Marriage & Civil Ceremonies in Devon
Introduction
“True love is a
durable fire, in the
mind ever burning,
never sick, never old,
never dead, from itself
never turning”
- Sir Walter Raleigh

attracts large numbers of visitors
every year. It is no surprise that
more and more couples are
choosing to come here to “tie
the knot”.This booklet will give
you information about the
choices you have, how to arrange
your ceremony, and provides a list

Please be sure to read this
booklet thoroughly - everything
you need to know to ensure a
memorable day is described here.

Marriage & Civil Ceremonies in Devon
Congratulations...
“To get the full value
of a joy you must have
somebody to divide it
with” - Mark Twain
Having decided to get married or to
celebrate your partnership you now
need to discuss what sort of
ceremony you and your partner
would like. Will it be a church
wedding or will you choose a civil
ceremony at a local Register Office
or at one of the many properties
now approved for ceremonies.
Which ever location you choose this
booklet will help provide some of
the information you need to arrange
your big day.
Your Wedding
What sort of wedding?...
You may wish to marry in a church
or chapel, with the ceremony
conducted by an ordained minister.
This is a religious ceremony. If you
opt for this you will be required to
be married in the area where one of
you lives unless there are special
circumstances.
Alternatively you may be married in
a Register Office, a hotel, a castle or
anywhere else which is approved by
the local Registration Service as a
suitable venue for wedding
ceremonies. This is a civil ceremony. If
you opt for this you may be married
in any approved location in England
and Wales.
4
Making the arrangements...
Once you have decided which type
of wedding ceremony you would like
(religious or civil) you then need to
inform the appropriate authority.
Since you need to give notice of
your civil wedding at least 16 days
before the event (more below on
giving notice), then you need to start
planning the big day well in advance.
Different people approach this in
different ways, but on average you
can make arrangements for almost
any type of wedding in about 3
months. However, all venues whether
it be your local church, Register
Office or approved property book
up well in advance so make enquiries
early and check that everyone who
needs to be there is available
including local Registration staff if
your local minister advises you to.

Marriage & Civil Ceremonies in Devon
Civil Ceremonies
“Love looks not with
the eyes, but with the
mind, And therefore
is winged Cupid
painted blind” William Shakespeare
For civil weddings and partnerships,
you should approach your local
Registrar, who will need to agree
with you the date, time and location
for your ceremony. You may need to
spend some time securing dates
when all the people concerned with
your event are able to attend. For
example, a civil ceremony involves
not only the Registrar responsible for
the preliminary formalities and for
conducting the ceremony but also
requires the attendance of a
Registrar of Marriages.This officer will
record the event in the official
Marriage Register and will provide
you and your partner with the allimportant Marriage Certificate. Only
if these two people are available at
the same time on the date that you
wish to marry can the ceremony
take place. Remember, if you have
chosen a location for the ceremony
in an area in which neither of you
live, you will need to make contact
with the Registrar there too.
The initial arrangements - date, time
and place will need your full
attention.
Giving Notice
Once the initial arrangements have
been made, both you and your
partner will need to give notice.
Check with your local Minister if it is
a church wedding
6
The requirements for giving notice
are:
● you should both reside in
England or Wales for 8 days
before the date that you give
notice of marriage (moving to
another address after the notice
has been given will not invalidate
this document). Notice to be
given on the 9th day
● you must both give notice of
marriage by making an
appointment and attending the
office in person (book your
appointment before setting up
residency)
● once the notice has been given a
period of 15 clear days must
elapse before any ceremony may
take place
● an authority for marriage for you
and your partner should be
collected from the office(s)
where they were given at the
end of the 15 day period i.e.
from the 16th day on
● both authorities must be taken
or posted to the Registrar of the
District in which the ceremony is
scheduled to take place before
the day of the ceremony

