November 2002 Larry Hansen Wins The SCCA President’s Cup The President’s Cup was donated to SCCA by the president of the Coca-Cola company in 1954. The very first presentation was made by President Eisenhower to Bill Spear. The award is given to the driver who, in the opinion of the SOM and Chief Steward, shows ability, competitiveness, and success at the National Championship event. Previous winners include Roger Penske, Jim Hall, Skip Barber, Jerry Hansen, Bobby Rahal, Paul Newman, and Jimmy Vasser. The President’s Cup is the highest award that SCCA can bestow on a driver. Larry Hansen is the first Oregon Region member to win this award. Juicy Gossip Longtime regional racer Phil Blackstone (who graced the cover of the October issue - sort of) had a bit of an “oops” in the PCA race at the U.S. Sports Car Invitational on October 6 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Phil said this about the incident: “Howdy...thanks for your concern. No, it’s not terminal, but we will miss the Sears race at the end of the month. I’m fine and the car is now a winter project for Rothsport, inc. A broken left rear axle at “MACH 1” at the exit of turn 9 does some damage when you do that sudden stop. “ We all wish Phil the best of luck in getting the car put back together, and we’re glad the only damage was to the car! November 2002 LOUD PEDAL Page 5 Save these dates! The ones that have a month listed in the box are the ones where we have a copy of that issue in the region’s historical archive. (That would be a bunch of boxes at Jim and Pattiy Norlin’s house. ) are fabulous and you may be able to identify some of the people in them. Jim and Patty have also done a great job of scanning items for this magazine. I already have enough historic stuff to put something in each issue for the next couple of years! Speaking of which, with the last batch of stuff Patty sent me, I became truly impressed with what a talented and versatile artist we have in Bob Mead. Many of you know him as the pleasant steward you encounter at Black Flag or the end-of-day social, but I’m here to tell you, this man is a world-class artist. I’ll prove it to you over the next few months. “Disk space is cheap. There’s a legend at the bottom showing which issues are known to exist back at Denver (soon to be Topeka- I hope they don’t lose them in the move!) And there’s a notation for the years in which we have copies of all the Loud Pedals. As you can see, we’re missing a bunch of our region’s history. I’ve already put in a request to at least get copies of the ones they have, but that still leaves large gaps. Our history is priceless.” So for that, I need to turn to you, the members of Oregon Region. Specifically, the long-time members of the region who might have a box of old Loud Pedals sitting around somewhere. You don’t have to donate them to the region to be part of this campaign to get the region’s history archived! If we can just borrow your copies of old Loud Pedals, we can scan them and keep them in digital form (probably downloadable from the region website) for the benefit of our membership now and in the future - and you can keep the hardcopy, if you want it. So, if I can persuade you to dig through your attics, bookshelves, filing cabinets, or wherever for old Loud Pedals, please take a look and if you can help us fill these gaps, you’ll be doing a great service for the region and your fellow club members today and for years to come. As a general rule, the older the stuff, the more we need it. This is not limited to Loud Pedals, by the way, but also includes programs from the Rose Cup races or any other events, photographs of region events, old letters and insignia, trophies, dash plaques, supplemental regulations, banquet programs, and just generally whatever you find that might be of interest. Disk space is cheap. Our history is priceless. The point is to get the region’s history recorded in a format that is not subject to deterioration, easily copied, and not easily lost. Jim and Patty have done a great job of organizing all this stuff, and you can see it on display at most Oregon Region Club Racing events. Stop in there and look, because the photos November 2002 LOUD PEDAL Page 9 OREGON REGION SCCA BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES APPROVED DATE: 9/5/2002 PLACE: China Bay Restaurant Beaverton, OR 97005 SEPTEMBER RACE · So far, we have 54 entries for the September single regional. Jeff expressed concern about technical support for the office computers. We need an IT team with technical skills and the time to get into the office. Now that Jeff is employed full time, he isn’t able to get tot the office during the day. Karen will provide Jeff with a key to the office so that he can get in after hours. There are several other Oregon Region embers with the necessary skills that might be willing to assist with technical problems. TREASURER’S REPORT – The PRFA believes that we still owe them money. Holly will talk to Gary when he gets back into town.. LOUD PEDAL – Absent NEW EDITOR NOTES Jeff is working with Community News on templates and formats. Bob Brands and Travis Andrews at Community News have been tremendously helpful, and deserve a huge thank you! Jeff has contacted Patty Norlin for historical materials for a monthly feature. Jill, Mrs. Z.) has called all of the paid advertisers regarding the increase in ad rates. Jeff will work on ad rates for the web site. Discussion followed LOUD PEDAL regarding coordination between the Region’s web site and the Solo II and Rally web sites The deadline for the LP submissions is still the 15th of the month, however it will be extended in September until after our last event. It will be at the Homestead Inn at the Arrowhead Country Club in Molalla. We have nine competitors attending the National RunOffs, including Chuck Jarvie. We have two events scheduled during September. Solo is actively looking for new sites in case they are unable to use the Pro Pits at PIR next season. They have some promising leads. Discussion followed concerning the possibility of combining the Solo II and Road Racing banquets into one event next year. There was general agreement that it was a good idea if we can locate a venue where the awards portion of the banquet could be held in separate rooms. RALLY – Kevin Poirer did a test run on the Wilsonville to Port Orford course, and reports that the roads are fabulous. The event is scheduled for October 12 and 13, with an overnight stay in Port Orford. Registration opens Monday, September 9, and will be limited to 25 entries. The Rally Cross was held on 9/2 at a brand new venue and went exceedingly well. There are two events left this season, September 27 and October 26 (originally scheduled for October 27) Ghouls Gambol is the Friday of that weekend. The Wild West Rally will be this weekend at Shelton, WA. It is an FIA sanctioned event. Many thanks to Jerry Boone for the excellent article