Chipola AFC Chapter awards
nine scholarships in 2010 from concession stand revenues
Concession stands at Chipola
athletic events are managed by the
Chipola Chapter of the Association
of Florida Colleges and manned by
employee volunteers.
Concession stand proceeds are divided equally between the athletic program and the AFC chapter. The chapter uses a portion of its
proceeds to create scholarships for
employees’ children, spouses and
themselves.
The Chipola College Chapter
awarded nine scholarships totaling
$16,000 to Chipola students for the
academic year 2010-2011. Chipola’s AFC scholarship program was named best in the state by
the state organization.
Chipola’s AFC endowment
has grown to over $150,000. AFC
has awarded more than $106,000
in scholarships to more than 100
students since 1993.
The Chipola chapter raises funds
for its endowment through con-
cession sales at Chipola athletic
events, a silent auction and other
fundraising events.
The Association of Florida
Colleges is a statewide organization open to all employees, retirees
and trustees of Florida’s 28 state
colleges. AFC provides professional development opportunities
for its members, and represents the
interests of state colleges before
the Florida Legislature.

Chipola College has a strong tradition in
intercollegiate athletics. Our programs provide
students with opportunities to become better
players on the field and productive citizens in
their communities.
We believe in a competitive athletic program
with a strong academic support plan. This helps
guarantee that our athletes will be successful on
the field and in the classroom in preparation for
their chosen career.
Our success as an institution is directly related to the quality of education we provide both
inside and outside of the classroom.
I am proud to be a part of this great institution
and its many achievements. Chipola College is
a special place. We invite you to become a part
of our success.
Dr. Gene Prough
President
Chipola College
Chipola College
A half-century ago, a few
visionary educators and citizens dreamed of a new kind
of higher education opportunity
for the people of North Florida.
Their dream became a reality
with the creation of Chipola
Junior College.
Chipola entered into a new
stage of life when it officially
became Chipola College on
August 18, 2003. In response
to a critical shortage of
math and science teachers in secondary schools,
Chipola was given the
approval by SACS to offer four-year degrees to
Secondary Mathematics
Education and Secondary
Science Education.
Beginning in January
2008, Chipola will enroll its
first students in the Bachelor of Applied Science
in Business Management
program.
Even though the name has
changed, Chipola is still known for
transferring quality students to fine
universities such as the University
of Florida, Florida State, and the
University of West Florida, among
others.
During its sixty years of
continuous operation, the college
has developed a reputation for high
academic standards, excellent
teaching, small classes, reasonable fees, a beautiful campus,
and friendly hometown atmosphere.
The one constant that
has made Chipola great is its
emphasis on excellence in academic and extracurricular programs. Chipola provides small
class sections with professional
educators who work willingly
to help you succeed in your
academic career. Chipola students consistently outperform
other college and university students
on state exams, licensure tests, and in
job placement success.
Chipola utilizes an Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) Lab, Success
Center, a Writing Center and a Math
and Science Computer Lab, staffed with
faculty, to help students outside of regular class time. Students also have the
latest in Internet access in the college’s
Technology Center. These services are
available for both the academic transfer
program and the occupational degree
and certificate programs.
In addition to academic excellence,
Chipola has established a center of
excellence in the fine and performing
arts. The arts program is recognized as
outstanding through star-quality drama
productions, instrumental music, show
choir, chorus, and visual arts presentations.
Chipola’s athletic teams have a
history of ranking at or near the top of
regional, state, and national competition
in basketball, baseball and softball. The
college also supports a wide range of
academic and extracurricular clubs and
organizations.
Chipola is understandably proud
of its heritage and looks forward to
continued success during its second
half-century.
Our Name
The college is named after the
Chipola River that flows along its northaern edge—the river was named by
the original Indian inhabitants of the
area. Indian language researchers
have been unable to provide a certain
translation of “Chipola,” but “upstream”
and “sweetwater” have been suggested
as likely interpretations.
