Coach Steve Guffey, Coach Glen Fields FANS: Weldon and Kristy Foster and daughter Kolie Foster, Ricky Beeler, Debbie Raney, Tony Humphries, Gwen Beeler, and Danny Humphries Fannindel’s State Winners of 1989, attending the ceremonies: Front row (Lto R): Bill Davidson, Jason Fields, Victor McCain; Back row (L to R): Shaun Franklin (Fannindel Assistant Coach), Steve Guffey, Shaquille O’neal (San Antonio Cole), Coach Glen Fields and Eddie Akins. The University Interscholastic League paid respect on Saturday to the 1989 boys high school basketball championship teams from Texas during halftimes of the boys title games. Those who coached and played on the Class 1A state champion Fannindel team of that year likewise recently honored the team with their words. “They were respectful and athletic and did anything I asked them to do and never complained, said Glen Fields, Fannindel’s head coach that season. “When you have respect, you have discipline. They were a well-disciplined ball club.” It showed on the court where Fannindel was honored twice in a row for its sportsmanship. “Those boys, even if the ref made a call they didn’t like, would agree with him,” said Jason Fields, a backup freshman guard on his dad’s team. “They never let anything get in the way of what they wanted which were wins.” Former assistant Steve Guffey agreed: “They would raise their hands if they fouled, and pick up loose balls and hand them to the ref.” Doc’s Corner 1502 West Main Honey Grove 903-378-7104 (Falcon’s 1965 Coach, who coached Glen Fields his Sr year) The senior starting five included 6-4 center Fred Woods, forward Roy Gaffney and guards Bruce Jones, Steve Wilburn and Vic McCain, who had been coached by the elder Fields since grade school. “Other than Fred, we were really small and defense was the name of our game,” said Guffey, who also noted Eddie Akins and Michael Crowley as “big subs” who garnered a lot of playing. A quarter century ago, Fannindel defeated Moulton, 75-58, in the 1A championship game, completing a delayed basketball season for the team. “Many of them had played in the state semifinals in football in December (of 1988),” said Coach Fields, “so we got a late start.” The championship capped a 25-2 basketball season where the starters’ services were not always needed for the entire game. “We got a lot of playing time due to the fact that by the third quarter, a lot of times, we would already be leading by 20-25,” said the younger Fields. “There were not many games where the starters would play a full four quarters. “My dad never believed in running up the score on anybody,” he said. “It didn’t prove anything. All it did was just pad stats. A win is a win, by one or 40 points.” The championship run additionally equated a repeat trip to the state tournament for the Falcons. Shaun Franklin (far left), his two children: Jace and Payton Franklin; Shaquille O’neal of the San Antonio Cole who beat Clarksville (1989) for the State Title in Class 3A; and Coach Glen Fields. “They got beat in the state semifinals (by one) in double overtime my first year,” said Guffey. “The next year, after we won bidistrict, we asked the kids if they wanted to cut down the net. Bruce Jones said ‘we don’t want to cut down this net; we want the one they cut for you at Austin.” It was their goal from day one. “I thought this (coaching) was easy after my first two years at Fannindel,” he said. “It took years to get back down there (to state).” The Falcons had a 58-4 record during Guffey’s first two years on staff — and a 112-12 mark during the four-year varsity careers of the same starting five. Coach Fields said half the losses came when the starters were freshmen. “The team itself was very polite and well respected,” said the younger Fields. “It was the reason why they were so good at what they did.” Said Guffey: “I’m proud to have been one of their coaches. They were the classiest bunch of kids I have been around.” - See more at: http://heralddemocrat.com/sports/varsity/flying-high-falcons-mark25-years-state-title#sthash.gaIU160k.dpuf DOC’S COUNTRY COOKING New Hours - Open Sunday thru Wednesday 6a.m til 2 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday 6 a.m. til 8 p.m. Homemade Pies Thanks for giving us this opportunity! After all, the malicious software and malware that is in the wild changes in a never ending kaleidoscope of dangerous code. To combat this, many malware detection programs monitor program behaviors, called heuristic detection, to catch previously unrecognized malware. Other programs use system monitoring, network traffic detection and all of the above at once in order to be more accurate. And still many of us encounter malware on a regular basis. Here are common signs you've been affected by malware and what to do in the event of detection. Please note that in all cases, the number one recommendation is to completely restore your system to a known good state before proceeding. In almost all situations this means formatting