Dear Friends of Isabel Bloom,
It is with great enthusiasm that I welcome you to our
2012 Isabel Bloom catalog!
I’m writing today, not only as the sculptor for the
company, but also as a new co-owner, along with my
2 long-time friends and co-workers, Cathy Nevins and
Bill Barrett.
I know Isabel would be proud. She herself was both
artist and business owner, and I was fortunate to learn
under her tutelage. Beginning in 1986 and until her death
in 2001, Isabel and I shared the role of Bloom sculptor.
Her simple straightforward approach to sculpting children
and creatures of nature still inspires me, as I add many new
sculptures to the line each year.
I write today, full of anticipation as well as reflection;
looking back on how far we’ve come since Isabel, as a young
child, created that first sculpture out of Mississippi mud
while on a family picnic, and eagerly looking forward to
many wonderful years ahead.
Cathy, Bill and I feel very privileged to be at the helm of
this great company, with it’s 70 plus passionate employees,
who take such pride in what they do. We feel thankful to
serve our loyal customers and we welcome those who are
just discovering us.

The Story of the Blue Bag
Sculptor Donna Young, Controller Cathy Nevins and Operations Director Bill Barrett (pictured
right to left) have become the proud new owners of Isabel Bloom
headquartered in Davenport, Iowa.
The sale to the three long-time employees represents a return to Isabel
Bloom’s original roots.
“Donna has been the company’s sculptor for 26 years. Bill and I have worked here
collectively for 30 years. The three of us, who are certainly not new to Isabel Bloom, are
passionate about the company and Isabel’s legacy,” Cathy says. “In many ways, we are
taking the company back to its original roots.”
The Isabel Bloom sculpture line was created 60 years ago by regionalist Davenport
artist Isabel Scherer Bloom. Isabel studied at both the Chicago Art Institute and the
Vogue School of Fashion and Design, and learned how to carve limestone sculpture
at Grant Wood’s Stone City Art Colony, Stone City, Iowa, in 1932 and 1933. Wood’s
regionalist influence is evident in Bloom’s designs, as well as the designs of contemporary Bloom sculptor and protégé Donna Young.
“Isabel was my mentor for 15 years,” Donna says. “I learned her technique, her
philosophy of design and her production methods. She encouraged me to develop my
own style, which I did. Although my style tends to be more realistic, I continue to
incorporate her simple, stylized design approach.”
Bloom production methods, as featured on page 3, haven’t changed much either.
“Every sculpture is crafted start to finish by hand,” Donna says. “We use a
larger concrete mixer than the little red one Isabel had, but we mix concrete the same
way. We make our molds, pour the concrete, and finish our pieces just like Isabel, one
at a time.”
“We are a traditional, home-grown Midwest company with Midwest values,”
operations Director Bill Barrett says. “Our customers are very loyal to us and to our
brand. Because of this, our local concrete line has always been entirely crafted here,
both for our Showrooms and for some local gift stores. In fact, we offer tours for our
customers to see the handcrafting process for themselves.”
Donna, Cathy and Bill begin their partnership with a new showroom in West
Des Moines. The Isabel Bloom Valley West Mall showroom opened October 1, 2011.
Three other Isabel Bloom showrooms are located in Davenport’s Northpark Mall, the
Village of East Davenport, and in downtown Moline, Illinois. We invite you to come

When Isabel first opened shop in 1951
in the Village of East Davenport, she, like
many artists, was a recycler (long before it
was in vogue!). So when a customer made a
purchase, Isabel would carefully wrap the
concrete sculpture in several layers of newspaper and place it in a recycled bag; one of
many that she’d saved from the grocery store,
or other shopping trips.
Thirty years later, when Isabel sold the
company to long-time customers Bernadette
Murphy and Barbara VanVooren this was
still the packaging method. Bernie and Barb
carried on with this for a while, but didn’t
like the way the newsprint made everyone’s
hands turn black when wrapping, so
switched to buying newsprint from a local
paper company. As business grew, the supply
of recycled bags became hit or miss. Bernie
and Barb went to a local packaging company
and asked if they had any leftover bags or
overruns from other jobs that they’d be
willing to sell, in order to keep costs down.
This was kind of fun, because they never
knew what color they would get! For a while,
the bags were bright fuchsia! When the next
bag order came in, they were a navy blue.
Everyone liked the new color and it’s been
the color choice ever since.
Soon customers began asking for gift
wrap, so ribbon was tied to the blue bags.
Today customers like picking out the color
of the ribbon; matching it to wedding colors,
seasonal colors or their favorite school
colors. But the Isabel Bloom signature bag
remains blue.

