Superintendent’s Message
Committed To Our Children
Dear Oregon/Jerusalem
Township Residents,
Presenting the check to principal
Amy Molnar is Asst. Fire Chief
Mark Mullins.
Congratulations to Amy Molnar
and the entire Coy Elementary School
family for winning the 2014 Oregon/
Jerusalem Great Escape. This program, which is sponsored by the Oregon and Jerusalem Twp. Fire Prevention Bureaus, involves the elementary
schools of both the Oregon City and
St. Kateri systems. The school with
the highest percentage of student participation receives a cash prize. This
year the prize amounted to $500.00.
The students take home a flyer
with the instructions to enlist their
families to draw a sketch of their
home showing two ways out of every room and out of the building.
This helps to form a pre-fire plan
for their home, and prompts them
to practice that plan. They return
it to the school for tallying, and the
plan is then sent back to the students’ homes for future reference.
Coy Elementary School wins
again for an unprecedented 5th year,
with an incredible 91% participation.
Kudos to all of those students and
families from all of the schools
who took the time to work with
this potentially life saving plan.

This past November, voters turned
down our request for an emergency 5.9
mill-operating levy. While this was disappointing, I fully understand the financial
difficulties many are having within our
community. Our schools will continue to
do the best we can to provide our young
people with the best educational experience possible. As funding sources continue to decline, we remain committed to
look for other ways to control costs and
reduce expenditures.
I have recently discovered a book entitled, “Our Public Schools: Their Teachers, Pupils, and Patrons.” This book was
written in 1918, by author Oscar T. Corson. I was curious to see what the major
issues were and if there are any similarities between then and now. Much to my
surprise, many of the issues discussed are
the exact hot button issues we are facing
today—topics such as teacher evaluation,
testing, school funding, and politics were
all mentioned. If I had not taken the time
to look at the
copyright date,
it would have
been very difficult to determine
when this book
was written. The
same arguments
for and against
public
schools
existed
back
then, as they do
today. However,
Dr. Lonny J. Rivera
one very imporSuperintendent
tant
paragraph
stuck out to me. I feel compelled to share
this excerpt with the Oregon community.
I will not attempt to paraphrase it; what is
written below is exactly as it appears in
the text:
“The free Public School System of
the United States represents the Nation’s most serious attempt to make
valid the fundamental statement in
the Declaration of Independence that
all men are created equal and are en-
dowed by their Creator with certain
inalienable rights which include life,
liberty, and the pursuit of happiness;
for the public school is the one place in
all the world where there is guaranteed
absolute equality of educational opportunity to all, where wealth and ancestry,
in and of themselves, count for nothing,
and where brains and character and industry are certain to win the recognition
they merit.”
This statement has significant meaning for me, as the public school system
has made a real difference in my life. As
many in our society are unable to afford a
private education, the public school system has afforded opportunities to countless young people, and has served as a
mechanism for those not from “wealth
and ancestry” to gain access to a bright
and prosperous future.
The Oregon
City School District gladly receives each
child who walks through our doors. We
are committed to do whatever it takes to
make each child a success.
A Winning Tradition
Twenty-four members of the Clay
High School DECA Chapter travelled to
The University of Findlay on September
29, to participate in their first competition
of the year: I.A. Competition. Seven area
schools, including Findlay Millstream,
Fostoria, Napoleon, Port Clinton, Vanguard Tech Center, and Whitmer competed in various areas such as Team Management Decision Making, Job Interview,
Parliamentary Law, and Public Relations.
Clay DECA’s hard work paid off, as twenty-three students brought home trophies,
including eighteen first place trophies.
“I thought it was a good experience
for us to see how actual competition is
like and how to present in front of judges,
but the best part was coming home with
all the trophies, ” DECA Member Alyssa
Heck said. DECA members placed in the
following areas:
First place:
Job Interview, Blue Division –
Megan Upham
Job Interview, White Division –
Mackenzie Wells
Parliamentarian – Nathan Beckman

entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools
and colleges around the globe. It is a
component of the Marketing Education
Program at Clay High School for seniors
interested in careers in the business industry.
Students Get Moving With BOKS!
Every adult who has participated in
any early morning exercise knows the
value of revving that physical engine in
the morning. A little AM activity wakes
the body and the mind, and can help
prepare us for the day ahead. With this
knowledge in mind, Reebok developed
the BOKS initiative (Build Our Kids’ Success).
BOKS is a free, before school physical activity program designed to get kids
moving in the morning, preparing them
for a successful day of learning. BOKS’
goals are to “begin the morning with ac-
tive play, increase opportunities for kids
to be active and gain life-long nutritional
knowledge, and empower communities
to collaborate and make a positive difference in children’s lives.”
The BOKS program educates its participants, explaining why certain exercises are beneficial and what body parts
they affect. With the startling fact that
childhood obesity has more than doubled
in children in the last thirty years, it is
important that our children learn to put
down their electronic devices and head
outdoors. When they reach for a snack,
BOKS teaches them to make healthy
choices, asking “Can you run it under water?” (like fruits, vegetables, and boiled
eggs).
The Coy Elementary BOKS program
takes place on Tuesday mornings from
8:20 to 8:50, and currently services kindergarten through grade two students.
Ram Fitness Club coordinator, Dayre
Carpenter, is teaming up with volunteer
members of the Kiwanis East Toledo-Oregon to supervise and lead the activities.

from Terra and a Bachelor of Science from
BGSU. He enjoys water sports and activities including boating, fishing, skiing, and
just being outdoors.
Paul Genzman
Having grown up in Toledo, I recently moved back to the area with my wife
and four boys. I have taught science for
20 years. In that time I have taught in 6
schools, 4 districts, and 3 countries. In
addition, I have instructed over a dozen
different science courses to students ranging from 7th Grade to college level. These
experiences have enabled me to quickly
realize what an exceptional school district I have now been welcomed into. After just a few weeks at Clay High School,
I cannot express enough how excited I am
about working with such a professional
staff and engaged students.
Michael Hyttenhove
I graduated Bowling Green State University in 2012. During the 2011 – 2012
school year, I completed my methods
and student teaching here at Clay High
School. Two years later, I began working
at Fassett Junior High as the math intervention teacher. After one year there, I
had the opportunity to move to the high
school to teach geometry. It has been a
great start to the school year, and I am
looking forward to what the remainder of
the year will bring.
Jolene Kopena
Jolene Kopena lives in Curtice, and
is married to her husband, Jerry. They
have twin boys, Jeremy and Joshua, who
attend Owens Community College. She
has a Bachehlor and Masters degree in
Spanish from the University of Toledo.
She enjoys scrapbooking and traveling.
She has taught previously at Continental
High School, Genoa High School, and the
University of Toledo.
Frances Sawyer
I have always been interested in the
field of Cosmetology; going through high
school coloring and cutting my own hair,
as well my friends’ hair. However, when
I graduated high school, I went straight
to college to study journalism. Two years
into college, I decided to attend beauty
school as well. After graduating beauty
school, I began my cosmetology career
at David Broadway Salon and Spa. A
few years into that, I went back to school
while working part time at the salon, and
eventually received my bachelor’s degree
in Education. I have worked in the Cosmetology field for 14 years now, and I’ve
enjoyed every minute of it. I’m very excited to share my knowledge and experience with future generations, specifically
at my alma mater.
Thom Sneed
Thom Sneed joins the staff of Oregon
City Schools as the new vocal music director at Clay and Fassett. He has over
twenty-five years’ experience as a professional vocalist, choral director, private
voice coach, and church music director. As a tenor soloist, Thom continues
to perform across the area in opera, musical theatre, oratorios and concerts. Thom
and his wife, Robin, are proud parents of
two current Clay students and one graduate (class of 2012). Thom’s passion is to
help students engage the arts at a deeply
enriching level, facilitating life education
through music education.
Ashley Stoneking
My name is Ashley Stoneking. I am
from and currently live in Maumee, OH.
I am a recent graduate of BGSU where I
studied math and special education. This
is my first year teaching, and I teach Algebra 2 and Geometry here at Clay High
School. Some fun facts about me are that
I love to play video games, read all sorts
of books, and I am getting married in two
months to my high school sweetheart.
Alex Timofeev
I am an Oregon native and graduate from Clay in 2007. I have studied at
Defiance College for my undergraduate
in Business Administration and Concentrate in Marketing. I also played 4 years
of competitive baseball there. Then I furthered my education at Bowling Green
State University for my Masters in Business Education.
This past school year, I was a substitute in Oregon City School District for
grades K-12. It was an experience that assured me this field is my passion and I am
glad to start my career off in Oregon.
Zebulun Waterbury
Zebulun Waterbury grew up in Blissfield, MI, and graduated from Blissfield
High School in 2000. He graduated from
Huntington University (Huntington, IN)
in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science in
English Education. In 2008, he and his
wife volunteered with the U.S. Peace
Corps and taught at a high school in ru-
ral Malawi, Africa. Most recently, he has
been teaching in Grants, NM. He and his
wife are looking forward to being closer to
home and family. They are excited about
joining the Oregon City Schools community, and look forward to helping students
prepare for life beyond high school.

