Australia is a non-profit
organisation which aims
to help and empower the
indigenous communities in
the Philippines. It also plans
to assist the deprived regions
of different countries to seek
innovative solutions to some
of the world’s most pressing
livelihood and development
problems.
“Our goal is to empower
and increase income capacity of the locals by running
community-led development projects,” said Abadilla
who has experienced what it
was like living in a depressed
community during one of
her missionary trips to the
Badjao community then
situated in Malitam Dos,
Batangas City. “The current efforts to fight hunger
and reach the poorest of the
poor is one thing, to equip
these communities with the

so they would become selfsustaining, self-directing,

Nanay Auring is Mother of the Year for 2014
E
IGHTY-five-year-old Aurelia
Cerdana—or Nanay Auring
to those who grew up to her
kindness and generosity—spent
most of her life taking care of
her doting husband and two
lovely daughters. But she further
shared her love to neighbours
who sometimes asked for some
of her freshly grown vegetables,
to relatives who needed assistance to complete their education, to a community who wanted to have their chapel rebuilt,
to strangers who required aid, to
friends of her daughter Frances,
who always thought she had the
best suman sa ibos in the world.
Nanay Auring gave herself
to everyone without restraint
and second-guessing. It doesn’t
come as a surprise anymore that
she took home the Mother of the
Year Award.
The prestigious and priceless
award, given on 10 May 2014,
was handed by the Ilonggo Association of Victoria Inc (IAVI)
during their dinner dance held
at Altona’s Grand Star Reception.
It was a fitting recognition since
the following day was Mother’s
Day.
To further honour her, one of
her granddaughters Marigold
Espiga gave a heartfelt message
to Nanay Auring. She recounted
the humble beginnings of her
grandmother’s family and how
she grew up in a simple town
called Cabatuan, Iloilo. She also
shared many examples of her
lola’s generosity all throughout
the years even when she already
moved to Australia in 1987 to
live with her daughter’s family,
as well as her and her cousins’
personal and intimate experiences with her.
An award she never
expected
Nanay Auring expressed her
surprise over the recognition.
Although she already knew that
there was such an award, she
never thought it would go to her.
She said in jest, “When I heard
about suman sa ibos, I asked,
‘Is there someone else who also
makes suman sa ibos?’ Little did
I know that they were actually
referring to me! I am very elated
with this award. After the function, I couldn’t help but tear up
and thank the Lord God for these
people who acknowledged the
goodness I have done for my
family and others,” she told The
Philippine Times.
Simple but effective
parenting
Nanay Auring also took the
time to share a very simple parenting style that proved to be
effective. She told The Philippine
Times, “When my husband was
still alive, we made sure that we
would do what any good parent
would for their children. We
taught them how to be good, responsible people, and to fear and
love God. We sent them to school
and gave them the education they
deserved even if some would already tell us what a wrong idea
it was. After all, my daughters
would marry and be taken away
from us by their husbands.” Her
two daughters, Mrs. Cora Demate,
a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry graduate, is now a Registered
Chemist and Mrs. Frances Espiga,
completed her Bachelor of Science in Commerce major in Accounting. Both are now living in
Victoria, Australia.
At present, Nanay Auring
finds satisfaction and contentment living with her family
and friends. She still continues
to tend to her garden, support
anyone who needs her, and make
suman sa ibos. For her, she has
already achieved what she wanted: a simple life surrounded by
the people and things she loves
and holds dearly.

Missing the link to our roots
BEGINNING 2 June, the Department
of Immigration and Border Protection
permanently closed lodgment of new applications for visas under Other Family and
Non-Contributory Parent Visas. Those which
will be included are Parent visa (subclass
103), Aged Parent visa (subclass 804), Aged
Dependent Relative visa (subclasses 114 and
838), Remaining Relative visa (subclasses
115 and 835) and Carer visa (subclasses
116 and 836). According to reports, the
government priority for family stream will be
parents, children and contributory parents of
Australian citizens and permanent residents.
This decision could have implications for
migrants like us who may still have family
back home, or future migrants who might
want to come to work in Australia and settle
permanently with their family. The focus of
this new government move seem to prioritise
those who can or who have potential to
contribute to the economy, or those who
will not put strain on medical and welfare
government allocations. Other options for
these “marginalised” groups have been
offered, but would cost an arm and a leg for
those lodging the application. For example,
according to a press release by the Migration
Institute of Australia, opting to apply for
Contributory Parent Visa instead of the now
scrapped Non-Contributory Parent Visa,
will cost approximately $125,460 for two
parents, including visa application charges
and medicare surcharges. Cost for one parent
is $59,490, and this amount has to be paid
prior to the granting of the visa.
It may be true that non-contributory family
members does not make any or significant
economic contributions, but their social
contributions are paramount, especially for
sustaining migrant families. How many of us
can attest to how our own parents help us

with caring for our children while we are at
work, or how they ease doing house chores
for us. They are a big help around the house,
which enable us to mind the business or
conduct our own professions. Moreover, the
bigger contribution they give to our migrant
families is keeping us grounded in our own
culture. While we have already accepted a
new way of living, our parents remind us of
who we are as far as language, customs and
practices are concerned.
In a country that hails itself as open to
multiculturalism, it should realise that
these non-contributory parents are drivers
of the culture of their countries of birth,
and work painstakingly such that their
children and grandchildren wouldn’t forget
the culture of their home countries, so that
they can pass this on to future generations
of migrants. Because of their commitment, it
keeps multiculturalism robust and a reality
in Australia.
For skilled migrants coming to Australia,
the MIA said that they might get discouraged
from settling because it would be too costly
to bring two parents Down Under. They
might consider working in countries more
open to parents such as Canada or the United
States. The press release also noted that
Asians still observe filial piety, on account of
which children pay respects to their parents
and desire to offer them a more comfortable
life, especially after rearing them, sending
them through school and sacrificing personal
comforts just to give their children a good
life. This is also true of Filipino culture.
The social contribution by “non-contributory migrants” have far-reaching and longlasting impact to society. What they give will
actually sustain the multicultural dynamics
in Australia. We hope the government wasn’t
too quick to discriminate them.
ECCV enhances governance for
multicultural community organisations
VICTORIAN multicultural
organisations will be given strategic and practical support to improve their governance through a
new project initiative launched
by the Ethnic Communities’
Council of Victoria (ECCV).
The Futures Project, funded
by the Scanlon Foundation and
in partnership with the Australian Multicultural Foundation
and Leadership Victoria, will
provide governance support for
volunteer-driven, ethno-specific
and multicultural organisations.
The project aims to provide
a governance model through
which multicultural communities will work together through
their respective organisations,
building and strengthening
cross-cultural connections and
relationships.
ECCV chairperson Eddie Micallef said there was demand for
this project.
“This project has been created
to address an identified need for
greater governance of ethnic and
multicultural organisations; a
need that ECCV recognises will
continue to challenge the sector,” he said.
“The mentoring element of
the project will assist ethnic and
multicultural organisations who
are finding it difficult to plan
for the future and more recently
established organisations that
need support to enable them to
thrive and grow.”
The Futures Project aims to
provide a high level of information, resources and opportunities around governance which
will work to build the confidence of ethnic and multicultural organisations to actively
participate and contribute to the
social, cultural and economic
vibrancy of community life in
Victoria.