the hard drive and restoring all programs and data. The recovery steps listed in each item below are the recommendations to follow if you don't want to do a full restore -- but again, a full restore is always a better option, risk-wise. Unwanted browser toolbars A common sign of exploitation: Your browser has multiple new toolbars with names that seem to indicate the toolbar is supposed to help you. Unless you recognize the toolbar as coming from a very well-known vendor, it's time to dump the bogus toolbar. What to do: Most browsers allow you to review installed and active toolbars. Remove any you didn't absolutely want to install. When in doubt, remove it. If the bogus toolbar isn't listed there or you can't easily remove it, see if your browser has an option to reset the browser back to its default settings. If this doesn't work, follow the instructions listed below for fake antivirus messages. You can usually avoid malicious toolbars by making sure that all your software is fully patched and by being on the lookout for free software that installs these tool bars. Hint: Read the licensing agreement. Toolbar installs are often pointed out in the licensing agreements that most people don't read. Redirected Internet searches Many black hats make their living by redirecting your browser somewhere other than you want to go. The hacker gets paid by getting your clicks to appear on someone else's website, often those who don't know that the clicks to their site are from malicious redirection. You can often spot this type of malware by typing a few very common words (for example, "puppy" or "goldfish") into Internet search engines and checking to see whether the same websites appear in the results -- almost always with no actual relevance to your terms. In general, if you have bogus toolbar programs, you're also being redirected. Users who really want to confirm can sniff their own browser or network traffic. The traffic sent and returned will always be distinctly different on a compromised computer vs. an uncompromised computer. What to do: Follow the same instructions as above. Usually removing the bogus toolbars and programs is enough to get rid of malicious redirection. Frequent random popups This popular sign that you've been hacked is also one of the more annoying ones. When you're getting random browser pop-ups from websites that don't normally generate them, your system has been compromised. I'm constantly amazed about which websites, legitimate and otherwise, can bypass your browser's anti-pop-up mechanisms. It's like battling email spam, but worse. What to do: Not to sound like a broken record, but typically random pop-ups are generated by one of the previous malicious mechanisms noted above. You'll need to get rid of bogus toolbars and other programs if you even hope to get rid of the pop-ups. Fake antivirus messages In slight decline these days, fake antivirus warning messages are among the surest signs that your system has been compromised. What most people don't realize is that by the time they see the fake antivirus warning, the damage has been done. Clicking No or Cancel to stop the fake virus scan is too little, too late. Why does the malicious program bother with the "antivirus warning"? This is because the fake scan, which always finds tons of "viruses," is a lure to buy their product. Clicking on the provided link sends you to a professional-looking website, complete with glowing letters of recommendation. There, they ask you for your credit card number and billing information. You'd be surprised how many people get tricked into providing personal financial informa- tion. The bad guys gain complete control of your system and get your credit card or banking information. For bad guys, it's the Holy Grail of hacking. What to do: As soon as you notice the fake antivirus warning message, power down your computer. (Note: This requires knowing what your legitimate antivirus program's warning looks like.) The sooner you power off your computer, the better. Boot up the computer system in Safe Mode, No Networking, and try to uninstall the newly installed software. Either way, follow up by trying to restore your system to a state previous to the exploitation. If successful, test the computer in regular mode and make sure that the fake antivirus warnings are gone. Then follow up with a complete antivirus scan. Oftentimes, the scanner will find other sneak remnants left behind. Other users receive bogus emails from your email account This is the one scenario where you might be OK. It's fairly common for people in our contacts list to receive malicious emails from us. These days it's more common for malicious emails to be sent to some but not everyone in your email address book. If it's just a few addresses and not everyone in your email list, then more than likely your computer hasn't been compromised (at least with an email address-hunting malware program). These days malware programs and hackers often pull email