Area residents agree that in pronounciation the accent is on the second
syllable, the “pole” in Chipola; and that
the ending sound is “ah.” They disagree
on the first syllable—some pronouncing
it “Shi,” as in Chicago; others “Chi,” as
in chip.
What our Alumni think about Chipola...
Dr. Malcolm Gillis
President, Rice University
“I am very much in debt for the educational
opportunity provided me by Chipola. Without that opportunity, higher education would
probably not have been an option for me.”
Amos R. McMullian
CEO of Flowers Industries, Inc
“The faculty at Chipola knew the students
personally and cared about helping them.”
Johnnie Mae Gibson
At one time, the highest ranking
African American woman in the FBI
“The things I learned at Chipola have
helped me not only to survive, but to ready
myself to find my niche in the world. I have
to call what happened to me there an experience which inspired me to hope and reach
toward a life, which during my high school
years, I thought beyond me.”
Buck Showalter
Manager, Baltimore Orioles
“Success at higher levels begins with proper
training and direction in the early stages.
Attending a college so close to home gave
me the opportunity to grow intellectually and
emotionally.”
David Hart
Actor, “In the Heat of the Night”
“I got cajoled into auditioning at Chipola by a
friend of mine, not knowing that I was making
a decision that would affect the rest of my
life. This time at Chipola set forth a sense of
dedication and a level of professionalism that
I have held onto throughout my career.”
Retired Col. Westanna Harvey Bobbitt
United States Air Force
“When I decided to join the Air Force, my
involvement in school activities at Chipola
provided the quality background necessary for
my acceptance into Officer Training School. I
thought I was just having a great time, but the
Air Force thought I was demonstrating something called leadership and organizational
management.”
The Milton H. Johnson Health Center
Athletic Facilities
Chipola’s home court is
the Milton H. Johnson Health
Center, which has the largest seating capacity of any
basketball facility in the
Panhandle Conference—
approximately 4,000.
Fan attendance at home
games has been the highest in the state for several
years.
The arena has a new
state-of-the-art Maple floor.
New Weight and Conditioning Rooms and an
Athletic Training facility
have been added.
Each athlete shares a
private entrance suite in the
Residence Hall with bath
and limited kitchen facilities.
The college has an excellent cafeteria.
Tutoring for athletes is
provided in the Academic
Center for Excellence (ACE)
Lab, which is equipped with
the latest in computers and
learning software.
Athletes’ class attendance
and academic performance
is monitored to ensure
success in the classroom.
Academic coaches work
with athletes in study halls
and travel with the teams on
extended trips.
The Chipola Baseball/Softball Complex
With the recent renovation of Chipola’s new
baseball softball complex,
Chipola now offers the
best facilities in the Southeast.
New Weight and Conditioning Rooms are furnished with modern equipment.
The new facilities offer
locker rooms, office and
classroom space.
The covered bricked
viewing stands offer an
excellent view of Chipola’s
baseball field, while offering shade from the hot
Florida sun. The bricked
softball field viewing
stands have been recently
renovated to offer more
seating.
Also included is a new
state-of-the-art indoor
pitching and batting area.
Athletic Training
Chipola College allows student assistants
the opportunity to participate in the day to day
health care of the athletes. There are currently
four positions with the athletic department for
Student Athletic Trainers. The Chipola College
Foundation rewards the students’ dedication
and help by assisting those students with
tuition and books for each semester they are
involved.
These students are under the direct supervision of the Head Athletic Trainer for the
athletic department. While assisting the ATC
and athletes, the students begin developing
relationships with area health care professionals, such as Orthopedic Physicians, Nurses,
Physical Therapist, Physician Assistants, and
other health care specialists.

The Academic Center for Excellence
The Academic Center
for Excellence provides free
tutoring or test reviews in
almost every subject, including accounting, biology,
chemistry, most mathematics courses, physics, history,
computer science, literature
and humanities. The tutoring
can be individual tutoring or in
a study group.
Peer tutors are available throughout the week.