Concerned Members of PFVI
hold dinner-dance to save
Laverton property
The Concerned Members
of the Philippine Fiesta of
Victoria, Inc. (CMPFVI) held
its latest event, “Second Renewal of Friendship to Save
the Laverton Property”. The
fundraising event was aimed
at informing and updating the
community about the group’s
efforts to save the Laverton
property and its legal position
in the court case filed against
the current Philippine Fiesta
of Victoria Inc. (PFVI) Management Committee. The
funds raised on the night will
help support the legal costs.
The event was held last 17
May 2014 at the Whitehorse
Club East Burwood.
In her opening speech,
Maina Walkley, the leader
of the Concerned Members,
thanked those who attended
the event, the supporters
and donors. “Your presence
means that you share our
cause to save the Laverton
property and restore the
integrity of the PFVI,” she
said. Walkley explained it
was not the intention of the
group to file a case but the
court action was triggered
when 19 Concerned Members were expelled. “The
only plausible reason is to
silence us for we have been
raising questions. But why?”
she asked.
Walkley said the group is
confident that the current
litigation will shed some
light on the many questions
they have been asking. “To
be in the light means being
transparent, open and inclusive not selective. This is the
organisation we want,” she
said, inviting those present to
take part. “There is strength
in numbers especially those
that follow the path of righteousness,” she said.
During the night, raffle
prizes and Zumba sessions
were also held.
DJ and music were provided by A&A Production.
Masters of ceremonies were
Roy Carbungco and Rosalie
Ortiz Riddle.

the group, contact Maina

Case update
Recently, the Concerned
Members filed a State-
ment of Complaints with
the Magistrates Court of
Victoria. The current management submitted a counterclaim.
Meanwhile, the current
management has scheduled
an Annual General Meeting
last 18 May 2014 but this
was postponed. “It was part
of our demand. There was
negotiation to and fro and
they finally agreed to cancel
the May 18 AGM. No AGM
or election will be called unless they notify our solicitors
10 to 15 days beforehand
of their intention,” Walkley
said.
Both the Concerned Members and the current PFVI
are not issuing details of the
case saying the case is now
in court.

Community education advocates
respect, dignity in ageing
FIFTEEN bilingual Macedonians and Filipinos have
been trained to deliver community education to seniors
groups on “respect and
dignity in ageing” as part
of the Ethnic Communities
Council of Victoria (ECCV)
elder abuse prevention
project. The sessions are
designed to be conducted
in the first language of the
seniors. Trained bilingual
workers tell stories or “nar-

of the issues facing older
people, who may be subject
to mistreatment by someone
they know and trust. They
can provide information on
where to go for help if you
or someone you know is
being mistreated. Sessions
commenced in April 2014.

and waiting. Things happened too fast for them- first
they have Jesus, alive and
well, then He dies of an
ignominious death, resurrects, and appears to some
of them. Then He leaves
them again as He ascends to
Heaven. But He promises a
Helper. They face persecution and possibly death too.
The promised Helper would
be a great consolation! They
needed more than adrenaline to fire them up.
Then a great event takes
place in the Bible, as “the
day of Pentecost” (Acts 2:1).
It is the day on which the
Holy Spirit makes a unique
visit to earth and infuses
those gathered with great
power and the gifts to fulfil
their mission to preach the
Gospel to all nations. Suddenly this band of confused
believers is transformed
into world changers. The
disciples begin speaking in
strange tongues drawing a
crowd of amazed Jews who
each hears his own language. Peter, once the rugged
fisherman, is now Peter the
bold evangelist.
Is Pentecost still relevant
and happening today? I
believe so. The work of God
endures forever. The fire He
started on Pentecost will
continue to burn ablaze in
believers who seek a closer
walk with Jesus. Pentecost
will happen again and again
and again. We witness revival all the time, in our
churches and communities.
We cannot preach the
Gospel without the Holy
Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit
that energises us every day
to live a life that is full of
hope despite our trials and
tribulations. It is the Holy
Spirit that helps us run our
earthly race until we say
good-bye and welcome the
eternal life offered to us.
The Holy Spirit renews us,
regenerates us, convicts us
of sin and sets us free from
our bondages so we can live
a more abundant life.

coming when I received
the baptism in the Holy
Spirit through the Catholic
Charismatic Renewal. It is
an experience I will always
remember. I call it my spiritual birthday. The power
from on high has moved me
to become a better person.
And this is a daily calling.
At times we make the mistake of receiving the gifts
of the Holy Spirit once and
assume that the anointing
will be there forever. We
need to pray for an infilling
of this blessing every day,
every moment if possible.
The promised Helper truly
becomes our best friend.
In the movie Turbo, the
snail Theo finishes the race
with amazing speed, supported by good friends. After
going through many hurdles,
he reaches the goal with determination and his uniqueness as a snail (tuck and roll)
as his last source of strength.
Much like our spiritual
journey, we need help to
run the race. The Holy Spirit
will provide this. But it will
also take perseverance and
humbling action from us to
make it fully happen. We
need to cooperate with Him.
The Holy Spirit will look for
fruit too. The power He gives
us is not the turbo spirit of
nitrous oxide or adrenaline,
but a lasting grace to love as
God loves and do good like
Jesus. Many will advise us,
like Chet, Theo’s brother:
“that we all have our limits... the sooner we accept
this and realise our pitiful
existence, the happier we
will be...”
If we include God in our
life, we realise that we are
called to greater things that
we can imagine. Through
Christ we can discover that
everything is possible and
with the Holy Spirit by
our side, we can have the
strength to carry on and
when that time comes, we
can arrive at our heavenly
destination with grace and
beauty.

