FRIDAY JUNE 8, 2012 11:00 am – 11:45 am - Chicago Kingsnakes. Chicago Kingsnakes are a rockin’ blues band that was chosen to kick-off the “Street Stage” at our fest this year because of the quality of their performances over many years at the clubs in the south and west suburbs, and at several Windy City Blues Society events, including our first “Blues Meet Up” event a few years back at Harlem Avenue Lounge, along with our Windy City Blues Challenge Band event in past years. A time-tested tight band that simply loves to play the blues. Noon – 12:45 pm - Steepwater Band Steepwater Band has grown in popularity, even since their appearance on our stage last year, and the hard work that they have put in grinding out their heavy mix of “hard blues with a county/rock twist” continues to pay dividends for the band. During their appearance in Memphis for the IBC’s they announced an expansion from their trio make-up to a four piece band, and they’re even more dynamic at their live shows and on CD. They frequently tour Europe, but are regulars at some of the non-tradition blues venues from Chicago to Northern Indiana. 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm - “Chicago Delta”: Mississippi Gabe Carter then Black Oil Brothers “Chicago Delta” is a concept that showcases musicians based here in Chicago, but that play music deep from the delta, especially leaning toward Hill Country and Bentonia-style. Mississippi Gabe Carter starts the long set off with his one-man show, and his sound is so rich and hypnotizing that you don’t miss a backing band. He’s a combination of Skip James and Junior Kimbrough, but has a unique drone sound all his own. Part two is the Black Oil Brothers- watch out as they are not for the meek at heart, and their show promises to be a wild ride down to the depths of Mississippi’s Hill Country. One of the more talented younger bands that can be found hiding out at some of the more edgy clubs in the city. 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm - Cash Box Kings Cash Box Kings are a conglomerate of some of the best known Chicago blues musicians, with an occasional rotating band member. Core of the band can include Kenny “Beedy Eyes” Smith, Barrelhouse Chuck, 5:15 pm – 6:00 pm - Earwig Music Review: Rob Stone & the CNotes With Willie “the Touch” Hayes on drums, Ariyo on keys and Mark Wydra on guitar. Rob’s true-to-Chicago Blues Harmonica style is passionate and heartfelt, and he’s one of the best Chicago harp players that gladly honors the Chicago blues tradition. For this show he’s bringing in a contingent of respected local Chicago blues musicians. WINDY CITY BLUES SOCIETY The Windy City Blues Society seeks to preserve, promote, and enhance blues music and the blues community; support blues education and promote the Chicago area blues scene especially blues musicians. Steve’s returning from his now Florida home for this fest event and his many local fans are looking forward to a rare Chicago appearance, and Quique is a well-respected blues harpist from Spain. Worry not if you see a Rooster crowing…it probably won’t bite. See you at our stage! …BlackJack PAGE 2 Windy City Blues News WCBS STREET STAGE LINEUP! SATURDAY JUNE 9, 2012 11:00am – 11:45am - Fernando Jones presents “Blues Kids of America” w/ guests Ray Goren & Alex Lund Fernando is one of the friendliest, more popular blues figures in Chicago, and his Blues Summer Camps along with his Chicago Festival appearances are always a treat to the senses, both on the ears and the eyes, as Fernando is always decked out in a brightly colored suit. Fernando’s youthful guest musicians are sure to be a hit this year, as always. After Hours Shows THU JUN 7 S.P.A.C.E. (Evanston) Harry Garner Band, 8pm. Charlie Musselwhite, 9pm Smoke Daddy Nick Moss B.L.U.E.S. Taildragger w/ Bob Corritore Blue Chicago Shirley Johnson Noon – 12:50 pm - Big DooWopper There’s no way to describe the DooWopper, but he’s somewhere a mix between Ray Charles and your local Sunday southside church organist, and he has more character on one key they others have on their whole keyboard. A rare appearance outside of church, it’ll be a treat to catch his performance at this year’s fest. Harlem Ave. (Berwyn) Open Mic Blues Jam, 8:30 p.m. 1:10 pm – 2:10 pm - Sam Lay joins Bob Riedy and Bob Corritore Sam, Bob and Bob return to their regular Chicago haunt for the fest, seemingly every year lately. Sam Lay is one of the few legends left that rightfully can be be called such, and the two Bob’s join in as a nice trio that will command the stage and the town during fest weekend. Reggie's Chris Tiritilli, 8 p.m. 2:30 pm – 3:45 pm - Omar Coleman & Friends: Kenny Smith, Bob Stroger & Billy Flynn Omar invites a fine grouping of the best of the best in Chicago blues. If you don’t know Kenny, Bob and Billy you don’t hang around the Chicago blues scene much, and this will undoubtedly be one of the highlighted shows of the fest. Kingston Mines Studebaker John, Joanna Connor 4:00 pm – 5:15 pm - Harmonica Blowout hosted by Harry Garner Band Harry and a solid backing band host another highlight of this year’s fest, sure to be talked about when all is said and done. They’ll be not 5, not 6, not 7 harpists (but more?) on stage throughout the show, and plan to be riveted by Harry’s sincere love for the blues coupled with many fine local guest harmonica players, and who knows who might join in for a song or two! 5:30 pm – 6:10 pm - Nigel Mack Band A somewhat hidden fact is that Nigel is one of the best old-style delta blues players around, which he displays during his solo shows, and he brings an even more dynamic and heavy sound with an extensive band to our stage. Nigel fell in love with Chicago following his move her from Canada many years ago, and he has not disappointed his fans. Nigel’s a solid songwriter, and a true lover and friend of the blues- selected for our stage as the winner of the recent Windy City Blues Society “Best New Self-produced CD” contest. 