in the Oregonian! The Tarmac Zone Rally is scheduled for the weekend of the All Club Party. There will be three stages, each consisting of one lap around PIR. SCCA members will be admitted at no charge, non- members will be charged $5.00. The permits have been signed for the Mt. Hood Club Rally on October 19. They are looking at dates for November 2002 the 2003 Oregon Trail Rally and it looks like it may possibly be July 12th. Mark Wiggenton is hoping the Oregon Trail Rally can start at PIR. DIRECTOR 1 – Cheryl contacted the Chiefs of each of the worker specialties and compiled a list of approximately 75 workers who worked at the events that are difficult to staff. These are the people who are always there when needed. The Board drew the names of 30 workers, who will be offered free tickets to the Road Racing Banquet. It was agreed that the names shall be published in the LP. Back up names were drawn in the event that any of the winners are unable to attend. DIRECTOR II – There is a single candidate for each of the Board positions except Road Racing Director. Holly and Jeff have talked to a number of people about running for the position. Jeff will continue to work on finding candidates for the position of Road Racing Director, as well as additional candidates for the other positions. ROAD RACING DIRECTOR – The job description for Asst. Road Racing November 2002 Director is not finished. David is willing to work with next year’s Road Racing Director. David was contacted by the Canadian Vintage Group VRCBC. They are interested in running with us if they can run without transponders. Holly advised that it would create massive problems for T & S. However, we can rent them transponders if they want to participate in our events. Doernbecher Race on September 28th. It was agreed that Holly will shop for the food, and Greg will coordinate the cooks. There was discussion regarding David’s proposal for a Chief of Worker Services position. It was agreed that the concept is good. David will take the BOD suggestions and do some fine-tuning on the position description. The tow fund checks for the National Run-Offs will be mailed to the drivers who attend, after the event. David presented the names of nominees for the Road Racing Driver Of The Year awards. Holly will try to arrange a user’s meeting to discuss the PIR scheduling requirements for next year. Meeting adjourned at 9:18 PM Respectfully submitted, Cheryl Allen (for Mary) Road Racing Meeting: The Road Racing Committee met to select the dates we will request from PIR for next season’s road racing events. Page 11 Soapbox Running Off At The Mouth By Jim Brassfield It all started with an extremely generous offer by Chris Billings to provide me with airfare to the Runoffs. I of course accepted his offer and was all set to fly to the Runoffs, then I bought a new vehicle. This would allow me to provide other workers a ride to Ohio, so after talking this over with Chris, I decided to drive to Ohio. So, Bernice Stanley, Cathy and Gary Frasier, and I left for Ohio on Sept. 11. Just our way of celebrating Patriot’s Day. We arrived at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on Sunday, Sept. 15, after a great road trip with good friends. We were joined at Mid-Ohio by other Oregon Region and Northwest Region workers; Howard “Duck” Allen, Neil Swanson, Skip and Judy Yocom, Peggy Wilson, Mike Thiessen, and Rich Wixler. Neil was given the B.F. Goodrich Worker of the Year award for Sound Control at the Thursday evening social. Good job, Neil, you make us all proud and represent the region very well. Cathy, Gary, and I all got to work together the seven days we were there, working a new turn each day, all around the track. This afforded us a great view of the track, albeit in small segments. food every night, especially Monday night’s Richland County feast that they put on every year, and all-in-all had a wonderful time. Some thanks need to go out to a couple of Oregon Region members, yet just saying thank you is never enough. Then, all of a sudden, the last checkered flag of the weekend fell and it was over! In keeping with a tradition started by Robert Dratwa, we kept an accurate count of the number of cars that actually took the green flag. At this year’s Runoffs, that number was 629 in all classes. Pretty cool! Altogether much too soon for our liking it was over, but alas, we knew it would end all too soon. Chris Billings, thank you so much for helping to sponsor our trip to the Runoffs, for without your help, the trip would not have happened. That kind of an offer is a rare thing, and I was more than grateful you the offer to me, as there are many workers who were equally deserving of such an offer. Thank you very much, and I hope your next trip there will yield much better results. “We met some wonderful people, made some new friends, saw some of the best racing to be seen anywhere” Howard Allen, thank you for all of your generosity in offering to any and all of us that we could stay in your room and utilize the facilities of the hotel at any time, and for buying dinner for us all on Sunday evening. Thanks, Howard. We left Ohio on Monday, Sept. 23rd for the drive home and talked non-stop across the country about the week of racing we got to be a part of! We had a wonderful time at the Runoffs this year and hope to be able to return to the Olympics of amateur sports car racing next year, hopefully with more folks from this area. If you at all have the time off and the means of getting there, or if you want to help sponsor other workers’ trips to MidOhio, please do not hesitate to do so. It will be time and money well-spent without a doubt. We cheered on all the drivers from our part of the SCCA world with all the enthusiasm ever seen at the Runoffs, (Especially Chris Billings, whose race lasted only one lap), and even one DSR driver (Mike Phillips) whose car sported an ICSCC sticker and happened to stop in our turn when his car broke! The weather was as close to perfect as it could get all weekend long until Sunday afternoon, when it got a bit cloudy and windy, but fortunately for us all - workers, drivers, and crew alike - it did not rain during any of the races. We actually had to put on sweatshirts(!) halfway through the 22nd race of the weekend. It rained in the evening on Thursday, and I mean RAIN! There was a tornado watch on for that area, and one touched down in Indianapolis that evening, only a couple hundred miles away. About as close as I ever want to be to one. We met some wonderful people, made some new friends, saw some of the best racing to be seen anywhere, got fed good Page 12 From L-R: Jim Brassfield, Gary Frasier, and Neil Swanson admire Neil’s award at the Runoffs. LOUD PEDAL November 2002 Things that make you go hmmm? The SCCA Pro Solo car in the Baxters ad belonged to Joe Bovee. Joe works at the Baxter Auto Parts in Vancouver and was asked to have his NYG Neon (a.k.a. Slimer) in the