is polygenic – that it comes about as the result of the
action of several different genes – minimally marked Sabinos have
fewer of these genes than the maximum, white Sabino. When
breeding, it follows then that the whiter the Sabino is the more likely
you are to produce colour, however this gene seems quite capable of
apparently skipping generations – just keep an eye out for those
white legs!

For those wishing to test their horse’s genotype, the Animal Genetics UK (www.horsedna.co.uk) offer a
service for testing for the following coat colours: Extension gene (red/black), Agouti, Cream, Pearl, Silver,
Champagne, Grey, Frame Overo, Sabino and Tobiano, from your horses’ tail hair.
The Saddlebred registry is one of the few registries that have no colour restrictions – when you look at their
original 17 Foundation Sires (The Ambling Influence, part 4) you will see every colour represented –
chestnut, bay, brown, roan and grey – which means that all of these colours and dilutions discussed in this
article ARE possible to be found in the Saddlebred. Even with the advent of DNA technology to verify
parentage, many other breeds held steadfast to colour restrictions – the high white rule was only recently
overturned for Morgans (no white allowed above the knee or hock or on the body), black only for Friesians
and so on. As always the Saddlebred leads the way – with other horses left to follow in their wake.
Whatever colour your Saddlebred is he IS the right colour – have fun and enjoy him!

The Partbreds In Hand
Judges: Mr Russell Marks & Mrs Mary Guy
This show is now the biggest Foreign Breed / World Breed
show in the UK and offers a great show case for
everyone, not just Saddlebreds. In addition it hosts our
European Saddlebred Championships, with great prizes
on offer for the Purebred In Hand, Partbred In Hand and
Ridden Saddlebred Champions. We have re-introduced
the British Bred class (for purebreds) to encourage
breeding of purebreds and have a cash payout of £310 on
offer in this class (horses must be USA-UK registered and
owned by a USA-UK member to be eligible for payout),
gaurenteed for 5 years – that is until 2018. Top prize is
£100 for the winner – not much compared with some of
the Futurities in America we know, which can reach
thousands, but every little helps as they say and we hope
it will encourage more purebreds to be bred and
subsequently forward into the show ring.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our
sponsors and donations for the 2015 event: Lucy Abbott,
Appledore Stud, Kim Bonny, British Morgan Horse
Society, Lottie Crocker Tack Shop, Elegant Equine
Designs, Excell Training, KC Saddlebreds, Lynn Herd,
Hirons Stud, Rosemary Jinks, Love Horses, Monnington
Morgans, P&S Enterprises, Pat Pomp, Redheart
Appaloosas, Diane Whiting and Sally Willink. In all, over
£650 cash was raised – a lot of it was immediately spent
on garlands, sashes and saddle pads, but even so I am
seriously impressed with the support from everyone. In
addition I would like to thank everyone that helps at the
show, in whatever capacity, before, during and after and
to our judges and of course all our competitors who come
along and make it such a great event.

Saddlebreds.UK uniting the American Saddlebred Horse. Summer 2015
The show seemed much bigger than normal, even though
the number of horses was down from previous years –
however, some of the classes had 12-15 entries in, which
for a specialist show is amazing. As ever, the walk/trot,
limit and amateur classes were the most popular ones.
The In Hand classes saw fewer entries forward (than the
ridden classes), but we had a fair representative of
Saddlebreds forward – three in the partbred ranks and five
in the purebred. Kim Bonny’s CH Appledore Fandango
took the partbred championship and Lynn Jarvis’ Kumala
Champagne the purebred championship.
Although breaks were scheduled throughout the day, to
enable people time to get changed, warm-up etc., having
the two judges certainly seemed to make the show run
smoother – while one judge and steward was having a
break the other judge and steward would step in and
officiate over the next block of classes – there certainly did
not seem to be much hanging around. We had wonderful
gate stewards – Manda King in the morning for the in hand
classes and Daniel Abbott for the ridden classes – the pair
certainly did their job in keeping the show running
smoothly, and neither are members, so a big thank you to
them both. It was great to see so many smiling faces
throughout the day – hopefully we managed to get it right
with the show format!
