At its July meeting the
McKenzie United Methodist
Women heard from Becky
Williams, Executive Director of
the Fannin County Family
Crisis Center, about the important work of the Family Crisis
Center, which is located on the
square in Bonham.
The Family Crisis Center
provides counseling and support to individuals in situations
relating to domestic violence
and sexual assault, and has a 24
hour hotline. Its staff works
with the police, courts and other
non-profits. UMW members
were impressed with the important work done by this organization with limited funds and a
small staff.
In the photo above UMW
President Patsy Clark is presenting a check for $100 to
Becky Williams to support the
work of the Center. The Center
has an on-going need for items
such as toys, books, diapers and
personal products to help mothers and children in domestic
violence situations. The UMW
will be collecting these items to
donate to the Center. If you
would like to make donations,
contact any member of the
McKenzie Methodist Church in
Honey Grove or take them
directly to the Family Crisis
Center in Bonham.
It’s that time!!!!

the majority of those that respond.
There is so much to learn of
what, when, how and who about the
great Longhorn State. Information
on its history culture, places and the
greatest asset of all, the people.
Interesting facts: San Angelo was
first called “Over-the River”, Plano’s
nickname is “Balloon Capital of
Texas”, while Lubbock claim to be
the Chrysanthemum Capital of the
World.
The town of Happy is known as
the town without a Frown.
In April 28, 1978 a funeral was h
eld for “Big Al” a 12 ft alligator.
Large deposits of multi-colored
petrified wood gave Palo Pinto
(Painted Post) it’s name.
Texoma, the largest man made
lake in Texas extends into
Oklahoma.
The Texas Rose Festival of Tyler
is the largest floral event in Texas
and First National, the largest steer
ever raised in Texas stood 7 ft. tall at
the shoulders..
People are the greatest assets of
our fine state. Entertainers and Sport
figures are numerous. Many got
their starts from small and local
hometowns, working hard and
determination aided them to achieve
it “BIG”.
Listed are a few of those starting
points. Match them to the celebrities.

Sharline

Executive Director. “We hope
that it will give families who
work during the day an opportunity to come to the Museum at
night with their children.”
To add to the evening venue,
a special presentation by the
Critterman will be offered. The
Critterman presentation is sponsored by McDaniel Dentistry

“We are thrilled to bring this
children’s entertainer to our

LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
Dolly, our FINAL Stray
Rescue Dog, bid Ladonia a
Fond Farewell several weeks
back. She was the last of the
Lifelong Stray dogs the Ladonia
Shelter helped re-home over the
last 18 months. With Dolly, the
Shelter also bids Ladonia a
Fond Farewell.
Our City
Square, Public Housing and
Grocery Store, look much different to us dog lovers today,
and we could not be more
pleased.
We appreciated all the positive support from so many of
the local and even national dog
lovers and even enjoyed the
barbs. Often a Public Critic
myself, a good poke in the chest
can do much good, even if it
was unintentional. Here is one
example:
I must give credit, where
credit is due... Had Mayor Jan
Cooper not called me with a
threat to write a Citation for
"Trespassing, on City Property"
when removing a Dog from the
INHUMANE conditions at the
Ladonia City Dog Hold, and
then publishing those pictures
on the Ladonia Yahoo Group,
Ladonia would still be full of
stray dogs.
With that said,
The Ladonia Shelter wishes all
of Ladonia a fond and public
farewell and look forward to
your support in keeping
Ladonia the Most Humane City
in Fannin County, and eventually all of Texas,,, we should all
do that for Dolly, and about 150
others re-homed before her...,
not for us...

