everything you need to know!
Levels of Play
New This Year! The FFOC has three levels of play, plus Q School! The
new Tri-Level Pricing System (TPS) features three tiers:
team): The team must win its league to qualify
» Tforierthe1Las($75VegasperBracket
and $1,000,000 Grand Prize.
ier 2 ($125 per team): The team must finish 1st or 2nd in its
» Tleague
to qualify for the Las Vegas Bracket and $1,000,000 Grand Prize.
»
T ier 3 ($275 per team): The team must finish 1st through
6th in its league to qualify for the Las Vegas Bracket and $1,000,000
Grand Prize.
*Teams must draft on or before August 20, 2009, in order to qualify
for the above rates.
In addition, the FFOC is now introducing Q School, a $10 entry free with
eligibility for the Las Vegas Bracket. For full details about Q School, please
see page 69.
Game Overview
Participants in the FFOC compete in 10-team standard snake-draft
leagues. Online drafts begin in July and end at 4 PM CT on Thursday,
September 10, 2009. Participants play each team in their league in a
round-robin tournament in Weeks 1 through 9 of the NFLseason. There is
no trading in the FFOC, but free agent pickups are allowed through Week
9. Teams will accumulate one win or loss in each head-to-head matchup
during the first nine weeks. Each team will accumulate an additional win
or loss each week based on whether they finish in the top half or bottom
half of the league in weekly points scored. At the end of nine weeks, each
team will have 18 games attributed to its record. The top two teams will
play in a head-to-head match-up to determine which team is the league
winner and which team finishes in second place.
At the end of 10 weeks, each team will be placed in one of three brackets
based on their team success relative to Level of Play. The three brackets
are the Las Vegas Bracket, 1st & Goal Bracket, and Red Zone Bracket.
The FFOC Brackets
The Fantasy Football Open Championship consists of the Las Vegas
Bracket, 1st & Goal Bracket, and Red Zone Bracket. Each bracket has
different requirements and prize structure.
The Las Vegas Bracket consists of the best of the best teams in the FFOC.
Teams in this bracket are eligible to win the $1,000,000 grand prize following Week 9, along with 14 other cash prizes totaling more than $1.2

million. Teams qualify for the Las Vegas Bracket based on the criteria
specified for their particular bracket mentioned above. The Las Vegas
Bracket concludes in Week 16 with the Las Vegas Main Event, where
$1,000,000 is awarded to the overall winner. The Las Vegas Main Event
includes the top 15 teams in the Las Vegas Bracket that have passed a cut
line each week. In Weeks 11-14, a percentage of teams in the Las Vegas
Bracket are cut based on their total fantasy points scored for only that
particular week’s games. The top 15 teams still left in Week 15 earn a spot
at the Las Vegas Main Event, which includes an all-expenses paid trip to
Las Vegas and eligibility to win the Grand Prize of $1,000,000.
Scoring
The 1st & Goal Bracket includes teams in 2nd through 8th place that did
not qualify for the Las Vegas Bracket and teams that were eliminated
from the Las Vegas Bracket. Teams in this bracket are eligible to win up
to $10,000, with the top eight teams in this bracket earning cash prizes.
Each week a percentage of teams will be cut from the 1st & Goal Bracket
based on points scored each week. The teams cut from the 1st & Goal
Bracket will join the Red Zone Bracket.
To view the full FFOC Scoring system visit:
www.ffoc.com/rules/index.php?page=scoring
The Red Zone Bracket includes teams in 9th and 10th place in each
league. Also, teams cut from the 1st & Goal Bracket each week will join
the Red Zone Bracket. Teams in this bracket are eligible to win up to
$5,000, with the top eight teams in this bracket earning cash prizes.
The final places in each bracket will be determined by the sum of three
scores: Average points Week 1 through Week 9 + Average points
Week 10 through Week 15 + Week 16 points
In addition to the three brackets mentioned above, the FFOC also has the
July Bracket (teams that draft on or before July 31), the August Bracket
(teams that drafted August 1-August 20), the Friend Referral Bracket, and
the Q School Brackets for an opportunity to win even more prizes. For full
prize information, please see the Prizes section, as well as Page 68 for
Q School Bracket information and Page 70 for Friend Referral Bracket
information.
Live Draft and Roster
At the time of signup, participants will select a draft time from available
times for their team(s). Based on the selected draft time, each team will
be assigned to a corresponding 10-team league. All leagues are public
leagues and participants cannot choose to be in specific leagues. Leagues
will be a mix of teams from one or more of the three pricing levels.