addresses and contact lists from social media sites, but doing so means obtaining a very incomplete list of your contacts' email addresses. Although not always the case, the bogus emails they send to your friends often don't have your email address as the sender. It may have your name, but not your correct email address. If this is the case, then usually your computer is safe. What to do: If one or more of your contacts report receiving bogus emails claiming to be from you, do your due diligence and run a complete antivirus scan on your computer, followed by looking for unwanted installed programs and toolbars. Often it's nothing to worry about, but it can't hurt to do a little health check when this happens. Your online passwords suddenly change If one or more of your online passwords suddenly change, you've more than likely been hacked -- or at least that online service has been hacked. In this particular scenario, usually what has happened is that the victim responded to an authentic-looking phish email that purportedly claimed to be from the service that ends up with the changed password. The bad guy collects the logon information, logs on, changes the password (and other information to complicate recovery), and uses the service to steal money from the victim or the victim's acquaintances (while pretending to be the victim). What to do: If the scam is widespread and many acquaintances you know are being reached out to, immediately notify all your contacts about your compromised account. Do this to minimize the damage being done to others by your mistake. Second, contact the online service to report the compromised account. Most online services are used to this sort of maliciousness and can quickly get the account back under your control with a new password in a few minutes. Some services even have the whole process automated. A few services even have a "My friend's been hacked!" button that lets your friends start the process. This is helpful, because your friends often know your account has been compromised before you do. If the compromised logon information is used on other websites, immediately change passwords and pertinent information on the other sites. Websites rarely, if ever, send emails asking you to provide your logon information. When in doubt, go to the website directly (don't use the links sent to you in email) and see if the same information is being requested when you log on using the legitimate method. You can also call the service via their phone line or email them to report the received phish email or to confirm its validity. Lastly, consider using online services that provide two-factor authentication. It makes your account much harder to steal. Unexpected software installs Unwanted and unexpected software installs are a big sign that your computer system has likely encountered a malicious user or website. Most malware programs these days are Trojans and worms, and they typically install themselves like legitimate programs. Oftentimes the unwanted software is legally installed by other programs, so read your license agreements. Frequently, I'll read license agreements that plainly state that they will be installing one or more other programs. Sometimes you can opt out of these other installed programs; other times you can't. What to do: There are many free programs that show you all your installed programs and let you selectively disable them. Most malware programs can be found with these tools. The hard part is determining what is and what isn't legitimate. When in doubt, disable the unrecognized program, reboot the PC, and re-enable the program only if some needed functionality is no longer working. Your mouse moves between programs and makes valid selections While mouse pointers often move randomly, usually due to hardware problems, it can be a symptom of a serious security breach. If the movements involve making the correct choices to run particular programs, malicious humans are somewhere involved. While not as common as other attacks, many hackers will break into a computer, wait for it to be idle for a long time (like after midnight), then try to steal your money. Hackers will break into bank accounts and transfer money, trade your stocks, and do all sorts of things, all designed to separate you from your cash. What to do: If your computer "wakes up" one night, take a minute before turning it off to determine what the intruders are interested in. Don't let them rob you, but it will be useful to see what things they are looking at and trying to compromise. If you have a cell phone handy, take a few pictures to document their tasks. As soon as practical, power off the computer. Unhook it from the network and call in the professionals. This is the one time that you're going to need expert help. As soon as possible, using another known clean computer, immediately change all your other logon names and passwords. Check your bank account transaction histories, stock accounts, and so forth. A