Students come to ACE and
join the peer tutor and other Chipola students in discussions regarding class
lectures, chapter readings,
and course handouts. ACE
peer tutors work closely with
Chipola’s faculty to ensure
proper communication of
course content. They offer
clarification of concepts and
assist students in developing
the proper study skills for success in class. More importantly, they provide consistent
encouragement, motivation
and positive reinforcement to
Chipola students.
Test Review Sessions
are scheduled throughout the
semester for many courses.
Study groups can also
meet at the ACE to prepare
for exams or work on class
projects.
The ACE provides access
to computers for class and lab
assignments.
Academic Success Workshops are offered throughout
the semester.
The ACE Success Formula: Regular Participation
in ACE Tutoring + Class Attendance = Success in the
Classroom.

Coach Jake Headrick
JAKE HEADRICK
Jake Headrick enters his second
season as Chipola’s head coach with
very high hopes of bringing Chipola
College its first NJCAA national championship. The 2010-2011 Indians are
off to a 14-2 start entering conference
play with a Top 10 national ranking. As
one of the youngest men’s basketball
coaches in the country (he is 27 years
old), Headrick is poised to improve
from Chipola”s 19-9 season a year ago.
Headrick’s thought on last season: “Last
year, taking over was definitely a challenge with 12 new guys in this program,
but as I look at where we are now, the
top is not far away and that’s where we
plan to stay, and that’s’ where this place
belongs”. All five of Headrick’s sophomores graduated and signed division
one scholarships.
Headrick also served two seasons
as an assistant at Chipola (2006-2007,
2008-2009) winning 68 games in those
two years while making an appearance in the prestigious NJCAA national
championship game and the semifinals
16
game in Hutchinson, KS. In his three
years combined at Chipola as both head
coach and assistant he has coached 23
division one basketball players and two
NJCAA national player of the year award
winners in Jamarcus Ellis (Indiana) and
Casey Mitchell (West Virginia).
Headrick spent one season working
for one of the nation’s premiere coaches
in Andy Kennedy at Ole Miss as the
Operations assistant and video coordinator during 2007-08 season. Headrick
helped the rebels, a preseason lastplace pick in the SEC West, to the NIT
Semifinals and 24 wins (second most
in school history). He handled administrative duties and assisted with academics and on-campus
recruiting.
Before arriving
at Chipola, Headrick
served as an assistant coach at the University of Montevallo
for one season, where
he helped the Falcons
reach the NCAA Division II Elite Eight and
set a school record
for victories with 29.
At Montevallo, Headrick coached the Gulf
South Conference
Player of the Year
James Hall and two
All-Americans.
A native of Hamilton, Ala., Headrick
graduated from the
University of Montevallo in 2005 with a
B.S. in Kinesiology.
As a two-year letter-
man for the Falcons, Headrick helped
the team win back-to-back Gulf South
Conference championships and reach
the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen both
season. Over his two seasons, Headrick
helped the Falcons to a 49-16 record.
He attended Bevill State Community
College before transferring to Montevallo.
Headrick graduated from Hamilton
High School in 2001, where he was a
three-time all-county selection. He averaged 21 points per game his senior
season and helped the team to its first
20-win season in seven years.
The Coaching Staff
PATRICK BLAKE
Assistant Coach
sTETSON HAIRSTON
Assistant Coach
First Year at Chipola
Patrick Blake is entering
his first season as an assistant men’s basketball coach at
Chipola.
Prior to arriving at Chipola,
Patrick served as a graduate assistant for Coach Andy Kennedy
at The University of Mississippi.
In his two years on staff, Patrick
was in charge of day to day video operations as well as other
administrative duties. This past year, the Rebels finished tied
for first in the SEC Western Division and ended their season
in New York with a run to the NIT Final Four.
Patrick graduated from the University of Louisville with a
Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing. At Louisville he
was a student manager for Coach Rick Pitino and the men’s
basketball team for four years, serving as head manager for
the last two. The Cardinals had great success in Patrick’s
four years with the program, winning the Conference USA
title outright his freshman year and ending the season with a
trip to the NCAA Final Four. The next three seasons would
end with a run to his first NIT Final Four, a second round
appearance and an Elite Eight Appearance in the NCAA
Tournament.