During the draft, each team must complete its roster of 10 starters and 10
reserves (20 rounds) according to the position requirements for the starting lineup and the player position limits for the entire roster.
Position requirements for the starting lineup:
1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 FLEX (QB, RB, WR, or TE), 1 K, 1 D/ST
Draft position limits for the entire roster (regardless of whether a starter or
a reserve): 3 QB, 6 RB, 6 WR, 3 TE, 3 K, 3 D/ST
Teams accumulate points each week based on the FFOC point scoring
system and their weekly lineup of 10 starters. These weekly point totals
are used to determine head-to-head matchup wins and losses, as well
as to rank teams within their league and within the 6 brackets. For Q
School, these weekly point totals are used to determine head-to-head
matchup wins and losses, as well as to rank teams within their Q School
league and within the 2 brackets: Q Bracket and Post-Season Bracket.
All teams accumulate weekly point totals for the first 16 weeks of the
NFL regular season.
Roster Changes
Acquisition via Blind Bidding Process
»EachFreeteamAgent
has a $100 budget for acquiring free agents, and there is only
one $100 budget available for each team to be used for the entire contest.
Bids can be submitted at 9 AM CT on Tuesday and until 10 AM CT on
Thursday each week. Bids must be submitted in $1 increments (no cents).
The minimum bid is $1. Free agents will be awarded and team owners
will be notified by 12 Noon CT on Thursday. After Week 9, free agent blind
bidding is not available.
»
Free Agent Acquisition via First-Come First-Served
Team owners can pick up any available free agent after 12 Noon CT on
Thursday and until the scheduled start time of the player’s team’s game
for the week. Players dropped during the current week’s Blind Bid process are not available as first-come, first-served free agents, but will be
available for the following week’s Blind Bid Process, if applicable. Each
free agent that is picked up costs $1 from the $100 free agent budget. A
player must be dropped from the team in order to pick up a free agent;
the game start time of the dropped player’s team must not have passed.
When dropping a player from the starting lineup, the free agent must be
eligible to play the same position as the player being dropped. After Week
9, free agents are not available.
Roster Switch: MOVING STARTERS AND RESERVES
»Roster
switches can be made beginning at 9 AM CT on Tuesday and until
the scheduled start time of each player’s team’s game for the week. Once
the scheduled game start time of a player’s team has passed, that player
may not be moved to or from the starting lineup. Once the game start
times of all starting lineup players’ teams have passed, a team owner can
no longer make roster switches for the current week. Roster switches are
available for Week 1 through 16 games for all teams.

FFOC 2008 - LAS VEGAS, NV
EVENT RECAP
by Chad Schroeder
The Fantasy Football Open Championship Main Event essentially began
the Monday night before Week 16. I was lucky enough to survive the final
cut line with both of my Cocktails and Dreams teams still alive, giving me
two shots at the $1,000,000 grand prize. Those cut lines were a brilliant
idea. They made each week a true fight for survival. It was just one of the
many awesome features of the FFOC.
During the week, I was asked to write an article for the Omaha World
Herald. It ended up being on the front page of the sports section and was
very well done. I also wrote a follow-up in the Tuesday edition after the
Vegas results were in. Finally, I did a local Omaha radio show that week,
as well as a couple of internet radio shows. Needless to say, it all made
for a busy few days.
On the Saturday morning prior to the Main Event, I picked up my friend
Justin before heading to the airport. Stan Misthios, founder of the FFOC,
was kind enough to fly him out to Vegas with me, since I qualified two
teams, and Justin had owned a few squads, as well. That’s where the
fun started. First, we almost missed our flight because of a raging snowstorm. Then, the airline mishandled our bags, so we were left with only
the clothes on our backs before my uncle got into town later that night. It
wasn’t the smoothest of trips, but at least we got there, right?

I owned 66 total fantasy football teams last year (I’m a bit of a fantasy
nut, if you couldn’t tell), so upon our arrival in Vegas, we sipped some
cocktails and set all of my lineups before the start of the Saturday night
tilt between the Ravens and Cowboys. We went downstairs, watched the
game, and met some of the other FFOC competitors. After the Ravens’
victory, there was a meet-and-greet session at the Bellagio Sports Book,
where we got to shake hands with even more of our fellow competitors.
Justin and I proceeded to drink with Stan until the wee hours of the night.