be given by anyone under the age of
16 on the date that authorities are
issued.
There is a statutory fee payable to
the Registrar for each notice which is
given. Details of the current cost may
be obtained from any Register Office
in England and Wales.
Approved Premises
Your choice of civil venue includes
not only the local Register Office and
its Additional Ceremony Rooms, but
also a variety of properties such as
hotels, castles and stately homes.
Each property has been inspected by
representatives from the local
authority and is considered to be
suitable for the holding of civil
ceremonies.
The ceremony itself will be
conducted by staff from the local
Register Office. For those couples
who wish to use an approved venue
the choice is being extended all the
time. Details of properties which
have been approved are listed in the
section headed List of Approved
Ceremony Venues on pages 31-33.
If you decide to use an approved
venue you should first contact the
venue to ensure that the date you
are thinking about is available and
that the cost is acceptable to you and
your partner.
Then you should contact the
Registrar responsible for the area in
which the venue is located to check
that his or her colleagues are also

available for the date and time you
would like. An attendance fee,
payable at least one month in
advance of the ceremony, will be
required.This fee, which the Registrar
will be able to confirm at the time of
your enquiry, is in addition to the
statutory fee in respect of any notice.
Once a firm arrangement has been
made the Registrar will advise you of
the formalities which are required.
How Buildings are
Approved
The owner of a property may apply
to the local authority for a room or
rooms to be approved under the
Marriage Act 1994 and the Civil
Partnership Act 2004. An application
form is provided together with
Guidance Notes indicating what the
law requires. The fee, which covers a
three year period, will be mentioned
in the application pack.
Venues must be suitable for civil
ceremonies and should not have a
connection with religion - it is of
course a secular ceremony rather
than a religious one that will be
provided by staff from the
Registration Service. The area in
question must be within a permanent
structure.The venue is inspected by
representatives of the local authority.
Provided there are no objections
following a period of public
consultation a licence is issued.
Advice or application forms may be
obtained from each local authority
Do You Live Abroad?
The basic advice if you do not reside
within England or Wales is to contact
the local Registration Office where
you would like to have your
ceremony as soon as you and your
partner have made a decision to
marry in the county. Arrangements
are easily made but there may be a
number of documents which need to
be produced for inspection prior to
giving formal notice and some of
these documents may require
verification or in some cases
translation. Details about the
documents which may need to be
produced are referred to under
Giving Notice.You and your partner
must reside within England or Wales
for a period before the notice may
be given so it is always best to
contact the staff at the local Register
Office as early as possible.
Ceremonies Abroad
Couples who choose to marry or
register a civil partnership abroad
may need to obtain a Certificate of
No Impediment or other documents.
These documents may be requested
by representatives in other countries
and could ease the process of
organising a ceremony in another
country. However laws vary in
different countries and it would be
sensible to contact your local
Registration Office as soon as you
have made your decision.
The above information is a general guide only.

Religious Ceremonies
“A successful
marriage requires
falling in love many
times, always with the
same person.” Germaine Greer
12
A wedding is one of the most
important events in any couple’s life
together. It is a very personal and
intimate commitment celebrated in
a public setting.The wedding
service speaks of the love that has
changed the lives of two people
and which will go on shaping the
future as the covenant of marriage
is worked out.The wedding service
speaks of the now and also of what
yet might be.
You will want to think carefully
about where your marriage should
take place and who should be
involved in the planning of the
ceremony as well as who should
participate in it.You may already
have connections with a church and
that would be a sensible place to
begin. A church wedding can be
both personal and unique to you
while being rooted in a tradition
that holds past, present and future
together.
There are certain things that make
a Christian Wedding ceremony
different to others but churches are
places of hospitality, wanting to
reach out and make your special
day a one to be remembered for
the rest of your lives.
At the basis of the Christian
wedding ceremony is the belief that
love is a gift of God and one that
needs to be celebrated and shared.
Anglican Church service
Reading of Banns are an announcement
in church of your intention to marry
and a chance for anyone to put
forward a reason why the marriage
may not lawfully take place. Banns need
to be read in the parish where each of
you lives as well as the parish church in
which you are to be married, if that is
somewhere else.You must have your
banns read out in church for three
Sundays during the three months
before the wedding. This is often done
over three consecutive Sundays but
does not have to be.
A church wedding will add a spiritual
dimension to your marriage.The
ceremony includes God and looks to
him for help and guidance.
With the help of your Vicar, you can
makes choices about your hymns and
music, readings and what sort of
prayers you would like.
In a church wedding you make vows, or
promises, to each other before God as
well as in front of your friends and
family.
In most marriages these days, the bride
and groom say the same vows to each
other, however, there are alternative
versions in both Common Worship
and in the Book of Common Prayer
services which include the vow for the
bride 'to love, cherish and obey'.
You’re welcome to marry in the
Church of England whatever your
beliefs, whether or not you are
christened and regardless of whether
you go to church or not. It’s your
church, and we welcome you!