commercial. (We heard from his wife, Rochelle.) The picture of the awesome car with Ben Hockman was a Rolla Vollstedt Indy Car driven by Len Sutton. The only non-road racing recipient of the Region‛s Most Inspirational Driver of the Year award who was at the Tarmac Zone Rally was Paul Eklund. It’s all about road trips, but more about that next month. So, what if they ran the Run-Offs under a full moon? Well, that’s just what happened this year. A qualifying session that ended with all of the T-2 cars impounded was just the start. An American sedan race where the fourth place finisher won, and another race where Chris Billings did not complete one lap for the second year in a row. But Dr. John Blizzard survived to finish 21st. By Sunday morning I think they were on action ninety-something for the AS race. When SportsCar comes be sure to turn to the Fastrack to “get the rest of the story!” Chris Tryon, as he has all year long, quietly went about his job and by the time the flag fell there he was in 6th place in S-2 after third and fourth took themselves out on the last lap. Scott Culbertson tossed everything but the kitchen sink at the competition during the GT-4 race, but under the full moon it just wasn’t meant to be his day. He was a class act as always. Jay and Leslie should be very proud of this young man. The sound out in this race goes to Lans Stout who also quietly went out and took the NORPAC title in GT-4. In the race he had fourth place locked-up until his brakes went south and he visited China Beach on the last lap. Props and sympathy go out to a man who gets very, very much from his racing bucks. With a garage neighbor like P.L. Newman, you knew Mark Jaremko would have a magic week. He was up front as always in FF, but dropped back to fourth place in a last lap incident. His DSR race may have well been the best race of the week! He was in the lead early on, then he fell to 11th spot on a full course yellow restart because he had NOT read the supplemental regulations and didn’t know where the green flag would fall. But in true super star fashion he recovered to beat two-time champion Mike Rupert. NOT bad for only his fourth race in a DSR! So props go out to the NW region’s Steve Zink, our member from Utah in T-1, got best appearing car award from Eagle! His race was good, with a 12th place finish. Lynne Griffiths in SSB did not finish the race. November 2002 Finally, after my sixth trip to the Run-Offs, I could make the closing toast Sunday night. We (all the hard core Oregon troops who did the whole seven days) toasted those who passed over in the last year. Like Bill Salamon who is credited with inventing the flags we use, Tracy Bird a former SCCA executive, Lucy “ Does this region know how to race or what?” National Driver of the Year choice. This is a good time to also give props to Mr. Lee Stohr, who is nothing short of a Rembrandt of racecar design. Zanardi (by Bernice) and Robert Dratwa (by Big Jim). Then we toasted Brian Redmond’s cat, and finally, (after last September) we toasted FREEDOM. Sorry I missed your race in EP on Sunday, Ernie, but I was in town tending to Lori and Roger Eandi’s needs. A 16th place finish at that track is a trophy in itself. It is then, when it is all over, that it sinks in what this week is about and how much work it is for so many people (workers, racers, officials). It really may be more than the Olympics of club racing; it is more like the three rings of the greatest show on club-racing earth. It was a true pleasure and an honor to work for Mr. Bill Bradshaw this year. He is one of the class acts and first class gentlemen of this or any club. “Please, again I beg of you, if you are lucky enough to get Speed Channel, let them know how much you look forward to the SCCA Runoffs every year. ” Duane came, he saw, and he kicked butt, enough said? He just makes it look so easy, right Peggy? (Maybe it was that Wilson woman on his crew<G>). So another GT-2 title comes home to the Northwest. Ho-hum? Not quite. Duane does it with style and class. around the Ramada, with the mattresses on the floor, and doing the laundry before we sat in the hot tub and de-briefed at the end of the day. It is great being there with friends to share the adventure. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you to tune into SpeedTV for two hours every Saturday and Sunday this November and December to see all the action for yourself. Please, again I beg of you, if you are lucky enough to get Speed Channel let them know how much you look forward the SCCA Runoffs every year. A big part of the Run-Offs story is about the road trip. Just ask the Frasiers, Bernice and Big Jim Brassfield. Half of the fun is in the trip getting there and back. Good times sitting LOUD PEDAL Another good thing about this trip was the chance to meet the new gang that is going to Topeka, and know that SCCA will continue to be in good hands. A big tip-of-the-helmet goes to Sue Roethel, not just for tuning in here for a read, but for being the first lady of this club. You will be missed! So, here is the bottom line for Oregon Region this year: Duane wins in GT-2, Scott starts on the front row and finishes on the podium in GT-4, Lee Stohr designs a front row car in FF and wins in DSR, Neil Swanson is National Worker of the Year in sound, and Larry Hansen’s podium finish in GT-3 results in the Presidents Cup. Does this region know how to race or what? And finally, a special tip-of-the-helmet goes out to Roger Eandi. Get well soon. We need the “Poobah” to get better. Page 15 Solo 2 Report By: Chuck Jarvie, Solo 2 Director email: [email protected] It’s October and it is just now sinking in that our season is over. After all the sun is shining, it’s nice and warm and we are getting ready for a November banquet. Seems like we should be running events until the snow flies and/or it rains cats and dogs. Truth is, some of us are getting a little older and we burn out a little sooner each season and take longer to get going for next season. We finished up our last two events in September at PIR with decent attendance, i.e. 128 on Saturday and 118 on Sunday. Both days were dry, sunny and warm, with the ‘All Club Party’ on Saturday night. An excellent way to end the season. A number of class champions were decided on this last weekend. Being of not so sound mind and not possessed by a photographic memory, I can only tell you this is the case by the screams of certain competitors and their attempts at football end zone celebrations. Just a few highlights: In AS Chuck Spittal won both days over Bob Sagara. I suspect Chuck is driving with just a tad more confidence based on his performance at Nationals in Topeka. Doug Barkee continued to dominate BS in his BMW M3 and Dick Lang swept CS in his Miata. On Saturday, Gus Hall and his daughter Nicole came out in his ’73 914 for one of their rare visits. Despite a slight (does an adjusting nut falling off a rocker Page 