It was a great time.
and Slaton were both pretty much held in check. Still, Brown had a huge
game with five field goals, so I had a large lead heading into the Sunday
night game. Being a pro gambler, I thought I had at minimum a 90 percent
shot at coming away with the $1,000,000.
Sunday morning came early, and I had to shake off the hangover and
make sure I had all my lineups set correctly, especially for my two FFOC
finalist teams. I had some very difficult decisions, but we entered them
and headed downstairs to watch the games. Justin and I settled in, got
comfy on two front-row couches, and enjoyed the action. All in all, it was
a pretty good setup. My teams got off to a bit of a slow start, but then
Matt Cassel began blowing up, Antonio Bryant caught a long touchdown
pass, and Larry Fitzgerald reeled in a long score of his own. Yep, I was in
business.
Everything changed when DeAngelo Williams took the field in New York
that night. Over a hundred yards and four touchdowns later, my shot at
$1,000,000 had gone by the wayside. Justin and I were the only ones in
the room during most of that game because, as the likely winners, we had
been asked to stay so that we could be filmed. Instead of being filmed
winning $1,000,000, it turned out that we were filmed losing $1,000,000.
Hopefully we didn’t handle it too poorly. It was very painful. It basically
felt like I was in a Saw movie. By the end of the contest, many of the
participants returned, and we congratulated Shane Schroeder, who was
now in the lead. We then tried to regroup for a while before sucking it up
and going down to the club.
My squad had a good chance heading into the afternoon contests. I still
had Steve Slaton and Adrian Peterson to go, along with our defense, Kris
Brown, and Aaron Rodgers on Monday night. If I got anything out of Slaton
or AP, I could just run away and hide. It didn’t happen, though, as Peterson
Everyone at the event was very cool. Many of them congratulated me before the Sunday night game. I thanked them, but I was also sure to remind
them that the competition was far from over, even though it appeared to
be. Unfortunately, I was right.
We mingled and had some drinks until we saw a group that included Stan,
Carol Matthews, and none other than Jerry Rice roll in. Justin and I asked
to be let down to their table, and Stan pulled some strings to make it happen. We had only a pass to get into the club, so it kind of felt like we were
crashing a VIP party. It was very cool rubbing elbows with Stan and Jerry
and meeting Carol, who I have talked to many times over the years while
playing CDM games. We hung out well into the evening.
Monday, as it turned out, wasn’t one of the more enjoyable days, as Justin
and I constantly had to relive what had happened in that Carolina game
the night before, but we tried to keep things positive. After all, I did quite
well in some of my other leagues over the weekend, so it wasn’t a complete loss. I eventually made my way downstairs to do an interview, and
then before I knew it, the Monday night game was starting. When all was
said and done, I barely hung on for second place.
After the game, I got to talk to more of the FFOC participants, and it
was truly amazing how great all of the guys were. It’s too bad everyone
couldn’t have had a top-five finish. We ended up spending some time with
Shane, who was the victor of the $1,000,000, before we left. We got to
talk to him for a couple of hours at O’Sheas and rehashed everything. He
is truly a humble and great guy. We had a good time over there.

My uncle Kelly, Justin and I all had an excellent time, and the whole FFOC
experience was unbelievable. It’s hard to have that much fun while going
through what we did on Sunday night, but we found a way. The entire
weekend was a first-class operation. I can’t say enough great things, and
the design of the game and everything else was truly amazing. Thanks
again to Stan and everyone associated with the FFOC!
FROM RYAN HOUSTON
SR. VP Business Development & Publisher, FANBALL.COM
------------------------------------------------------------------------Over the years I’ve experienced a lot of great events. I never thought
I’d experience what I did when I was in Las Vegas for the Fantasy
Football Open Championship.
Simply put, the FFOC Main Event did not disappoint.
Upon check-in, I was led to a green door that is exclusive for VIPs. Hell,
I’ve been to the Bellagio a lot and never knew this door even existed
(what does that say about how they view my betting habits?). This was
not the typical Bellagio room. This was one of the huge rooms on the
exclusive floors where all the fun happens.
I headed downstairs to the Magnolia Suite, where plasma televisions
were set up in front of about 20 couches. Were else can you find that?
I mean, seriously? You have to play fantasy football to truly understand
the entire concept. We are at the Bellagio, arguably the finest hotel
on the Las Vegas strip, and I’m looking at rows of leather sofas and
plasma televisions all set up so that 15 fantasy guys can watch football games. It was truly Fantasy Football Heaven!