Roman Catholic Marriages
“A happy marriage
has in it all the
pleasures of
friendships, all the
enjoyment of sense and
reason - and indeed
all the sweets of life” Joseph Addison
If both of you are Roman Catholic, the
publication of banns goes ahead as
normal but they do not form part of
the legal preliminaries. If only one
partner is Roman Catholic, banns are
not published and the priest of the
Roman Catholic partner will have to
give permission for the marriage to take
place either in a Roman Catholic church
or a non-Roman Catholic church.
For further information talk to your
priest.
Jewish Marriages
Civil law allows Jewish weddings to take
place anywhere, for example, in a
synagogue, private house, hired venue or
even outdoors. Rabbinical law requires
that a Jewish ceremony is performed
under a chuppah (a wedding canopy).
Jewish ceremonies can also take place at
any time except on the Sabbath
(Saturday) and on festival or fast days.
For further information and advice
please telephone the Jewish Marriage
Council Tel: 020-8203 6311.
Nonconformist Church
Marriages
Marriages in Protestant Churches other
than the Church of England, follow
similar procedures to marriages in the
Roman Catholic Church.
For further information talk to your
minister.
Quaker Marriages
Quaker marriages require an application
to be made to the registering officer at
the Society of Friends' monthly meeting
where the marriage ceremony is to take
place. If only one partner is a member
of the Society, the other will be asked to
state that they are in sympathy with the
nature of the marriage and they must
provide letters of recommendation from
two other members. Once the
14
formalities have been completed, the
registering officer will issue a form that
needs to be taken to the
superintendent registrar when you give
notice.
For further information and advice
please contact the Religious Society of
Friends,Tel: 020-7663 1000.
Muslim Marriages
UK marriage laws allow for mosques to
be registered for the solemnisation of
marriages according to the rites of the
Muslim religion.
For further information and advice
please contact your Imam.
Hindu Marriages
UK marriage laws allows for Hindu
temples to be registered for marriage
according to its own rites.
For further information talk to your
priest.
Sikh Marriages
UK marriage laws allow for a Gurdwara
or Sikh meeting place to be registered
for the solemnisation of marriages
according to the rites of the Sikh
religion.
In all cases...
...the legal requirements to be fulfilled
are those that apply to civil marriages.
The church or religious building in which
you wish to marry must normally be
located within the registration district
where you or your partner live, or, if
outside the district, be a place of regular
worship for either or both of you.
The service will be conducted by the
minister of the venue, but occasionally a
Registrar is required to register the
marriage. If the building in which you
intend to marry is not registered for the
solemnisation of marriages, you must
arrange for a civil ceremony beforehand
to comply with the requirements of the
law.

Other
Celebratory
Ceremonies
The Registration Service offers a selection
of ceremonies individually designed to
celebrate events such as child naming and
renewal of marriage vows. Neither of
these ceremonies has any legal standing
but are offered as a civil alternative to a
religious Christening or renewal of vows.
Each ceremony is tailored to your own
requirements and may be conducted by a
Celebrant in a Registration Office or at an
approved venue. Ceremonies are not
available in private homes.