Patrick is a native of Evansville, IN, where his parents, Mike
and Jenny Blake, still live today. He has an older sister, Christine
Utzinger, and two older brothers, Mike and Billy Blake.
STU STUEDEMAN
Assistant Coach
First Year at Chipola
In school at Vestavia Hills
High School Stuedeman lettered
in three sports - football, basketball, and baseball. He played
basketball for the legendary
Coach George Hatchett and is
still among the top assist leaders
in VHHS history.
Stu then went on to play
for Coach Lennie Acuff at the
University of Alabama-Huntsville
where he helped the Chargers to a 22-8 record and an NCAA
tournament birth. Unfortunate injuries brought an abrupt end
to Stuedeman’s playing career but he soon transferred to the
University of Alabama.
First Year at Chipola
Stetson Hairston begins his
first season as assistant men’s
basketball coach at Chipola.
Before joining the Indians,
he served as an assistant men’s
basketball coach at Lincoln Trail
College in Robinson, Illinois from
2006-2008. In his first year at
Lincoln Trail, his team won the
Region 24 championship, and was one game away from the
National Tournament.
After his two seasons at Lincoln Trail, Hairston moved on
to Southwestern Illinois College for two years where their team
was 55-9 in two years. In his first year at SWIC, his team was
Region 24 champions with a trip to the National Tournament.
In Hairston’s second season, his team finished 24-7 and lost
in second round of the Region 24 tournament.
As a player, Hairston was a four-year starter at Southern
Illinois University Carbondale in the Missouri Valley Conference. In four years as a player, his team won four conference championships with a record of 104-28. The Salukis
also earned four at-large bids in the NCAA Tournament with
a Sweet 16 and a second round appearance.
Hairston finished his career with over 1000 points and
500 rebounds. Hairston was also a two-time All-Conference
and two-time All-Defense performer at Southern Illinois.
While at Alabama Stuedeman worked as a student assistant for the men’s basketball team under head coach Mark
Gottfried. Stuedeman graduated from Alabama in August of
2009 with a degree in Human Development.
Upon graduation Stu was hired by Coach Robert Thompson at Spring Hill College as the top assistant coach. The
Badgers went 15-13 during his one season as assistant
coach, making it to the Semi-finals of the GCAC tournament.
During that time Stuedeman became a feared recruiter and
helped bring what is being called the best recruiting class in
Spring Hill history to campus.
Stu comes from a coaching family. His father, Vince
Stuedeman, worked along side the legendary Coach Bear
Bryant as a student assistant, his two sisters are both softball
coaches. Les is the head coach at UAH and has won over
700 games. Vann is the pitching coach at Alabama where they
have become a perennial Top Five team in the country. 17

David Lane enters his eighth season at the helm of the Lady Indians.
Lane’s seventh season was by far
the most disappointing of his coaching
career. Several strong non-conference wins, including a victory of national power Trinity Valley, were quickly
washed away due to several injuries
and dismissals. The Lady Indians entered the Panhandle conference with
just 7 scholarship players. That number
dropped to 6 several games in due to
another injury. With 12 games against
teams ranked in the top ten of the NJCAA national poll, Chipola struggled to
a 1-11 conference mark. Their lone win
was over #3 Pensacola Junior College.
The Lady Indians played much better
than their record indicated and were
competitive to the very end in most of
their loses, however, the talent in the
Panhandle was too much for the shorthanded Lady Indians.
Bianca Jarrett became the 2nd
28
consecutive Lady Indian to
earn First Team All-American status with NJCAA
and the WBCA (Latoya
Williams, 2009). Jarrett,
who signed with West
Virginia, capped off the
season with an impressive feat. Jarrett averaged 35.4ppg in the final four
games of conference play.
