This is my last issue as editor for the Loud Pedal. I
have enjoyed doing this job for you, the members of
Oregon Region, for the past five years. I thank you for
your support and encouragement over this time. I appreciate the opportunities that I have had as a result of
preparing this magazine, from covering our members
back at Mid-Ohio for the Valvoline Runoffs, to the 24
Hours of Daytona when Darrel Havens and Team Seattle
(many of whom race with us regularly) took the GT3
class win. It has been a real privilege to serve you
You may notice that this issue is missing a few things
that are normally here... the minutes from the Board of
Directors meeting have met with unexpected technical
difficulties and will be printed in a future issue. I have not
received a RE column (REView) for this month, and as
you see below, Dave let me know there will be no Road
Racing Director column this month either.
I want to wish your new Editor, Jeff Zurschmeide great
success with this magazine in the future.
In closing, I am left thinking, what would I like my final
words here to be... remember, why we are all here... for the
love of motorsport.. this is a club, and we do this for fun...
.... so don’t forget to have fun!!! Thanks, dB

THE DUCK STOPS HERE
By Howard “duck” Allen, Competition Manager
The life style of Club racing….
By the time you read this the world will be consumed with the first anniversary of what is this generation's Pearl Harbor. So let's pause and give blessing
for what we have.
To watch Todd dance with Christine at his wedding.
To look up and see Gary Manchester enter the track in
his Mini. To have Matt Haubner WANT to return to the
point and work corners to learn from his mistakes, and
then come back the next day to work turn 6 and save a
"lost" parakeet. (At last report the parakeet is healthy,
happy and enjoying his new home with Erin!) To hear
Margo back on the landline. To be at a morning meeting on Friday and see we have enough workers to cover
the corners. (YES we WILL race today!). Having a tear
in your eye at the same meeting when Hugh shows up
with Bluto's stuff (ID, whistle, Pro's patch) that his
friends found at a garage sale. And listening to him
describe his plans to make a memorial wall in his home
for Dave. (YES guys I felt your presence.)
It's sitting in the tower at the one minute warning listening to a clear & ready around the course, as to your
right the motors begin to fire. It's two PM and you start
looking for the redtails to circle across from the point.
Or it's almost four and you begin to look for the heron
to return. It's not just any city park that we meet at; it's
a sanctuary. It's looking down to see the tires in place
and knowing enough people cared enough to do what
it took to get them there. Maybe Dr. Chris was the one
vote that did it. (a tip-of-the-helmet to you, Nigel
Wick, for that). It's Mark Wigginton stopping by at
beer that night (in his Mini) to make sure that all was
right. It's having Cindy Mitchell bring a bundle of love
and fur called Cocoa into our life.
It is coming home at night and meeting P.I.R.,
Halsey, Dano & J.B. on the porch. Yes, eight years
later the family of track cats are still here and enjoying
life. It's the way the sun shines off Mike "the Sultan"
O'Callaghan's head or the way Catia says turn "seex"
over the landline. It's listening to Margie pump up the
auction for Doernbecher Hospital, and being glad we
have the "other" guys to keep us honest and on our
toes. It's doing the drivers' report cards with Linda
Blackburn over lunch. It's sitting under the sun porch
with the Graffys, partying with some fine people. It's
looking at the pumpkin patch and knowing we just
well may have the best in the business here with us. It's
Kolbe, Ben, Bernice and company busting our butt's
with the marque clubs, earning some extra $$, and
hoping maybe we can be a commercial for this region.
It's sitting in the tower listening to Dan, who may well
be on his way to being the next Gordon Scott and the
new "Voice of P.I.R." Thanks to the board for making
him a member.
It is listening to Bill Murray do color commentary,
as the next Murray is racing around the track. It's the
red #33 Mustang with a huge wave on the cool down
lap, knowing he going to give Tim Joregonson some
sh*t for beating him again. It's Fred, Chris and Garth
busting beads and butt for the racers, not to mention
Jason and Ron.
It's wondering how much more gray Dane is going to
get, or how much longer Todd's hair is going to
get before Ginny makes him cut it.<G>. It's Spec
Miata, which in less than a year, is now the race everybody marks off as a "must see" on the schedule. It's
having Fred fly in from Aspen to join sons Jon & Mike
Davies on the track. Its seeing the "Round Guy" cooking dinner for us and marveling at HOW MUCH
weight he's lost and just how good he looks.