Things to Think About
“Little deeds of
kindness, little words
of love, Make this
earth an Eden, like
the heaven above.”
- Julia Carney
As you approach the big day there
are numerous things which you and
your partner will need to organise.
Here are just some of them:
● Remember to collect any
paperwork from your local
Register Office and deliver it to
the minister or Registrar (if
required).
● If you have chosen to enhance
your ceremony by including
readings or music make sure that
the items have been discussed
with the Registrar and that the
music, if recorded, has been
checked and is ready for the day
● You may need to meet the
Registrar in advance of the day to
discuss the ceremony and to pay
the necessary fees
● Remember to ask two people to
be available to act as your
witnesses
● If you have decided to include
readings during your ceremony
Robert Davies Photography
22
●
●
●
●
find a volunteer who is prepared
to do this for you and let them
have a copy of the words before
the actual day
Depending on how many guests
you have invited find someone to
act as an Usher
Discuss your photographic and
video requirements with a
professional photographer or
with a friend who is able to
record your special day as you
want to remember it
Discuss and order all floral
arrangements with a florist of
your choosing. Remember that
most venues will already have
some flowers on display but
specialist floral displays may need
to be discussed and delivered on
the day
Ensure that everyone who you
want to be at the ceremony has
transport and is aware of how to
get there.

Marriage & Civil Ceremonies in Devon
On the Day
“Grow old along
with me, the best is
yet to be.” Robert Browning
Your day is very special. Everyone
involved with the ceremony forms a
part of the overall plan and should
be contacted a few days in advance
to check final arrangements. However
some things only happen on the day.
Arriving at the Ceremony
● Tell people where they can park
● Ensure that the main party,
including close relatives, arrive on
time
● People who have agreed to
participate in the ceremony
should be seated towards the
front of the Ceremony Room
● Musical choices should be
discussed with the Registrar or
organiser in advance
● If you have arranged for someone
to take official photographs or to
video the ceremony this individual
must agree with the Minister or
Registrar where they stand.
When giving notice you will be able
to discuss your choice of declaratory
and contracting words with the
registrar or your religious celebrant.
Generally, if you do not mention this
matter, the traditional statements will
be used.
Signing the Register
Once the declarations have been
completed the Minister or Registrar
will ask you to sign the official
Register followed by your Witnesses
and finally by the Minister or
Registrar.
Time will be allowed for photographs
to be taken with you signing the
Register. The Certificate will then be
produced and presented to you.
You and your guests will then move
on to the next part of your day.
The Minister or Registrar responsible
for conducting your ceremony will
discuss the actual wording and
content with you before the day. To
comply with the law you and your
partner will need to repeat certain
legal declarations through which you
will be guided by the Minister or
Registrar.The remainder of your
ceremony may be personalised in a
number of ways including
● individual declarations or
commitments to each other
● exchanging of rings
● reading of poetry or prose
● musical interludes