enjoys shopping and spending time with
family and friends. One of her favorite
vacation destinations is Disney World.
Pink Eagle Spirit
The t-shirt logo for the event.
During spirit week at Fassett Junior
High School our staff and students wanted to show how our spirit extends beyond
our school walls. Students and parents
were admitted to the Wednesday night
Fassett goes Pink
football game by donating canned goods.
Thursday was our “Pink It” day and students shared their spirit by donating a
dollar for the privilege of dressing comfortably, and by purchasing a Pink Eagle
Spirit T-shirt. Proceeds from the dollars
collected and money raised from t-shirts
sales will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. We are excited to share
that we raised over $1,000. We hope oth-
ers catch some of our spirit and share in
our enthusiasm of supporting each other,
our school, and our community.

There was a lot to be wild about during the author visit at Coy Elementary in
October. Students were not only treated to
a visit by the writer of the Secret Zoo book
series, but they also met several residents
of the Toledo Zoo, up close and personal.
Bryan Chick, author of The Secret
Zoo series, shared his story of becoming
a writer. He encouraged the children to
explore writing, telling them that the idea
for the books had occurred to him when
he was only nine-years old. Chick also
shared that his inspiration to write his
award-winning book series came after
visiting a number of zoos, including the
Toledo Zoo.
After Chick’s presentation, two staff
members from the Toledo Zoo introduced
the student body to three of their wild
friends – a tortoise, a hedgehog and a
large, lively lizard. The zoo staffers carried the “wild” visitors around the auditorium so every student could get a close
look at them. Most students thought the
best part was the opportunity to briefly
and carefully pet one of the zoo visitors
(all under the watchful eyes of the zoo
staffers). It was an experience the children are not likely to forget. Our thanks
go out to the Toledo Zoo and Bryan Chick
for a “wild” afternoon of fun and learning.

In celebration of National Bullying
Prevention month, we at Jerusalem Elementary have been celebrating in various
ways!
1. We celebrated UNITY DAY on Wednesday OCTOBER 22. Unity day is a day
where students, staff, and community
members all across the United States
wore ORANGE to show that we unite together to stand up against bullying.
poster contest that all students could
enter in order to show their knowledge
about standing up against bullying and
being a bucket filling, bully free school.
We had more than 60 entries! Our winners of the poster contest by grade included: Kindergarten: Kyla McDonald, 1st
grade: Rebekah Center, 2nd grade: Brian
Henneman, 3rd grade: Olivia Batch, and
4th grade: Sydney Miller.
3. School-wide this month we read the
Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin
by Joe Troiano and discussed how every
pumpkin is different, just like people
are different, and that we should respect
and appreciate the differences. Thanks to
funds provided by the Jerusalem Parents
Group, we followed up our Spookley lesson with a little arts and crafts.
2. We also had a bullying prevention
Starr Celebrates Bullying Prevention Month
Students display their unique and different pumpkins that
they painted.
During the month of October, students at Starr School practiced how to handle mean behavior and learned, “When we
all stand together, no one stands alone.” On national “Wear
Orange Day,” students and staff wore orange to send the message that we will stand up for others. Students learned that
when they help others and stick together, everyone feels included and safe. Students also signed a “Kindness Pledge” and
read the book, Spookley the Square Pumpkin, a story about a
pumpkin who is teased about being different. At the end of the
month, each student had the opportunity to paint his or her
own unique pumpkin to recognize and celebrate our differences!