At the end of the day we had all our various performance
championships – taking the European Saddlebred
Championship was Kumala Champagne and Reserve was
Spellbound Magical Fate and taking the overall Supreme
Ridden Championship, was last years champion, Angela
Conner-Bulmer’s
Morgan
mare,
Versache.
Congratulations to everyone at the show – Saddlebred
results & championship results and show breakdown follow
(full results can be found both on our Facebook group –
Saddlebreds UK and on our website). On the Facebook
group is also a draft schedule for the 2016 show –
comments welcomed for running order / class inclusions
etc. We finalise it in November for the full version to be
posted in December. Please feel free to share it with nonSaddlebreds, as we cater for other breeds as well their
input is always appreciated.

The show through a competitors eyes (Lynn Herd):
“The May Festival Show was or the final time held at Moreton
Morrell. It was so good to see some new and old faces
returning. One new face was Pat Pomp – an awful lot of people
can now put a face to a name!
Our judges for the day were Russell Marks and Mary Guy, who
did an excellent job, helped by their stewards, Simon and Anna.
They had some big classes and an array of breeds to preside
over.
Perryfields Matter Of Fact
The inside arena started with the in hand classes. Some
beautifully presented horses were brought forward for judging.
Some classes were really well supported, but it was a shame
only one came forward for the NSH class. This was won by
Sally Willink and Perryfields A Chance Of Fame who was in
high spirits, but was turned out to perfection by Sally. He is
certainly one to watch for the future. Let’s get the word around
our NSH owner friends! The mature partbred class was won by
Kim Bonny and the ever reliable CH Appledore Fandango –
looking well as always. Kim and Fandango also went on to win
the Partbred Championship.
Spellbound Magical Fate
Kumala Champagne
A trio of Saddlebreds
The purebred junior class had two new horses forward – O
What A Hi (with Paula Thomas), a striking grey gelding by
Winsdown Hi Octane (America’s #1 Futurity Sire 1998 – 2002
and 2004 – 2007) and the chestnut mare, Monnington Queen
Latifa (by CH Cloverleaf Master And Commander). Winning the
Junior class was Dorothy Hasty with her Fame’s Encore mare,
State Of Flux. Sadly Queen Latifa had come out in hives after
being allergic to something in her stable, but she’ll be back
without the lumps next time. What a promising group of young
horses – they all have bags of potential and it will be interesting
watching them mature in the years to come. The senior class
was won by Rachel Palmer and her mare Even Better Than
Worse. British bred was taken by Kumala Champagne, who
was presented beautifully, ahead of State of Flux and
Monnington Queen Latifa. This was the order for the Purebred
Championships, except with Even Better Than Worse taking the
third spot.
The restricted ridden classes were really well supported with 10
contesting the first year of showing class. Saddlebreds took 4 th
7 6th place with MQ Latifa taking a credible 4th in her first ever
ridden class, with Lynn Herd aboard and Shannon Turner
riding Perryfields Matter Of Fact beautifully to take 6 th. The
other restricted classes had up to 15 competitors, making them
a joy to watch.
15
Saddlebreds.UK uniting the American Saddlebred Horse. Summer 2015
John Bulmer won the Open Harness class with his
impressive imported gelding, Ridgewood’s Phire Cracker.
This was the horse John competed at Horse Of The Year
Show with, so it was a real treat to see John and Cracker
perform.
The 3-Gaited class, which always seems to be the class
every saddle seat competitor would like to win, was this
year won by Lucy Abbott and Spellbound Magical Fate,
who behaved impeccably – just as a 3-G horse should.
Saddlebred Hunter was awarded to Shannon Turner and
Perryfields Matter Of Fact. The ridden (ASB)
championship went to the deserving Lynn Jarvis and
Kumala Champagne, Reserve to Lucy Abbott and
Spellbound Magical Fate and 2nd Reserve to Shannon
Turner and Perryfields Matter Of Fact.