6:25 – 7:05 pm - Geneva Red’s “Original Delta Fireballs” Geneva’s the best “under-the-radar over-the-border” blues harmonica singer around, and she brings her “Original Delta Fireballs” to our stage from over the border in southern Wisconsin. Known as one of the best harp players around, male or female, she doesn’t get enough attention or play in the Chicago blues circuit. Joined by Jackie Five and Dime on Drums, this will be a fun way to finish off Day Two at the Street Stage. Rosa's Blues Jam hosted by James Wheeler House of Blues (Back Porch Stage) Doktu Rhute, 6:30pm. SUNDAY JUNE 10, 2012 11:00 am – 11:45 am - Moonlighters with Butt Naked Sam Pure naked southwest-side blues. See it, feel it, hear it. Eat it up as a “kick off your shoes” primer to the blues challenge that follows! I don’t wanna know anything- I just wanna see it! Noon - 3:50 pm - Five bands compete in ROUND 1 of Windy City Blues Society’s Annual “Chicago Blues Challenge” 4:10 pm – 5:00 pm - Pistol Pete Band Pistol Pete Band won our Windy City Chicago Blues Challenge “Band Category” this past year and they subsequently competed in Memphis at the IBC’s, representing Chicago with a semifinal appearance. Pete’s a fine and eccentric player, enjoyed by many throughout the city during his many club shows, and we’re glad to have Pete and his band on our stage representing the truth in today’s Chicago Blues. 5:15 pm – 6:00 pm - Kilborn Alley Blues Band with special guest Deak Harp Kilborn Alley has been one of the most popular bands to play our fest stage in the past, and rightfully so. A fine young trio of Central Illinois musicians that will be joined by popular and former member Deak Harp, especially for this show. Kilborn Alley is one band moving up the charts rapidly. See them now so you can say you were there when they started to takeoff. 6:15 pm – 7:00 pm - Liz Mandeville & Donna Herula Duo A fine and fun way to end our day and our fest. Liz and Donna have only recently paired up within the last year or so, but they each bring an incredible history of talent and enthusiasm to our stage. The duet won our Windy City Blues Society Chicago Blues Challenge Solo/Duo contest this year and then went to Memphis for the International Blues Challenge where they had a nice semi-final finish. This may be the best fun you’ll have at the fest all weekend, so come on out and enjoy a smile, some laughs and some great music. It is 12 musical selections and Mud’s 3rd CD. This is his first with Severn Records and first produced by Bob Corritore. This is truly Mud Morganfield at his very best. This CD has not been more than 2 or 3 feet from a CD player since I’ve had it. In my opinion it is right up there with some of his fathers work. Rick Kreher & Billy Flynn are the guitarists, you can’t get much better than that. Barrelhouse Chuck is on Piano and the Organ, he is a real highlight of the collection. The rhythm section is made up of Kenny “Beedy Eyes” Smith on drums and E.G. McDaniels on the bass. They work so well together. Bob Corritore and Harmonica Hinds split the harmonica duties. Mud’s vocals and song writing talent are at the best they have ever been. There are so many very good individual songs on this collection. This CD should get plenty of listening time, you might want to pick up 2 copies. fantastic song and one of my favorites of the collection. “Health” is a message song, Mud shows his love for the listener by telling us all to take care of ourselves. . “Loco Motor” is a great traveling song, a nice shuffle. It gives me happy feet, makes you want to dance. Harmonica Hinds plays some excellent harp and I get a Pinetop Perkins feel from the keyboards. This song will make you happy and will heal what ails you. “Money (Can’t buy everything)” is another favorite, it has a real Memphis sound to it. Mud tells a great parable in this song, he keeps you waiting for more of the story then lays it on you. It is a bit of a talking song as he chats with his guitarist. “Midnight Lover”, a song of betrayal between lovers and another man. “Go Ahead and Blame Me” “Leave Me Alone”, is another catchy song. It shows Mud’s classiness when dealing with lost loves. Rather than resorting to tactics of lesser men, Mud just tells the woman to leave him alone. “You Can’t Lose What You Ain’t Never Had” “Blues In My Shoes” is a sharp little west side Chicago blues tune that talks about Muds life in the blues. It tells you a little bit about his surroundings and growing up. It tells you a bit about how he got his blues. The CD starts out with “Short Dress Woman”. It has you jumping right to the dance floor with Kenny “Beedy Eyes” Smith providing the beat and Barrelhouse Chuck swinging you around with his fantastic work on the keyboards. Both are magical throughout the entire collection. This CD in its entirety leaves me feeling very good. The music and the performances are top notch. The songs are well written. There seems to be a positive vibe with this entire collection, it sends positive messages. “Son of the Seventh Son” is the title song and it does not mess around. You can tell right away this is some gut bucket blues. The bass guides you through the dark and evil side of the blues. It is a haunting tune, with some nice keyboards and harmonica. This one hurts good. BECOME A MEMBER! “Love to Flirt” has a Sunnyland Slim sound to it. It’s a quick little ditty about a girl that just can’t help her flirting ways. She is so bad that when taken to the preacher for counseling the preacher says, “I can’t help, She’s been flirting with me to”. “Catfishing” has a great sound, real groovy and slightly hypnotic. It is a song about a fella looking to catch himself one of the best women in the pond. The symbolism could make you blush, or get you looking for some “stink bait” of your own to catch you a good catfish.