The seventh grade GT students have
been journeying on Titanic this fall.
While reading A Night to Remember, the
students created a historically accurate
newspaper with news articles, editorials,
feature writing and advertisements. They
also traced the experience of one crew
member or passenger. Theo Miller, traced
the experience of Captain Smith, who led
the Titanic crew. At the end of the book,
the students presented information they
learned about their passengers and crew
members both from the book and outside
resources.
The eighth grade GT students read
Seven Habits of Highly Effective Students. Each student was assigned a habit
to learn well enough to teach it to his/her
classmates. For the fifth habit, “Seek first
to understand, then to be understood,”
Haley Lott, and Manon Slaughterbeck
had the students play the old-fashioned
game of telephone. The students also
paired up to draw something not by seeing it, but by using another student’s oral
description. The students learned that
understanding communication is critical to understanding others. For the sixth
habit, “Syngergize”, Macie Grimes, Luke
Roach, and Audrey Wilbarger, put the
students into teams. Each team had a
member who was blindfolded and listening to another member describe a poster.
The blindfolded member had to return to
the classroom to describe what the artist
should draw. All of the team members
had to depend on one another and work
together to achieve their goal.

filled the Brandville Museum complex.
Children were shaved in the old barber
shop by barber Mr. Van Etten. Mary Todd
Lincoln (Mrs. Betty Metz) shared her life
as President Lincoln’s wife. She told how
her son, Taddy, received his nickname.
An Ohio president’s largest bathtub picture was discovered as the campers gathered facts about Ohio’s eight presidents.
Camp leaders helped the children cook
Johnny cakes for snack, touch a homemade glacier, and build a wooden tool
box. Here is a journal entry from one
child’s daily entry.
Day 2-Trades and Crafts
Today is June 18, 2014
Today I learned what trades are, and
I did lots of crafts! For a snack, I made
Johnny cakes. Johnny cakes are like a
pancake but more yellow. It didn’t really
taste good. When we went to a place that
looked like a barber shop, a boy named
Nick got shaving cream on his face. We
learned how to make a tool box. We all
made one and, Man! Was it fun! I made
some new friends whose names are Ava,
Grace, and Jamie.

Agronomy Excellence
Thirteen Clay High School Environmental & Agricultural Technologies students earned FIRST PLACE TEAM in the
District One FFA Agronomy Career Development Event held recently near Tinora High School, in Defiance County. Students from ten schools representing seven
northwest Ohio counties participated in
this competition. Clay High School Environmental & Agricultural Technologies students have a strong tradition of
winning this competition, earning first
place team for nineteen of the past twenty
years!
Students were tested on their ability
to identify the plants and seeds of over 40
crops, vegetables, and weeds common to
Ohio, as well as insects, damage caused
by insects, and diseases of plants. Students were also tested on their knowledge
of soil conservation, plant fertility, insect
and disease control, and pesticide use.
Finally they completed a team activity
which included determining plant variety
selection and fertilizer needs, interpreting soil test results, selecting appropriate
pesticides, and determining expenses, returns, and potential profit associated with
growing a specific crop grown at a given
location. The Clay High School students
placing in the top ten in this competition
were:
Nick LaRue was FIRST Place Individual,
Tim Riley - SECOND Place, Amanda Morris - THIRD Place, Max Venia - FIFTH

the knowledge they learned during class
and after-school practices to prepare for
the competition, and to prepare for college and careers relating to botany, turf
management, landscaping, entomology,
soil science, conservation, pesticide application, environmental sciences, and
wildlife management.
$500 Grant
Stephanie Bianchi, eighth grade
science teacher at Fassett Junior High
School, and Nancy Pevets, seventh grade
science teacher, were recently awarded a
FirstEnergy STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Math)
Classroom grant in the amount of $500,
which will allow the teachers to purchase
electricity usage monitors, infrared thermometers, and other equipment to allow
students to investigate energy usage at
Fassett Junior High.
These investigations will support
Ohio Science Standards for the study of
energy forms, energy transfer and energy transformations. The teachers, along
with Kelly Proestos, long-term substitute
for Ed Bartek, have planned for their students to conduct an energy audit of our
school, to develop a plan to increase energy savings, and to present their plans to
district leaders.
On Monday, October 20, Ms. Bianchi
and Mrs. Pevets also attended FirstEner-
gy’s Teach the Teachers program at Davis
Besse Nuclear Power Plant, and received
many ideas for investigating energy usage, as well as the resources and materials
needed for implementing these lessons.
We are grateful to community partners
such as FirstEnergy for their support and
willingness to invest in our students.