JUNE 2014 THE PHILIPPINE TIMES www.philtimes.com.au
Experiencing moments of balance and grace
Neil Daculan
FRIENDS often ask me
how I got to this point in my
life where the diaconate ordination is within my grasp
while attending to fulltime
work and domestic life.
In everyday language, I
call it balance. In a more
spiritual tone, I call it grace.
It involves human will.
But above all, it is a vocation – a response to God’s
everyday challenge to live
a Christian life of service
to my family and His community.
It is not without hiccups
that I juggle between attending school at Catholic
Theological College (CTC)
in the city to finish my
bachelor’s degree in Theology while sometimes caring
for my sick 4-year-old and
emailing my professor for
my non-attendance. On a
regular basis, after my work
as a case manager from 9am
to 5pm in Dandenong, I
scoot back home and pick up
my eldest, Andie, and then
drive to our carer to secure
my other daughter, Myrth.
All the while thinking of my
6 pm class at CTC, I drop off
my eldest at her swimming
class and my youngest to her
Auntie Precy’s house in Glen
Waverley. By the time I am
humming the tune of Billy
Joel in the freeway, I think
of my wife, Angelica, who
is probably exhausted after
her 10-hour duty as a theatre
nurse in the Blackburn suburb. At times, temper would
flare when I reach home at
around 10 pm drained from
a cacophony of activities
while faced with the husband’s task of mopping the
floor and washing the dishes
before I hit the comfort of a
welcoming bed at around
11 pm.
And the cycle would repeat itself three times a week
until the weekend beams its
incomparable smile: a time
to slow down, go for long
beach walks (and sometimes
fishing!), playing Barbie
with my daughters and putting on the apron and assisting my wife as a kitchen
hand in her own Masterchef
environment.
There are no illusions in
being a deacon.
I know that Jesus Christ
said that He came “not to
be served but to serve, and
to give His life as a ransom
for many” (Mark 10:45).
This is my real-life context
of living His challenge,
within the confines of our
three-bedroom unit at Noble
Park – a home away from the
bustling metropolis called
Cebu City where my faith
was nurtured by my family,
friends and even not-sofriendly people I came in
contact with.
However, this boundary has been stretched far
beyond what my strength
could muster, as I am now at
the throes of public ministry
in the permanent diaconate.
Where I cannot go armed
with my sheer will to serve,
there is God’s grace that
prods me on: a symphony
of instruments given at the
moment of longing, even
of plain silence as a way of
asking.
God works in mysterious
ways with tangible results.
No wonder the word vocation itself is a revelation. It is
from the Latin word vocare,
“to call” and another one,
vox, “voice.” God is The
Voice calling us to hear Him
in the silence of our hearts
despite the frantic pace of a
migrant life.
(Editor’s note: Neil was installed as an acolyte on 25
May, together with Chris
Creo and Danny Jumonong,
in preparation for their ordination as permanent deacons for the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne on 15
November.)

Holy Infant Jesus Charismatic Group
THE Holy Infant Jesus Charismatic
Prayer Group, led by Mila Satorre,
celebrated its 19th anniversary with a
healing mass and fellowship last 2 May
2014 at St Peter’s Church in Clayton.
After the mass, a get-together was held
at the St Peter’s Hall where food and
drinks were shared. The members also
had some mini dance performances,
an ati-atihan parading the Infant Jesus
statue and dancing.
Fr. Joey officiated the mass.

The seed
Abadilla’s exposure to
the lives of the Badjaos happened in 2002 during her
first missionary trip with
the Connect City Church
to the Philippines. She, together with her husband
Ps Buddy and two children
RG and Ian, lived with the
community in their houses
for a few days to minister
to their needs. “During this
time, they were illiterate (no
read, no write), had no identity (not registered with the
government), no concept of
hygiene, no clinics, hospital,
toilets, school, medicines,
electricity, postal service
and potable drinking water.
Then, there was no government institution nor NGOs
that cater to the needs of
these people,” said Abadilla
of her observation. She further shared that it was during this visit that Abadilla
realised that “God began to
change my heart and gave
me a heart of compassion for
these people.”
From that first missionary
trip, she grew more engaged
with yearly visits which also
extended to other communities. To pay it forward and
become a blessing to others,
Abadilla thought of putting up the foundation and
facilitating the relationship
between generous donors
and needy communities.
Current projects Frontline
Fo u n d a t i o n’ s c u r r e n t
projects include livelihood
development projects for
the Badjao community in
Batangas City, Philippines,
wherein a start-up capital for
the buy-and-sell business is
aimed to provide income to
the families and help them
rise above poverty.
Apart from the pilot
project in Batangas, future
projects are lined up for
the holistic development
of a number of communities in the Philippines and
eventually be extended to
South America (Peru), Africa
(Uganda) and regions of the
world that need support.
The organisation will do this
by running community-led
and designed development
projects which will focus
on tapping existing local
resources and inculcate initiative among the locals to
promote ownership of the
projects.