Lane’s sixth season
(2009) made school
history when the Lady
Indians defeated Kaskaskia College (IL), 8174, to finish third in the
National Junior College Athletic Association Women’s Basketball Tournament in the
Bicentennial Center in
Salina, Kansas. This is
the highest finish in the
history of the women’s
program at Chipola.
The Lady Indians
began the tournament
with wins over Sheridan
College, WY (86-47)
and Walters State, TN
(66-53). Jefferson Col-
lege, MO defeated Chipola (78-59) in
the third round. Central Arizona defeated Jefferson College in the championship game to win the women’s national
title.
The Lady Indians finished their
season at 30-6.
Lane’s fourth season (2007) was
one of many highs and lows. While
fighting through another difficult sched-
ule and several early season setbacks,
the Lady Indians
once again accumulated a number
of big wins. Chipola
fought for another
second place Panhandle Conference
finish and a fifth
consecutive FCCAA/NJCAA Region VIII Tournament appearance.
Chipola won its third
straight FCCAA/NJCAA Region VIII
championship, once
again defeating Gulf
Coast in the finals
60-57.
In Salina, Odessa (TX) once again all but ended Chipola’s
season with a defeat in the second round of the National
Tournament. The Lady Indians battled back with wins over
Copiah-Lincoln and Salt Lake C.C. to claim fifth place.
Lane’s third season (2006) at Chipola continued to see
history made and records fall. The regular season began
with an eight-week run as the number two ranked team in the
country, the highest ranking ever for the Lady Indians. Early
season victories over junior college powerhouse Trinity Valley
and national tourney regular Southeastern (IL), as well as a
last-second loss to eventual national champion Monroe (NY),
highlighted a very difficult non-conference.
The Lady Indians battled their way to a second place
finish in the Panhandle and earned their fourth consecutive
FCCAA/NJCAA Region VIII Tournament appearance. The
Tournament final game was another thrilling contest between
Chipola and Gulf Coast. Chipola defeated Gulf Coast 73-69,
and earned their second consecutive trip to the NJCAA National Tournament.
Chipola earned redemption on their second trip to Salina.
Early round victories over Arkansas-Fort Smith and Trinity
Valley propelled the Lady Indians into the Final Four where
they lost a heartbreaker to Odessa (TX) 56-52. After another
loss to Central Arizona, Chipola settled for a fourth place finish. The Lady Indians 2005-2006 season ended with school
records in victories (31), conference victories (12), NJCAA
national ranking (#2), and consecutive victories (11).
Lane’s second season (2005) began the Lady Indians’
historic journey. Tojalynn Atmore’s three pointer as time
expired catapulted the Lady Indians to a 54-51 victory over
Gulf Coast that captured Chipola’s first-ever Region VIII
championship and a trip to the NJCAA National Tournament
in Salina, KS. The Lady Indians finished with
a 29-8 mark, a school record, and an NJCAA
national ranking of #6.
Lane came to Chipola from Kirkwood Community College
in Cedar Rapids, IA, where he served as an assistant coach
in the men’s program in 2003.
Prior to Kirkwood, Lane served as an assistant to the
boy’s program at Iowa City West High from 1996-2002. Lane
was also an assistant with the girl’s basketball program from 2000-2002.
“I’m truly honored to be part of the great tradition here at
Chipola,” said Coach Lane. “Chipola is an excellent place for
top-notch athletes to come and get an outstanding education
and further their basketball careers. Chipola is also a place
where student-athletes can feel comfortable. The college
and the town have a family atmosphere that supports the
program.”
Lane says teaching his players about good decision-making is the key to success. “I want my players to do the right
thing—to know the difference between right and wrong both
on and off the court.”
Academics are a big priority for Coach Lane, “We’re going
to have a team that works just as hard in the classroom as
it does on the court to achieve success and represents the
team well within the college.”
A native of Iowa City, IA, Lane played college baseball at
Kirkwood CC and Luther College in Decorah, IA. He graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA, with a Bachelor
of Arts Degree in History. He married the former Heather
Meyer in May of 2005.