complete system restore of the computer is the only option you should choose for recovery. But if you've lost any money, make sure to let the forensics team make a copy first. If you've suffered a loss, call law enforcement and file a case. You'll need this information to best recover your real money losses, if any. Take this seriously it can have long term effects and needs immediate action. Your security software, Task Manager, or Registry Editor is disabled and can't be restarted If you notice that your security software is disabled and you didn't do it, you're probably under attack -- especially if you try to start Task Manager or Registry Editor and they won't start, start and disappear, or start in a reduced state. This is a very common symptom for comprised system. What to do: You should really perform a complete restore because there is no telling what has happened. But if you want to try something less drastic first, research the many methods on how to restore the lost functionality (any Internet search engine will return lots of results), then restart your computer in Safe Mode and start the hard work. I say "hard work" because usually it isn't easy or quick. Often, I have to try a handful of different methods to find one that works. Precede restoring your software by getting rid of the malware program. Your account is missing money or you get calls for payment of shipped goods you did not order. Missing money means, lots of money. Hackers don't usually steal a little money. They like to transfer everything or nearly everything, often to a foreign exchange or bank. Usually it begins by your computer being compromised or from you responding to a fake phish from your bank. In any case, the Black Hats log on to your account, changes your contact information, and transfer large sums of money to themselves. What to do: In most cases you are in luck because most financial institutions will replace the stolen funds (especially if they can stop the transaction before the damage is truly done). However, there have been many cases where the courts have ruled it was the customer's responsibility to not be hacked, and it's up to the financial institution to decide whether they will make restitution to you. If you're trying to prevent this from happening in the first place, turn on transaction alerts that send text alerts to you when something unusual is happening. Many financial institutions allow you to set thresholds on transaction amounts, and if the threshold is exceeded or it goes to a foreign country, you'll be warned. Unfortunately, many times the bad guys reset the alerts or your contact information before they steal your money. So make sure your financial institution sends you alerts anytime your contact information or alerting choices are changed. Remember if your system is compromised . . . First, change all your logon names and passwords (not just the one related to the single compromised account), if money is missing or fraud has been committed call law enforcement, get a case going, and start monitoring your credit. You'll probably spend months trying to clear up all the bogus transactions committed in your name, but you should be able to undo most, if not all, of the damage. Denton County Feral Hog Abatement Demonstration, Mar 22 By: Article by Robert Burns 903-834-6191 [email protected] By: Judy Conejo & Denise Odom Nuclear medicine imaging techniques such as X-rays, MRI scanners, CAT scans and ultrasound are non-invasive methods to look inside the human body to detect disease or injury. Each of these techniques is useful for different conditions and different parts of the body. DID YOU KNOW THAT? Red River Regional Hospital (RRRH) offers Nuclear Medicine Diagnostic Studies such as CAT scans and Bone Scans? Your doctor does not need to be local to have your testing done here? You may bring in your doctor’s orders and we will schedule your tests at a time that is convenient for you, even after regular working hours? When you have your nuclear studies done at RRRH, your doctor will be the report quickly, and quality images are also stored on a disc for you if you want to take the report to your doctor. Nuclear studies done at RRRH are used to detect coronary artery disease, evaluate the ventricular heart wall motion, bone imaging to detect metastases, osteomyelitis, lesions, fractures and helps evaluate causes of pain. Diagnostic tests for pulmonary embolisms, chronic liver disease, lesions, and tumors, biliary tract and gallbladder function, gastrointestinal bleeding, gastric and renal function studies, and thyroid studies are also performed at RRRH. You can ask your doctor to order your tests from Red River Regional Hospital, because it is convenient for you, and you are assured of receiving excellent healthcare and medical testing. biologist, Fort Worth, will discuss and demonstrate the most cost effective methods of control, said Brandon Boughen, AgriLife Extension agent for Denton County. The