The students in the Environmental
Science classes, under the guidance of
their instructor, Mr. Paul Genzman, volunteered their time early on a Saturday
morning to clean up litter from the ditch
at Stadium and Corduroy. They collected
10 full bags of garbage, a tire, and a scooter. They were part of 1,072 volunteers
who collected over 16,000 lbs of garbage
from 61 river sites in NW Ohio for “Clean
Your Streams,” on September 20.
These students have also combined
with the MH (multiple handicapped)
class directed by Ms. Sheryl Koepf, and
Mr. Gary Isbell, to collect recycling weekly. To date, we have collected well over 1
ton of paper, plastic, cans, and glass.
The Environmental Science classes
are very busy with other projects, as well. Some of the highlights are:
-A battery recycling program (just household batteries, please). Batteries may be
delivered to room 205.
-Participation with other area high
schools in “Student Watershed Watch”
over the next several weeks. -Monitoring the impacts of our windmill
on campus with migrating bird populations (using RADAR). The class plans to
present this data at the University of Toledo SATELLITES conference this spring.
Make sure to check out the
honor rolls on pages 10 & 11.
As high school upper classmen
make plans for life after graduation,
many families are thinking about
the ACT, a college admissions test
administered to over one million
students annually. The ACT is accepted by every college in the country as evidence of a student’s ability
to be successful in post secondary
education. With such great variance
among curricula, rigor, and grading
practices across the country, colleges
are increasingly relying on the ACT
to evaluate students for acceptance
and scholarship money.
With so much on the line, it is
no wonder that the ACT creates anxiety among students and the reason
why many families are willing to pay
thousands of dollars for their aspiring scholar to take ACT preparatory
classes. While the investment seems
high, the payoff can be even greater.
An increase of just a few points can
mean tens of thousands of dollars in
additional college scholarship money.
While most families take a more
conservative approach to the ACT,
the absolute best way to prepare for
the test is for students to be taking
rigorous course work while in high
school. At Clay, our many offerings
in honors and AP level classes translate into thousands of dollars in private ACT preparatory class tuition.
In addition to students taking
rigorous coursework while in high
school, Clay partners with Owens
Community College to offer discounted ACT preparatory classes
in the evenings. These classes are
held right on the Clay campus. Be
sure to watch for details of upcoming
classes in the Principal’s Email Blast,
Clay Facebook page, and @ClayHS on
Twitter.
If you are looking for a free way
to prepare for the ACT right at home,
a committee of Clay staff has evaluated a number of ACT resources and
has endorsed a program developed
by the United States Army that has an
ACT prep component. The program
may be found at www.march2success.com and may assist students in
a better understanding of the format,
timing, and content covered on the
ACT.
When students are ready to take
the ACT, all registrations are done
online at www.actstudent.org/start.
If you have any additional questions,