OUR FOUNDER
ISABEL BLOOM
Born in 1908, Isabel Scherer began sculpting with clay as a
young child. Creative and curious she briefly studied painting at
the Art Institute of Chicago before studying sculpture at the
Stone City Art Colony under American Master, Grant Wood in
the early 30’s. It was there she met a gifted artist, John Bloom
who would later become her husband in 1938.

In the late 40’s and 50’s, Isabel began experimenting with her

Victorian garden sculpture she so admired. It was then when
she developed her own technique which is the same basic
process still used by the company today.
In recent years, the selection of finishes has expanded to include weathered bronze, green, vintage rose, garden moss rose,
multicolor and verdigris. The creation of original sculpture for
the Isabel Bloom collection rests in the talented hands of designer,
Donna Young, Isabel’s long-time protégé who continues to preserve Isabel’s unique style.

to complete which is why our original artwork is
treasured by collectors and gift givers alike.
STEP FIVE: Finishing Processes
Weathered Bronze
Our Weathered Bronze finish is created by brushing green
tinted cement on a brown cast sculpture. The color is then
rubbed off to reveal the rich undertones. After curing for
no less than 24 hours, a mixture of white cement and
water is applied by brush and once again rubbed off by
hand and sponges to highlight the detail of the sculpture.

STEP ONE:
The Design
To create our Green and Vintage Rose finish, we
begin with a sculpture that has a base color of either
green or rose. A mixture of white cement and water
is applied by brush and rubbed off by hand and
sponges to highlight the detail of the sculpture.
The original design for each
Isabel Bloom sculpture is first
sketched, then sculpted in clay,
capturing the unique, expressive style of the artist.
STEP TWO:
Mold Making
After cast removal, the rose-based concrete sculpture is placed
in an acid bath to replicate years of weathering. Next, multiple
layers of latex paint are hand-applied and sponged off to further
enhance the aged appearance of the sculpture.
STEP THREE:
Casting
Once cured, each Isabel Bloom
mold is transported to the casting
room where a prepared mixture
of cement, water, rock and choice
selections of color pigments are
hand-poured into the mold.
Having set overnight, the concrete
cast is taken from the mold and
prepared for hand-finishing. Each
sculpture varies slightly in color
and texture so no two are ever
alike.
Those sculptures chosen to receive additional color
are hand painted with either water-based paints or a
mixture of cement pigments and white cement. After
curing for no less than 24 hours, a mixture of white
cement and water is applied by brush and rubbed off
by hand and sponges to highlight the detail of the
sculpture.

A first mold is formed by brushing the original clay sculpture
with many thin layers of latex.
Plaster is then hand-applied over
the latex providing support for the
detailed inner mold.
STEP FOUR:
Cast Removal
Multicolor
Verdigris
Brown and black pigment, white cement and water are
mixed together and applied by brush and hands to a green
base sculpture. The color mixture is then pulled off the
sculpture with wet sponges and brushes to highlight the
line details of the sculpture.
STEP SIX: Clear Resin Application
A clear resin is applied to each sculpture, (excluding Garden Moss Rose),
providing a slight sheen that adds reflective qualities and surface protection.
Each Isabel Bloom sculpture requires four to five days to complete.
STEP SEVEN: Signature
Finally, each completed sculpture is signed
“Isabel Bloom” by a trained artisan,
followed by the copyright symbol and the
year of introduction of that particular
design. “U.S.A.” is then added to assure
you that any sculpture purchased in any
of our Isabel Bloom showrooms was
made right here by our very own skilled
artisans.

2012 Annual Race for the Cure
Quad City Arts Festival of Trees

In keeping with the annual tradition, Isabel Bloom will, for the
25th consecutive year, provide an exclusive design variation of an
existing sculpture from the line for Quad City Arts Festival of
Trees which is held each year in November.
To date, proceeds
from the Isabel
Bloom sculptures
exclusive to Quad
City Arts Festival
of Trees, have
exceeded
$250,000 for the arts agency which in turn engages more than
350,000 people in the Quad City community with nearly 400
quality arts performances and activities annually.

Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.
The Susan G. KomenRace for the Cure is held annually
in June on John Deere Commons in Moline, Illinois
and October in Des Moines, Iowa. Both events are
affiliates of the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
As in the past, a portion of the proceeds from “Miss
Addi Tude”” will be donated to both organizations in
support of Breast Cancer research.
The partnership between Isabel Bloom and Race for the Cure began in
1995 with “Hugs”, one of the most popular Isabel Bloom creations. Each
annual design developed for the Race for the Cure is signed with the RFTC
insignia, making the sculptures collector’s items. To date, over $400,000 in
sculptures have been donated to the Race for the Cure in support of breast
cancer awareness.

Sculpture Availability
Sorry, but orders cannot be accepted for new sculpture designs
prior to the introduction dates presented in our catalog or on
our website.
The time-consuming process of handcrafting each sculpture
may result in limited availability of our newest and most popular designs. Please order early for best selection. Most of our
sculptures ship within one to three business days of order receipt.
To ensure receipt of your order prior to the Mother’s Day,
Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, we recommend placing
your order a minimum of two weeks in advance of the required delivery date.
Payment Options
We accept MasterCard, Visa or Discover credit cards when
purchasing our products. Those purchasing by mail or in our
stores are welcome to use personal checks or money orders, as
well. Checks should be made payable to “Isabel Bloom.”
Shipping and Packaging
We will be pleased to ship your order to any street address in
the continental United States, as directed. Sorry, we cannot
ship to P.O. Boxes.
We ship most orders by UPS ground shipment. In-stock sculpture normally ships within one to three business days of order
receipt. For an additional fee, we offer express delivery of instock sculpture. If any item ordered is out of stock, we will inform you of the expected ship date.

Wrap up your shopping before you even come into our store. Order
gifts today online at www.ibloom.com and we’ll send you an email letting you know when they’re wrapped and ready, usually within 24 to
48 hours for in-stock orders. Then stop by our Studio Showroom to
pick up your gifts.
Just select the Studio Showroom where you’d like to pick up your
order. Add any special instructions or notes. Then hit the “continue”
button at the bottom of the page and complete your order as usual.
Print your confirmation and bring it to the Studio when you pick up
your order. We’ll email you when it’s ready.
Please contact us toll free at 1-800-273-5436 for shipping rates
on packages shipping to Hawaii or Alaska. Sorry, we cannot
ship directly to foreign destinations.
To prevent breakage and assure delivery in excellent condition,
we carefully cushion and place each sculpture in protective
packaging material. These materials are costly, but experience
has taught us not to skimp. We are confident that you will be
pleased with the results.

Shipping Claims and Returns
All sculpture is thoroughly inspected and carefully packed before shipment. If your sculpture arrives in damaged condition,
contact Isabel Bloom (1-800-273-5436 or (563) 336-3766 in
the Quad Cities) to initiate a claim. All cartons and packaging
must be retained for inspection. We request return of any damaged sculpture.
We are always pleased to hear from collectors of Isabel Bloom
sculpture. If you have any questions or wish to suggest ways

Returns
Gift Card
If, for any reason you are unhappy with any Isabel Bloom
sculpture when it arrives, please call 1-800-273-5436 to discuss your concern. A gift receipt is required for returns or exchanges. Sculptures must be in saleable condition. We will
gladly exchange your sculpture for another sculpture or offer a
gift card to be used on future purchases. No returns or exchanges on retired sculptures. Shipping and handling is nonrefundable.
Please remember that every sculpture is hand-finished. The
sculpture you receive may vary slightly in color from those pictured in our gift catalog.
Sculpture Care
Please handle your sculpture with care. Despite its substantial
nature, Isabel Bloom sculpture is fragile. Without appropriate
care and handling, shipping, cracking or breakage may occur.
Sculpture from Isabel Bloom must also be sheltered from
harsh winter weather to avoid damage. In climates where
freezing occurs, give your sculpture an indoor rest during the
freezing periods.
A gift card from Isabel Bloom is a popular and convenient way
to commemorate any occasion. To order, call us toll-free

desired amount on your order form. Gift cards are not taxable
and they will be mailed free of standard shipping and packaging charges. Purchases made with gift cards are subject to all

Venue
The agreement of the parties regarding purchases from Isabel
Bloom shall be construed in accordance with, and disputes
shall be governed by, the laws of the State of Iowa. The Seventh
Judicial District in Scott County, Iowa, shall have jurisdiction
and Venue over all controversies arising out of, or relating to,
this Agreement.