16 Solo 2 Report arm qualify as slight?) mechanical delay Nicole pipped dad by 0.031 seconds. Gus really needs to compete more often to keep that car in shape. HS drew nine entries on Saturday and ten on Sundays compared to sometimes only one or two. They put on a good show with the Mercedes C240 of Gary Hays winning both days and Greg Beuchler’s C230 coming in second. Right behind those German things was Larry Fenley’s ’89 Toyota Pickup. Hartman took mens, Sunday was Tom Kotzian, and Heather Howe took womens on both days. On Saturday we had an accident that resulted in a very damaged car that went into the concrete pit wall. The driver is OK, the car has probably seen it’s last days. I think that we, as the solo community, are usually unwilling to talk (in print) about these incidents and I don’t think that is a healthy attitude. “Unlike road racing where the track always goes in the same place, every time you run solo courses are always different. ” Now can you imagine the possibility of having a bad day driving your Mercedes and ending up behind that pickup? The boys in Stuttgart would not be happy. In SM Tim Werner’s all conquering (well, sort of) hot rod ’68 Plymouth Valiant got edged out on Saturday by Erik VanDyke’s Neon by a tenth of a second. Tim recovered on Sunday to win by two full seconds, thereby showing that cubic inches and horsepower can substitute for superior handling. I admit I’m assuming the superior handling statement because I used to drive a Valiant and cars have improved since then (I think). In PAX I have not looked at the point standings to have any clue as to who was leading but on Saturday Chris LOUD PEDAL Unlike road racing where the track always goes in the same place every time you run solo, courses are always different. On a race track we learn through experience where the danger areas are and, as drivers, can drive accordingly. On a solo course we only get to walk it once or twice and only get three or four single lap runs at it. In solo you don’t really know the potential hazards until you arrive at the scene, at speed, with adrenalin pumping, and then it can be too late to save yourself. What I want to point out is that we can become complacent and ignore potential problems if we don’t talk about incidents, hazards, etc. and learn from them. November 2002 Solo 2 Report - Continued We have learned from experience, and this incident reinforces, that we wear seatbelts and helmets for a reason! It is up to all of us who design the courses, walk the courses, drive the courses, etc to be willing to ask questions as to whether or not something about a course is safe and/or needs to be changed. Just making a course design faster is not the right answer. I like the adrenalin rush as much as anyone (ask me sometime about hitting 106mph in my old S2000 on an auto-x course) but the risk of incidents like this one (which can damage the viability of our sport) needs to be taken into account by everyone who participates. I had some responsibility for approving the course used on Saturday and did not forsee any problem but cars and drivers don’t always do what we expect. They are (yes, both) human after all. End of safety steward rant. Lastly, I think this will be my last column as Solo2 Director. I have had fun doing this for the last couple of years but have to admit I won’t miss the editor’s deadlines. [Oh yeah, right. I get it. Blame the victim. Sure. -- JZ] I sincerely hope my tenure has met your expectations and that I and the solo committee have led you all down a good path. See you next season. Among other events, he mentioned a TSD rally to Port Orford. My ears immediately perked up. Being a member of Team Continental as well as Oregon Region, I spent several wonderful weekends in Port Orford, working the TC races there, the last of which was in 1998. I fell in love with the town and the people, and I’ve often wished I had a good reason to go back for another visit. Apparently “We were flying by the seat of our pants” Holly Remington was feeling the same way, as she quickly suggested that there might be some members of Team Continental interested in running the rally. Holly and I decided on the spot that we would enter as a team. In the next few weeks there was a lot of discussion, and we ended up with four teams from TC who were willing to take on the challenge; none of us with more than the most rudimentary knowledge of TSD rallying. And so, on to the story of “The View from the Road Not Taken” or “Car 24 WHERE are you?” It is nearing 8 AM on Saturday morning as Holly and I pull into Wilsonville Memorial Park. The sky is crystal blue, without a cloud in sight. There is a mid-October chill in the air as we get out of Holly’s Honda Pilot, but with the sun just starting to peek over the tree tops, we know that it is going to warm up quickly. It is going to be a perfect day for a great adventure. Several cars have arrived at the parking lot ahead of us, and we quickly spot Greg Bell and Bob Smethers driving Win Casey’s Audi, as well as Donna Battin and Karen McCoy. Three of the four intrepid Team Continental novice teams have arrived. Teresa and Scott Hanken, the fourth TC team, have not yet arrived. Matt Tabor, Kevin Poirier, and Ben Bradley are busy hauling cartons out of their vehicles, and setting up equipment. We wander around looking at the “real” rally vehicles that have assembled in the parking lot, and meeting our fellow competitors. Everyone is very friendly and they quickly make us feel welcome. I am feeling some serious butterflies of doubt. Once I decided I would try the rally, I thought it would be a good idea to find out how it all works. There were a lot of good resources on the internet, but after hours of studying such Page 20 things as main road determinants and traps, I found myself more confused than enlightened. The only bright spot that I could see was the fact that both Holly and I know where Port Orford is; surely no matter how lost we got, we could somehow find our way there. (The bliss of ignorance!) Matt and Kevin notice our nervousness and reassure us that this is really a very simple rally. They promise us that we’ll do okay. Holly and I had done some advance planning and figured we would at least need a stop watch, an accurate digital watch, and a hand held calculator. In short order, we discovered that neither of us has a good digital watch, my stop watch is in my turn bucket which is in a truck in Phoenix (that’s another story!), and the only calculator we could come up with was a desk model that had to be plugged in. We settled for a small notepad and a couple of pens. As the drivers meeting starts, I look around and notice that everyone else has a clipboard - darn, why didn’t we think of that? The drivers meeting is excellent. Kevin goes over the instructions with us in detail. He and the real rally teams are infinitely patient with us as we ask about the acronyms. CAST means “change