demonstration is free and open to the public. “We all know that feral hogs are a nuisance in Denton County; that they destroy crops and pasture, and impose huge economic hardships on producers,” Boughen said. “Our intention is to show landowners and producers how they can build a trap and capture these destructive animals – even with limited funds. Henry will also discuss using snares, as well as control of coyotes, bobcats and vultures.” Boughen said as the spring calving season is beginning and feral hogs may prey on newborn calves, it’s important to be proactive in learning control methods. “Most producers do not have a threshold for the number of calves they can lose and still break even, so no loss is acceptable,” he said. For more information contact Boughen or Pamela Hill at 940349-2894. By: Dorothy Haney The Annual membership meeting will be held Saturday, March 22 at 2:00 PM at the Petty Baptist Church fellowship Hall. Three Directors will be elected for two year terms. You know it’s bad when the lady behind the counter at the DMV is apologizing to you. First off, if your kid isn’t old enough to need a driver’s test, fall on your knees and thank God. Not because your insurance hasn’t yet exploded. Not because the neighbors don’t run outside and grab their kids when yours picks up the car keys. Not because you don’t yet have the pleasure of hearing said kid whine for a car and then whine for gas money. No. Thank your lucky stars because you haven’t had to enter the abyss known as the DMV. That’s the Department of Motor Vehicles to most folks but it’s the Don’t MoVe office if you’ve ever been there. Let’s start with Greenville. Nice, big, cleanish, new and air-conditioned. It has lots of seats and the windows are tinted so the harsh afternoon sun doesn’t bake you or burn your retinas. You go there to renew your driver’s license, change the address on your driver’s license, haul your kid for a driver’s written test and the deadly do not pass go do not collect $200 fake dollars driving exam. Only the Greenville DMV must have clout because they only administer driver’s tests when a butterfly flaps its wings in Japan at the same time a hippo farts on the Serengeti. In other words, not freaking much. I learned this after kid #2 went for his driver’s test. He came, he saw, he failed it. Which is when we learned that everyone fails the driver’s exam in Greenville. Get thee to Bonham. It’s better. Golden West Apartments: Now Accepting Applications for 1 & 2 Bedroom Apartments. Water, sewer, garbage, appliances, lawn maintenance provided. Laundry facility. All I found was chaos and little old ladies losing their last bit of patience. The good thing about small towns is everyone will talk to everyone else whether they know you or not. I know that one lady had a backyard full of “good looking firemen” because a tree fell in her back yard and her next door neighbor tripped over it and broke her collar bone. The dang EMTs were two blocks over but couldn’t find her address so after 30 min, she called 911 back and told them to send every hot-bodied fireman in the county. Apparently, they did. She interrupted her story long enough to shout, “DON’T PAY THEM ANY ATTENTION, HON. THEIR BRAINS ARE MUSH FROM ALL THE DRUGS THEY BEEN DOING.” When the two tattooed skin headed dudes turned around and glared at her she added “YEAH DON’T THINK I DON’T KNOW WHO YOU ARE. NOW STOP CUTTING IN LINE OR I’LL CALL YOUR MAMA, YEAH BOY.” All southerners end sentences with “yeah boy” when they absolutely positively mean it. You know what? Those boys went back down the DON’T STAND IN THE HALL hall. When we finally got to the DMV lady (who was fresh off lunch and relieved the original DMV lady), we were informed we couldn’t do the test despite an appointment and why were waiting in line anyway? For tests you just walk up and check in. I tried that and was told THOU SHALL NOT PASS. And not from Grandma Hot Body Heaven Moses either. I The City of Honey Grove Clean up Week will begin Friday March 14, 2014 and end on Saturday March 22, 2014. Citizens inside the city limits may begin putting debris and “junk” items on the curbside on March 13th. For curbside pickup, you MUST call to put your name on the list at City Hall. If you fail to comply with this request, you could cause the City to not pick up your trash and you will be responsible for hauling your own, no matter what the circumstance. Please don’t block your poly cart to allow the trash service to collect household garbage. For the citizen’s convenience, there will be open top containers, for Honey Grove Water customers ONLY, to haul their own trash and junk from Friday March 14th until Saturday March 22nd. The City urges anyone that has pickups, trailers or someone that is able to haul their own junk, to please do so. Due to Budget cuts, the man power for the City is minimal. Sanitation Solutions will be delivering Open Top Containers to the Milford Ag lot located at South 5th and Commerce on Friday