The Vacation Bible School
sponsored by the United
Methodist Church was well
attended last Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday. The
theme of the Bible School was
“Being Good Neighbors”.
Twenty nine young children
were enrolled and there were
seven Junior Leaders. A big
thanks to Karen Pickard who
did a great job as Director. This
community really appreciates
Karen and the workers that
helped with the Bible School.
Workers included Michaela
Rowe and Gabriel Rowe who
led the singing. Other workers
included Faye Caulfield, P.K.
Kirpatrick, Pastor Michael
Rowe, Carolyn Rowe, Wanda
White, Terry and George
Haneke, Morris White, Wanda
Jewett, Anne Lester, Helen
Park, Joyce Nichols, Kathy
Marsh, and Anita Davis. Friday
evening was the Closing
Celebration with a program and
later they had “Jay Dogs”
instead of Dewey Dogs due to
Dewey helping with the rodeo.
Jay Adams and wife Sandy prepared and served 80 “Jay Dogs”
to the children, parents and
workers and then Ed Pickard
took the kids and workers on a
Hay Ride. IT WAS A GOOD
THING!
The Ladonia Rodeo was a
big success this past weekend
with the weather cooperating
and a large turn out. I understand that Michaela Rowe sang
the National Anthem both
Friday and Saturday night and
did a fantastic job. Little 4 year
old Jake Miller son of Jeff and
Amber Miller of Cooper won
the Mutton Bustin contest on
Friday night. Keon Miller son
of Denise Miller of Ladonia
won first place Bronc Riding in
Blue Ridge on Friday night and
first place Bronc Riding in
Ladonia on Saturday night. I
wish I had the names of other
winners, but my news is somewhat limited.
Mary Ann Moss and sister
Jimmie King and Jimmie's
daughter Yvette enjoyed a trip
last week to Colorado and Red
River, New Mexico where the
high temperature there was 75
degrees, they then went on to
Taos, New Mexico where they
shopped and toured the Art
Shops. They spent 3 nights in
Sante Fe where the high was 85
degrees. Their room in Sante Fe
had a balcony where they sat out
and enjoyed their COFFEE and
watched the birds and animals.
The ladies report that it is just
beautiful there and they are
planning another trip to the
same place next year.
Heather and Michael Pearce
spent the week end with Mary
Ann Moss and they enjoyed the
rodeo in Ladonia Saturday
night.
Reuben and Carol Trussell
made a trip to Oklahoma City
Friday and Saturday where they
met Carol's son Brad Campbell
who flew in from New York for
a family reunion. While there
they toured the Oklahoma City
Bombing Site and ate at a good
steak house restaurant. Before
returning home they drove
through the town of Moore,

The God Who Sees Me
By: Reuben Trussell, Pecan Gap
Ray was concerned about the
way he had been feeling and
went to the doctor for his physical. A few days later the doctor
saw Ray walking down the
street with a gorgeous young
lady on his arm. A couple of
days later the doctor spoke to
Ray and said, “You’re really
doing great, aren’t you?” Ray
replied, “Just doing what you
said, Doc: “Get a hot mamma
and be cheerful.” The doctor
said, “I did not say that. I said,
“You got a heart murmur. Be
careful.”
And now, The God Who
Sees Me
For we do not have a high
priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but
we have one who has
been tempted in every
way, just as we are –
yet without sin,
(Hebrews 4:15 NIV).
Let’s face it.
People let us down.
They disappoint us.
And so does God.
Often our experiences
fall short of our
expectations for God
to meet all our needs
the way we think He should,
and like a lover who has been
wronged, we tend to guard our
hearts against future disappointment by lowering our expectations and trust. But make no
mistake about it, God sees. God
understands. He is not aloof.
Read this modern day story
of a woman’s experience. One
day she was sitting on the patio
with my friend Beth and her
stepfather, Sam, waiting for the
grill to heat up before placing
steaks on to cook. Beth’s mom
opened the door and gave Sam
his orders—telling him what to
do and how to do it. When she
went back inside, Sam made a
hand signal, pointing in one ear
and out the other. They all three

laughed. Then he placed his
ruddy hand on Beth’s arm, a
hand worn by years of working
under the hood of cars of every
make and model.
“She was pretty hard on you
growing up, wasn’t she?” he
asked. “You have no idea,”
Beth answered with a sigh.
But Sam did have an idea.
He understood. And that one
simple gesture let her know that
he had peered into her heart and
had seen the truth. The weathered, uneducated country
mechanic had looked under the
hood of her heart with wisdom
and seen the damaged engine
within. A heart, though healed
by Christ, that still felt the phantom pains of a little girl who felt
she was never good enough,
who was constantly told what to
do and how to do it—and who
never did it quite right. Sam saw
her heart, and for that, Beth
loved him.
How like God. He places His
hand on your shoulders, looks
into your eyes, and lets you
know that He understands. “I
see you,” He says. “I see what
you are going through.” Like
Hagar who experienced a sud-
den glory moment with God in
the desert; we too can know
God as El Roi, “the God who
sees me,” (Genesis 16:13).
The book of Hebrews tells us
that we have a High Priest,
Jesus, who understands what we
are going through. He “sympathizes” with our weakness
(Hebrews 4:15). The word
“sympathizes” comes from two
Greek words, sum and pathos,
meaning, “suffer with.” We are
not alone in our suffering and
there are glory moments to be
found in the dark if we will keep
our eyes open to see.
God did not write the story of
your life and then sit back to
watch it play out. He is in the
story with you. As a matter of
fact, He has the leading role.
Oh, we try to butt in and take
the spotlight. We try to push
Him out of the way and take
over the lead. But when we get
to heaven and look at the
playbill, we will see that God
had the leading role all along,
and our names were there in
supporting roles as a display of
His glory.