average speed to”. Everyone laughs as I ask what the heck SOL means, but he explains that it is “sign on the left”. He then explains that the start time for each stage is “time zero”, and the start time for each team is time zero plus their car number. He and Matt pass out magnetic numbers and SCCA Rally signs for each side of our vehicles. Ours is “24” but they explain that we are really car #14, the 14 signs were lost on a previous rally. As the meeting ends, Teresa and Scott finally pull into the parking lot. I worry that they have missed the instructions, but Holly and I are feeling pretty confident that we are prepared for what is ahead of us. We have confirmed that our cell phones match the official rally time, and we decide that we will rely on them to keep us on time. No matter that the official time is kept in tenths of a second and our cell phones only give us hour and minutes. It is the best we can do. We leave Wilsonville exactly on time and take a very short trip down I-5. Then it is off on side roads. The rally directions are written so that we are looking for landmarks every 2 to 3 tenths of a mile. We realize very quickly that our actual geographic location is unimportant as long as we are on the mark with the instructions, and staying on top of those is intense, non-stop business. We also realize early on, as we get to an instruction LOUD PEDAL that says “CAST to 41 at “speed 15”, that just maintaining the posted speed limit is not going to work. The rally course is taking us over twisty back roads with lots of low speed corners - the trick is driving very fast on the straight stretches to make the average speed - and constantly monitoring the odometer. The odometer is another story. It only takes us a few miles to realize that the odometer on the car is not accurate. The mileage is creeping up over the official mileage. The farther we go, the greater the difference. As navigator, I am reading Holly the course directions, while I’m trying to calculate the increasing difference in our mileage and add it on to the directions ahead of time so I can give her accurate instructions…all the while bouncing around as we speed around corners and over hills. Things were going well for us through the first half of Saturday. But during the last TSD stage, before the lunch transit, things changed. We found ourselves on a one-lane road climbing the side of a mountain. The road was a series of hairpin turns, with a sheer drop off on driver’s left and a precipice on driver’s right. After just a few minutes we were both wondering if we were on course. The road was barely one lane, and strewn with large rocks. The next instruction told us to look for a “1 mile” sign - which wasn’t there. But there was no place to turn around, so we kept climbing. The next instruction was for a “2 mile” sign - and there it “A traffic ticket is an automatic DQ for the event” was, matching the mileage exactly. Okay, so it was hanging upside down, but the mileage was exactly where it should be. So we kept on. The following instruction told us to bear right - and once again the mileage was right on target and there was a place to bear right, but it was two dim tire tracks headed straight up the side of the mountain. At that point common sense took over and we decided to stay on the paved road. Fast forward. As we came back down the mountain, after finding the only turn-around spot when the pavement ran out, we looked out across a wide valley several hundred feet below us, and saw a gently curving road. Could that be where we were supposed to be? Our cell phones had gone into “analog roam” long before, so we had no idea of the accurate time. We were flying by the seat of our pants. The end of the TSD portion of the first day is just north of Bandon. Holly and I are November 2002 From a Director’s Chair - cont. exhausted. We cruise down into town with the sun in our eyes. Holly hits the brakes as she sees a sign that says “30 mph”. At the same time she observes a police officer pulling his radar gun into the window of his cruiser. He pulls out into traffic, just behind us. Karen and Donna are in front of us, and Bob and Greg in front of them. As we get into downtown Bandon, the lights on the police car come on, and Holly pulls over to the curb. A traffic ticket is an automatic DQ for the event. Fast forward again. We finally make Port Orford at 6 PM. We check into the Castaway Motel, and head back into town for a tuna barbecue at the Community Center. Later we meet up with some of the real rallyists at Paula’s Bistro. There is a lot of “bench-racing”, exchanging the stories of our day. Paul Eklund is very generous, sharing many tips for improving our scores. Greg is paying close attention, and I’m doing my best to eavesdrop. We are up early again on Sunday morning, ready for another long day. Things go better for us on Sunday. Our times are good. The last TSD leg is pretty easy. The land is flat and the only challenge is staying alert as the instructions go to every two or three miles instead of tenths of miles. We end up in Albany. Ben and Kevin crunch the numbers on their computer to get our scores. Howard calls me from Phoenix to ask how it has gone. I tell him that we won’t need to clear a space on the mantle for another trophy. But I am wrong. Holly and I get the trophy for most points scored (LOL). Teresa and Scott finished 4th overall. I don’t think they will be running in the Novice Class again! And, best of all, Holly and I can’t wait to try it again! We learned a lot, and I figure we have a secure spot in Novice Class for a long time to come. And if you are interested in the two big questions -- “Did we get lost?” and “Did we get a ticket?” see Holly’s column. Vintage Loud Pedal Monte Shelton ran some of the funniest ads in the 60‛s. This one above ran in 1966 and according to Monte was a joke on one of his friends. The “secret” of getting along with your in-laws was revealed in a later ad - stay tuned! November 2002 LOUD PEDAL Page 21 By: Anonymous Unknown Spec Racer email: [email protected] It was a cold rainy day in October, as I stood in my garage and looked at what had become my obsession. My Spec Racer Ford and I just finished our first season of SCCA competition driving. And to think it all started out so innocently. As a young boy I took an immediate interest in racing. Whether it was listening to the Indy 500 on the radio, looking through motorsport magazines at the exploits of Formula One drivers, or witnessing firsthand the sights and sounds of drivers pushing their cars to the limits at the local amateur race, I dreamed of the day that I too would become a race car driver. As years passed the dream that once burned so brightly began to slowly dim as I gained the new responsibilities of college, a career, marriage and children. Yet the flame still flickered, and after many years of dreaming about racing I knew what I had to do: become a race car driver. After