Renewal of
Marriage Vows
This ceremony gives a married
couple the opportunity to renew
their marriage vows and to
celebrate married life together.
Each ceremony is unique and is
designed specifically for the couple
and will contain options of their
choosing including an introduction
and welcome by the Celebrant,
readings, renewal of marriage vows,
signing of a certificate, rededication of
rings or giving of new rings plus
closing words. A normal ceremony
would take between 15 and 20
minutes but may last longer.
The ceremony may be for couples
who have been married for a
number of years or may be adapted
for newly married couples who may
wish to renew their marriage vows in
front of family or friends unable to
attend the original marriage
ceremony.
Ceremonies may be held in the local
Registration Office or at an approved
venue.
A commemorative Certificate will be
provided to record the event. The
couple will need to provide their
original marriage certificate before
the ceremony may be arranged.
The ceremony has no legal status, it
provides couples with a non-religious
opportunity to renew their marriage
vows.
Couples wishing to organise a
Renewal of Marriage Vows Ceremony
should contact their local Registration
Office (see page 16-21) who will
arrange an informal appointment for
them to discuss the event with a
trained Celebrant. The appointment
will last about 30 minutes. Once their
options have been discussed the
ceremony will then be designed
especially for their event. Most
ceremonies are organised about six
to eight weeks in advance of the date
but they can be organised at short
notice if required.
You may need to consider:
● the promises and commitments
that you may wish to make to
your partner
● will you and your partner make
these promises in full or would
you want the Celebrant to read
them out
● do you want to exchange rings or
present your partner with a gift
to remember the event
● where would you like the
ceremony to take place
● would you like the ceremony to
be in private or will you invite
guests to be present
A Very Civilised Venue
For A Civil Service
The Council Chamber at the Guildhall Dartmouth is a wonderful place to hold
an intimate civil service. The historic setting is something really special. Portraits
of Mayors past look down from the walls and the polished wood panelling adds to
the peaceful ambience. The Council Chamber is used on a regular basis for Marriage
Ceremonies, as the Council holds a Civil Marriage Licence.
There are two rooms that can be hired for receptions, also within the Guildhall. The Clifton
Room will accommodate a maximum of 60 people and is ideal for smaller gatherings. The
Ballroom will accommodate a maximum of 200
people. It has a stage at one end, making it ideal
for receptions with musical entertainment. A kitchen
with full cooking facilities is available on request.
For a really different summer wedding reception our
18th Century Open Air Market is also available for
hire.

Marriage & Civil Ceremonies in Devon
“If thou must love me,
let it be for naught,
except for love's sake
only” - Elizabeth
Barratt Browning
Having decided on the type of
ceremony you now need to think
about the Reception and where it is
going to be held. If you have chosen
one of the fantastic venues within
Devon that are licensed for civil
ceremonies you may be able to stay
exactly where you are for the rest of
the day. This allows family and friends
to enjoy the event without having to
drive between locations but it does
depend very much on what type of
Reception suits you and your partner.
If you want to stay even closer to
home you may want to use your
local Village Hall. If so there are
plenty of catering companies who will
be happy to discuss your
requirements including decorating the
Hall with balloons, flowers and party
poppers.
As far as style of Reception is
concerned if you have chosen a
themed event you may want to
continue this same theme through
into your Reception be it Medieval
Lords and Ladies, Bonnie and Clyde
or the local Chapter of Hells Angels!
Of course you may want to organise
a more traditional breakfast hosted
by a Master of Ceremonies.
Whichever option you consider most
Event Co-ordinators will be happy to
discuss the options and will help you
create an individually designed event
that you and your family will
remember for ever.
Many things are possible but think
about them now so that
arrangements can be discussed well
in advance.
Have a perfect
day - plan ahead

Speech
-making
A few basics to help you
do your best:
● Before the wedding day get into the habit
of carrying a notebook to jot down any
thoughts or memories that could be
worked into your speech.
● Structure your speech into different areas
you want to cover, such as thanking the
guests, anecdotes about the groom, words
for the bride and your speech’s conclusion.
● Read your speech out loud again and again.
Making a recording can also be useful.
Check for places where you speak too fast
or where your point is unclear.
● Check with the other speakers to make
sure that you don’t duplicate material.
● Time your speech and stick to it, five
minutes is long enough.
● Keep jokes and anecdotes short, if one
doesn’t work move on to the next. Don’t
laugh at your own jokes.
● You may think you know your speech by
heart but keep your text handy, the stress
of public speaking can sometimes make you
forget your lines.
● Make copies of the final version to give to
other guests in case you lose your copy.
● Speak as if you were talking to one person,
and address them directly. Look around the
room, but take time to focus on one
person at a time.
● It’s always a good idea to end with a toast.
For you, it’s something to work towards
and, for the guests, it’s a recognisable finish.
● Remember - everyone is on your side and
no one wants you to do badly.
Chambercombe
Manor Ilfracombe
Nestling in a secluded hidden valley Chambercombe
Manor, an 11th century Manor House, is an idyllic
location for your special wedding ceremony.
The Great Hall seats up to 40 guests and has standing room for 20 more.
It is the original and oldest part of the house and is furnished with many
fine pieces from different eras. It features a 1640s English oak table, an
Elizabethan court cupboard, and a 19th century display cabinet reputed
to be from Germany’s Black Forest.
The Chapel holds up to 10 guests and provides a small and intimate
setting for your civil wedding ceremony. It was formerly a private family
chapel and was licensed by Edmund Lacey Bishop of Exeter, in 1439.
Afterwards you can have a buffet reception in our Tea Rooms or
alternatively you can enjoy a toast and canapés or buffet in our marquee.
We are fully licensed to sell alcohol.