Our Saddlebreds held their own in the Open Foreign
Breed classes: Paula Thomas & O What A Hi getting a 3rd
in the Gelding class, Rachel Palmer and Even Better Than
Worse a 4th in the Mares class & a 3rd in the Coloureds
class, Sally & Perryfields A Chance Of Fame 2nd in both
the Youngtsock and the Coloured classes. The Concours
class is always worth watching – with some stunning
outfits this year – Lucy & Magic came second in this
strong class.

The day ran to time thanks to our helpers, including
Daniel Abbott who did a sterling job on the gate, Anna
Tehrani-Hamilton was indoor ring steward and Ann
Blackaby was announcer for the day. The show could
never run without our volunteers, who we appreciate
immensely.
We have now outgrown Moreton Morrell, so after many
happy years and some wonderful memories we are
moving. If every member could get just one extra
competitor to attend next years show we could make it the
biggest and best ever – come on, let’s do it! See you all at
Onley in 2016.”

So very proud of Roly, he was such a good boy, his first ridden class
which was also a huge class, although no rosette he was a winner for
me – Dorothy Hasty.
Picked up this grand array of hardware (and
software) from the United Saddlebred
Association (USA-UK) show the other week at
Moreton Morrell. The show was fantastic thank you Lynn Jarvis! Based on the
association Hi-Point award scheme Tobias
and Paul Hayler won the Part Bred ridden
championship, members cup championship,
Sports Horse championship and gold level
award which in the Saddlebred world means
that Tobias is now CH Spellbound Tobias!
Thank you Paul and all at Team Hayler for
making it such a fantastic year. (Pat Pomp).
“Dear Lynn, First, thank you again for a really enjoyable and well-run
show today. Some very kind and patient ladies helped me for the best
part of 4 hours (!) to load my 3 year old, who suddenly took an
aversion to loading having never done so before. I would like to send
them a thank you, but know only that they were two sisters (one called
Fiona) and one (grown up) daughter showing appaloosas, who came
from Hertfordshire. Are you by any chance able to identify them and
tell me where I could send something to them? Thank you very much
and look forward to seeing you next year, Yours, Madeleine Campbell”
Paso – Capriole
“Thank you for a lovely afternoon Lynn Jarvis and team. Been many
years since we visited the show. What a lovely atmosphere. Lovely
horses. Well done to you!!! X” Lorraine Rowntree.
“Lynn thank you for allowing me to be part of your amazing show. I
had a brilliant day and I am looking forward to next year x” (from Anna,
our ring steward).
I must add that as being on several judging panels I’m blessed to
judge
at
many
different
shows.
However......ALL
you
Morgan/Saddlebred /foreign breeds gang are always a joy to be part
of....extremely friendly, helpful, genuine and approachable....... (from
our show judge, Russell Marks).
Having fun at the show!
“What a lovely show it was despite a bit of ring instruction being
missing just at the start which made for an exciting ride on my part. I
particularly wanted to thank you for the beautifully made ribbons and
garlands, they are really lovely things to keep”. Angela Conner.
Thank you for another amazingly well run show! Fantastic judges and
stewards couldn't have been better IMO x – Teri Osborne.

2015 Show Breakdown.
Advance entries were up slightly from last year, 59 (53 in 2014), but this is down on previous years
(68 in 2013 and 62 in 2012) & included Appaloosas, Caspians, Friesians, Lusitanos, Morgans,
Paints, Pasos, PREs and of course Saddlebreds. 11 Saddlebreds were entered, up from last year
but down on previous years (11 in 2013 & 17 in 2012). The range of breeds we saw has increased,
19
Saddlebreds.UK uniting the American Saddlebred Horse. Summer 2015
www.american-saddlebred.co.uk
which is good news – now we just need to turn that into actual entries. A lot of people took advantage
of paying by paypal at the last minute – not a problem, but try not to leave it too late as it adds to the
paperwork leading up to the event. Next year we are moving to Onley Grounds Equestrian Complex in
Rugby – a much larger site, with room to expand, and more importantly to us no restrictions on the
number of stables available, as they will get in as many temporary stables as we need. On the bonus
side there is a bar, café, resturant and tack shop on site, plus hook-up facilities for those needing it. At
the end of this section, for those of you interested in that sort of thing, is a complete breakdown of
entries per class over the past 7 years – we do analyse entries and combine this with people’s
suggestions for new / amended classes each year.