We would like to thank the
First Responders for extinguishing the fire on the
south side of our pasture.
The fire was due to a
downed power line and it
was in a neighbor's pasture
quickly taking over the fence line. As dry as it
is, our pasture would have burned quickly. We
are so blessed by having such responsible First

Ramblings
By: Lena Shaw
To show their love and
respect for a young man who
worked diligently to keep memories alive of his home town of
Ladonia, and the Ladonia
Rattlers, through books and
cyber messages, Jerry Don
Smith, and to show love and
support to his sister Kay Hall
and her family, a huge crowd
was present at services at First
Baptist Church Wednesday July
10th to say a final farewell.
Visitation was held at the
Church prior to the funeral service and a meal was served following the burial. Those who
were unable to attend one of the
memorials were able to express
sympathy to Kay and her family
at another time. The Class of
1959 has remained close
throughout the years and most
of them were present, as well as
other classes from that era.
Joann Hill of Plano sent an email to Becky Creed with news
and the address of Juanita
Rogers who recently moved
from Sherman to an assisted living facility in Albuquerque,
New Mexico. She will be well
taken care of and loved there
and will live only a short distance from her sister Dee and
family. They will look in on her
often. Her address is: Juanita
Rogers;
The Albuquerque Grand; 1501
Tijeras: Apt. # 164 –W;
Albuquerque, N M,
87106.
She seems to be very happy
and well satisfied there.
Brooklen Nicole Morris will
turn 2 years old on July 21st
(Happy Birthday, Brooklen) and
stays with her grandmother
Cheryl Seilhan, often while her
mother Janelle works. Jenelle
recently passed her National
Registry test and received her
EMT license, both National and
State of Texas. Congratulations,
Jenelle.
Debby Frey is to attend a
family reunion the first
Saturday in August and the
Chamber of Commerce meeting, which is usually on that
date, needs to be changed to the
second Saturday, August 10th.
Mrs. Muriel Burleson seems
to enjoy being with her daughter
and husband Gayle and Jack
Kennedy in Purvis, Mississippi.
She likes watching the chickens,
rabbits, turtles and others of the
animal kingdom. No idle hands
here. Mrs. Burleson doesn’t just
sit with her hands folded. She
crochets, reads and writes about
“Happenings on Azalea Trail”
with the help of her family, who
add photographs, illustrations
and compose a booklet to
enhance the story. The booklets
are very interesting and will be
priceless to the great grandchildren.
Birthday greetings on July
20th to Deborah Adams; on July
21st to Kyler Hester, Kerry
Crews, Bridget Gentry, Shellye
Singleton, Toby Childress and
Brooklen Nicole Morris; on
July 22nd to Kris Crews,
Darlene Houston, Odell Tarpley
and Brad Kant; on July 23rd to
Ricky Snell, Kenneth Yates and
William Kant; on July 25th to
Christi Moon, Leon Hurse and
Peggy Lewis and on July 26th to
Rita Owens and Eric Burnett.
Happy Wedding Anniversary
on July 22nd to Al and Dorothy
Bartley.
Saturday visitors in the home
of Becky Hester were granddaughters Tori and her husband
and Terry and her daughters
Maddison,
Ryleigh
and
Kyleigh.
Please be in prayer for Gary
Don Erwin who underwent surgery Tuesday, July 16th.
It was a warm July day
Saturday the 13th as a huge
crowd gathered on the square to
celebrate the annual Frontier
Days in Ladonia. Rickey Beeler
made the contests and games
exciting with his enthusiasm
and as the odor of the food made
people hungry they enjoyed hot
dogs and other goodies cooked
by the LVFD. Several vendors
set up booths with interesting
items for sale. The Shoot-Out at
High Noon is an event looked
forward to by attendees, and it
was enjoyed by all. It was a time
for ‘coming home’, visiting
with friends and taking part in
the fun. It was a good day.
One of the winners at the
rodeo on Friday night was
young Jase Miller, who is making a name for himself in winning the Mutton Bustin’ contests
in area rodeos.
Herma Jo Crews stays in
touch by phone with former
Ladonia residents and especially the Ladonia High School
Rattlers. She recently talked
with Billy Silman (class Of ’40)
and he had received a pacemaker. Jimmy Ramsey (class of
’49) had undergone surgery.
They were unable to attend the
2013 Rattler Reunion.
Some information about the
Shaw family. Tina attended visitation in Waco Sunday afternoon for the 90 year old mother
of her friend, Sharon. Other
friends will be going with her as
the funeral is Monday and they
all work.
Blake
Shaw
returned
Thursday night from Austin
after attending a training session
with co-workers. Billy Carl
Crews returned Friday from a
business trip to Maryland.
Bettina Crews is pleased that
she has been notified that she
will be teaching kindergarten in
an Austin school. Travis and
Tiffany attended a birthday
party for God child Anna Egan
in Tennessee. Anna is two years
old. Travis spent four days with
his mother, Martha Hornsby
Shaw during her back surgery.
Her sisters also spent time with

