Faith Formation

Formación de la fe
What is the RCIA?
RCIA stands for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and it is the process through
which persons -& adults and children - join or complete their initiation into the Catholic
Church.
Is the RCIA for me?
The RCIA is for three groups of people:
1. Those who are not baptized.
2. Those who were baptized into another Christian denomination and wish to enter
into full communion with the Catholic Church.
3. Baptized Catholics who were never formed in the Catholic faith and have not
completed their initiation; that is, who have received neither of the sacraments of
Confirmation and Eucharist.
How does the RCIA work?
RCIA consists of four periods of formation which are marked by rituals that celebrate
what has been completed and call a person into the next phase. There is no specific
length of time for each period. The RCIA is a ;journey that "takes as long as it takes,"
according to each individual. The Inquiry or Precatechumenate
1. The Catechumenate
2. The Lenten period of Purification and Enlightenment
3. Mystagogy or a time of deeper understanding of the
"mysteries"

– Amen

The Gospel of Luke 11:11-13: “What
father among you, if his son asks for a fish,
will instead of a fish give him a serpent. Or if
he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?
If you then, who are evil, know how to give
good gifts to your children, how much more
will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit
to those who ask him!”
As we know from our Baptism ceremony
we are all signed on the crown of the head
with the sacred chrism to receive the Holy
Spirit (the gift of God the Father)
intentionally and later ‘fully’ in the
Sacrament of Confirmation when the Bishop
confirms us with the same chrism on the
forehead.
But what happens in between? Hopefully
through the example of our parents and
godparents and other believers we are
encouraged and grow in the faith by learning
prayers, attending Mass and participating in
religious instruction (Faith Formation).
However, we need to know God personally
too. We need to call upon the same Holy
Spirit to enlighten us and guide us. In this
way we become sure footed in our Christian
walk. So indeed let us not tire of asking,
seeking and expect to receive help from God
through the Holy Spirit.

I want a Church
which is poor and for the poor. They have
much to teach us. Not only do they share in
the sensus fidei, but in their difficulties they
know the suffering Christ. We need to let
ourselves be evangelized by them. The new
evangelization
is
an
invitation
to
acknowledge the saving power at work in
their lives and to put them at the center of the
Church’s pilgrim way. (198)

Suggested intercessions in response to acts of violence in our country
For all who suffer from gun violence in our country, for their families, loved ones,
and communities, let us pray to the Lord. For our communities, leaders, and elected
representatives to work earnestly and tirelessly to end racial division in our
country, let us pray to the Lord. For those who wield power and authority to learn
to act with prudence and forbearance, let us pray to the Lord. For our political
leaders to find the courage and wisdom to do what is necessary to put an end to gun violence in
our country, let us pray to the Lord. For justice for those who endure discrimination, and for
healing and reconciliation in our suffering communities, let us pray to the Lord.
For the safety of those who put themselves in harm's way to honestly serve and
protect our communities, let us pray to the Lord. - Amen