Flores de Mayo held in Liverpool
Richard Ford
NSW—The 19th Annual Santa Cruzan Flores De
Mayo was held at All Saints
Liverpool on 18 May. It is a
time of celebration for the
event that is in two parts
– the Flores de Mayo is a
month long festival in honour of the Virgin Mary culminating in the Santa Cruzan,
a parade held on the last day
of the festival in honour of
Reyna Helena.
The event started with
Mass at 11am led by Father
Julian, followed by a luncheon opened by the current
President of Fil-Oz Liverpool, Cora Paras. The day included dance performances
from the Fil-Oz Dancers, Visayan Dance Group and the
newly-formed Fil-Oz Liverpool Junior Dance Group under the direction of Carmen
Fraser, former leader of FilOz Liverpool Dancers. Some
of the highlights of the day
were a Filipino Martial Arts
Demo led by Sikaran Master
Jesse Diestro, and singing by
Stephanie Bernardo. But one
cannot miss mentioning the
delightful little angels who
always looked so beautiful
on the day with the rest
of the Princesses and the
Queens in the Procession.
Three of the guest speakers
present voiced their opposition to Federal AttorneyGeneral George Brandis’s
proposal to repeal Amendments to the Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth),
especially section 18c of
the Act. The Federal MP
for Fowler, Chris Hayes, the
State MP for Liverpool, Mr
Paul Lynch and the People
of Australia Ambassador
and Founding President of
APCO Inc., Dr Cen Amores,
who all spoke very strongly
on how we as a multicultural country abhor such
moves. In brief, she stated,
“this isn’t about restricting
free speech – this is about
protecting vulnerable Australians from being unfairly
discriminated against or humiliated based on their race.
All forms of discrimination
need to be wiped out in this
country - and removing Section 18c is not the answer,
which makes it unlawful
for people to vilify others
on racial grounds.” Other
guests present were the
Philippine Consul General
Anne Jalondoon Louis and
for the first time Liverpool
Councillor Mr Gus Balloot
and the President of APCO
Inc. (Alliance of Philippine
Community Organisation)
Ruben Amores.

The choosing of Sagalas

of the event was studied
with care. Some gowns were
imported from the Philippines as with the crowns. It
took the group two months
for the preparation.

Health waiver
DO you have a dependent who has been assessed as not meeting the
health requirement?
Here are some information about skilled health
waivers.
Whenever a Medical
Officer of the Commonwealth (MOC) has determined that an applicant
does not meet the health
requirement, a health
waiver can be provided
for certain visa subclasses
such as some family visa
subclasses, certain skilled
visas or offshore humanitarian visas.
Health waiver is allowed
if the visa case officer is
satisfied that the costs to
the community and access
of Australian citizens and
permanent residents to
the health care and community services in short
supply would not be unduly availed of.
The Department of
Health and Ageing deter-
mines which health care
and community services
are in “short supply” and
are likely to result in “Prejudice to Access” (PtA). At
present, organ transplants,
blood plasma products and
radiotherapy for malignancy are identified as PtA.
Health Waiver is available for 186 Employer
Nomination scheme (Temporary Residence Transition Stream only) and
187 Regional Sponsored
Migration Scheme (Temporary Residence Transition Stream only ).
You will be notified by
the immigration department if a health waiver is
being considered and the
opinion of the State/Territory where you intend to
live may also be secured.
You and your family’s
contribution to Australia,
the skills, trades or qualifications you will bring, the extent to which you and your
family are able to mitigate
the potential costs and any
compelling and compassionate circumstances shall
be assessed. Information
regarding English language
skills, future employment
prospects of family members
of working age in Australia
and if any family member
is currently enrolled in any
formal education classes are
important to declare.
If the costs involved
are greater than $500,000
and/or Prejudice to Access
(PtA) is identified, your
case will be referred to
the Director of Migration
Health Policy Section for
recommendation.
A health waiver cannot
be exercised where the
grant of the visa would
likely result in “undue”
costs to the Australian
community or prejudice
the access to health care
and community services
of an Australian citizen or
permanent resident.
Our kababayan, who has
a son with cerebral palsy,
has been informed by DIBP
to apply for a Health Waiver for his son. He needs to
provide evidence that the
health care and community
service will not be unduly
accessed. Also, any information regarding potential
contributions to the Australian community would
be helpful. Furthermore, he
needs to supply details of
any compelling and compassionate circumstances
to support a health waiver.
Announcement from the Department
of Immigration and Border Protection
Non-Contributory Parent and Other Family visas have closed to
new applications
From 2 June, we have permanently closed the following visa subclasses in
the Family Stream of the Migration Programme to new applications:
•
Parent visa (subclass 103)
•
Aged Parent visa (subclass 804)
•
Aged Dependent Relative visa (subclasses 114 and 838)
•
Remaining Relative visa (subclasses 115 and 835)
•
Carer visa (subclasses 116 and 836).
The visas will be closed to new applications before the start of the 2014-15
Migration Programme year. For more information about this announcement, go to http://www.immi.

Innovations of Megaworld townships
From prudent conceptualization to well-planned execution, Megaworld remains
unprecedented in revolutionizing township communities in the Philippines.
I
T all started as a vision.
An ambitious dream
for the country to introduce
world-class urban communities that would provide
a lifestyle concept of live,
work, play, and learn in one
vibrant location.
And now that vision is a
reality.
For almost 25 years, under
the tutelage of its chairman
and CEO Dr. Andrew L. Tan,
Megaworld has come a long
way in its continued quest to
become what it is today – the
country’s leading real estate
developer and number 1
Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) developer and
landlord in the Philippines.
Through its careful project
planning, decision-making,
and continuous innovating
to its property development
it undertakes, the company
had successfully perfected
an innovative blueprint for
urban communities that provide endless possibilities of
everything you need in just
one location.
As a result, Megaworld’s
master-planned communities have reinvented the
country’s urban landscape
by imbibing the phenomenal “live-work-play-learn”
formula that the company
has pioneered in the Philippines to achieve sustainable
living.
That’s the culture of innovation at Megaworld townships.
Megaworld townships
bring the fusion of everything you need to live the
good life – providing seamless integration of upscale
condominiums, lifestyle
malls, wellness centers,
retail hotspots, high-end office towers, and even worldclass learning institutions.
Due to phenomenal success of building signature
townships, Megaworld has
become an icon and inspiration to other local property
developers – emulating the
same township principle
that the company has been
known for.
Since then, Megaworld
has continuously expanded
its brand portfolio to bring
more innovative large-scale,
master-planned mixed-use
developments in the Philippines like Eastwood City in
Libis, Quezon City; Newport City in Global City;
Woodside City in Pasig;
The Mactan Newtown in
Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu; and
the Iloilo Business Park in
Mandurriao district, Iloilo
City. The company also has
residential and commercial
developments in Makati’s
Central Business District
(CBD) and Chinatown in
Binondo, Manila.
Discover the best of lifestyle townships only at
Megaworld.
McKinley Hill
McKinley Hill, a huge
50-hectare township in
Fort Bonifacio, is by far the
largest development project of the Andrew Tan-led
company in Metro Manila.
With the perfect community in mind, the township features an upscale
residential village, villas and
condominiums, office buildings, a Venetian-themed