Am I the only one here that can't believe Gordon
"too tall" Jones is 59? Or that after attending his second wedding of the day, after qualifying for a race,
Phil Fogg Jr. can still look like he could pose for the
cover of Gentlemen's Quarterly?
It's working the point on a test day watching the 1986
President's Cup winner, Jimmy Vasser, do his excellent thing for Bobby Rahal, 1975 president's cup winner. And remembering back to 1991 when it was
Bobby doing the same thing only in heavy rain.
It's running out for the paper on Thursday to see what
Boone has in Trackside. It's certain Friday nights
at the Westside Grill where a very unruly bartender
holds court (OK he's the same here at the track. Right
Ho?) Or it’s the smile that Johnny Humphreys has
when he gets out of the car. Or its wondering if Bailey
(Jan Humpreys' dog) is indeed the smallest pet in the
world. It's being in the tower to watch a profile in
courage, as Bill Drawta holds court at turn twelve.
It's having the senior director, who busts her butt for
this region, being a world class editor to make sense of
this for you.
It is life lived to its fullest, taken in 20 or 25
minute sessions.
So the next time someone tells me to "get a life" I'll
just smile and say "you should have mine!"
Because I know I'm not alone and we are indeed all
in this together.
God Bless.

Well, it seems like it’s been months since I had a column
to write. Well, I guess it has since I missed August. Sorry
about that. Guess we have a lot to cover, so let’s get to it!!
First off, I wanted to bid farewell to our current editor,
Doug Berger. This will be his last issue in that post. He
has put a lot of himself into this publication each month
and he will be missed. Thank you for all of you hard work
and dedication, Doug!!
The RallyCross scene is booming!! We are averaging
over 100 entrants each event at the midpoint of the season.
Thank you one and all for coming out and supporting the
Region on this front. Our 2nd date at the Washington
County Fairplex was in late June and things went as smooth
as usual, with an extra special surprise: Larry Vollum
brought out a couple of the ‘Group B’ cars to play. Just
watching these machines in action is awe-inspiring! We
also had our first event of the season at the Columbia County
Fairgrounds in late July. This one had its own excitement:
one of our younger competitors managed to flip over a
Datsun 510. Worse yet, it was his uncle’s car!! Devin is all
right, and the car was free, so not much loss there. As just
about everyone at the event said ‘No it’s ready for a cage!!’
I concur. We still have 3 more events this season, so check

out the calendar for dates and come on out! You never
know what kind of excitement you might find.
The RoadRally scene is also quite busy. This past weekend, the National RoadRally veterans made their second
visit to the Region to partake in the 2002 version of The
Road Not Taken. Normally, this all gravel TSD is run during the full moon of August. All night. This year, organizers Bob Wakehouse, and Todd and Paula Terp decided
they wanted us to see what we had been missing in the
dark, so they ran it during the new moon of August. All
day. And you know what we were missing? Big exposure!! (think: long way down off the gravel road) The
event was a huge success, as competitors and workers alike
enjoyed the scenery and the drive in the Siuslaw National
Forest. At the end, there was a three-way tie for first place.
The winners were determined to be rally legend Bob
Morseburg (NWR) and Monte Saager (Oregon) with a
score of 37 over 24 controls, using a method called ‘sum of
the squares’. Basically, you square the scores for each leg
and add them. This method rewards consistently low
scores against a team who may have had many zeros, but
also higher scores. Since consistency is part of the game in
RoadRally, this system works well. Congratulations to
Bob and Monte! Check elsewhere in this issue for results.
Oregon Region’s ClubRally program is on the brink of
exploding. We have two new events starting this year that
I want to give you a ‘heads up’ on. In October, we will be
running the inaugural Mt. Hood ClubRally. Simon Levear
is in charge of the event and has done a meticulous job of
making sure everything is in place. This event will serve as
an introductory event for rally to the Mt. Hood National
Forest, and vice versa. This year’s event will be a short (11
miles) Coefficient 1. This is just enough to get a taste of
the great roads we are looking at for the future in that area.
The other event is one I hope you will all be able to attend.
The Oregon Region All-Club Party ClubRally will be on
the 21st of September. We will be using PIR as our stage,
and running the stage 3 times for your viewing pleasure.
Before and after the cars run, they will be set up in a ‘Parc
Expose’: essentially a time for you to come by, look at the
cars, and ask the drivers why they participate in this wacky
motorsport. It should be a good time. We are tentatively
slated to take to the track around 4 in the afternoon, and finish up in time for the BBQ at the end of the day. This will
be the first time in a long time, if ever, that the Oregon
Region All Club Party will truly be an All Club event!