I scoured the room and saw many who were checking for last-minute
news. Some were walking out on the patio to get fresh air. Others were
trying to make that important last-minute decision. It was snowing in
Foxboro – should they sit Randy Moss? The stress was so thick you
could cut it with a knife.
Every play – some cheers, some boos. Every scoring update – excitement and disgust. It was intense.
It came down to the Monday night game, and Shane Schroeder won
the first $1,000,000 prize purse for a fantasy football league.
Everything about this event was first class. It was truly special, and
every person should get a chance to experience it.
I’ll be there again this year – will you?

RH: What were your key team moves that helped you bring home
the $1,000,000 grand prize?
SS: Some of the many key moves were getting a lot of quality players
throughout the draft, as some of my better performing players were in the
middle to late rounds. I waited on quarterbacks and landed Philip Rivers
in the sixth round and Aaron Rodgers in the ninth. Both performed at high
levels. I also got some great value from DeAngelo Williams in the late
rounds. Williams helped with great performances throughout the year, and
especially in the playoffs. It is also important to work the waiver wire and
know when it is time to drop or add players. This can be just as hard as
knowing how to set your weekly lineup. One key move was adding Ted
Ginn before my roster locked going into the playoffs. I didn’t think I would
have to use him in the playoffs, but sure enough, Anquan Boldin was injured and wasn’t going to play in the final week, so I started Ginn and he
scored on a reverse in the first quarter of the championship week!
RH: How would you compare your experience in the FFOC
to other fantasy football games and contests that you
have entered?
JERRY RICE PRESENTED 2008’s FFOC WINNER SHANE SCHROEDER WITH HIS $1,000,000 PRIZE!
Do you ever daydream about winning $1,000,000 and becoming a fantasy football celebrity? Well, for Shane Schroeder, that dream became a
reality when he was crowned the champ of the Fantasy Football Open
Championship last season. We had a chance to chat one-on-one with
fantasy football’s first millionaire to discuss the storybook season…
Ryan Houston: How much experience did you have playing fantasy football before entering the FFOC last season?
SS: My motivation for entering the FFOC was to be involved in another
football league with the opportunity to possibly win the $1,000,000 prize.
I don’t think I ever really thought I would win, but I just wanted to see how
I would compete. If anything, it would keep me busy. Knowing I would be
watching a lot of football anyway makes it easy to track throughout the
year and always keeps the season interesting.
RH: What was your strategy at the draft?
Shane Schroeder: I had about 10 years of fantasy football experience,
mainly with just friends in leagues we have set up for fun. I have also
played in some of the free leagues on the internet and have enjoyed that,
but I was interested in how I would match up against others in a more
competitive league. When the 2008 football season was getting closer,
it seemed as though I was going to be in only the one league that I host
at my house. That was just not enough, though, so I decided to enter a
league online. After some research, I found the FFOC. It seemed too good
to be true, so I gave it a shot.
RH: What was your motivation for entering the FFOC last season?
62
SS: My strategy at the draft was to try to get the best players available,
but I also like to load up on running backs because they seem to get
the most touches and have performed well for me in the past. The other
reason I feel loading up on running backs is good is because they have a
tendency to be more injury-prone due to the amount of abuse they take
week after week. I think one of the bigger fantasy strategies would have
to be finding that sleeper or late-round pick that happens to perform at a
higher level than expected. Making the right call on your weekly starting
lineup can be hard and also make or break a season, but luck is the most
important thing!
SS: Winning the $1,000,000, of course. It is life changing. Meeting Jerry
Rice was awesome. He is a great guy and the best receiver of all time.
Just being in Las Vegas at the Bellagio around all the FFOC participants
and football fans, etc. was great and something I will never forget.
RH: How has your life changed now that you are the world’s first
Fantasy Football Millionaire?
SS: My life has changed in many ways. I now have the opportunity to be
more involved in fantasy football, and I have done numerous interviews,
which have all been fun. I now have to learn a different way to live and
make sure I make the right decisions financially so that I don’t lose all
the money I have won. Being able to help my family out financially felt
great, and it was always something I have wanted to do. Life became a
lot busier, and it seems like it just keeps getting more and more busy as
time goes by.
RH: What is the first thing you bought with your $1,000,000
grand prize?