The Symbolic Meanings
of Flowers
Flowers in general symbolise fertility and
healthy children. Purple flowers symbolise
Christ's blood, while white flowers symbolise
innocence. Strong smelling herbs were
thought to ward off bad luck, evil spirits and
ill health by their strong smells, so were
entwined around the flowers in the bride's
bouquet. A red rose and white snowdrop
separately mean joy and hope. Forget-MeNot has been a symbol of undying love even
since before the Middle Ages.

Buying
Jewellery
The wedding ring is symbolic of the union of
marriage and you will be wearing your
wedding ring for the rest of your life so it’s
important to choose a design you’ll be
comfortable with. Consider a variety of
metals, shapes, thicknesses and styles in order
to find the perfect choice for you.
Look for accessories after you have chosen
your dress. When you are choosing your
jewellery have a picture of your dress with you
so you can keep the style in mind.
Ask the experts for advice.Talk to your dress
retailer, contact wedding jewellery specialists
and read up in the magazines to get as much
advice as you can.
First choose your hair accessories. How will you
wear your hair on the big day? Talk to your
hairdresser.Take pictures from magazines to
show your hairdresser or jewellery designer,
these will help you get the look you want.
Keep to a budget. If your budget doesn’t allow
you to buy a whole collection of jewellery think
about buying at least one special piece of
quality jewellery and finding other accessories
to match elsewhere. You will then have one
special keepsake.
Pearls are perfect for weddings. They are
elegant and flattering. Add glamour and sparkle
by combining pearls with diamantes and
crystals.
What about your bridesmaids? Jewellery makes
a great thank you gift and can also be
something to wear on the day.
Order your jewellery in time for your last dress
fitting, so you can see the whole look come
together.
Enjoy choosing your bridal jewellery, get your
friends involved and have fun.

~ Natalie Cole

Choosing a
Videographer
Moving Pictures of a moving
Occasion.
Employing a professional Video
Company will ensure that all aspects
of the day are recorded from the
final preparations of the Bride,
Bridesmaids, Groom, Mum and Dad,
the guests arriving at the church, the
ceremony and afterwards outside for
the photo call.
Following on from this, the filming of
everyone arriving at the reception
venue, greeting of the guests and of
course cutting the cake followed by
those all important speeches.
The evening party can be recorded
depicting the couples first dance and
the ‘antics’ of friends who were not at
the church service or reception.
Selecting your Videographer can be
difficult. A visit to the Videographer’s
Studio to view past work is essential.
Personal recommendations are best
so a phone call to past clients will
give you a good indication of your
camera operators performance on
the day and the final presentation.
Ceremonies can be expensive and
costs can sometimes determine the
quality of services provided.
Always remember the old adage “
You get what you pay for!”
Checklist for booking a
videographer:
● Are they able to supply
references
● Can you see a copy of a similar
video they have recently
completed
● Identify what packages they have
on offer, and what you actually
get for your money
● Will they use a digital camera
● Are they able to edit the video
● Can they add music and effects
● Are they prepared to visit the
venue to see the layout if they
are not familiar with it and discuss
their requirements with the
owners
● How much deposit do you need
to pay before you can make the
booking
● When will you have to pay the
balance
● Can they make DVD copies and
additional copies of the video
● Do they have the necessary
insurances