Were you born after 1965?
Carlo Ruscitti
I am not a Labor or Liberal
Party supporter but merely
a swinging voter who has
voted for the last 50 years.
I remember voting in
1972 for Gough Whitlam,
Labor leader of that time.
Then, due to his mess,
I reverted back to the
coalition led by Fraser in
1975 and following that I
again voted for the Labor
movement with Bob Hawke.
Following the Hawke/
Keating recession we had
to have, I decided that the
conservatives were the way
to a more stable government
for Australia and I think
the following graph will
demonstrate the reasons
why and what happens
when the labour government
comes into power.
The graph outlines
ups and downs under the
different Political Parties
(Labor top & Liberal bottom).
Under the successive Labor
governments, Australia has
consistently and every time
been put in serious deficits;
and this time around the
deficits are humongous
where whoever will govern
in the future will not make
much difference to us
ordinary people.
For all of you born after
1965, you will be looking
to work until you turn 70
years of age. And that is
not all, I believe in time to
come we will all be means
tested before we will see
any significant pension and
again by 2017 our pensions
will no longer increase to a
percentage of the minimum
wage but indexed to the CPI
which is a mere 2.9% per
year, that means if you are a
couple living on an average
$525 per week your pension
will increase at best $15.23
a week.
Let me quote an article
from Herald Sun 9th
October 2011
•
Despite compulsory
super, 70% of Australians
will have inadequate
superannuation savings,
• Those now aged 35 to 44
could expect an average
payout of:
• $183,000 for men at age
65 and $93,000 for women
at age 60
These statistics have
been recently upgraded and
revised by Association of
Superannuation Funds of
Australia on 1st September
2013 and the revised average
payout balance is:
• $105,000 for men at age
65 and $65,800 for women
at age 60
At a glance in any one’s
language you can see the
disastrous performance of
the industry superannuation
funds which forced the
Federal Government to
amend the legislation in
September 2007 for the
mums and dads to set up
their own Self Managed
S u p e r a n n u a t i o n Fu n d s
(SMSF) and take control
of their money and invest
in the most appropriate
manner and diversify.
Irrespective of which
party will govern this
wonderful nation in the
future, it will not make any
difference to our pension and
retirement fund. Australia
can no longer afford to keep
all of the retiring public
on a full pension and that
will require our Industry
Superannuation to top up
the government pension.
This sentiment was agreed
by Mr. Peter Costello on the
Andrew Bolte show.
What is the option now
for Australians born after
1965?
Well fellow Australians
we now do not have an
option but consider in
earnest our investment
options and there are
many, but in line with good
investment strategies we
must take control of our
money and make it work for
us, we have to:
• Learn how to save and
how to make your money
grow
• Set your realistic financial
goals
• Work those strategies
until you achieve our goals.
Three must do steps for
you:
1. Stop renting and
purchase your own home
and establish a concise
budget savings plan to pay
off your mortgage as soon
as possible;
2. Set up a long term
investment plan using the
equity of your home and or
cash deposits to help you
achieve the goal of having
a comfortable and enjoyable
retirement;
3. Check your industry
Superannuation balance
and if you have over
$120,000 set up a SMSF
with the view of investing in
a property, where you have
a good income performing
strategy.
It is important to
understand your reasons for
purchasing an investment
property. Remember you
are investing to secure your
financial independence,
which means you want to
create a passive income
and build equity that
will keep pace with the
eroding factors of inflation.
Set a goal and with
good planning and tight
budgeting, do whatever it
takes to achieve it.

Side A to perform
in Melbourne
Carol Banawa sings songs of our hearts
Sherilyn Ramon
BEFORE Sarah Geronimo
ruled the ASAP stage and Angeline Quinto dominated the
teleserye theme songs, there
was Carol Banawa. Carol had
her start as a young talent
for the 90s show “Ang TV”
and soon starred alongside
Superstar Nora Aunor in the
teleserye “Bituin” and with
Philippine showbiz greats in
the movie “Tanging Yaman”.
But it was her crystal clear
singing voice that she became
more known for, lending her
voice to ABS CBN’s drama
show “Maalaala Mo Kaya”
which is still being played
today.
Carol left the Philippines
in 2003 and is now living
in Virginia USA with her
husband and two kids. But
leaving the country doesn’t
mean she has fully left showbiz behind. She came home
in 2010 to record an album
titled “My Music, My Life”.
Carol said that although she
is now a nurse by profession, she still welcomes any
chance to sing and entertain
her fans.
Liz Honey Promotions
and Entertainment has again
given us an amazing night.
We did not only have a great
time listening to Carol sing
her hits but had a night full
of laughter as well, with
stand up comedian Amazing
Peanut keeping everyone in
stitches with his antics like
his Doble Kara number and
Beauty Pageant skit.
Local Filipino talents also
shone on stage like CJ and his
own version of Jackson Five
hits, 9-year-old Shanelle and
her rendition of Katy Perry’s
Roar and stage “regulars”
Charlene Sotelo and Grace
Iwasaki.
You can keep yourself up
to date with Carol’s whereabouts by following her on
Twitter @IamCarolBanawa.
If you are heading back home
and want to see more of
Amazing Peanut’s antics, you
can catch him at Punchline