SS: Well, due to the fact I won $1,000,000 and have not played in a lot of
leagues like this, I have to say the FFOC is the best league out there. It
definitely beats the garage leagues I have been in, where the most I have
ever won is $800. Plus, I never had the opportunity to meet Jerry Rice or
stay in the Bellagio in those leagues. Sorry to all the general managers
who I have offended! It is really hard to explain. It has been great, and even
though I have not been in a lot of different leagues, just do your research
and you will understand how much better the FFOC is compared to other
leagues. The payouts are amazing, and the entry fees are reasonable.
SS: The first thing I bought was a boat. It was something I have wanted for
years. That said, paying off my bills and helping my parents was an even
greater feeling. Everyone dreams about winning the lottery, knowing that
it probably will never happen. When I won the FFOC, I couldn’t believe it.
It almost didn’t even seem real. I mean, it’s $1,000,000! I have never had
the opportunity to live like that, but I am going to learn soon. Learning how
to live with that amount of money is a daily job, especially in this economy.
I have always known how to survive and live a decent life. Now I have to
learn how to manage money at a much higher level. I guess it is a good
thing, and it has been fun.
RH: How many teams did you plan on entering into the
FFOC this season?
RH: How good of a chance do you think you have at successfully
defending your FFOC title in 2009?
SS: I had planned on entering just one team for $125, but when I saw I
could get a deal on a three-team package, I ended up doing that. Doing
the draft is a good part of the fun, anyway, so it gave me three chances to
draft and gave me a better opportunity to win. I later found out that a lot
of people had entered as many as 25 teams. I have not yet decided how
many teams to enter this year, but I am getting excited for the season to
start once again.
SS: I don’t really know how good of a chance I have in winning the FFOC
again, but I am sure going to try. In fantasy football, you have to know a
lot about football - that has been shown by some of the people who have
won on numerous occasions in many different leagues - but luck also
plays a role, and I can’t wait to see if it will strike again in 2009.
RH: How has your strategy in the FFOC changed this season?
SS: I know I will decrease my odds by saying this, but you need to join
the league first. I waited 10 years until I played in an online league, but I
guess I picked the right one with the FFOC. You can’t win if you don’t play.
Secondly, I would tell others to make sure they understand the league
rules. They should also understand the game and how the scoring system
works. They should do research on players, check rankings and player
projections from numerous magazines and internet sources, but they
shouldn’t be afraid to make their own decisions. You have to go with your
gut. After all that, just keep track of the season and understand the matchups. After all, it is not over until the final week.
SS: I don’t know if it has changed, but I do know that I try to look deeper
into who I think may have a good year. Last season, a lot of rookie draft
picks had great fantasy years, and it’s interesting season to season to see
all the new faces on different teams. Who will have the breakout year and
who will be a bust?
RH: What was the best part about the Las Vegas Main Event?
RH: Do you have any advice for first-time FFOC participants?

Next year this game will grow and be
even bigger and better.
Jerry Rice,
Scoring for the Referral Bracket is similar to the scoring for
the July and August Brackets. Beginning in Week 11 and continuing
through Week 14, there is a cut line such that the top percentage of
teams with the highest weekly point totals advance and the bottom percentage of teams are eliminated from the Referral Bracket. Based on
Week 15 point totals, the top 10 teams in the Referral Bracket advance
to Week 16 to compete for the Referral Bracket cash prizes and each
team owner receives a trip to the 2009 Las Vegas Main Event festivities.
After Week 16, the top 3 teams in the Referral Bracket win cash prizes
as determined by the sum of three scores: Average points Week 1
through Week 9 + Average points Week 10 through Week 15 +
Week 16 points

“
Just wanted to thank the FFOC for a really fun year. I am in a few other high-stakes
leagues, and actually paid more
attention to this league than the others.
Great concept. I’m looking forward to
next year, as I unfortunately only lasted to
Week 11 last time.
“
”
The system in place is more like the
NFL than any roto league I’ve ever played
in. There are 3 distinct levels of the season:
Weeks 1-9 is the regular season, Weeks
10-15 are the Playoffs and Week 16 is
the Super Bowl.
“
”
This is wicked. I love the format, and
I am hooked. This is the best money I have
spent on entertainment in a long time.
”
“
I will be looking at five ten packs
for next year’s contest. You really are
going to have a monster of a contest on
your hands.
“
”
FFOC, you have outdone yourself on
this one. FFOC.com will blow up the fantasy
football world for years to come and will
quickly become the #1 fantasy football game
to invest in! ROCK ON!
“
“
”
Mind-blowing! Beyond my expectations. Big props to all at the FFOC...
Fantasy football Nirvana.