If you have any questions about any of the events we’ve
had, any of the different ‘venues’ within rally, or just about
the sport in general, you can contact me in one of the following ways: via snail-mail at P.O. Box 3511, Tualatin,
OR 97062; via phone at (503) 655-6851; or via email at
[email protected]. See you down the road!

SOLO 2 REPORT
BY: C HUCK JARVIE, S OLO 2 D IRECTOR
E-MAIL: [email protected]
Here we are in mid-August, the weather is hot and
thoughts are turning to Topeka. If you’re not into the
solo scene you may be wondering Topeka?’ Well,
road racing has their Nationals and Runoffs and solo
has Divisionals, National Tours and the Topeka
Runoffs. An interesting thing about solo is that you do
not need to win races and accumulate points to attend
higher level events such as Divisional, Tour, etc. This
year is the first one that requires an entrant to the
Topeka National Runoffs to attend at least one Tour or
Divisional. Each step up from a local event seems to
attract more competitive drivers and provides a new
venue to test our current driving skills, as well as leaning new ones. Just when you think you are going as
fast as humanly possible in a local event, a Divisional
or Tour comes along and brings a little humility into
your life (at least it does mine). July in the Northwest
means it’s time for the Bremerton National Tour. The
site is an airport and the course is always a combination of runways and taxiways, in the middle of a rain
forest. All of which means the weather can be a little
unpredictable. Last year there was rain on about half
of the run groups, but not this year. It was a little cool
in the morning, sunny and warm in the afternoon.
Normally I take the FF up (and get my dose of humility), but this year I had the opportunity to co-drive
(read warm tires for) Tom Kotzian’s Super Stock Z06
Corvette. What a blast! It’s a big difference to step on
the gas with 300+ hp on tap versus only 100.
Unfortunately I could only drive on Saturday and then
had to head for Boise and the week long Porsche
Parade. Oregon Region drivers did well taking 10 trophies for 39 drivers entered. In SS Tom Kotzian took
third place (he did find a substitute tire warmer for
Sunday), Jim Daniels 2nd in ES and Tami Daniels 1st
in ESL. FS was made up entirely of Oregon Region
drivers with Ed LaPlante taking 1st and Gary
Christensen 2nd. Mark Darby took another 1st in GS,
Johnny Spiva 4th in DSP, Jason Braunberger 3rd in
CP, Steve Wynne 3rd in STS, and Pam Eames took
3rd in STSL.
As soon as everyone got back from the Bremerton
Tour it was time for our local events the next weekend.
Saturday (which I missed – still in Boise) was sunny
with a good turn out of 126 drivers. Sunday turned out
a little cloudy with a few rain showers in the afternoon
and only 111 drivers. Bill Baugh continues to learn
his new Z06 and claimed 1st in SS both days. Bob
Sagara took 1st in AS on Saturday with Chuck Spittal
Page 14
September 2002
close behind and taking 1st on Sunday. Doug Barkee
and Dick Lang took 1st in BS and CS respectively
both days. FS was a two family affair both days
between the Mueller’s and Christensen’s Cobras.
Gary Christensen took it on Saturday and Bonnie
Mueller on Sunday. One of the biggest classes both
days was CSP with ten entries and won by Richard
Williams in his 2000 MR2. The places behind
Richard appeared to be up for grabs until the very last
runs. Another interesting class this year has been STS
(Street Touring – Street Tires, not the gummy things
stock classes get to use), which was dominated by
Michael Gatza in his ’97 Integra GSR this weekend
with the rest of the positions up for grabs until last
runs. And then there is SM (Street Mod), which
SCCA apparently intended for small imported sedans
with slightly more than bolt-on options. Imagine a
class with a Camaro Z28, Neon, Mazda 323, and a ’68
Plymouth Valiant. Yes, I said a Valiant. When was
the last time you saw one of those on an auto-cross
course? Did I mention it has a slightly later model 360
cubic inch V8? It took first both days in the capable
hands of Tim Werner. PAX class was won both days
by Jim Daniels in his MR2. Women’s PAX continues
to be dominated by Annie Gill (NW Region) in her
Integra Type R but she barely squeaked by (on raw
times) Donna LaPlante by 0.007 second on Saturday
and Tami Daniels by 0.020 seconds on Sunday.
