Jesus reads from the
synagogue scroll about a
time of peace and justice
and proclaims freedom for
all (LK chapter 4 vs 17b-19).
What kind of freedom does Jesus offer? An answer to the
above question some 2000 years since Christ’s death is evident
in Jesus’ prayer to God in Heaven before he departed; “Father
that they may all be one.”(JN.17 verse 21). Yes, I think this is
the freedom that we should seek; Unity with each other especially where there may be divisions. Sometimes from a human
point of view there may be little that we can do to heal a division, but looking to Christ with his arms opened wide on the
cross should re-assure us that he embraces all of us to Himself.
Disunity is everywhere; in families, churches, clubs, sports,
towns. However, Jesus’ priestly prayer for Unity within the
body of believers is most immediate when we look at a town or
city with the many different steeples and church facades that
house the people of God for worship and prayer and more and
more storefront type houses of prayer and auditorium like
Christian houses of worship are making an appearance.
Sometimes we talk about “mainline” Christian churches
(Lutheran, Episcopal, Methodist, Presbyterian, Congregational)
as though they are very close to our Roman Catholic expression
leaving Baptist and Evangelicals as a separate entity. But more
and more it seems that because of ‘respect for life’ issues our
affinity seems to be more with the later group than the “main
line” churches. Liturgical affinity exists with the “main line”
group of Christians, but practical shared faith is often finding
evangelicals and Baptists working together with the Catholic
people for “outreach” programs such as food kitchens, housing,
and prison ministry. Our ‘LOVE’ (LOA) group at St. Rita’s is
a good example with the ‘sharing a meal’ for those in need each
month with you the parishioners giving donations of food, time
and/or money as a collaborative effort with the nearby Baptist
church. Also, St. Vincent DePaul Society reaches out to many
in our area requesting a ‘helping hand’ regardless of religion or
lifestyle. And Catholic Charities of our diocese supports life
programs by offering counselling and assistance to expectant
and new mothers and fathers through the ‘BABY BOTTLE
BOMERANG” request for loose change and with diocesan support. These bottles have been given out this week for you to
return in another week filled with your spare change.. Each
month too our Catholic charities has an outreach for medical
assistance thru the St. Brother Andre Bessette, C.S.C. clinic a
couple of times a month on Saturday's.
So Jesus’ prayer for unity in the body of Christ is being
realized right here/right now. But we need to continually pray
for greater unity. Tomorrow (Monday, January 25th) with the
Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul we will end an Octave time
of prayer called the “week of Prayer for Christian Unity”. Prayer themes perused were for the Evangelization of Peoples, for
Persecuted Christians, Various Needs within the body of Christ
and finally for Unity itself in the body of Christ as we conclude
this special time of Prayer and extend it into the Year. May we
continually strive to be ‘One in the Body of Christ’ here at St.
Rita’s.

Evangelii Gauidium 5 min
An evangelizing community is also supportive,
standing by people at every step of the way, no matter
how difficult or lengthy this may prove to be. It is
familiar with patient expectation and apostolic
endurance. Evangelization consists mostly of patience
and disregard for constraints of time. (24)

Acompañar
La comunidad evangelizadora se dispone a
«acompañar». Acompaña a la humanidad en todos sus
procesos, por más duros y prolongados que sean. Sabe
de esperas largas y de aguante apostólico. La
evangelización tiene mucho de paciencia, y evita
maltratar límites. (24)