a period of several months of exhaustive research, I chose to pursue my racing career from behind-the-wheel of a Spec Racer Ford. The Spec Racer Ford is a one design, fixed specification car that is relatively affordable to purchase and maintain. It is the most popular class in SCCA with events held at race tracks across the country. With the cars being identical, tight competition abounds with driver skill being the deciding factor of the race. What more could a budding race car driver ask for? So I enrolled in a professional race school and set out with a new helmet in hand wondering how I would compare to the other future racers. After four days of intensive drills and lapping sessions, I found that I had a lot to learn, like many other “natural born race car drivers.” Becoming a quick, skillful race car driver was going to take a tremendous amount of seat time and effort on my part. Then again, nobody said this dream was going to be easy. Racing in the Spec Racer Ford class is not for the faint of heart. Ultra competitive racing Page 22 Unknown Spec Racer with 20 or more cars going wheel-to-wheel leaves its share of bruised egos among the rookie drivers. This isn’t anything like hotrodding on city streets or taking part in a car club track day. These drivers are serious about their racing and the front runners are very FAST! They circulate the track at lap times I can only dream about at this stage of Heart pounding race starts, drifting through a corner on the edge of adhesion, drafting within inches of another car, late braking passes, keeping my foot firmly on the gas pedal when my brain is telling me to lift, and driving through the rooster tails of spray in a rain storm, make racing the most challenging sport I’ve ever competed in. “Having the fast time of the day at Malibu Grand Prix a few years ago doesn’t seem like much of an accomplishment anymore” my career. Having the fast time of the day at Malibu Grand Prix a few years ago doesn’t seem like much of an accomplishment anymore; finishing in the top ten of a Spec Racer Ford race would be. With each test day and race weekend I continued to improve steadily, driving faster and more consistent lap times, while learning that passing another race car with equal power and the same chassis is not an easy task. Even if the car in front of me was a few tenths of a lap slower, it was difficult setting up the opportunity to pass, let alone making the pass stick. However, my racecraft continued to improve with every race. Setting a personal record lap time, finishing further up the grid than I started, waving to corner workers in appreciation on the cool off lap, sharing a story with a fellow driver moments after a hard fought battle, and receiving congratulations from family and friends, make racing the most rewarding sport I’ve ever participated in. As I turn out the light in my garage, I realize I have a long way to go before I’ll be a veteran race car driver. But in one season of racing I’ve certainly come a long way in a short time. I’m living the dream. We have an incredible sense of family throughout all 3 of our venues. I should learn not to be surprised, but, I am always so impressed with our membership. I am filled with pride to see Rally, SoloII and Club Racing getting along so well, sharing in competition and the love of motorsports. While my first love is Club Racing, it brings me great joy to know that my personal mission of bringing us together is for the most part, a success. We’re a strong Club because of our Unity! I took part in my first Rally Adventure. See Mindy’s article about all our trials and tribulations. My contribution is, yes we were lost. No - we didn’t get a ticket for going 50 in a 30 mph zone, that’s all I have to say about this issue, on the grounds my answers may incriminate me. Needless to say, I just had a terrific time. It was an incredible experience, and I intend to do many more. I can’t believe how intense the TSD miles were. The intensity surpassed only by the beauty of this beautiful state we are lucky enough to call home. As I write this article, I’m on the telephone with a NorPac Division Conference call. The Division Board is working hard on the Subaru 2003 NorPac Convention in Reno, at the Atlantis Hotel & Casino. The Convention will be from January 10 - January 12, 2003. It’s a great way to get together with friends from all the Regions way out Left. The Atlantis will prove to be a fun Hotel. Most of the venues will have National office representation. In fact, Steve Johnson, Kurt Spitzner and Howard Duncan were all on hand last year. I know Howard has confirmed his participation as of this time, as well as an SCCA U Instructor. I have no reason to believe that Steve and Kurt won’t be there as well. It’s a great opportunity to have some one on one time with those folks. There are many topics on the Agenda that will prove valuable to those who attend. Its also, a way to get some regular topic information without going all the way to the National Convention. Earlybird Registration closes on December 7, 2002. See the ad in this publication or follow the link from http://www.oregonscca.com. The NorPac Happenings writer, Tom Masterson would like to receive information about accomplishments of the Oregon Region or its members. If you have something noteworthy and would like it to be included in his SportsCar article his deadline is usually the 1st or last Monday of the month. He can be emailed at [email protected]. As much as your officials try, we sometimes miss a lot of interesting goings on. My Rally buddy, Mindy and I are off to an all SCCA Pro Racing weekend at Virginia International Raceway. We intend to work turns all three days of the event. This is a beautiful facility, one I have wanted to visit for a number of years. Flatout Racing is taking a few Spec Racer Fords back, and so we figured it was a good excuse to be there to watch over our drivers. I’ve had some discussions with SCCA Pro Racing about coming back to Portland for an event. So I’ll look those folks up while I’m there. Also, I’m very intrigued by the unique capitalization that reopened VIR into the only motorsports country club. Elsewhere in this newsletter you’ll find an ad for the “We Can” meeting on November 8, 2002. November 2002 LOUD PEDAL I hope you can make it. This will be an informal General Membership meeting, as well as an opportunity for a bunch of clubs to get together to facilitate a self-driven PIR User Group. PIR management has told me in the past, that it would be easier for them to receive one request rather than a multitude of essentially the same requests for improvements, etc. In addition, I’d like to explore building our own multipurpose Club facility. As you can guess, the theme of this meeting is we can do it - and I truly believe we can! I hope we can brainstorm and build enthusiasm for this type of venture. I believe that the Oregon region can be a leader