However, using the class PAX factors made the margins bigger in the end. Still, the ladies class is a real
battle every event.
Chuck Spittal took the AS Class win on Sunday.
That’s all for now. Our next (and last scheduled)
events are September 21 and 22. Saturday, the 21st is
also the date for the ‘All Club Party’ at PIR after all
racing is done for the day. Make sure it is on your
schedule and we will see you there.
LOUD PEDAL
UNKNOWN SPEC RACER
To watch Todd Lamberton dance with Christine on his
wedding day just righted the ship this race season has
been. Talking, interacting and hanging out with the spec
racers that night it dawned on me how lucky we are.
Where else can you find a group of type "A" personalities,
who are basically overachievers, not to mention VERY
COMPETITIVE, who get along and like each other?
Then you log on to specracer.com to underline that fact.
WOW, am I glad I missed the Laguna round! PS to know
Neil Tilbor is to love him (?).
Hands down, the most improved driver this year has
to be John Draneas. Take a bow, counselor. Also props
go out to his "coach," Big Todd Harris, for his growth
as a driver.
So who's the best new blood this year? Trent Miller, Leo
Del Castillo or ??????? The vote is up to you.
Questions: Will John Black bring home the MidOhio bacon and get NORPAC the respect it deserves?
Would John Black be better prepared for Mid-Ohio if
Todd Lamberton had raced all season? Will Chris
load-up next year and travel to Mid-Ohio (as he
promises) to show this division is more than a one
trick pony of driver talent? Stay tuned.
Party gossip would have one believe that Gary
Manchester might just have one more road trip tale in
him for this year.
Attention Dan Miller, you NEED the track time, bring
the SRF out! Trent is waiting.
Consider this, fellow campers, what race group
fields more experience than ours? Mark Z, R.J., Dave
Rice, and others trace their track lineage to the
Renault early '80s years. So no matter where you race
in this race pack pecking order, be prepared to be
schooled. Class is always in session when the spec
racers are on track.
As this is written, the festive party togs await this
Saturday. Todd Butler (the OTHER Todd) is about to turn
the big five-oh and for the second weekend in a row we
the spec's will be there to support our brother in his time
of need. Besides he's buying the refreshments. Report to
follow next month.
As always we are looking for other spec's to guest and
be unknown for a month. Ask around; the original
unknown will find you. So, ask not what Spec racer can do
for you, but what can you do for the Unknown Spec Racer.

NOW HEAR THIS ...
JOHN MARTINSEN, DIRECTOR AREA 13
As the summer winds down it is interesting to look
back at some of the events we have conducted and
to look at some items from the national scene. I will
not be able to touch on all of the great events that
have been conducted in our Regions, but I will take
a look at a few that had some characteristic that I
think is worth mentioning.
I think I will start with the Double National club
race at Pacific Raceways, the former Seattle
International Raceway. How about the changes to
the facility undertaken by the new management?
Pretty good start to a complete overhaul of the facility I would say. And NHRA thought so, too. The
Pacific Northwest still has lots of race fans as indicated by the closing of the gates to spectators at 2
pm on the Saturday of the big NHRA race. The
racetrack was full and would hold no more cars in
the parking lots. So they closed the gates and turned
the incoming spectator’s cars away. Way more cars
than either Pacific Raceways or NHRA expected.
And the Rose Cup club races. Big fields, good
racing, good weather (mostly), and on time. A
great job by all participants, marshals, officials, and weatherman. It
seems like this event improves every
year. It was a fine opportunity to
show off this event to another member of the SCCA Board of Directors,
Bob Schader from Boulder,
Colorado, who was competing in his
Corvette. It is always nice to actually show other BoD members some of
the events that Directors from the
West Coast brag about all the time.
And Bob had some interesting stories
about the tow out to the Rose Cup. I
am sure Bob will remember both the
event and the tow for a long time.
The Solo II National Tour also
caught my attention. Lots of competitors, very well organized, and close
competition. And it is nice to see road
racers competing in solo and solo drivers competing in road races. The purpose-built Solo cars are really something. They corner like they are on
rails or tracks like a modern roller
coaster, absolutely glued to the course.
Competition vehicles that started as
Page 16
September 2002
street vehicles can be pretty interesting as well. And
the trailers hauling the machines – incredible.