Chipola College hosted the first (1961) and last fourteen
(1996-2010) State JUCO Tournaments. This year, Chipola
will host the Men’s and Women’s State Tournaments on
March 2-5, 2011.
The record of men’s tournament winners shows why the
Panhandle Conference is considered the toughest in the
state and the nation.
Of 50 state tournaments, Panhandle teams(*) have won
25. Of the 25, Chipola has won twelve, the largest number
of wins of any college in the state.
Pensacola has won five state championships and won
the national championship in 1993. Okaloosa-Walton has
won three state tournaments— and in 1995 went on to win
the national championship. Chipola finished third in the
national tournament in 2009.
Fans have suggested that Panhandle teams wear themselves out playing each other before they get to the state
tournament. Rumor has it that both Pensacola and Okaloosa-Walton found the national tournament easier to win
than the Panhandle Conference championship.

The Women’s State Championship was joined with the
men’s state championship in 1997. Both tournaments have
been hosted by Chipola College ever since (1997-2010).
This year, Chipola will host the Men’s and Women’s State
Tournaments on March 2-5, 2011.
The record of women’s tournament winners shows why
the Panhandle Conference is considered the toughest in the
state and the nation.
Of 40 state tournaments, Panhandle teams(*) have won
17. Out of the last 18 years, the Panhandle Conference
has won 16 championships and have won the last thirteen
consecutive years. Chipola won its first state championship in 2005 and has won 4 chamiponships in the last six
years.
Gulf Coast has won eight state championships and won
the national title in 2003, 2008 and 2010. Gulf Coast is
the only Florida team to win the title since 1990. Chipola

CHIPOLA SOFTBALL FINISHES
FIFTH IN NATIONAL TOURNEY
The Chipola Lady Indians finished fifth in the NJCAA National
Softball Tournament in St. George, Utah on May 21, 2010. Chipola mounted a late rally before falling to Seminole State College,
9-6, in an elimination game. Chipola entered the tournament as the No.
3 team in the NJCAA.
Chipola lost a 16-7 battle to in-state rival Miami-Dade in the semifinals of the national tournament on May 21. The game was a rematch
of the state championship which Chipola won 14-0. Timely hits led the Chipola Lady Indians to defeat Chattanooga
10-4 on the opening day of the tournament. In the top of the first, Trish
Bliss connected with a two-run homerun to give the Indians an early 2-0
lead.
Chipola beat Georgia Perimeter 7-4 in the opening-round of the
tournament on May 20. The Chipola Lady Indians captured the 2010 FCCAA State and
Region VIII Championship with a 14-0 win over Miami-Dade on May
2. Chipola beat State College of Florida for the second time in two days
by the final 13-8 to capture the FCCAA Gulf District Championship to
advance to the NJCAA National Tournament. Chipola’s road to victory in the state tournament was paved with
victories against South Florida (4-2), St. Petersburg (4-3), State College
of Florida (7-4 & 13-8), and Miami-Dade (14-0). In the Miami-Dade game, Chipola was led by Andrea Sullivan, who
had three hits, three runs, five RBIs, two walks, and two homeruns in
three at bats. Sullivan was named NJCAA Region VIII Tournament
Most Valuable Player and batted .667 for the tournament, 10 for 16. In her sixth season at the helm of the Lady Indians program, coach
Belinda Hendrix had 10 players on the Panhandle All-Conference team,
including catcher Kellie Todd, Conference Player of the Year, and Emma
Stevenson, Conference Pitcher of the Year.
“I am extremely proud of our team and how we have fought all year
long through adversity,” said Coach Belinda Hendrix. “At the beginning
of the season, nobody thought we would compete for the conference title
and make a run at the state title.”
“To have the opportunity to compete in the National Tournament in Utah,
it says a great deal about the character and the heart of our team.”