Watch Out For The Eagle Plow
Top: Mrs. Walsh, Bree King, Bailee Pasztor, Pedro Ortega, Jeff Fouke, and
Kealy Minchella. Right: This masterpiece will compete against other ODOT
plows around the state.
Mrs. Walsh and a few of our art students decorated an Ohio Department of
Transportation snow plow for a truck
housed at the Northwood Station. The
plow will be entered in the District 2
ODOT competition. District 2 is comprised of five counties from around the
area. Good luck to our students, and
keep an eye open for our Eagle “plowing”
snow this winter. Banners Flying High
The Clay High Alumni & Friends
Association, the Clay Athletic Boosters
Club, the Oregon School District, the City
of Oregon Council, and Administration,
the City of Oregon Maintenance Department and the Jerusalem Township Main-
tenance Department, have joined forces
on the “WELCOME TO EAGLE COUNTRY” banner project. These lovely banners are hanging throughout the city, and
township, to promote pride, and tradition
in our community. Move Over Picasso!
Left: Examples of student's "Monster Art." Right: Some students used pumpkins to create their "Monster Art."
The Ram Art Club is off to a great
start. A new addition to Coy Elementary’s
before and after school programs, the art
club, gives children the chance to explore
different illustrators and artists, and to
learn about the different artistic styles
and techniques they use. Children then
try their hand at creating their own artistic masterpieces.
The club meets Wednesdays after
school, from 3:35-4:45, and is led by Coy
Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Helena Day.
Grades 1-4 will get a chance to participate during different sessions throughout
the school year. Each session includes a
short lesson, and then the students work
on a “make and take” project, as well as a
more involved art project. In the month of October, Coy fourth
graders explored and created MONSTER
art. They looked at illustrations from
various children’s books, such as Maurice
Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are, and
Ed Emberly’s, GO AWAY BIG GREEN
MONSTER. The students then created
pumpkin monsters, blow art monsters,
name monsters, and coffee filter print

monsters. “The students really seem to
enjoy the chance to be artistic, and it is
nice to have an outlet that allows them to
express themselves and to explore their
creative side. I feel strongly that art needs
to be a part of our education system, and
that is why I took on this venture,” Mrs.
Day said. 9
Fuel Up To Play
Left: Dave Conley, Coy PE Instructor, and Dayre Carpenter, Ram
Fit Club Advisor, represented Coy Elementary at the NFL's "Fuel Up
To Play 60" initiative in Cleveland.
Dave Conley, Coy PE instructor,
and Dayre Carpenter, Ram Fit Club Advisor, represented Coy Elementary at
the NFL’s “Fuel Up to Play 60” initiative in Cleveland on Tuesday, October
21st. The training was held at First En-
ergy Stadium, home of the Cleveland
Browns. The purpose of the program is
to help kids become more successful in
school by teaching them the importance
of healthy nutrition, and how to exercise correctly.
During the session, the ³Fuel Up to
Play 60² curriculum was discussed. The
session provided success stories of how
the program has been implemented in
other districts. One major focus was the
importance of
eating a healthy breakfast every day, and
the positive effects doing so can have
on a student’s learning throughout the
school day. Please visit the following
website to learn more: fueluptoplay60.

Far Left: Students suit up for
the day's activities.
Near Left: Students participated
in various environmental hazard
activities.
Several Clay High gifted & talented students traveled to the University of Findlay to investigate a
possible career in Environmental,
Safety, and Occupational Health. The students were able to suit up
and experience multiple types of
hazard training modules at the
ESOH center, as well as personally working with Dr. Tim Murphy, Chair of the Environmental
program. There are 100,000 high
paying jobs available nationwide
in this field. Jerusalem
Summer Reading Club
All-State
Children's Chorus
Superintendant Dr. Lonny Rivera and music teacher Megan Link stand with
All-State Children's Chorus members Gilberto DeLuna and Lauren Susor.
Students spent time this summer in preparation for the Fall OAA Reading Test.
No S'more Worries. Pictured L-R: Emily Maix, Cole Havener, Drake Sekinger,
Alex Briceno, Petra Carmona, and Ivy Mullins.
Twelve students met for 6 weeks (18
hours) over the summer to sharpen their
reading skills, and to prepare for the October 7th OAA Reading test. The program
included weekly skills, such as, main
idea, fact and opinion, and cause and ef-
fect. Students also learned testing tips
and received a take home prize as a reminder. The program ended with a practice OAA and a healthy breakfast party.
This program was run by Ms. Whitney
Olinger, and Mrs. Lisa Kellar.
Last spring, Starr Elementary students, Gilberto DeLuna and Lauren
Susor, auditioned for the first ever AllState Children’s Chorus. The students
competed with children from all over
the state in grades 3 and 4 to receive a
spot in the 100 member honors choir.
This summer, both Gilberto and Lauren
were invited to be a part of this elite
group. They traveled to regional rehearsals and then performed with the
All-State ensemble on October 18th at
Capital University. This was a highly
competitive audition process with hundreds of applicants. Please join me in
congratulating these exceptional music
students.