Now lets discuss some items from the national
scene. The SCCA at the national level is made up
of four major corporations. The one we all belong
to is SCCA, Inc. It is a not-for-profit corporation
that is parent to two wholly-owned for-profit subsidiaries: SCCA Pro Racing, LTD; and SCCA
Enterprises. And the fourth corporation is the notfor-profit SCCA Foundation. Both Pro Racing and
Enterprises are having pretty good years. In the past
both have obtained start-up or operational loans
from the parent, and both are repaying the loans.
SCCA Enterprises builds the Spec Racer Ford so
popular in Club and Pro Racing. Over 800 of these
cars are in the hands of our members. Enterprises
really knows how to keep "spec" automobiles
within spec. Look for some exciting announcements from SCCA Enterprises about new spec
competition cars. But the Spec Racer Ford has
been racing for 20 years and we expect they will
still be racing 20 years hence.
L OUD P EDAL
FROM A DIRECTOR’S CHAIR
BY CHERYL ‘MINDY’ ALLEN, DIRECTOR 1
I guess there is something about nearing the end
of the race season that lends itself to feeling retrospective. I find myself looking back on my first
term on the Oregon Region Board of Directors,
and marveling at the changes, and how the Region
has grown and matured, in the last four years. The
first time I was a member of the Board, in 1998,
the Region was just looking to start up a Rally program, and, as best I could tell, Solo II felt somewhat like a neglected stepchild.
Thanks to the determination and hard work of Ed
and Donna LaPlante, and after them, Chuck
Jarvie, Solo II has become an integral part of
Oregon Region. If it is possible to be too successful, they may just have achieved that level. They
regularly draw more participants than they have
room to accommodate.
The Rally program is thriving. Kevin Poirer,
Matt and Monika Tabor, and many other folks
deserve huge credit for everything they have
put into the program. The amount of work that
goes into putting on a successful rally is overwhelming. It is easily comparable to what it
takes to put on a road-racing event, but they
make it look simple.
The thing that has impressed me the most this
year, is how the club is operating as one body. It
isn't road-racing, solo II, and rally, operating as
separate entities anymore. It is one unified
group, doing what it takes to make each venue
successful. We have faced many challenges
together this year. We have overcome some of
them, and others we will be working on in the
future. But the important thing is that we are
working on them together.
This year has brought other changes. We will
soon be seeing the Loud Pedal being produced by
a different editor. I am confident that Jeff will do
a great job, as did Doug!
One of the issues the Board has discussed, as
we've gone through this transition, is advertising
rates. Our rates for paid advertising have been
less than the cost of publishing the ads for some
time, and at the end of June postage rates
increased significantly. We appreciate everyone
who has placed paid advertising in the Loud
Pedal, and we recognize that many of you have
done it out of a desire to support the Region. But
we have had to take a hard look at what we are
charging for ads compared to what it is costing
the Region to publish them.
The Board has discussed the topic at length. We
do not look to advertising as a profit making opportunity for the Region, but we also don't feel the
general membership should subsidize the cost. So,
the bottom line is that our rates for paid advertising
will be increasing to match our cost. Please, do not
blame Jeff. It is a business decision made by the
Board, based on what is in the best interest of the
membership of Oregon Region.
Ending this on a personal note, it has been an
awesome season. We've hit some rough spots, and
gone through some serious emotional turmoil.
We've lost dear friends and dedicated supporters
of road racing. Many of us will be dealing with
the loss of Bob Dratwa and Lucy Zanardi for a
long time to come. But we have also seen some
good times. And, perhaps, most importantly, we
have seen courageous people.
Todd Lamberton survived a crash that could
have been devastating. Last Saturday night I
attended his wedding reception. He was on two
feet (even if one of them was in a cast), and talking about how soon he could be back racing
again. There have been others, like Monte
Shelton and Mike Herlihy, who have (almost
miraculously) survived major incidents without
serious injury.
And there is Diana Dance, who met Bob Dratwa
at the races, loved him, and was with him, steadfastly, throughout his battle with cancer. I am
overwhelmed by her courage and the strength of
her love. In many ways I think she epitomizes
what we, as corner workers do. There is nothing
more important to us than safeguarding the people
we love…whether they are racers or workers.
I know there are many others who deserve mention. I've been there and seen what many of you
have been through. There isn't room to mention
all of you, but every one of you has a special place
in my thoughts and my heart.
Now, lets get ready to go racing for the last time
this season, and to celebrate our accomplishments
and love for the sport at the All Club party