A big thank you to Sally Willink for organising the Goodie Bags for each and
every champion and reserve and to everyone else that sponsored a class or
championship. Sponsorship starts the day after the show – you will see from
our accounts what the show costs and if this cannot be met from entries then it
has to be paid from somewhere else – either Association funds or cash
sponsorship.
We changed our rosette supplier this year and I was very impressed with the
rosettes – from the basic class ones, through to the scrumptious velvet
supreme championship ones (see photo right) and they all depicted our new
logo, which I hope you all enjoy.
Do to storage issues, we will only be offering the
flower garlands in the two supreme championships
and the ASB ridden championships next year. The
lady that now makes our rosettes will be supplying
a new style replacement (see photo left – this style,
but slightly different colours: unless people are
happy with the black background? Was thinking of
the SA style – see photo right, with a few
ammendments: Blue with yellow trim, pom-poms
and gold writing for champion, Red with yellow trim,
pom-poms and gold writing for reserve and the
black/yellow one how it is for the second reserve?
Please let me know your thoughts on this – especially if you are NOT
happy as I raise the orders for the rosettes, sashes and garlands in November to ensure we get them
at this years prices. The proposed new sashes will be cheaper than the garlands, but more
importantly take less storage space. Rest assured the quality and style will be of the utmost
importance – basically if I am not happy to win and display the sash/rosette myself then I will not buy it.
I am still waiting for some invoices to come in for the show (venue hire and stable fees), so rather than
hold the newsletter up even longer, the full cost breakdown of the show will be in the Year Book.
Monies received to date consist of: advance entries of £2,365, sponsorship of £654.21 (paypal loves
to charge!), entries on the day raised £160 and stabling brought in £1,290. Outgoings included
£1,145 for the rosettes, sashes and garlands, £118.05 for prizes (embroidered saddle cloths etc.),
£80 for printing, £41.40 for postage, £200 for insurance, miscellaneous items were £400.64
(competitor numbers, advertising, flyers etc), Judges & Stewards were £240 and the British Bred
class payout was £240. As said, we still have to pay out for the venue hire and the stable fees
(approx. £1800 to pay out), but we are sitting with approx. £2,000 credit so we should come out just in
credit, without having to touch funds from previous years – which I think is good for such a specialist
show, especially as we are also including in this the payout for the British Bred class (that technically
would be profit for the show). Which leads nicely onto the next statement …..
20
Saddlebreds.UK uniting the American Saddlebred Horse. Summer 2015
www.american-saddlebred.co.uk
If you would like to sponsor a class or a championship for next year’s event (22nd May), or if
you would like to book an advert in the 2016 show programme, then please contact the United
Saddlebred Association to discuss your requirements. Email: [email protected] Class
sponsorship is £25 and Group Championship sponsorship is £50, which covers the cost of the
ribbons (and sashes for the championships). For all payments received before 1 st December (2015)
sponsors details will be included on the tails of the ribbons (and sashes), as well as within the
programme, website and in our show newsletter. In Hand & Ridden Saddlebred and Supreme
Championship sponsorship (we have two Supremes, an in hand and a ridden – ridden one has
already been taken) is £100 and covers the costs of the flower garlands and rosettes – full page
advert in show programme and newsletter, as well as in the show schedule and details on the rosette
ribbons. As stated in the opening page of this newsletter – we already have £970 pledged in
sponsorship for next years show – totally amazing everyone, but with 53 classes and 11
championships being offered next year, there are lots more classes still needing sponsorship.
