We sincerely thank all the volunteers for their selfless seva, all the donors for their generous donations and all the members for their tremendous support for making 2014 a memorable year. As IACC continues to move forward in redefining itself in many areas, we recognize the needs ahead and are fully prepared to address them with the help of each and every member of the community. We promised you last year, that we will try to cut costs, increase revenue and make our finances transparent. As a result, we have included a financial summary in this newsletter which depicts our improved performance. Our debt has been reduced to a very manageable amount and with your help we hope to make our temple debt free by the end of 2015. As you can see, we still need a lot of support from our donors in enhancing our financial stability. We have attached the minutes of the general body meeting held on December 15th, 2014 for your perusal. Our updated bylaws are at the office and are available upon your request. Our fundraising Gala this year is entitled “Rhythms of India” and will be held on April 11th 2015. Please mark your calendar. We encourage all of you to participate and support the community. The Year 2015 is a major milestone for our temple. We will be celebrating the 5th anniversary of this beautiful temple. We are further pleased to share with you that, Shri. Shastriji, has accepted our invitation to bless and honor our temple on this occasion. This newsletter also contains information about all the upcoming events and festivals of 2015. We have printed 2015 calendars, which can be picked up at the temple, if you have not done so as of yet. Weekly eblast contains important announcements and event information. Please spend one minute of your time to open and glance through it. If, for whatever reason, you are not getting the eblast, we have attached information about how to self-subscribe in this newsletter. If you are still having trouble getting the eblast, please contact Dr. Harishbhai Shah. We are hoping to have our permanent priest soon, once the inspection from INS is complete. Finally we would like to thank the IMA and Past President Dr. Vijay Dave for their generous donation. “ALONE WE CAN DO SO LITTLE, TOGETHER WE CAN DO SO MUCH” On Behalf of The Board of Trustees and Executive Committee Surenda Shah Chairman Board of Trustee Shailesh Bhatt President of the Executive Board NORTHWEST INDIANA HINDU RELIGIOUS CENTER 8605 Merrillville Road • Merrillville, Indiana 46410 www.iacc-nwindiana.org • www.bharatiyatemple-nwindiana.org TENTATIVE CALENDAR OF FESTIVALS AND EVENTS FOR 2015 Holika Dahan . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Thursday, March 5 Ugadi / Chaitra Nvaratri . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Friday, March 20 Akhand Ramayana . . . . . . . .Saturday, March 21 & Sunday, March 22 Rama Navami . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Saturday, March 28 Hanuman Jayanti . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Friday, April 3 Mahavir Jayanti . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Sunday, April 5 Annual Gala . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Saturday, April 11 Vishukani-Malayani New Year . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Tuesday, April 14 Varashpirrapu-Tamil New Year . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Tuesday, April 14 Bangoli New Year . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Tuesday, April 14 Devi Bhagwat and Anni . . . . . . . . .Friday, June 5 till Saturday, June 13 Khumbhabhishekam . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Saturday, June13 Jain Pratistha Anniversary . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Sunday, June 14 India Fest . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Sunday, August 9 Varalakhshmi Vratham . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Friday, August 28 Raksha Bandhan . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Saturday, August 29 Page 2 Janmashtami . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Saturday, September 5 Jain Paryushan . . . . . .Friday, September 10 till Sunday, September 17 Mahavir Janma Vanchan . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Sunday, September 12 Ganesh Chaturthi / Samvantsary . . . . . . . . . . .Thursday, September 17 Navaratri . . . . . . . . . . .Tuesday, October 13 till Wednesday, October 21 Devi Chawaki . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Friday, October 16 Dussehra . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Thursday, Octobver 22 Karwa Chauth . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Friday, October 30 Diwali Cultural Program . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Saturday, Novemeber 7 Mahavir Nirvan / Diwali . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Wednesday, November 11 Diwali Pooja / Sarda Pooja . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Wednesday, November 11 Diwali Annakut . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Saturday, November 14 Tulsi Vivah . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Sunday, November 22 Fall Fundraiser . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Saturday, December 5 Parshvanath Bhagavan Janma . . . . . . . . . . . .Wednesday, December 16 Geeta Jayanthi . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Monday, December 21 *Calendar is prepared according to Chicago time Every Saturday RECURRING EVENTS FOR 2015 Second Saturday of the month Third Saturday of the month First Sunday of the month First Sunday of the month First Sunday of the month Second Sunday of the month Third Sunday of the month Suprabhata Seva Sundarkand Navagraha Abhishekam Ganesh Abhishekam 9am - 10am Venkateshwara Abishekam 9am - 11am Jain Bhavna Jain Satsang Fourth Sunday of the month Rama Abhishekam Sankashti Ganesh Pooja 9:30am - 11:30am 10am - 11am Shiva Abhishekam Satyanarayan Pooja 9:30am - 10am Ammachi Bhajan Third Sunday of the month Third Sunday of the month 8am - 9am Gujarati Satsang Every month Poonam Day Fourth day after Poonam every month 7:15pm 10:45am - 12:30pm 9am - 10am 5pm - 7pm 9am - 10am 5pm - 6:30pm 5pm - 6:30pm NORTHWEST INDIANA HINDU RELIGIOUS CENTER 8605 Merrillville Road • Merrillville, Indiana 46410 www.iacc-nwindiana.org • www.bharatiyatemple-nwindiana.org Page 3 MESSAGE FROM DEVALAYA COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSON Hari Om Devotee, Thank you all for your support all these years. The year started with a rough winter and flooding of the Hall. A significant amount of time was spent to repair the Hall. A new partition was installed. The Foyer and the Hall were partially painted. The trim and damaged wallpaper were changed. Insurance covered most of the cost. The thermostats were changed with an additional remote control capability to monitor the temperature. A majority of the light bulbs were changed to L.E.D. bulbs with a NIPSCO subsidy. The application with Nipsco was filed for tax-exempt status, which has been approved. The application has also been filed for a rebate on the past 3 years of taxes paid on gas and electric bills. Vasisthaji left during the first week of March and we were struggling with a temporary Priest since than. This food is the gift of the whole universe: the earth, the sky, numerous living beings and much hard, loving work. 2. May we eat with mindfulness and gratitude so as to be worthy to receive it. 3. May we recognize and transform our unwholesome mental formations, especially our greed, and learn to eat with moderation. 4. May we keep our compassion alive by eating in such a way that we reduce the suffering of living beings, preserve our planet, and reverse the process of global warming. 5. We accept this food so that we may nurture our sisterhood and brotherhood, strengthen our community, and nourish our ideal of serving all living beings. ! ! We have, with the grace of our God, been blessed with a wonderful community, a Bharatiya Temple, community center and a cohesive group of dedicated volunteers who make every event a fulfilling one. To celebrate this we plan to have a discourse on Devi Bhagwat, a Nav Chandi Yagna and program of participation from our youth while they learn about Ma Durga. There will be a discourse by Shri Giriraj Shashtriji on Devi Bhagwat. As you all know he is well worse in various Hindu Religious texts and a Sanskrit scholar who with his engaging style and melodious voice engages the participants. Highlights of our week celebration: The discourse will start on June 5 in the evening and will continue thru June 11. Our usual Varshik Mahotsav will follow the discourse on June 12th and June 13th, and Jain Pratistha Mahotsav on June 14th. We have a lot planned for you: Devi Chowki on June 7, 2014, Nava Chandi Yagna in the morning of Saturday June 13, a special essay writing competition and a performance by our kids to celebrate Universal mother as Saraswati, Durga and Lakshmi. Visit our Website more often for details @ www.Bharatiyatemple-NWIndiana.org Significance of Goddess Mother: Maa Durga-is the goddess of power and strength. She represents the power of the Supreme Being. She is multi-dimensional with many names like Mahishasuramardini, Sati, Kali, Parvati, Bhawani, Basanti, Amba etc. Durga through all her forms shows the essence of salvation (saving people from danger or sin) and sacrifice. She is the Goddess of wealth (Lakshmi) and also of beauty and knowledge (Saraswati). The Sanskrit word DURGA means a fort or a place that is protected and difficult to reach.