The Lady Indians won the Panhandle Conference championship
this year, and in 2008 and 2007. Chipola finished fifth in the 2009 State
Tournament. The team captured the state and national championships in
2007. The Lady Indians finished the season with a record of 49-12.

When Belinda Hendrix was introduced as the new softball coach at
Chipola College, she expressed her
desire to build a respectable softball
program and develop her players into
both scholars and players.
In six seasons at the helm, Hendrix
has certainly brought her dream into
reality. Posting an overall record of
267-76, the Lady Indians have proven
themselves worthy both in the state of
Florida and on the national scene.
During the 2010 campaign, Hendrix’s team won their third consecutive
Panhandle Conference Championship
(12-2) while earning her fourth consecutive Panhandle Conference Coach of the
Year award (2006, 2007, 2008, 2010).
Hendrix’s most successful season
occurred in 2007 when the Lady Indians, under her direction, captured the
school’s first team national title. After
posting an overall record of 57-6, Hendrix was honored by her peers by being
48
named the 2007 NJCAA National
Coach of the Year.
Coach Hendrix is a firm believer in
the old cliché that hard work pays off.
She is notorious for being a student of
the game and passing her passion for the
sport down to her players. She is wellknown for developing players that can
excel at several different positions.
Hendrix believes that the experiences and challenges her players face on
the softball field will equip them with the
tools to adapt and conquer anything life
might throw at them. Using this mentality,
Hendrix has coached 45 All-Conference
Players and 8 NJCAA All-Americans.
A 1994 graduate of Chattahoochee
High School, Hendrix led her softball
team to a district championship and
was named Most Valuable Player. Upon
leaving high school, Hendrix received an
athletic scholarship to Thomas University
in Thomasville, GA, where she played on
the Hawks’ softball team.
After earning her degree in Psychology from Troy University, she returned to
the Florida panhandle. In 2001, Hendrix
began her coaching career at Vernon
High School where she would amass
a three-year record of 56-22 and two
district titles.
The Coaching Staff
JIMMY HENDRIx
Assistant Coach
Jimmy Hendrix is entering his sixth
season as assistant coach at Chipola
College. Coach Hendrix works primarily
with the Lady Indians’ infielders and
has played a key role in the development of the pitching and catching staff.
He serves as the recruiting coordinator
for the Chipola Softball Program.
Coach Hendrix is a 1995 graduate
of Chipley High School. After graduating high school, started at shortstop at
Enterprise State College. Upon transferring to Thomas University in Thomasville, GA, Hendrix led his team to
their first appearance at the regional tournament and was named MVP for
the 1999-2000 season.
Hendrix began his coaching career at Vernon High School where he
coached the baseball team from 2001-04 before taking over the reins of
the Cottondale Lady Hornets softball team from 2004-05.
He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from
the University of West Florida.
LYNN EARLY
Assistant Coach
Lynn Early enters her sixth season
with the Chipola Lady Indians Softball
Program. Lynn works directly with the
team’s stats and carefully monitors the
academic progress of each studentathlete.

2009-2010 Season
CHIPOLA FINISHES SEASON 27-25
The Chipola Indians finished the season with a 7-5 loss
to Miami Dade in the semi-final round of the FCCAA State
Tournament, May 8, 2010
Miami scored 7 runs on 9 hits with no errors and left 5
on base. Chipola scored 5 runs on 8 hits with two errors and
8 men left on base.
Cody Martin was 2 for 3 for Chipola. Tyler Wilson was 2
for 2.
The Indians finished second in the Panhandle Conference to Gulf Coast which was also eliminated from the state
tournament. Chipola chalked up a 13-11 conference mark with
an overall 27-25 record.
Chipola outfielder Eric Sauls was named to the FCCAA
All-State First Team. Sauls finished the year with a .347
batting average with 66 hits, including 17 homeruns and 20
doubles.
Chipola outlasted St. Johns River 3-2 in the second round
of the tournament. Indian pitcher Rodney Quintero logged a
135-pitch performance allowing only seven hits while striking
out ten in eight innings of work.