March 14th. The City has requested that all citizens planning on having their junk picked up MUST separate all brush from junk, or the pile will NOT be picked up. We are asking that you comply with this request. The City takes the brush to a separate location and this will simplify the pick up. Tires, batteries, chemical and fertilizer products and containers, concrete, dead animals, any appliance with Freon and paint will not be picked up or accept- Pharmacists Eugene Kegans & Kacey Blackerby GARAGE SALE? Collin, Leonard, Tx 587-3363 don’t mean to be rude, but why don’t yall have a take a number thingie? There are old fellas out front who were here long before some of us but no one went out and got them. “They’ve been here since God was a baby. Nothing better to do I guess.” I’m not so sure the rest of the folks standing up front would agree with that logic, but OK. I made another appointment. Made her repeat three times what we needed and why just incase the rules change before we get out. Come to find out, the guy who made our last appointment is no longer there. Well golly gee, I wonder why? We have to wait another two weeks and spend two more days just to get in a car with an unapologetically bored government employee so said DMV Diva can tell us if kid #2 should be on the open road. Hindus looking for a religious experience wouldn’t take that job. Cows on crack drive better than teenagers. Heck, my last greyhound liked to drive with his butt-all 90 pounds of him and HE drove better than kid #1 and they gave her a license. I tell you what, next trip I’m yanking down those DO NOT STAND IN HALL posters, numbering them and handing them out to everyone. At least we can have a little country order, yeah boy. Clean Up Week O. M. G. www.leonardpharmacy.net 903-227-7960 First, it’s a maze. You walk into a building that looks like it’s held up with bailing wire and duct tape, which isn’t far off from the truth. It’s actually duct tape and brightly colored papers that scream DO NOT STAND IN THE HALL and DO NOT BLOCK THE DOOR. During the 2.5 hours I was there, I didn’t see anyone other than fellow confused folks even navigating said hall much less blocking anything. No doors opened. No DMV people milled about. When you walk in, the first thing that hits you is the heat. I assure you it is 100% body heat. There were enough old guys sitting up front holding white papers in their hands to qualify as a nursing home. There is one window that looked officalish and nary a soul manning it. After standing around wideeyed for a bit, a nice lady took pity on me and said “The driver’s license place is down that hall around the corner.” I thanked her and moved into the realm of DO NOT STAND, DO NOT TOUCH, DO NOT TAKE PHONE CALLS. After following the signs of stuff not to do, I found the hut housing exactly one DMV lady and 8 chairs occupied by 8 weary souls. There is no take a number. There is no line. There is no order of any kind. What the hell? I’m fairly certain that they have take a number kiosks in hell so the DMV should at least have a way of keeping up with who is next. But no. You just guess and wait. Now I’ve been to the DMV in Dallas people and let me tell you that place is a pit but a well run pit. You take a number, find a seat or stab someone and steal his or hers but there is ORDER. The City crew will meet between 7:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. on Saturday March 22nd at South 5th and Commerce, with available tractors, trucks and backhoes. City wide participation depends on the annual clean-up continuing for Honey Grove. Please contact Linda or Jaci at City Hall at 903-3782323 or 903-378-3033, to have your name put on the list for pick-up, ONLY if you are not able or have no means to haul your own trash. We look forward to seeing everyone. If the weather does hinder the scheduled city clean-up, the City would appreciate it if those of you that are able, haul the items you have placed by your property to the Containers located between 5th and 6th Street on Commerce Street. Rain will cause water to stand and it is a breeding place for mosquitoes and snakes. We urge everyone to make an extra effort to haul your own items and to help us clean up Honey Grove. Debby Crofford spent some time with two of her grandsons recently. She drove by Burnet and picked Alex up then the two of them drove on to San Marcos to visit with Chris Crumb. All of them enjoyed being together. Best wishes to the grandson of Eddie and Debbie Frey who was taken to the hospital this week; with thoughts and prayers for him and his family that healing will be swift and sure. Thanks to those who attended the 25th anniversary of the Falcon State Championship Winners which was held in Austin and sent pictures of the event. The team and coaches were also added to the Hall of Fame. Since Shaq Oniell played with an AAA team and they also won State it was a treat for players, friends and family to meet him. Both Shaun Franklin’s sons