in Laguna on Fridays and
Saturdays or watch him on

MELBOURNE fans of iconic Filipino band Side A are in
for a treat as they will get a
chance to see them perform
live in a concert organised
by Clazzy Events. Side A’s
Melbourne gig is the last leg
of a four-city concert tour
downunder in November
dubbed “Side A: Playing Live
in Australia” which include
stints in Sydney, Perth and
Brisbane.
Side A is arguably the
most durable active band in
the Philippines today. The
band was formed in 1985
and has since attracted a
huge following for its distinctive music ranging from pop
to rock and R&B. It became
hugely successful in the 90s
when the band churned out a
series of hits, established record album sales and earned
recognition from the Awit
Awards, the most prestigious
music awards in the Philippines. In 1996, for instance,
the band recorded the hit
song “Forevermore” which
became Awit Awards Song
of the Year and earned for
the band the Award for Best
Performance by a Group for
the third consecutive year.
Today, nearly three decades since its birth, Side A
is still creating quite a stir
in the Philippine entertain-
ment scene. Its longevity and
staying power owes a lot to
the passion and professionalism of its members: Joey
Generoso (rhythm guitar,
lead vocals), Naldy Gonzalez (keyboard, vocals), Ernie
Severino (drums, vocals),
Leevon Cailao (lead guitar,
vocals), and Ned Esguerra
(bass guitar, vocals). Seasoned performers all, these
boys are still drawing huge
crowds to their regular gigs in
Manila’s venues, as well as to
their stints in the provinces
and overseas. Side A concerts
typically feature a repertoire
of original hits, remakes and
covers of soothing ballads
to feet-stamping rock and
R&B – a perfect treat for the
nostalgic music fan of the
80s, 90s and beyond. Come
November, Side A will bring
this brand of entertainment
to its fans in Australia.

Osang wows audience in Melbourne
Sherilyn Ramon
The Filipino Community
Cooperative Ltd on its 30th
anniversary brought Osang
to perform in Australia to
serve as inspiration to Filipino Australians—that one
can reach their dreams regardless of who and where
they are in their lives at
present, and they couldn’t
have chosen a better person
to do so.
Who hasn’t heard of Rose
“Osang” Fostanes? We all
know her as the caregiver
who rose to fame overnight
when she became the grand
winner of XFactor Israel.
But her journey to fame did
not come overnight. Osang’s
story began when as a little
girl her father walked out on
them, being the oldest child
she joined various singing
contests to help support
her family. When she was
23 she started working as
a caregiver in Egypt. After
four years she transferred to
Lebanon and worked there
for 10 years before going to
Israel where she had been
working for seven years. She
had her share of bad employers and hardships but was
fortunate enough to have an
employer who allowed her
to do gigs with her band on
Fridays and Saturdays. It
was during that time that
joining the XFactor was suggested to her. Osang almost
didn’t join after being turned
down from another singing
contest; but as fate would
have it, she did and as they
say, the rest is history.
Melbourne was lucky
enough to be part of her
firsts: first stop in Australia
and first live show overseas.
She admitted to being nervous at first but she shone
as she sang songs that have
become part of her journey
to being a star, which included her audition piece:
Shirley Bassey’s “This is My
Life” and her winning song
Frank Sinatra’s “My Way”.
It’s no wonder Israel fell
Jerson Trinidad
in love with her. Not only
does she have an amazing
strong voice, but a friendly
and charming personality
as well.
Supporting Osang were
two local Filipino talent
show winners as well. Melbourne boy Jerson Trinidad
who won Bert Newton’s
“New Faces” opened the
show with John Legend’s
“Ordinary People” which
I daresay is as good as the
original. And Sydney-based
Lillian delos Reyes from Tim
Webster’s “You’re A Star”
wowed and made the crowd
laugh with her Tina Turner
songs and funny antics. She
was a star in her own right
that day as she not only
owned the stage but made
sure the crowd was engaged
and had a great time.
Gloria Molina of Clazzy
Events helped with the logistics in Melbourne while
Kate Andres was the concert
producer. Albert Pineda
hosted the show which was
supported by the Filipino
Community Council of Victoria.

Miss FASX Australia 2014 Lisa-Maree Bakker
Virginia Landrito Balanon
This time last year, the
24-year old country girl
Lisa-Maree Bakker never
thought that she would
be on TV and making her
modelling dream a reality. The young lady
from Sale, Victoria never
imagined that she would
have the once-in-a-lifetime
experience of discovering
the “model” in her. She
never expected the amazing FASX experience to
happen.
Born of Dutch father
and Filipino mother, Lisa
describes herself as an independent, honest and upfront woman, who strives
to be a role model and
inspiration to young girls,
especially her younger
sister Lee-Annee.
Modelling has always
been Lisa-Maree’s greatest dream. Following her
heart’s desire, she moved
to Melbourne to explore
opportunities toward a
modelling career. Talking
about coincidence, Project
628 at that time launched
its modelling-reality TV
competition and called for
interested actors-models to
be part of the show. That
was the beginning of LisaMaree’s debut to the fashion and modelling world.
Confident that she’s got
the qualities of a runway princess, Lisa-Maree
Photos by
Gilvertt Concepcion
joined FASX. With her
height advantage, standing 5 feet 9 inches (177
centimetres) tall, gorgeous
smile, natural talent and
genuine passion for modelling, Lisa-Maree Bakker
won the title of Miss FASX
Australia 2014.
FASX adventures and
challenges have made a
big impact on Lisa-Maree’s
life. She said that FASX
served as the first step
in realising a modelling
career.
“I have always believed
that to be able to achieve
your dream, you have to
have faith in yourself, love
yourself and be happy.
Work hard and you can be
Miss FASX Australia 2014
LIsa-Maree Bakker (Photo: Project 628)
the person you want to be
in life.” Lisa shared that
her growing up years were
not at all good. But despite
the hard times, she tried
her best to be brave and to
battle life’s challenges.
She added, “FASX helped
me discover my strengths
(especially in modelling),
build up my confidence
even more and made me
listen and learn from people’s experiences.”
For Lise-Maree, FASX
also served as a venue
to meet new people and
develop friendship. “I
met 11 great girls who are
all talented and unique.
Altogether, we had fun
filming the episodes, going
to photo shoots and eating
Pringles and other food.”
Aside from holding the
title of Miss FASX Australia, Lisa-Maree also won
a return trip to the Philippines. She has visited
the Philippines twice and
stayed mostly in Tacloban,
her mother’s hometown.
Lisa looks forward to her
visit to the Philippines
set in February 2015 and
hopes to see how Tacloban’s rehabilitation and
recovery programs are doing. She plans to explore
opportunities for her, and
also FASX, to help out
in the endeavours. LisaMaree has two sponsored
children, Joel in Uganda
and Genylee from the Philippines, who she plans to
meet when she visits in
February next year.
Where to after FASX? Lisa-Maree stated she expects
to be engaged promoting
the next season of the reality TV and serving as ambassador of the show. She will
also be actively involved in
Season 2 judging a couple
of episodes and assisting in
mentoring the new batch
of young aspiring models.
She also intends to improve
her modelling talent, especially after discovering her
strengths and an interest in
high fashion editing.
As she pursues her modelling career, Lisa-Maree
looks up to famous international models Tyra Banks
and Miranda Kerr as her
inspiration. “Tyra is beautiful, strong and confident.
There was a time, she put
on weight and received
criticisms from people in
the industry. Her response
to them was simply she is
happy about herself and
that is what matters.” She
added she admires Miranda Kerr as she finds her “so
real, natural and genuine.”
As a model, Miss FASX
Australia 2014 Lisa-Maree
aspires to be the best model she can be – passionate,
natural and happy enjoying every moment of her
new adventure.