Record Attendance at Ladonia’s
48th Annual Rodeo!
Page 3, July 18, 2013 Weekly Gazette & W.C. Mirror
The small town of Ladonia kicked off their 48th Annual Rodeo on the warm, sultry, summer Friday Evening of July 12, 2013. A full load of cowboys and cowgirls were onhand to compete in the rodeo events of bareback riding, saddle bronc, calf roping, team roping, steer doggin’, barrell racing, and bull riding.
Then, due to a cold front in north Texas, early on the beautiful 75 degree Saturday morning, Ladonia’s downtown come alive as vendors, food booths, games, rides, and competitons began.
Flavors of Texas were offered in several food booths, from trinkets and toy vendors to knives vendors to healthcare booths were offered around the town square. Dunkin’ booth, huge blow up
slide, snow cones and cotton candy booths, just to name a few fun things for children attending. Mr. Ricky Beeler, Master of Ceremonies, kept the day running smoothly and on schedule,
including such games as bubble gum blowing, watermelon seed spitting, hula hoop contest, hay bale toss, egg toss, arm wrestling and many more contests and games played during the day
long celebration. Of course, at High Noon, Ladonia is notorious for holding their annual “Shoot Out”. A skit was performed on the south side of the square, which included bad guys riding
in on horseback, hanging a cattle thief and laying him to rest in a coffin, and settling down in the saloon for a drink when the Marshall and Deputies appeared and the shoot out began. “If
you’ve never seen an annual Ladonia High Noon Shoot Out, you’ve missed a real treat!!!
Saturday evening, with a rare July high temperature of 85 degrees, the rodeo brought a record attendance to Ladonia. Traffic was backed as far as they eye could see, even as the rodeo
began at 8:00 p.m. The stands filled to capacity with rodeo fans.
The pivots set, riders began pouring into the arena to kick off the rodeo with a Grand Entry. The American Flag was then flown around the arena via horseback and Johnny Cash’s “Ragged
Ol’ Flag” set the patriotic scene. Prayer was then given over the competing cowboys and cowgirls and for the safety of all those traveling to and from the Ladonia Rodeo.
Saddle bronc and bareback kicked off the rodeo, followed by calf roping, team roping and steer dogging... and then twenty small children rode “Muttin Bustin’” (sheep). Again, if you’ve
never seen children ride sheep, you’ve missed a real treat! Those little guys and gals put their full effort into their beginnings of the ‘rodeo world’. Halftime of the rodeo, all small children
were invited to the center of the arena, each being asked to remove their shoes, boots and sandals and left in a pile. At the word “Go” from the Rodeo Clown, each child ran to the second
clown, back to find and put their shoes back on and then once again back to the Clown. Next came the older children entering the arena. As they formed a line, two calves were released with
ribbons tied to their tails. The many children in attendance chased the two calves until caught and ribbons could be removed.... Prizes were awarded to each child, winning the “Shoe Race”
and the “Calf Chase”.
Barrel racing and Bull Riding excited the entire crowd attending; and just as the rodeo came to a close, FIREWORKS, beautiful fireworks were displayed at the North End of the arena...
and the band began. Curtis Grimes and his band played a variety of tunes for the enormous crowd attending the Saturday night dance. The concrete dance slab was filled to capacity with
dancers of young to the young at heart; and rodeo fans filled the entire stage area... a sight to see, just one more REAL TREAT!