As always I’m asking each and every member to try to raise cash sponsorship for one class or
championship. Perhaps you can also try your local tack store / feed merchant to see of they want to
donate goods or vouchers for any one of our championships as well or to advertise in our show
programme? Prices are listed along with the benefits of each package. Remember, this is YOUR
Association and YOUR Show and it will only ever be as good as YOU make it.
Donations of any size are most gratefully received. In addition, we also look for goods and prizes for
our various champions and for sponsors for rugs, saddle cloths and garlands or sashes for these too.
If you are interested in sponsoring any of these for the 2016 event then please get in touch with us to
discuss how you can help us make this show even better each year.
New classes, on competitors suggestions, include an American Shetland In Hand, Falabella In Hand
(these two classes still being discussed), Fine Harness, Paso Fino Country Pleasure, Ridden Pairs
(this is not like the normal “pairs” – don’t need to match and riders hold a paper chain between them
during the class and when it breaks, well that’s it you’re done) and an Open Parade class for horses to
show off any movements (extension, collection, piaffe, passage, lateral movements etc.) and to
emulate being at a “horse fair”. If there’s anything else you would like to see or alter, please get in
touch – we do listen, but once the schedule is done and up, it can’t be changed. This year we finished
just before 5.30 and with the added suggested classes are estimated finish time is 6pm, which is
about as late as we want it to go, as people need to get home with their horses. Stabling will not be an
issue this year, as we are on a block booking system, so horses can arrive anytime from 2pm
Saturday afternoon and the stables are booked for the duration until 9am Monday morning, so if
people did want to stay an extra night it will not be a problem.
Confirmed judges for 2016 are Rob Williams (ASB, MH, Paso & Driving classes) and Russell Marks
(Iberian, Friesian and other "open" FB classes).

OTHER COMPETITION results
Spellbound Tobias (& Paul Hayler) came 2nd in
the BD Winter Regionals (wearing his USA-UK
numnah), which secured them a place at the
Nationals at Hartpury in April. (Photo left, courtesy
Kevin Sparrow).
From Pat Pomp: Such an amazing time at the BD
National Championships! Tobias and Paul scored
68.44% and came 16th in Medium Open Freestyle.
It was funny when they read out the breeding as
the majority of the others were German/Dutch bred
out of such well known stallions and mares and
then Tobias was mmmh ... very interesting
breeding here ... mmmh American Saddlebred
..Shire mmmmh..!! Anyway they did us proud - he
looked amazing in the test - he trotted in quite calmly then the music started and up the centre
line to halt and when he saw all the people (the main stand was full and so much going on with
trade stands on the other side), you could see him go “OMG!! What is this!?!” Paul rode him just
beautifully and so proud of them both. Go Saddlebreds!!
Congratulations to Lucy Abbott and Spellbound
Magical Fate, who won a 2nd and a 3rd place in two
large classes at the Pachesham May Show (see photo

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Our AGM is held the evening before our Championship Show as we have found we have a
greater turnout when we do this.
Key points
Competitive endurance points to have more weighting than pleasure rides in our Hi Points, to be effective from 1st January 2015.
May Festival Show to move to Olney Grounds Equestrian Centre (Rugby) for 2016.
Present: Daniel & Lucy Abbott, Ann Blackaby, Kim Bonny, Dorothy Hasty, Lynn Herd, Lynn
Jarvis, Caroline Lockhart, Rachel Palmer, Pat Pomp, Paula Thomas & Sally Willink.
MINUTES FROM THE AGM for 23rd May 2015.
1. Apologies of absence was received from Jan Browne, Linda Colquhoun-Schoffield,
Rosemary Jinks & Rhian Williams.
