Free wifi in Puerto
Pollensa
A pilot project for 4G wifi in
coastal areas has been launched
in Puerto Pollensa. The scheme,
operated by IB-Red, covers
the frontline between Llenaire
and the Illa d’Or. Money for it
has come from the European
regional development fund,
and the wifi network is due to
be rolled out across the island.
The Puerto Pollensa network
operates from the transmitter
on top of the Sant Martí peak
in Alcúdia.
ISO certification for
Pollensa beaches
Pollensa has joined other
municipalities in the northern
zone in having obtained
certification under the ISO
international standards for
its beaches. The two relevant
standards are those for
quality management and
environmental management,
and the certification applies
across the municipality, so
Formentor, Cala San Vicente
and smaller coves and beaches
as well as Puerto Pollensa’s
beach.
Formentor hotel best in Spain
The Hotel Formentor regularly
notches up awards and
accolades and so, for the fifth
year running, it is the recipient
of the award for best boutique
hotel in Spain, as given by the
Oscars of the tourism industry,
the World Travel Awards.
Alcudiamar
anniversary
Though the Friends of
Alcúdia originally conceived
the idea for the marina in
Puerto Alcúdia back in 1968,
it wasn’t until 1986 that the
Alcudiamar association was
formally founded. In 1989, it
was granted the concession for
moorings and so 1989 is taken
as the year when Alcudiamar
truly came into being. The 25th
anniversary has, therefore, been
celebrated.
Bust of Roman
emperor to be
auctioned
The bust of Emperor Augustus,
the first emperor of the Roman
Empire, which was discovered
in Alcúdia way back in the
sixteenth century, is to be
put up for auction through
Christie’s. The bust is currently
held by the Archaeological
Museum in Madrid, and
the sale is causing some
controversy, as the Spanish state
has not been given first refusal.
The bust was found in the area
by the Santa Anna oratory by
Pollentia, though the exact date
of its discovery is unknown.
The oratory is now at the centre
of renewed excitement among
archaeologists at the Pollentia
excavations, as latest digs point
strongly to the probability
of a discovery related to the
old Roman port. The sea was
known to have extended some
distance inland compared to
today, but the exact location of
the port and of its great gate
has not been known.
Decision on Pollensa
fishmongers in
September
The old fishmongers building
in the Plaça Major is to be
renovated. But what will it look
like and what will it contain?
The tender process for local
architects will close by the end
of this month and a committee
will meet in September to
decide which is the best project.
The town hall has inferred that
it would like the tourist office
to be incorporated into the
renovated building. Worries
have been expressed that its
new look might not be in
keeping with architecture in
the square.
Capellans’ weekend
parking
Owners of the cottages in Ses
Casetes des Capellans in Playa
de Muro have complained
about the amount of cars that
are parked in the enclave,
especially on Sundays. Muro
town hall has, therefore,
contracted a private security
firm in order to limit the
number of cars which can
park there. Car owners are
also being fined for parking
along the carretera, where
parking is forbidden. It has
been very noticeable that the
level of parking in Sector Two
of Playa de Muro - from the
bridge to Ses Casetes - has risen
dramatically this summer. The
reason why is not clear, though
it is believed it is as a result of
so much positive publicity for
the beach.
¡Hola!
Pedestrianization to
start in November
After all the it’s on-it’s off
arguments over several years,
the pedestrianization scheme
(semi-pedestrianization
scheme) in Puerto Pollensa is
now set to start at the end of
the season. As has been well
signalled, the scheme will cover
the frontline from Llenaire
to the yacht club roundabout
and will allow one-way traffic
coming from Alcúdia.
Son Bauló sewage
project
The regional environment
ministry has put out to public
consideration the plan for a
new waste plant in Son Bauló
that will feature an outlet
three and a half kilometres out
into the bay and at a depth of
25 metres. The ministry has
admitted that there could be a
risk of discharges on beaches
were there to be some failure in
the pumping system. The plan
also includes a budget for the
replenishment of any posidonia
sea grass, which might be
affected.
Posada de Verano to Improvements to
be boarded up
Puerto Alcúdia park
Alcúdia town hall has decided
to board up the abandoned
Posada de Verano hostel by
the La Marina beach because
of its neglected state and use
by vagrants. The hostel was
repossessed because its owners
could not pay outstanding
debts, but the town hall has
been struggling to in fact
find the owners and come to
some resolution regarding
the property. It is possible
that it could be re-developed,
though it is also possible that its
deterioration will be such that
by law the town hall can order
its demolition.
T A L K
The small park near to Bellevue
and next to the canal by the
Viva Sunrise hotel has received
some attention from Alcúdia
town hall. Following a meeting
with assistant mayor Joan
González and the secretarygeneral of the Ciudadanos
de las Illes Balears party,
Francisco Baeza, action has
been taken. The small park has
often suffered from a lack of
maintenance, contributing to
a poor image in this part of
Alcúdia’s main tourism centre.
There are lots of things going
on still, including the annual
walk from Pollensa to the
Llenaire beach on the 15th
August. You can go by horse
and cart, horse, bike or by foot
and if you have the tickets
already, you can enjoy a paella
on the beach. If not, it’s worth
popping along to Roser Vella
about 9.30 to see everyone
start their journey.
The Fiestas don’t show any
sign of stopping, take a look at
the agenda page (4-5). Also,
something new this week. Hunt
the Thimble! Find it, photo it
and post on Facebook. The first
person to do so gets €10.
Hasta luego!