The lightning strikes were not the only thing popping
heard around Tigertown in Lakeland as Chipola (26-26)
battled Palm Beach (36-13) in the opening round of the state
tournament. The Indians were not able to keep pace with Palm
Beach as the Indians lost 16-10 and were forced to battle their
way back through the losers’ bracket. Eric Sauls’ three-run home run, his second home run of
the game, capped a five-run seventh inning for the Chipola
and gave them a 10-8 lead. However, a 53-minute rain delayed
occurred after the final out and the Indians were not able to
continue their momentum after the delay.
In the bottom of the seventh with two outs, Palm Beach
pounced with their own three-run home run and then the
Panther’s next batter hit a solo home run.
Indian pitcher Johnny Cristi was unable to cover first base
as Alex Bello for Palm Beach beat Chipola’s Evan Stermer
to the bag. An ensuing throwing error put runners on second
and third. Coach Johnson. “Today we didn’t throw enough
strikes and made too many mistakes; that’s been the story of
our year.”

The Chipola Appreciation Club
Most active community college booster club in
state continues to build athletic scholarship fund
Chipola’s beloved late coach Milton H. Johnson explains the
Chipola Appreciation Club’s purpose as “to help the college maintain
a quality athletic program.”
The Appreciation Club is the official support organization of
the college’s four athletic programs. Directors conduct an annual
membership drive that yields an average of 200 memberships.
Memberships—$250—include four passes to all basketball games,
hospitality room, and reserved seating.
In 1997, the club began hosting the State Junior College Basketball Tournament. The top men’s teams and women’s teams meet
in the Milton H. Johnson Health Center every March to compete for
the FCCAA/NJCAA Region VIII Titles. Chipola was the site of the
first men’s state tourney in 1961 at the school’s old Field House, now
an arts center. Former Chipola coach Jim Pavy’s Indians won the
state title that year. Since then, Chipola’s men’s team has won twelve
state titles—more than any Florida school. The men’s tournament
returned to Chipola in 1996 after 35 years. Chipola hosted the first
ever, combined men’s and women’s tournament in 1997 and has
hosted the event ever since. The Chipola Lady Indians won their
first state title in 2005, and again in 2006, 2007 and 2009.
The club has amassed more than $500,000 in an endowment
mainly through its former fund-raiser, the Wild Game Dinner, held
during the 1990’s. The money will eventually be used to fund athletic
scholarships.
Retired coaching legend Milton H. Johnson was a charter member of the Appreciation Club in the late 1960’s. He said, “The club
has been instrumental in keeping Chipola at the level we’ve been
at for a number of years. The club was formed as a businessmen’s
support organization to help Chipola compete at the state and national level. It’s a very important part of Chipola’s athletic programs.
A great number of well-known businessmen have been directors of
the club through the years with a core group that has kept the club
vital through the turn of the century.”
Johnson said Chipola’s strong athletic traditions can be traced
back to the beginnings of the college in 1947. “Roy Beall and others
who helped form the college recognized the importance of establishing a sports program. As athletics got more expensive and more
competitive, more money was needed for things like transportation
and uniforms that the college could not afford.”
The Chipola Appreciation Club has helped the Chipola basketball program maintain its place as one of the premier programs in
the country. Chipola’s owes much of its acclaim to the late Milton
H. Johnson who coached at Chipola for 32 years. The college
gymnasium and the Panhandle Conference Trophy also bear his
name. Johnson recorded 628 wins at Chipola and led the team to
the state tourney six times. He is a charter member of the FCCAA
Hall of Fame and a member of the National Junior College Athletic
Hall of Fame.
Appreciation Club president Robert Trammell, also one of
Johnson’s former players, said, “Chipola College is an important
part of this community. And athletics is an important part of the
college. It is something very special to see 3,000 fans show up for
the homecoming game. No other junior college in the country has
more loyal alumni and community support.”
Chipola Coach Jake Headrick says, “I think historically, Chipola
has had one of the finest programs in the state and this is due in
large part to the Appreciation Club, the college and the facilities on
our campus. Our support programs are arguably the best in the
state and among the finest in the country.”