2. Discussion of the Endurance / Pleasure Rides section of the Hi-Points and whether to
make changes suggested and if so whether to implement them from Jan 2015 or wait until Jan
2016: this was unanimously agreed by all those present that the suggested changes of more
weighting for competitive Endurance rides be adopted and to become effective from 1 st Jan
2015. We did receive to postal votes on this item as well, one for the changes and one against,
however the “yeahs” carried the motion. The proposed points system, put forward by Rachel
Palmer was also accepted and Paula (Thomas) is to amend the Hi-Point Booklet and send to
Lynn (Jarvis) for uploading onto the website. During this discussion Kim Bonny informed the
floor that Trec was now called Trec GB and run under it’s own group, not as part of the BHS
anymore.
3. Discussion about the May Festival Show and whether to remain at Moreton Morrell and
limit the breeds to Saddlebreds, Morgans and Paso Finos, or whether to change venues in
2016 so that the show can grow. Lynn (Jarvis) make a brief statement of the reasons behind
this proposal (mainly lack of stable numbers at Moreton Morrell) and the facilities on offer at
Olney Grounds Equestrian Complex, on of the venues that had been visited and found to be
ideal. Onsite facilities include a large indoor arena (larger than the current one at Moreton
Morrell), with a connected covered 40x20m arena that would be used as a collecting ring, a
60x100m outdoor surfaced arena, that could be used if we wished to expand, together with a
number of grass rings. On site facilities include a bar, café and restaurant and the Centre
25
Saddlebreds.UK uniting the American Saddlebred Horse. Summer 2015
www.american-saddlebred.co.uk
should have 50 10x12’ permanent stables by 2016, plus are willing to hire in as many
temporary (10x10) stables as we require. One postal vote was received against this move, but
all those present agreed to the proposal, so the motion was carried. Lynn also mentioned that
we could contact the Centre to see about having an evening meal with our AGM, to combine
the two. (NB Lynn has since done this and they are happy for the restaurant to be open – a one
course meal is £6 and a two-course meal is £8, comprising of something similar to: lasagne,
salad, garlic bread / apple pie and cream. Lynn will compile a booking form nearer the time for
this, both for competitors on the showground who may wish to use the facilities the evening
before the show, and also for our members attending the AGM).
4. Presentation of Hi-Point Awards 2014:
Paula Thomas presented all ribbon
winners with their awards from the 2014
scheme and will forward on the rosettes
and certificates to any winners that were
not present. (Photo right, Pat Pomp with
her awards, photo courtesy Ann Blackaby).
5. Open Forum/AOB.
Hat Rule: Dorothy (Hasty) discussed the
forthcoming hat rule, how it applies to
competitors and how a new replacement
hat is not yet on the market. Dorothy also
made note of our membership with the
Showing Council and how they are
attempting to get all societies to
standardise points – for example the hat
rule, judging panels, complaints procedure
and so forth. Lynn mentioned that we do
have an existing complaints procedure and
hat rule in the Show Rules and that we will
replace the word “BHS” with “current” for
the hat rules: “All Junior exhibitors (under
the age of 18) must wear a secured safety
hat, with harness, conforming to the latest
BHS (“current”) standards at all times when mounted, or in the show ring (including showing in
hand and harness).” And also on the Disclaimer form: “Riders are advised to wear a BHS
(“current”) secured safety hat at all times when mounted. Should ADULT riders wish to wear
traditional non-safety headgear they must sign to indicate they are aware of our safety policy
and choose not to follow it. This will be entirely at their own risk and the Organisers will not be
responsible in anyway for any incident that arises from such actions. All junior riders (under
18) MUST wear a safety hat in all classes. Signature is required by all competitors to
indicate agreement of show rules.”
Dorothy also mentioned about a new online programme that was being piloted by IC Media
(the publishers of Horse & Hound) who are becoming Time Inc Ltd – offering free advertising
and promotion and online entries. Dorothy left some literature, which was reviewed by Lynn
after the show – basically they are looking for events to use their on-line booking system for
entries. Although they are offering free publicity and advertising, which we shall investigate,
there are already systems available on the market for online entering and we do in fact accept
Paypal entries (all of these systems make a charge, which is borne by the competitor). As we
only have one event a year, the additional work involved for the show secretary, and the
26
Saddlebreds.UK uniting the American Saddlebred Horse. Summer 2015
www.american-saddlebred.co.uk
additional cost for the competitor, at this moment in time does not seem justified, so there
does not seem a need for this at the current time.