were shown in a picture standing on either side of him. The meeting place for the Fellowship breakfast of First Baptist Church was changed to Gloria’s Kitchen and eight members in addition to Lawrence and Gloria, were present Saturday morning to enjoy the good meal. Thomas Hoover has had surgery and is still not back to his normal health so it was good that he and Nancy were able to attend. Also attending were Tom and Oma Hulsey, Vernon Hill, Becky Hester, Lavonne Duncan and Lena Shaw. It was a full house as there were many others enjoying breakfast, among them Todd and Anita Akers and their pretty daughter; Gail Pevey, Ted Maines (members of the Chamber of Commerce), Lyndon Worden, Gary and Debbie Nichols, Jan Cooper, Harold Chennault, Syldean Davis, Sue Burnett, Robert Waldrip, Robert Carter, June Roderick and several others. Mark your calendars for the twice 40 birthday celebration for June on May 24th at the Community Center in Pecan Gap. If you try to reach Cleo Edlin by the number listed in the phone book, it will not work as she has replaced it with a cell phone. Cleo once lived in the same community as the Houchin family and received a call Friday from Billie Joyce Houchin Caudle that Rayburn Houchin’s health is in decline. He has had an increase in the number of dialysis treatments which he has been undergoing for some time. Please keep him in your prayers. It is a joy to see some of the historic homes being brought back to life. The home of the late Albert and Oleta Brown on East Main is being restored and is already beginning to look as it once did. The Hill home (aka. The Myrick Pllace) is slowly taking shape, and the big Haden house on Bonham Street is now occupied. Three seats are available for election to the Fannindel School Board in May. There will be no election, however, as only three have filed and are running unopposed. Gwen Beeler has filed for the Pecan Gap seat and Jimmy Rhodes and Mandy Duplechan have filed for the two Ladonia seats. Titus Gable was honored on his sixth birthday recently in Mt. Pleasant. His great grandmother, Wanetha Jones and grandmother Karen Pickard enjoyed the day with him, his parents and his playmates. Birthday greetings on March 12th to Kathy Blackmon and Floyd Aubrey, Jr.; on March 13th to Freddy Hulsey; on March 14th to Jo Nan Mills Miller; on March 15th to Fannie Judkins Harris and Sherry Harris; on March 16th to Kyle Dawson, Kelli Braley Burnett and Barbara Rittenberry Locke; on March 17th to Randal Reel; on March 18th to Micah Duncan and Amber Adams; and on March 19th to Janice Franklin Connell and Deborah Seibenhausen. Happy Wedding Anniversary on March 15th to John and Michelle Verner! Although Tom Hulsey is retired he remains as a Consultant for his place of work. He recently attended a seminar with employees of the company at Nashville, Tennessee. Fred and Janie Hulsey of Wiley visited with Tom and Oma Hulsey in Ladonia Friday evening and they drove to Windom to the Feed Sack for a meal. The date for VBS at First Baptist Ladonia has been set. It will be held from July 16th through the 19th. Students will register on July 16th and three days of learning and fun will be July 17th through the 19th in the evening between the hours of 6:00 and 8:00 p. m. The old man said, "I did, Senor. I told you he don't look so good." Words Have Meaning! Randy decided that he needed another horse. He heard about an old Mexican man who had a horse for sale and gave him a call. The old man said the horse was well broken, gentle enough for his grandchildren to ride, and that he wanted $250 for him. Suspiciously, Randy said, "$250 isn't much for that kind of horse. What's wrong with him?" The old man said, "He don't look so good." Because the price was right, Randy decided to go over and take a look at the horse. The old Mexican man took him out to the corral and there was a teenage granddaughter leading a good-looking bay gelding around with a piece of baler twine and 3 little kids on his back. Randy had seen enough... he slapped leather, peeled off $250 in cash before the old man could raise the price, and included $20 extra for delivery. The next morning, the gelding was in his corral. He went out, saddled him up, and rode down to the creek... where the bay immediately walked off the creek bank. As they fell 5 feet into the water, Randy bailed off and watched in dismay as the horse got up, ran down the creek until he bounced off a big boulder, took a left and hit a tree dead-on and then stood there, shaking. Randy realized the horse was blind. He led the horse home, unsaddled him, went to the house and immediately called the old Mexican man. "Why didn't you tell me If Randy had understood the meaning of the old Mexican man’s words the story would have turned out differently. The Bible has much to say about words … some words are like a treasure. We examined that a few weeks ago. Proverbs 25:11 reads, “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.” Well thought out