Manny Asuncion’s anthology
of plays to be launched
A collection of seven plays
written by Manny Asuncion
was compiled as a book titled
Seasons: An anthology of
Filipino-Australian plays
down under, and which will
be launched on 30 August,
1-4pm at 501 Reception, 501

compilation of his plays into
a book is a lifelong ambition
by the author. For him, it has
been long overdue.
The anthology features
plays written by Asuncion
and produced by Dulaang
Melbourne Inc. between 1990
and 2009. The plays depict
the dreams, ambitions, hopes
and aspirations of migrant
Filipinos in Australia (Winter’s Chill, Summer Butterflies). Some mirror the angst,
the pains, the happiness and
joy of every migrant Filipino
who tries to live in the land
down under (Kesehoda, Mga
Eksena sa Airport at Iba Pa).
Other plays try to delineate
the social and economic
issues faced by migrant Filipinos in Australia (Autumn
Sonata, Summer Butterflies,
Ikalawang Tag-Sibol ni Mang
Florante, Miting sa Makiling).

How to be a
master showman
I remember growing up
in the 1980s when I looked
forward to watching the
television show “That’s
Entertainment”. I remember one time my Granduncle Lolo Totoy came up
to me while watching the
show and expressed that
he knows the host German Moreno personally
and how they used to eat
lunch together while working as janitors at the old
Clover Theatre in Manila
when he was a young lad.
I remember hearing stories
about how Kuya Germs and
my Lolo Totoy would clean
and maintain the theatre.
He had a chance to watch
the “bodabil” actors perfect
their craft during rehearsals and during show time.
My Lolo Totoy ended up
leaving the Clover Theatre
for an office job with his
sister, my Lola Rosa at the
Manila City Hall, later raising a family of five chil-
dren with my Lola Naty.
Fast forward to 2014, I
believe that every story
has a moral; a lesson to be
taught that once applied
to our own lives, can reward us handsomely and
positively affect our future.
The great Canadian Philosopher Drake said in one of
his rap songs, “We started
from the bottom now we’re
here.” This is what Kuya
Germs did; he is now what
people in the Philippine
showbiz call “Haligi ng
Industriya”. He started as
a janitor, got the promotion
as a curtain raiser, became
a comedic stage actor and
later producer and talent
manager.
I have learned from Lolo
Totoy’s stories about his
time working with Kuya
Germs, you need to plant
yourself in the right environment where you want to
be a success. Kuya Germs
had the Clover Theatre and
utilised his time to learn
from the best entertainers,
hosts and modelled their
timing as well as adapting
their stage presentation
skills. His time there was
his apprenticeship, he paid
the price and now his success can allow him to relax
and get some shuteye if
he chooses to do so. The
focus here is to have the
hunger to succeed, work
hard and model from the
best, place yourself in the
right environment and finally don’t be afraid to start
from the bottom because
most of the people on the
penthouse all started on
the ground floor and some
even on the basement.
Until Next time, STAY
FOCUSED!

to do so. After all, he knows
and breathes hard work, commitment, and dedication.
Ramon spent a huge part of
his life in Baguio City, Philippines. But ever since, his
story seems to revolve around
meats. During his prime, he
already opened a butcher
shop. It was also his ticket
when he decided to migrate
to New Zealand.
Although he was entirely
new to a foreign culture, he
used his existing knowledge
and skill in the industry to
find work in different butcher
shops and Woolworths in
New Zealand, and this helped
him build the confidence to
open his own two years later.
Ten years after, however,
he was lured by the huge
opportunities and culture of
Australia that he eventually
brought his family from New
Zealand to Melbourne.
Running a Pinoy butcher
shop
While in Melbourne, he
discovered that there was
no butcher shop owned by
a Filipino, so armed with his
tenacity to succeed, he opened
RJ’s Butcher Shop.
Running RJ’s is not easy.
“The major challenge for
me when I first started this
business was adjusting to the
different cultures and having
to prove to the customers that
I can satisfy and serve them
to the best of my ability. I also
had to think of ways o that no
meat goes to waste and I don’t
end up out of pocket,” he told
The Philippine Times.
Receiving Melbourne’s 2014
Sausage King award
Ramon is a persistent
butcher and businessman.
With his son, from whom
he named his shop and who
also studied a butcher course
in William Angliss Institute,
helping him, he runs a customer-centric shop by meeting the demands of buyers
for a variety of great-quality
cut meats from chicken, beef,
pork, lamb and goat. He also
specialises in lechon (a special
roast pig delicacy popular
among Filipinos), as well as
sausages that won him first
place in Melbourne’s 2014
Sausage King competition
for the Traditional Australian
Pork Sausages category.
Today, Ramon continues to
reap excellent reviews from
customers and awards for his
shop. He attributes his success to patience, hard work,
understanding, knowledge,
skills, customer support, and
family. A religious man, he
also gives back all the glory
to God by serving as a Sariling
Tinig Filipino choir member
at St. Andrew’s Church in
Werribee and attending prayer
meetings under the Light of
Jesus Community. He does the
daily grind of business, family
and church with his loving
wife, Buena.
New branch in Werribee
Aside from this recent
award, Ramon has definitely
conquered this industry in
Ramon and Buena Tisico
Australia by having another
branch in Werribee. The shop
has an ample carpark to cater
to the needs of his growing
customers.
“Being a butcher and being
in the business has been running through the family’s generation. My plan for the future
is to establish and make this
business work for the future
of my children and grandchildren, as well as continue to
serve the Lord,” said Ramon
who always remembers to
give back all these blessings
to the community by doing
charitable works.”