Christmas In July?
Nickie Baylis
How could any of us forget March 22nd
2014…it might well have been December.
After weeks of sunny Saturdays we woke
up to the cold, wind and it was RAINING.
But it didn’t put us off, all 50 of us were still
committed to the Dip In The Sea II. Our
aim was to raise awareness of Breast cancer
by wearing a pink bra, and Ovarian cancer
by wearing green knickers, and by doing
so, raising money to directly help people
that were undergoing treatment for Cancer
and those who needed financial, or emotional
support as a result of this cruel illness. We
had a great time raising a huge amount of
money through sponsorship and raffle ticket
sales, which was followed by Debbie Felstead
shaving her head at Can Balache on April
26thand Rachel running the Pollensa half
marathon. The Nurses at Son Llatzer hospital
didn’t know what to say when their new
equipment was delivered last week. With
your money we have bought 6 wheelchairs,
different types of special cushions and pedals.
We bought board games for the day centre
and we treated the nurses to a superdooper
coffee machine with 160 capsules for different
teas and coffees. Apart from this we have also
donated €4,838 to The Cancer Support Group
Mallorca.After our shopping and donations
we still had €912.15. We took the liberty of
contacting ASPANOB, is a children’s cancer
charity, to see if we could help. They have just
received permission to paint the children’s
Josefina’s Animal
Refuge From Howard Mullen
Josefina’s Animal Refuge, situated just off
the Cami de Llenaire, 2km from Pollensa
Old Town, recently welcomed two English
youngsters who were volunteering over the
summer. Georgina (15) and Lucas (12) are the
children of es-England footballer, Graeme Le
Saux. Every year the family spend the summer
Oncology Department at Son Espases hospital
(at the moment the walls are white) they have
the help of child physiologist who has helped
them to design the decoration and the quote
they have received is €8,000
It has taken us a while to order the equipment
for the hospital, but it is important that you

THANK YOU.
in the North of Majorca, and Georgina and
Lucas have become volunteers at The Refuge,
two or three days a week during their summer
holidays. What is it that has motivated them
to volunteer? First and foremost, they both
clearly love working with animals. Some of
the jobs are not easy, some are dirty jobs, but
they took it all in their stride.
Each animal has a story, and Georgina and
Lucas have got to know many of them, this is
perhaps a factor in them volunteering.
Of course these stories also raise questions,
“How can anyone just dump a dog in the
street, and stop caring for it? Why would
someone just leave a box of puppies outside
the Refuge? How can anyone not care for and
not feed their own cat?” The questions go on
and on, but the biggest question of all was,
“Why are there not more people supporting
Josefina’s work by offering their time as
volunteers?”

Ask Aunty Marga ...
Dear Aunty Marga,
I’m seeing more cockroaches at the
moment. My wife is useless around
them and I am left having to deal with
them. Do you have any tips?
Resident, Ternelles
I am afraid these horrible little critters love
the warm balmy weather. They also hate it
when the council fumigates the drains, which
is why they are coming out. First of all, set
up a panic room for any scaredy cats of the
house. You need to act quick with a spray or
just catch them with a bowl. It really is all
about prevention. Plug any plugholes, use
sinkhole covers, clear away the dishes every
night and don’t leave food lying around.
Hoover behind the fridge, dishwasher
regularly, they love warm spaces. Also,
don’t keep cardboard boxes, they are a
haven for roaches and their eggs. Puaj!