6. Close of meeting. The next AGM will be held the evening before our 2016 May Festival Show –
as stated above we will be holding it in conjunction with an evening meal at Olney Grounds
Equestrian Complex.
Ann Blackaby donated at the show a trophy to be presented at the end of the year in our Hi-Point
Awards to the “Appledore” horse who has the most accumulative (competitive) points during the year.
Owners of Appledore horses need do nothing more than enter the USA-UK Hi-Points – we will add
the points and the trophy will be presented to the highest scoring horse at the Awards Ceremony.
Ann also offered to help on the Committee in anyway – as you know those of us on the committee are
always hard pressed, so any offers of help are most welcome. We have appointed her as
“Recruitment Officer” – to help raise membership and registration levels. So, if you know of any
Saddlebreds (pure or part) out there who are not registered, or whose owners are not USA -UK
members, let Ann know and we will try to recruit them.
NEWS FROM THE REGISTRY

WALTER J BUSH – by Ann Blackaby
I first got to know Walter when I was looking for a mare to import
(1990) – little did I know who I was actually getting to know. I never did
buy anything from Walter, but I wish I had. When Walter was on the
phone he could talk for USA – he was a mine of information and there
didn’t seem to be anything he didn’t know about Saddlebreds.
A self-made man, he started an insurance company selling insurance
to US Soldiers & Airmen based in the UK and Europe. He lived in
England for many years, finally selling his business and investing in
Saddlebreds. Brought up in the Bush Family, he said that he and his
cousin Walter played on their grand-parents farm together and this is where he got his love of
Saddlebreds.
He would ring me up after his dinner in the evening and talk
for at least two hours. The “problem” with the time difference
was it was usually 2am in the morning for me – my exhusband used to get really annoyed “that Yank is on the
phone again”. I would get a phone call at least once a week
and we would chat about various blood lines in the
Saddlebred and how they had influenced the breed.
In 2003 I finally met Walter on a trip to the USA. He was a
lovely person, generous and as full of chat in life as he was
on the phone. I spent a few days at his stud and met his
horses – I was a bit like a child in a sweety shop! Apart from
the Saddlebreds, he also had mules, which he said he used
when on hunting trips. I met all the stallions and was
surprised at how small they were – standing at around 15hh –
15.2hh. I felt privileged to have known Walter and will always
have fond memories of my time at Desert Oasis Ranch
Desert’s Supreme Admiral – one of the leading studs at Desert Oasis Ranch.
Background: Walter Bush 25 September 1929 – 19 November 2014.
In setting up Desert Oasis Ranch in Arizona in the 1970’s, Walter also was instrumental in
computerising the Saddlebred Records for the ASHA. Having purchased his first lot of
broodmares, Walter travelled to Kentucky to find the best stallions to cross them to, but all the
records were on a card system – over 200,000 of them! Realising this would be an impossible
search, Walter donated the services of his insurance company experts, with the idea to make it
as user-friendly as possible. This formed the basis of what is now the sophisticated system used
by the ASHA.
Having this type of pedigree information to hand enabled Walter to select the best bloodlines to
cross and in 1985 Desert’s Supreme Admiral was foaled, predominantly of the “Chief” line
(Harrison Chief, co-foundation sire of the American Saddlebred), who became one of the
prominent studs standing at Desert Oasis Ranch. This breeding programme produced the first
horse that had a win not only in the Three Gaited World Grand Championships, but in the Five
Gaited World Grand Championships as well. Notable horses from Oasis include Desert
Supreme Memories, CHChandler, CHMemories’ Citation, CHMemories’ Paragon and of course
Desert Supreme Admiral.