in this vision, with the help of all our local clubs, each of you, our big brother to the South and our SCCA, Inc parents - We can do it! I believe with a sound business plan, a firm capitalization plan, a generous environmental plan and “We’re a strong Club because of our Unity!” the right Chairman all the clubs in our area could hold an interest in this facility. My desire to start thinking about this project is not because we want to give up racing at PIR. Just the opposite, the Oregon Region has called PIR home for 40 years. We hope to support Club Racing at PIR for at least another 40 years. The Oregon Region is not just a Road Racing club. We have two other venues, who are growing significantly each year in not just their membership, but, this is key, in their participation. A new facility in the Pacific Northwest can be contemplated to allow for the needs of Rallycross, SoloII, Performance Rally school, Car Control clinics, etc. The possibilities are endless. The Western States Rally Championship (WSRC) today selected seven rallies in 2003 that will earn points towards its year-end championship. This inaugural season includes three events in the Pacific northwest, three in southern California, and one in Colorado. All seven are part of the Sports Car Club of America’s (SCCA) “ClubRally” program. The championship will be decided based on the best six out of seven results. The WSRC recognizes five SCCA ClubRally classes and will award year-end trophies to the top drivers and codrivers for each of these categories. The full 2003 calendar of points-paying events is as shown in the inset box. While some the dates are still tentative, they aren’t expected to shift more than a week or so in one direction or another. As such, we plan to select different venues in subsequent seasons. This will not only help out all the organizers that host the western rallies, it will give the racers a more interesting mix of roads and different challenges each year.” He added that the series is deliberately “starting small” so it can manage its growth. “It’s possible that in 2004 the championship will be based on the best six out of eight or nine rallies instead of seven.” More information about the inaugural season, including the rules and series charter, can be found at http://www.wsrally.org. If you’d like to offer financial support to the series or have other questions, contact John Dillon via e-mail: chairman @ wsrally.org. Dear members of the SCCA Oregon Region, First I would like to say Thank You to Skip Yocom, your Deputy Executive Steward for his kind invitation in asking me to come up and play with Oregion Region. Then I would like to Thank all the Stewards, Chiefs, and workers for making me feel so welcome. Oregon Region is made up of some of the best members in the country. (Of course, some came from my home region: San Diego.) The racing was great and I will say you all run a few classes, but that is what makes it fun to come and play. I have participated in Oregon Region events in the past and it was always a pleasure. Phil and I hope we will get invited back. Thanks again for your kindness and a FUN weekend. Sincerely, Marge Binks Chairman of the Stewards Oregon Region Regional Race September 22, 2002 We Get Letters! A Note from Robert Dratwa’s Mother My family and I would like to thank you all for your representation at the memorial service and the beautiful floral arrangements from Team Continental and Oregon Region SCCA, and also for the copy of your newsletter that so honored my son Robert. It helped us all to know that he will be remembered by so many. Sincerely, Barbara Chalmers (Dratwa) “Oregon Region is made up of some of the best members in the country.” - Marge Binks Tarmac Zone Rally Brought UsTogether An Open Letter To The Club: The Oregon Rally Group extends its heartfelt thanks to the Oregon Region SCCA for all the help and resources in making our club rally exhibition possible. With all the help from the entire board, organizers and course workers this could not have happened as smoothly as it did. It was positive to see the attention we attracted and also the renewed interest some of our people have in devoting time to volunteering at road racing events. In my mind the fine point to the day was to help two factions of the same club to come together and start to understand and utilize one another more frequently. I believe we accomplished that. If there is anything that the Oregon Rally Group as a whole can do to help enhance one or more of your race weekends please do not hesitate to call upon us. Likewise we hope to see some of your people come and enjoy driving our rallycross events in their street cars and trucks. (since it is run/worked like Solo II, we do not need pure workers.) Any help that can be lent to our Oregon Trail Rally, a National ProRally event; or our Mt. Hood Club Rally would be welcomed. A quick concensus of our competitors and volunteers this weekend shows that the rally exhibition would be welcomed next year by our group. Tarmac is such a rarity for us. This annual renewal of solidarity between our groups could only help to strengthen our club. OREGON REGION SCCA POSITION DESCRIPTION Chief of Specialty: Chief, Race Workers Services IV. Responsibilities I. A) Providing food and drink for all Race Workers at Oregon Region Road Racing Events. Introduction: In May of 1997 the Oregon Region SCCA Board of Directors established a program to benefit Workers with funds provided by driver support. The Oregon Region entry forms were modified to provide an area where drivers could contribute monies to a worker fund. The monies collected in this manner were intended to directly benefit Race Workers through products and services used in connection with Oregon Region events. These driver contributions were not to be used for the Membership Dues Program. It was intended that the Oregon Region Activities Chairperson manage this program with the assistance of two (2) additional race worker volunteers. The establishment of a Chief of Race Workers Services is intended to supersede that management program. The Race Worker Driver - Support[ed]Program, as an integral part of the Oregon Region SCCA Race Worker Award Program, is hereby amended. II. Purpose: The purpose of establishing a Chief of Race Workers Services is to provide a mechanism by which Oregon Region Race Workers are provided with the necessary tools to perform their function and a system to reward Race Workers for service to the region that is extraordinary and which brings credit to their Specialty and the Oregon Region. In establishing this position, it is the intent of the Oregon Region Board of Directors to create a position that not only has the responsibility for providing the services necessary for the Race Workers to fulfill their duties, but to create a position that has the authority to provide rewards to individual Race Workers for exemplary service. III. Amendment