Day 2

Your online travel guide for everything you need to plan, book & enjoy your holiday
29
We begin this run in Puerto Alcudia at the start of the stretch
of beach by the taxi rank. From here, we run on the sand
alongside the sparkling Mediterranean. The sand starts off
firm and flat by the sea edge but gets finer and harder to run
on further along making for a good workout for the lower
legs. After five kilomentres, we reach a jetty with rocks which
is popular with fishermen. We run along to the end and back
then we leave the beach and cross over a little bridge into
Alcudia. We follow the road parallel to the beach for a few
kilometres before entering an area of pine woodland by the
Ivory Playa Hotel. We run through this shady forest for a short
while before reaching a paved pedestrian walkway at the back
of the beach which takes us all the way back to our start point.
This route is 11kms in total with a combination of sand, road
and earth, not forgetting the lovely sea views.

Swim Training Techniques:
Side Kick: kick on one side with one arm out in front of you in
the water. Keep the extended arm relaxed. Keep head under water
coming up for breath. This drill will make you more comfortable on
your side, encouraging body rotation.
Arm Side Kick: kick on one side with one arm out in front of
you in the water. Bring the other arm forward in a freestyle stroke
to head level. Pull down back to your side. Come up to breathe. This
drill develops front-quadrant arm timing.
Pause Swimming: while kicking on your side, bring the
other arm forward in a freestyle stroke to head level. Pause in that
position while kicking. Pull the other arm to complete the stroke
and roll your body all the way around to the other side (180 degree
turn). Repeat as many times as possible breathing regularly. This
drill encourages body rotation and front-quadrant arm timing.

Game of Padel
Anyone?
Is it tennis, is it squash? And what are those
swingball bats doing on the court? Yep, it’s
padel, the sporting phenomenon taking Spain
by storm, and one of the fastest growing
sports in the world.
Played in a glass enclosure (like in squash)
on a court with a net (like in tennis) players
knock a ball (like a tennis ball only with less
pressure) to each other. They play in singles
but doubles is more common. The serve is kept
underarm and it’s ok if the ball rebounds off
the glass barriers, as long as it hits the ground
first. The only lines are the serve box, the glass
walls are the perimeters of the court.
It takes some getting used to. If your
opponent smashes the ball, instead of running
back to return (as you would in tennis) you
run towards
the net to
receive the ball
from the back
wall. Tactically
speaking,

The Mallorquinista’s BIG Walk:
Update
It all started one night in 1974. A group of friends were
together in Tolo’s Bar Guell, in Palma. Six-year-old Rita, Tolo’s
daughter was running between tables, refreshing the friends
with a siphon bottle. Suddenly the girl stumbled and fell on
top of the bottle, which exploded on her chest. Everybody
feared the worst, but miraculously, the girl was unharmed.
With that a client called out “It’s a miracle; we have to give
thanks to the Virgin of Lluc and go on a pilgrimage to praise
her!” The next morning 30 friends got together to start
walking the 48km from Bar Güell to the monastery of Lluc.
Only 6 reached the sacred destination. The group decided
to walk the path every year. At first only the small group of
friends participated each year. Since 1980, when the official
Group Güell was formed, the annual Güell a Lluc a Peu has
grown year on year.
Charles told TOTN: “It was an astonishing and uplifting
experience. Around 19,000 people registered for the walk and 5,000
made it to Lluc. I walked all the way with Mike and we finished the
48km in just under 10 hours which was a very respectable time.
We walked 38km along country roads and then the final steep
ascent from Caimari to Llluc was via the Pilgrims Path. This was
the toughest part, having walked for 8 hours and then faced with
the ascent but we achieved it. We both love music so along the
way we discussed bass players from many rock bands to keep our
minds active and avoid hallucinations! The organization was superb
- the country roads were closed off, there was a huge police and
ambulance presence. Regular water and fruit supplies were available
as we passed through Marratxi, Santa Maria, Binnisalem, Consell,
Llosetta, Biniamar. Selva and Caimari. There were treatment tents for
blisters and Selva (the final staging post for the ascent) resembled a
refugee camp with people lying all over the road receiving treatment.
My inspiration for the walk was Sgt Rick Clement a good friend who
lost his legs in an explosion in Afghanistan.”
Charles has raised nearly €900 for Help for Heroes.
Contributions can still be made via www.justgiving.com/
Charles-Nutter or in cash at Euromart in Puerto Pollensa.