Perdon: A man with a past
IT is said that one man’s
trash is another man’s treasure. This is so true for
author, historian, archivist,
Renato Perdon. What some
discard as old and torn documents, creased sepia photographs, Perdon delights in,
as treasures to keep.
To Renato Perdon, the
past is a whole new world
waiting to be unearthed,
discovered and understood.
It’s only a matter of time. He
exhumes the past with a passion and journeys through
the alleys of a bygone era,
disinterring declassified
documents, dusting old
books and magazines. Like
working on a giant puzzle,
he pieces the remnants of
the past to reveal a colorful
cultural patchwork, in the
hope of providing an insight
of today.
For anyone with an interest in history, he is a mine
of information on Philippine
history and culture. More
than just shooting out facts
and dates, his narratives of
Filipino ancestry are dished
out from a different perspective. Drawing parallels between yesterday and today,
he provides other possible
interpretations of the past, in
the hope of providing new
answers to the long-drawn
questions that have haunted
us as a people.
His books capture the very
essence of the people and the
times: “Brown Americans of
Asia”, “Kulturang Pilipino”
and “Footnotes in History”
provide readers with one
more viewpoint – the one
missed out in history books.
His book on Rizal, portrays
him “as simply an ordinary
man thrown into extraordinary circumstances.” It’s an
honest look at history with a
difference. It’s story telling
at its best. His autobiographical book “Life and Times of
the Perdon Family” focuses
on the Perdon ancestry and
highlights their highs and
lows in the Bicol region. His
latest book “Connecting Two
Cultures” takes a close look at
the fusion of Philippine and
Australian cultures.
His other books are for Filipinos and foreigners with special interest in the Philippines.
These language books – “Filipino Dictionary”, “Essential
Filipino Phrasebook”, “Moving
Out in Filipino” plus other
book on common phrases,
language workbooks – simply
reconnect us to our roots.
The importance of education was instilled in him by
his father, who conscientiously travelled the small
towns of Bicol to teach.
While he was driven originally by his ambition to be in
Foreign Service, fate stepped
in and he landed a job with
National Historical Commission of the Philippines.
Here he dedicated 20 years
of his professional life as a
historical translator and researcher, while also teaching
the subject at Lyceum. He
was also Special Assistant
to the Chairman of the National Historic Studies and
Cultural Heritage Consultant
for Presidential Commission
on Culture and the Arts.
He had the honour of
working and being mentored
by notable Filipino historians, it was inevitable that he
developed a profound interest in history. “I cannot forget the inspiration they have
given me,” says Perdon. His
impressive circle includes:
historian-priest, Fr. Horacio
de la Costa; art critic and
writer/editor Emilio Aguilar
Cruz; historian, Teodoro Agoncillo, medical doctor and
historian Domingo Avella;
academic and historian, Dr.
Serafin D. Quiason, Rizalist and historian, Professor
Esteban A. de Ocampo; and
writer, Carmen Guerero Nakpil and other private historians. Dr. Gregorio F. Zaide,
Marcelino Foronda, Celedonio Resurrecion, Diosdado
Capino, Sixto Orosa, Sr.
were in his correspondence
list too.
His first entry to Australia
was as a Colombo scholar.
He later migrated and found
employment as an archivist
with the City of Sydney
Archives, Sydney, Australia
where he stayed until his retirement. He is also a translator and language consultant
for the Community Relations
commission.
He holds an MA in Asian
Studies and a Graduate Diploma in Archives Administration (University of New
South Wales), a Postgraduate
Diploma in Museum Studies
(Sydney University), and
a Postgraduate Diploma in
Spanish Major (Colegio de
San Juan de Letran). He completed his undergraduate
studies (BA in Political Science and BS in Foreign Service) in the Philippines. He
has published articles and
books on history, cultural
conservation and heraldry,
both in the Philippines and
Australia.
While the old resonates
with him dearly, Renato
Perdon is very much attuned
with the new and the now.
Armed with his sense of
wit, he continues to traverse
through time, collecting and
archiving anything of interest, knowing that today too,
will one day be a generation’s past.
His books are now available on www.amazon.com.

ACFE certified as RTO by ASQA
A Filipino-owned international health care training
centre in Melbourne has
been certified as a registered
training organisation (RTO)
by the Australian Skills
Quality Authority (ASQA).
The ASQA accreditation
of the Australian Centre of
Further Education (ACFE)
Pty Ltd is a first for a health
care training college headed
by a Filipino.
Equally important, ACFE
was also granted formal
recognition recently by the
Commonwealth Register of
Institutions and Courses for
Overseas Students (CRICOS).
As a CRICOS provider,
ACFE can now deliver courses and training to overseas
students, particularly those
under the Commonwealth
Student Visa 572 program.
ACFE has been accredited for two courses namely,
Certificate III in Aged Care
and Advanced Diploma of
Nursing. Students completing these courses can be
issued with an Australian
Qualification Framework
qualifications or statements
of attainments.
Raul Hernandez, CEO
of ACFE, said recognitions
from both the ASQA and
GLIT
and
CRICOS is a testimony to the
centre’s continuing efforts
to deliver quality training.
ACFE was established in
2009.
ACFE has provided traineeships to overseas nurses
from at least eight countries,
including the Philippines,
India and China. Many of
ACFE graduates have been
gainfully employed in Australian health institutions
under the Australian Nursing
and Midwifery Accreditation
Council (ANMAC) Accredited Course, IRON (Initial
Registration for Overseas
Nurses) Program.
GLAM
Three cheers for the lady
It was an unexpected fun
and laughter night on the
12th of April 2014 when
Nida Alico Schofield, Vice
Chairperson of the Filipiino
Communities Council of
Victoria Inc (FCCVI), held
her 60th Birthday party at
501 Reception. Many came
from the eastern side of
Melbourne and also from as
far as Geelong, her friends
were there, ardently enjoying the evening. The new
dance group of FCCVI and
PAFI officers and friends
performed a classic Royal
Waltz choreographed by Julie Uy. Friends were called
on the spot to sing funny
rendition of “That’s What
Friends Are For”. It was a
great night of love and surprise for the birthday Lady.