to Race Worker-Driver Support[ed]] Program: The Race Worker - Driver Support[ed] Program is to be amended by the establishment of a Specialty, Race Worker Services, with a Chief and Page 26 The Chief of Race Worker Services will be responsible for: B) Providing weather protection for Race Workers at Oregon Region Road Racing Events. Examples include, but are not limited to: Gift Certificates Travel Allowances(mileage and lodging) for out of Region Road Racing Events Flags T-Shirts Note: Rewards provided through D) will be funded through the Race Worker - Driver Support[ed] Program. V. Appointment: The Chief of Race Worker Services shall be an appointed position and the Oregon Region Board of Directors will consider the recommendations of the Race Operations Manager and the Road Racing Director. The Oregon Region Board of Directors LOUD PEDAL shall have the final authority to appoint the Chief of Race Worker Services. The appointment shall be for one year and the appointment shall be reviewed annually by the incoming Board of Directors. VI. Funds in the Race Worker - Driver Support[ed] Program as of January 1, 2003 will be made available to the Chief of Race Worker Services to fund rewards for exemplary service. Rewards made for exemplary service under the Race Worker - Driver Support[ed] Program shall be made at the sole discretion of the Chief of Race Worker Services. The value of a reward for exemplary service shall not exceed $200.00 and no Reward shall be given if the balance in that Program falls below $2,000.00 The Chief of Race Worker Services shall include this Specialty’s budget as a part of Race Operations budget for fiscal year 2003 and for each fiscal year thereafter. The Chief of Race Worker Services shall report to the Oregon Region Board of Directors each reward for exemplary service and shall account to the Board of Directors of the Oregon Region all expenditures under the Race Worker - Driver Support[ed] Program. VIII. The Oregon Region Board of Directors Caveat: The Oregon Region Board of Directors has enacted this revision to the Race Worker Award Program and the Amendment to the Race Worker - Driver Support[ed] Program in order to continue development of a beneficial program for Oregon Region Race Workers. As with any program, there may be issues that the Board of Directors has not foreseen. The board of Directors of the Oregon Region SCCA, at it’s sole discretion, reserves the right to make a final determination on all issues associated with this program. All decisions of the Oregon Region SCCA Board of Director shall be final. Respectfully Submitted; David E. Isselhard Road Racing Director Oregon Region, SCCA August, 2002 November 2002 Objects In The Mirror Objects In The Mirror May Be Closer Than they Appear By: Dave Isselhard, Road Racing Director email: [email protected] This time of the Fall, I look in the Mirror and I remember October of 1958. What a great year and what a great time of my life. I had just accepted a civilian position after my tour as a Naval Officer. Having qualified for Command at Sea and after two tours in the Atlantic and two in the Pacific, I had resigned my Regular U.S. Navy Commission and become a member of the Naval Reserve. But why was this a great time of my life? I had discovered Sports Cars and purchased a one year old (1957) Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spyder from European Sports Cars in San Diego. race) lodgers at the motel, and we drove to the track. Bill “packed” the valve springs to raise the maximum RPM from 5750 to 6500. I checked the tire pressures (the same tires that we had on the car driving to Santa Barbara and on which we intended to drive home ) and polished the car. We did remove the windscreen. We did not have to remove the muffler. We did that before we left San Diego. Boy, was that a loud trip to Santa Barbara. Bill put on his borax soaked white coveralls, a motorcycle helmet and goggles and went “But why was this a great time of my life? I had discovered Sports Cars“ During the purchase I made a friend. Bill Rustad, the Service Manager at European Motors owned and raced an Arnolt-Bristol Bolide (a ’55 if I remember correctly) and both drove the car as a daily driver and, as Member of the SCCA, raced the car in either B Production or C Production. The chassis was designed by “Wacky” Arnolt of Chicago and the body was, I believe, a Bertone design. What a combination: American Chassis, British Motor and Italian Coachwork! I knew something about what it took to make a car handle and Bill asked me to “crew” for him. The inline 6 hemihead, triple carbed Bristol motor (with 18 push rods) was a complete mystery to me. I was used to Lycoming 6, Ford Flathead V-8 and Mercury OHV V-8 motors. It was sometime later that I learned that the Inline 6 Bristol was originally a 1938 BMW design that was “awarded” to the Bristol Aeroplane Company in Merry Old England as a part of the “spoils of war”. My first race as a member of Bill’s Crew was at the old Santa Barbara track. Bill and I drove (no trailers) the Arnolt-Bristol up to Santa Barbara on Friday evening, stayed overnight at a motel, where about 30 other Drivers and their Crew lodged. Early Saturday morning, after we washed the Arnolt-Bristol, every one rolled their cars to the street so as not to wake other (non- November 2002 out to practice. I realized that the “Crew” was me! I saw the GCR for the first time (I believe it was about 30 pages long) and actually read it. To be a member of the SCCA one had to be sponsored or nominated and one “Black Ball” could be the cause of your application being denied. Car to car contact was NOT allowed. I do not recall where Bill placed. He finished with the car in good shape and we drove it home. The next year I was a spectator or Crew at every Sports Car Race I could find, Santa Barbara, Holtville and Riverside, the Palace of Speed. Yeah, I was hooked. The only question was: How could I afford to get into Competition myself? But that is another story! But enough of my “MIRROR”. 2002 has been a great year. It is time for me to let another have a chance to be the Road Racing Director. As I advised in my last column, thank you for the opportunity to serve all of you, Drivers, Chiefs and Workers, and to serve the Oregon Region. I hope to see all of you at the Awards Banquet where I can thank you personally. By the time that you read this, you will have elected a new Road Racing Director. He will need your support and just as you gave me your assistance, please assist the new RRD. I will give whatever support and assistance that is requested of me. Most of all, thanks for “Looking in the Mirror” and taking care of each other out there! [Ed Note: Dave’s Race Worker Services program for 2003 is described on the opposite page.] Bonnie Aarseth and Bill Carr are among the many SCCA members who take care of us on track - be sure to give them a wave at the end of your session.