Arriving
in Style
Robert Davies Photography
Depending on where you have decided to hold
the ceremony, people will need to reach
different venues during the day - the venue, the
reception and even the airport or railway
station in time to depart for the holiday.
At the start of the day unless one or both of
you are already staying at the venue, which can
of course be arranged depending on where it
is taking place, you will both need to arrive on
time. Whether you choose a White Rolls
Royce or a horse and carriage make your
enquiries early and ensure that the staff at the
chosen venue are also notified - just in case
there are any logistical problems!
Other members of the party will also need to
be transported not only to the venue but also
to the Reception if this is being held
somewhere else. Think about how they will be
moved from one place to another. Do you
want them to travel in a double decker bus or
use a couple of stretch limos.
Whatever type of transport you want to use
think about it now and let people know well in
advance.

Marriage & Civil Ceremonies in Devon

Formal or informal, simple or
complicated, large or small, your
event requires the same amount of
attention and care. It is important to
choose a caterer with whom you get
on as well as one who is open to
your ideas and totally committed to
the success of your day.
Ask a guest what they remember
best about a wedding and it will
inevitably be the food. It is worth
spending time and a generous
portion of your budget on getting it
right and to do this, you need the
right caterer.
Every event is different and food
ideas change with the season, but
your dream ideas can become a
reality, so finding the person who
understands your ideas is crucial. It is
amazing what delicacies can be
served up in the middle of a field; hot
or cold; fully served, a buffet or the
spit roasts and barbeques.
Most venues come with their own
package of coordinators, chefs and
staff. If you choose to have a
marquee in the garden or in a field,
you should contact several local
caterers and get a feel for what they
provide, the quality of their food and
the cost. Marquees and portable
loos are a must but are generally in
high demand and must be booked
well in advance.
Couples are advised to meet a
prospective caterer for the first time
at the venue itself. They are the
experts and it’s worth consulting
them with your catering
requirements before even booking
the ceremony. Local caterers often
have knowledge of other local
professional suppliers such as florists,
photographers and musicians.
Cakes are very personal. Have an
idea of the design and type of cake
before contacting cake suppliers. Ask
them to show you examples of cakes
they have previously made. This will
give you an idea about their creativity.
A good caterer will be able to advise
you regarding drink. Most people
drink far less than they think they do
– four to six glasses of wine or
champagne per person in average.
Finding a local provider of wine and
champagne is fun and they will sell on
sale or return.Try some out, it could
save you a lot of money and anxiety.

“You are always new,
The last of your kisses
was ever the sweetest.”

Choosing a
Photographer
There are so many photographers
around, even talented friends and
family, you’d think finding your
photographer would be easy. With
a few simple ground rules, narrowing
down the list can be made a lot
easier. The best way to bring back
the joy of your special day is to
ensure you’ve arranged for a
reputable qualified photographer to
record it.
● Always get at least one personal
recommendation, ask to see a
portfolio of wedding shots and, if
possible, the complete results
from a single commission so you
can judge the photographer’s
particular style and approach.
● Meet two or three photographers
and make no decisions at the
meetings.
● Is the photographer professionally
qualified? Look for the letters
LBIPP, ABIPP or FBIPP after the
photographer's name.
● Do you like the photographer's
work?
● Do you like the photographer?
They will be sharing one of the
most important days of your life
and you’ll respond better to
someone you like.
● Does the photographer have
Professional Indemnity insurance
cover?
● Think carefully before entrusting
your photos to friends or family.
What if something goes wrong,
will it destroy the friendship?
would you be able to forgive
them?
Once you’ve chosen your photographer
take time to discuss your requirements.
● What style of photographs are
you looking for?
● Do any cancellation charges apply?
● Consider a pre-event photo
shoot.This gives you and your
photographer a chance to get to
know each other a bit better.
● Check that the photographer you
meet will be the same one who
does the work on your special
day.
● Check what happens after the
event, when will you receive proof
images? how will your photos be
presented? etc.
● Your pictures are important. After
the event is over, when all the
food and flowers are gone, there
will be the rings, your partner and
the pictures which will be there
to recall all the wonderful
memories of the day.