words, carefully selected words, can be a blessing to the ears of their recipient. The Bible commends us when we speak words that build up, encourage and bless others. The Bible also contains many warnings about words and their destructive power. In the New Testament Book of James we find such a warning. In James 3:6, “And the tongue is like a fire. It is a world of wrong, occupying its place in our bodies and spreading evil through our whole being. It sets on fire the entire course of our existence with the fire that comes to it from hell itself.” Consider the following, the Quote of the Day from Black Truth News: Great minds talk about ideas. Average minds talk about things. Small minds talk about people. Empty minds talk about each other. -Unknown AuthorThe Bible also gives a warning to people who use words to harm others. Matthew 23 speaks of Hypocrisy … people who, through Words give one impression of who they are when, in reality, they are the opposite. Galatians 5:20; I Corinthians Got An Upcoming Event? "I live on County Road 128," fumed Ronnie, "And I want you to move the "Deer Crossing" sign that's on that sharp curve near Ben Franklin." The foreman asked, "Just why do you want the sign moved?" "Every time I come home after dark, I nearly hit a deer on that curve because you can't see them until it's almost too late," explained Ronnie. "I guess I don't understand," said the foreman, "How will moving the sign help?" "Not too sharp, are you?" snarled Ronnie ... Titus had a really good birthday. Gwen Beeler and Ricky Beeler traveled to Austin this past weekend to help honor the famous Fannindel Basketball Boys of 1989 and they graciously provided me with this news article of this event. Congratulations to the boys and their couches of the 1989 Fannindel Boys State 1-A Championship. These boys and their couches were honored and highly recognized at halftime in Austin on Saturday at the State Boys Basketball Playoffs. Many Fannindel fans were there to help them with the honor. Six of the boys that played on the team were able to attend and they were: Vic McCain, Eddie Akins, Jason Fields, Shaun Franklin, and Bill Davidson. Connie Sue Wilburn was present to represent her deceased son Steve Wilburn. Coach Glen Fields and Coach Steve Guffey were present. Three of the boys were unable to attend and were missed: Fred Wilkerson, Bruce Jones, and Roy Gaffney. One of the greatest awards given the team was the Sportsmanship Award for the 1988 year and the 1989 year. We are so proud of this team as they were a joy to watch and still make us proud. As the doctor said, Bill should not be alive. It was God’s will that he not go at that time. We fully believe that all of the prayer made a big difference in his living and healing. Your kind offers of help, the food prepared, the calls and cards really helped us both. The death of his brother was another blow and your offers of sympathy and memorials were so appreciated. May God bless you all. Bill & Mary Anne Thurman By: Gail Levey Sometimes it is difficult to see the big picture, but we all play a part in the success or failure of our local economy. Our chambers of commerce are incubators of new idea and local places where you will find people working together to promote the common good. Not all members own a business; chambers are open to individuals, families, all community members who wish to be part of local change and help direct the coming growth. The Boyd Music Festival is an excellent example of a community pulling together to bring some new life to town. On September 20, 2014, the very first Boyd Music Festival will open at 10am and run until 8pm. Great music festivals don’t just happen, the community creates these great opportunities to attract attention to the area and show off what they have to offer. With three stages planned for the Boyd Festival, we have plenty of room for showcasing local talent as well as supporting big time acts! The Boyd Music Festival has signed with Shoot Low Sheriff, an award winning band out of Dallas, who will take the main stage at 4pm. We hope to secure the Light Crust Doughboys plus many other musical groups and individuals. There will be plenty of other activities and 31 different vendors displaying their wares for your shopping pleasure. We are fortunate to have secured an amazing BBQ, featuring organic pasture pork and beef, plus, we have space for 6 different food and beverage vendors. We hope to add a beer garden and wine tasting too! We are also very proud to host the Boyd Family Booth, where you can chat with some of the family members and see pieces of Ladonia’s history along with exclusive Boyd memorabilia. This is a huge community effort and we welcome your input! Whether you have music to play, food or crafts to sell, or ideas to share, please, join in! We have a great deal of work to do to bring this festival to Ladonia and hope that you follow along with us on this amazing journey of past, present and future Texas Music!
